I wonder a times when the masses argue, fight, wound and kill themselves because of this politicians who have eventually meet and dine with themselves behind closed doors!
Who told you that Rotimi Ameachi and Nyesom Wike aren't good friends who see themselves behind closed doors?
You can see them in the open as political enemies, but I tell you, they still meet behind closed doors.
Be careful how you attack yourselves because of these rogues call politicians.

Chief Jeremiah Oyeniyi Obafemi Awolowo’s exemplary leadership refused to depart our memories even as we witness series of serial mediocres occupying leadership positions in our 55 year old nation. The problem as often enunciated by some of us is utterly not corruption, but incompetency and lack of ideological orientation.

This Article tends to remind us about one man, who was so determined from the beginning of his life on what he wants to do and how he wants to do it. I find it very significant today in our political economy that our generation (the abused generation), which was failed by the outgoing generation should learn from such exemplary clues.

What is more, I have read this letter over and over, my conclusion is that, being focus is the world’s greatest asset. Awo made a loan request of £1,400 from Chief Timothy Adeola Odutola on March 25, 1943, (the richest Ijebu man in those days) and promised to pay back by 1955.

Chief Odutola refused him of the Loan, Awo could not travel that year. He buckled up his lace and by August 14, 1944 (one year later) he travelled to England, became a Barrister at law and was called to the Bar in November 1946. Amazingly, by 1954 (A year to the time he promised to pay Chief Odutola the Loan), Chief Awolowo was already a Premier in the defunct Western Region and already giving out Scholarship to over 200 undergraduates (First of its kind in Africa).

Dear Mr. Odutola,

I think it will be an exceeding saving of time and more business-like if I avoid all sweet preliminaries and go straight into the object of this letter and say that I am writing to ask you to be good enough to lend me a sum of £1,400 (One thousand and four hundred pounds) free of interest for twelve years.

It is a staggering figure! More staggering indeed does it become, when it is realized that I, who am asking for this loan, have nothing in all the world to give as a security for this money, excepting my good faith and my brains which again are of value only so long as I continue to breathe the breath of life!

Nevertheless, I here proceed to outline in brief why i want this big loan from you. And I hope you will be kind enough to sacrifice some time to go through what I have to say, even though, in the end you might find yourself unable to do me this grand favour.

One great ambition of mine since my boyhood days is to be a lawyer, a politician and a journalist, rolled into one. I cherish politics and journalism as a career, and I desire advocacy as a means of livelihood. For you will agree with me that a politician or journalist who has no money with which to support himself and family comfortably, is like a blade which has no razor.

Now, at one time, I was on the verge of making enough money with which I could proceed to England in order to pursue the object of my ambition; but I suffered a twist in my fortune, and I crashed. Ever since, I have tried without success to recover lost grounds, financially. But spiritually and intellectually, I have made appreciable advance in spite of towering difficulties, all of which have now been surmounted.

As you are aware, I have just passed the intermediate Bachelor of Commerce Examination. Next year, I am taking the final B.Com. Having a degree is not my goal; I hate to be a government or mercantile employee. Otherwise, there are opportunities for me here and there to get a suitable and well paid job under government or one of the mercantile houses. As you know, however, once I become an employee of government or a mercantile establishment that is the end to my career as a politician and journalist. I have therefore resolved that under no circumstances will I take up such employment.

That is just by the way. I am now thirty-four years of age. After careful thought, I have come to the conclusion that if I could raise a loan free of interest sufficient to cover expenses, I should go to England, this year and within three years, I should qualify as a Barrister –at –law, and also obtain with Honours the LL.B Degree of London University. In addition this degrees apart from giving me good backing as a solicitor and Advocate will help me immensely as a politician and journalist.

But where on earth could i get the money? Who in Nigeria today could give £1,400 free of interest to help his fellow-man? J. Henry Doherty, Esq., of illustrious memory who did the like to many successful Nigerians is no more. But after meticulous, shifting and weighing, I hit upon you.

