The victorious u-23 players who won gold at the just concluded African Under 23 tournament in Senegal have just arrived Abuja ,with Nigerians happy at the prospect of the Samson Siasia led team partaking in the Rio 2016 Olympics. Head coach Samson Siasia speaking to the media assured Nigerians that they will do their best at the showpiece event next year.

“I’m very happy to have won this trophy, even if it was difficult, but the essential thing was done,” Siasia told cafonline.com. "It was not easy for us taking into considerations the teams we met in the first and second round.

Algeria is a good team and they showed that on the pitch, and playing well. My players also did well by scoring the goals we needed to win the match. Now we will continue to work, correct our mistakes and improve our game.

I was coach of Nigeria during the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008, when we reached the final, and in 2016 we will aim to do more than reaching the final by winning the trophy,” he added. See photos of the team's arrival below...

Politics / Soldiers Ply BRT Lane, Assault LASTMA Officials by ProfKen(m): 7:26am On Nov 18, 2015
Soldiers on Tuesday allegedly plied the lane designated for the Bus Rapid Transit in Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the soldiers allegedly assaulted officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority who had accosted them.

Our correspondent learnt that the Commander of LASTMA, BRT, Mr. Kayode Odunuga, had led his men to the Onipanu end of Ikorodu Road to enforce the traffic law when they spotted a senior army officer identified as Major Dickson Okpor in a silver Lexus plying the BRT lane.

It was learnt that the LASTMA officials also accosted a female banker for the same offence.

A LASTMA official told our correspondent that while they were attempting to penalise the traffic offenders, a lieutenant colonel who was also driving on the BRT lane, instructed the LASTMA officials to release the soldier and the banker.

It was learnt that when the LASTMA officials refused to do so, the lieutenant colonel, identified as L.A Bello, allegedly called for backup and scores of soldiers immediately stormed the area.

The soldiers allegedly assaulted the LASTMA officials and ensured that all those arrested were released.

An eyewitness, who did not want his name in print, said, “Around 7.30am, LASTMA officials were enforcing the traffic law at the Onipanu end of the Ikorodu Road when one Major Dickson Okpor in a silver Lexus with number plate, KTU566AV, took the BRT lane.

“Behind him was a banker, Mrs. Akingbade, in a black RAV 4. When we accosted them, one Lt.Col L.A Bello stormed the scene and ordered that they be released. Scores of soldiers stormed the place and a fracas ensued. The soldiers had their way.”

It was learnt that the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Bashir Braimoh, later arrived on the scene to personally supervise the enforcement.

Our correspondent learnt that another major identified as Nayogo was also accosted for taking the BRT lane.

Few minutes later, one Sergeant Muhammed X also plied the BRT lane as well as an official of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps identified as F.D Adetumobi in a Toyota with number plate, AAAHO3BV.

Another solider, Corporal Joseph V in a Nissan Pathfinder with number plate, AAAH03BV, also reportedly plied the lane.

The LASTMA Public Relations Officer, Mr. Mamud Hassan, condemned the act, adding that no one was above the law.

He said even Governor Akinwunmi Ambode and commissioners did not ply the BRT lane.

He, therefore, wondered why law enforcement agents – who should know better – would ply the BRT lane.

In his reaction, the Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 81 Division, Col. Mustapha Anker, said the army authorities had warned soldiers and officers against taking the BRT lane.

He said the errant soldiers would be disciplined by the army authorities.

Politics / Don’t Insult Igbinedion, Protesting Women Tell Oshiomhole by ProfKen(m): 7:17am On Nov 18, 2015
SOME women in Benin, the Edo State capital, on Tuesday, protested over what they described as alleged insult on the father of a former governor of the state, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, by Governor Adams Oshiomhole.

The women, who were clad in red attires, marched round the popular Ring Road before making their way to the Edo State House of Assembly.

A senior police officer at the assembly complex had volunteered to relay the grievances of the protesters to the leadership of the House; but the women insisted on meeting with the Speaker, Mr. Victor Edoror.

The governor had last week accused the former governor, Lucky Igbinedion, of unlawfully allocating 200,000 hectares of government land to his father, who is also the Esama of Benin Kingdom.

Oshiomhole had said that rather than use the land for mechanized farming as contained “in the books,” the ex-governor’s father allocated the land to cocoa farmers of Edo and Yoruba extraction and allegedly collected “royalties” from them.

He had also vowed to publish records of alleged fraud against the former governor.

Oshiomhole had said, “These cocoa farmers will farm and sweat to grow their cocoa on government land, Igbinedion will sit in his house on which he is not paying ground rent and is collecting royalties. Is Igbinedion the Oba of Benin?”

But the aggrieved women, who also carried placards with various anti-government inscriptions, described the action of the governor as an act of disrespect to the Benin chief, whom they claimed brought him into power.

“He is insulting the Esama and we are very angry about it,” one of the women, who declined mentioning her name, said.