I have no doubt whatsoever in my mind that out of the bounty with which providence blesses your grit and efforts as a businessman, you can well easily afford to advance such a sum of money. I have no doubt too that as a young and progressive man you will be quite happy to give the money for the pursuit of the project for which I desire it.

But then, could you take this risk?

That is the question. As I have said before, I have no security for this loan. Moreover, I want it free of interest. So that you stand to gain absolutely NOTHING in the whole transaction, except the satisfaction that by helping me to achieve my ambition you are indirectly or even directly helping Nigeria or even Africa.

This risk becomes greater when it is borne in mind that I might die in the course of my studies or immediately after, so that, since I have no security or surety, you stand the chance of losing not only the money but also the satisfaction which you may cherish that you are contributing to the uplift of Africa. It is indeed a great risk; the greatest any man ever embarks upon.

But, this is a big BUT, if I live, as I have no doubt I will do, you will not only get your money back in full, but you will, to the end of your days, have cause to rejoice that you have done one of the most outstanding and most philanthropic acts any human being ever does. Among other things, I shall make excellent use of the money while in England by breaking records in my examination. On my return to Nigeria, I shall strive to be one of the foremost advocates, politicians and writers in West Africa, and while I do all these, I shall make it a point not only to pay your money back in full, but also to repay your kindness and generosity towards me in every way I can.

All the same, it is a big risk! So, Sir, I like you to think seriously about it, and see if you can take it in the interest of a young man who has brain, industry and determination to back his ambition, but lacks the money. I know we have never been close friends, but I have a shrewd idea that you may take the risk and help me.

On this assumption, therefore, I proceed to the next and last stage of this letter.

I shall not require the whole £1,400 in a lump sum. To start with, you will help me pay a sum of £208-13s-3d to the Inner Temple. I have already received an application form from this Inn of Court; and from the details forwarded, I gather that the sum of £208-13s-3d will cover all the cost of training as a barrister, examination fees excluded.

When I am ready to sail, you will advance me a sum of £100 to cover passage, provision for my family and any other incidental expenses (NOTE: If I got torpedoed on the way, you would certainly lose this £100 but you will recover the £208-13s-3d).

At the same time you will remit to a London Bank the sum of £491-6s-9d. It is out of this amount that I shall pay the university fees for LL.B course and for special courses in political science and journalism, when I land in England. This is to say, the initial advance will total £800.

At the end of the first year, provided I make satisfactory progress in my studies, you will give instruction to the bank to honour all cheques from me drawn on this account. There will be an arrangement to be signed by me on my return.

On my return, I shall require TWO years within which to establish a solid practice and build a good reputation. After these two years, I should commence to pay at least £200 per annum either in monthly, quarterly or annual payments. So that in seven years after the first two years, I should pay back the whole sum of £1,400. That will be TWELVE YEARS from the time you help me to pay this in April or so this year, then I should be due to pay the whole of £1,400 by April 1955.

Now, as you yourself will see, this is the farthest limit within which I can pay the money. It may be possible for me to pay the money within THREE to FIVE years of my return. As a matter of fact, the sooner I pay it off, the better. But it is much better to be on the safe side in a matter like this. It is no making promises now which will be difficult to fulfil in future. On the contrary it is better to mention a period of twelve years and pay within SIX or EIGHT years than to mention FIVE YEARS and fail to pay within TEN years. Personally, I prefer that I should fail to get the loan under theses unattractive but sure conditions, rather than succeed in getting it under attractive but precarious conditions.

Now, this is all I have to say. You have my request before you, and the reason why i make the request. It is left for you to decide whether it is worthwhile to take the risk of helping me in the manner outlined above or not.

If you do me the great favour, not only myself and all that are mine, but also God and Africa will be grateful, I shall have no cause whatsoever to grumble or to blame you, FOR THE RISK IS GREAT.

Since this is a very selfish request, I enclosed herewith a self addressed stamped envelope to be sent under a registered post.

Pause: Are you prepared to become very serious?

When I was a young entrepreneur just beginning to enjoy the first flashes of success in my business career, I befriended a very successful businessman from my homeland. Ariston Chambati was a towering figure in his day. He was the nearest thing I ever had in those days to someone you would call a mentor today. He'd already gained international recognition and often travelled to international meetings, and served on several international boards.

He would often say to me, "Master two things: your time, and finding the right person for a job. Get those two things right and you are on your way."

He was a "no-nonsense type" and he did not "suffer fools." If he invited you for a meeting, no matter what time of day, he would turn up on time and well dressed.

I will never forget how he once asked me to come see him late one Sunday evening. Arriving at his home, I found him dressed up and in his study. He never joked around and expected you to get to the point quickly.

After the meeting, I asked him why he went to such great lengths ahead of such a simple meeting, even with me. His response was well measured and serious.

He first explained to me a very painful experience he'd gone through on one of his business travels. Then he added: "Young brother (he always used a term of endearment in my mother tongue and I always addressed him by a similar term, which means "senior brother", you have the talent to go very far. . ."

__"Only remember this," he said, "Don't expect others to take you seriously when you are not prepared to take yourself seriously. When you walk through that door, I want you always to know that I'm a serious person."

Those words still ring in my ears over what must be two decades now, as though that conversation took place only yesterday.

The men and women who are going to take Africa to the next level are those really prepared to become serious, very serious.

Pause: The meeting is important, so be prepared.

When it comes to a business meeting, it’s very important to be prepared and not waste the other party's time, particularly if you're the one who wants something. There's a story told about a young man who'd been trying very hard to see a very important potential investor in his business venture. The businessman finally invited the young man to pass by his home early one morning for breakfast. The man was relaxed, in his home setting.
As they walked into the dining room, the young man spotted a picture of the man shaking hands with a famous football player.

"Sir, I see you know this great football player!" the young man remarked excitedly.

"Yes, I know him very well."

"Wow! So you also support Man U?"

"Yes, I have supported Man U since I was a boy."

"Sir, I'm also a Man U supporter!"

"That's good," said the businessman, pointing the young man to a chair. The young man asked the elder investor what it was like to meet this famous player in person. It turned out the businessman knew a lot about football, and began to talk about important games that he'd seen.

"Sir, you saw that game in person?"

"I was there."

"Wow."

The conversation continued about football for the next 30 minutes as they ate a wonderful meal. The young man really enjoyed the food and felt he'd struck a good discussion with the elder man now that they’d found a common interest. They were even laughing and joking together as they shared "football talk."
They had barely finished the meal when someone came in and whispered something to the businessman. He looked at his watch and got up suddenly.

"I'm sorry, but I need to see the President," he said, and with that got up and left. Meeting over. The young man never got another chance to meet the investor.

Sadly, this happens to a lot of people, and often they have themselves to blame. You must be well prepared when you go to see a potential partner or investor, particularly when it's you who requested the meeting. Know what you came for, and don't meander away.

Lessons:
# "Remember that good fortune often happens when opportunity meets with preparation,” said the great inventor Thomas A. Edison (who patented about 1000 inventions including the historic one that led to a commercially viable incandescent light bulb!) Be well prepared. Preparation is everything.
# Don't get sidetracked and lead the discussion into something that adds absolutely no value to what you've come for. Their conversation about football should have ended once they sat down, even if it was of interest to the other party. Politely lead the conversation into what you came to discuss.
# When a business meeting includes a meal, it’s best to arrive having already eaten. Choose the least complicated food on offer, and the quickest to be delivered. You did not come for food; you can eat at home.
# Get the deal done, my friend. Don't waste time!
# Avoid those long-winded greetings, without being rude.
# Have your “best slide" with you, in case they ask for something in writing.
# Don’t give them a 50-page document. They will not read it. A "two-pager," with numbers, will invite a more detailed submission.
# Practice and practice your presentation.
# Be relaxed. Being well prepared makes you relaxed.