Efforts by our correspondent to reach the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Aanena Jemitola, were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.

Politics / Oshiomole attacks Lucky and his father, say they ought to be in prison by ProfKen(m): 5:26pm On Nov 12, 2015
Edo state governor, Adams Oshiomole yesterday attacked former governor of Edo state, Lucky Igbinedion and his father, Gabriel Igbinedion, accusing them of looting the state resources and exploiting residents of the state.

Speaking to students of the Ambrose Ali University who paid him a courtesy call at the government house, Oshiomole said the former governor and his father ought to be in jail. He said while in office, Lucky allocated 200,000 hectares of government land to his father.

The governor said he's since revoked it and that the decision has caused a friction between himself and the Igbinedions. Adams said if the former governor does not obey the law, he will go to prison or either relocate from the state
“I want to be remembered as the man who took from those who have bastardised, raped and privatised the resources of Edo state, used our money to build their private universities and walk around our streets when they are supposed to be in prison. Edo people will be shocked how they have been raped by the gang masters of original fraudster. I will publish records in black and white. I am going to publish all the assets, government-owned lands that Igbinedion the son has ceded to Igbinedion the father, properties of Edo people. Lucky Igbinedion gave out over 200,000 acres of government land to Gabriel Igbinedion, his own father. They took that land on the ground that they will use it for mechanised farming but Igbinedion took this land and gave to cocoa farmers, some of them from Edo, some from Yorubaland. These cocoa farmers will farm and sweat to grow their cocoa on government land yet Igbinedion will sit in his house on which he is not paying ground rent and be collecting royalties. Is Igbinedion the Oba of Benin? The great Oba of the great Benin Kingdom never subjected his people to that level of exploitation. I revoked the land and returned it to government and they got angry and have been fighting me. Igbinedion believes he is above the law but I told him that he must obey the laws made by government. If he faults the law, he will go to prison. Everybody born of a woman in this state must be subjected to the rule of law. If he does not want to obey those laws, he will have to relocate"he said.

Politics / Court Remands Two For Laundering N128m Drug Proceeds by ProfKen(m): 4:52pm On Nov 12, 2015
A Federal High Court in Lagos on Thursday ordered the prison remand of two men, Ikenna Ozoh and Ogbo Obiora, for allegedly laundering about N128m, said to be proceeds of illegal narcotics business.
The remand of the two followed their arraignment on four counts of money laundering by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.

The NDLEA specifically accused Obiora of collaborating with one Chinedu, who is now at large, to conceal N128m in his (Obiora’s) personal savings bank account with Diamond Bank.
The accused was said to have committed the offence between February 2014 and 2015.
Ikenna and Obiora were said to have been arrested on September 9, 2015 at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos State, during the outward clearance of passengers onboard an Ethiad Airline flight to Brazil.

The NDLEA prosecutor, Mr. Ibrahim Abu, also told the court that the sum of $34,000 was recovered from Ikenna, which he failed to declare to the Nigerian Customs Service, “knowing that the said money directly or indirectly represents proceeds of a criminal conduct, to wit: dealing and trafficking in narcotic drug.”
Abu said the offence ran contrary to sections 2(5), 15(1)(b) and 18 (a) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act 2011, stressing that the accused were liable to being punished under sections 16(a) and 17(a) of the same law.
Ikenna and Obiora however pleaded not guilty to the four counts leveled against them.
Following bail applications by their lawyer, Mr. Victor Abana, Justice Saliu Saidu admitted each of Ikenna and Obiora to bail in the sum of N20m with two sureties each in like sum.

The judge said one of the sureties must be a civil servant either with the federal or state government and must be on at least Level 17.
The second surety, the judge said, must be a blood relation of the accused persons, who must own a landed property in Lagos and must also be resident in Lagos State.

Justice Saidu also ordered the accused to deposit their international passport in the custody of the NDLEA.

He, however, ordered the prison remand of the two accused pending when they will fulfill the bail conditions.

Trial was adjourned till February 2, 2016, with the judge directing the prosecution to furnish the defence with the all the necessary court processes, so as to ensure speedy trial.

Nairaland / General / Man Kills Basketball Coach Because He Dropped His Daughter From The Team(photos) by ProfKen(m): 4:31pm On Nov 11, 2015
A Mexican 'drug ballad' singer killed his daughter's basketball coach as revenge for leaving her out of the team.

Angelico Reyes opened fire on Guillermo Cordero, 33, after being told his daughter could not be in the starting team - or even a substitute - because she arrived late.
The 11-year-old student had hoped to play a local team at a university court in Oaxaca city, southwest Mexico, but was told to sit out after her family failed to arrived on time.

Reyes appeared to accept the decision at the time, but started an angry confrontation with Cordero after the game finished.

Witnesses then saw him draw his gun and shoot Cordero five times in the chest and abdomen. He then fled with his family. According to police, Reyes and his family are still on the run.