Over 200 years ago, Benjamin Franklin gave advice that's probably even more relevant today: “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.”

The new year opened with turmoil in the Chinese stock markets as prices fell dramatically, leading to a global selloff. In just one week, global stock markets lost over $2 trillion US dollars! Other news in the global markets saw the price of a barrel of crude oil fall below $35 per barrel, down from a high of $62 per barrel less than 12 months ago. That’s down 50% in 12 months and 71% in 24 months!

Since the beginning of last year, 2015, the price of copper has fallen by 30%; iron ore is down by 42%; platinum has also been a disaster, losing more than half its value from less than three years ago. Agricultural commodities have not fared much better on global markets. Last week the South African rand hit an all-time low of 16:1 against the United States dollar and it’s still falling!

It has everything to do with you, and its impact is going to be very personal... Brace yourself, there’s a storm on its way!

You might even be sitting at your desk as a civil servant, or supervising children at school as a teacher, or upholding the law as a policeman; or maybe you’re a pensioner, and you’re also saying to yourself, "I'm not in business; I don't know anything about these things, so what’s it got to do with me?” Answer: EVERYTHING! It has everything to do with you, and its impact is going to be very personal... Brace yourself, there’s a storm on its way!

You look at the sky and see rolling black clouds. The stock markets of China and New York may seem far away, and global commodity prices and exchange rates may seem irrelevant to your village, but they’re linked to the real economy in which you live and work!

The next 12 months or more will be very tough, particularly in emerging markets. Many African countries will find it hard going. Consequently, it will be tough for citizens, especially those who are most vulnerable. The weaker your country's economy going into the storm, the tougher it will be. Similarly, the weaker your company or employer, the tougher it will be...

Now let me tell you about the flight of the eagle. Prophets and Kings of the bible world absolutely loved watching this majestic bird. They believed the eagle is the only bird that flies during a storm. It's developed a flying technique (a skill) they call "mounting" the wind (as though it were climbing a stairway). The eagle has so mastered the storm that it not only flies during storms, but can find opportunities to prosper; it can actually use the storm to its advantage.

Even in these storms, those with the correct mindset will prepare themselves. They will train themselves to understand the times, and learn to prosper in its headwinds… they will mount on wings as eagles!

Yes, it’s going to be very tough, and for some of you, tougher than anything you could have imagined, but you must not be discouraged or wearied. And when you come through it, you will be much better at what you do. Just don't be afraid, and don't panic. In this series I will remind you of some of the things you must do to prosper like the eagle.

This year we must be serious, very serious. Africa expects it of us.

NNPC to be sole petrol importer, says Emefiele CBN PAYMENT of subsidy on fuel importation and Foreign Exchange (FOREX) differentials on bank loans granted to marketers by the Federal Government are to end soon. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, said the government was doing everything to ensure that the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) become sole importer of petroleum products. Members of the Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria (MOMAN) have been on a running battle with the Federal Government over subsidy claims running into several millions of dollars. But Emefiele said President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the NNPC to cut down on importation by reactivating the four refineries and ensuring they function at installed capacities. Speaking in an interview with Financial Times of London, the CBN chief said: “The President came on board and said that we will work very hard to reduce importation of petroleum products by ensuring that our refineries work. Our refineries are working now. “The Warri and Port Harcourt refineries have started producing. They have not obtained the optimal capacity but they will. The Kaduna refinery will start working this month. “Now, there are other actions that the Presidency is putting in place to ensure that we reduce importation of petroleum products where the NNPC will solely, almost solely be responsible for procuring refined petroleum. ”Those who are importing petroleum products will only just need to go to the NNPC and pick up petroleum products. “So, in that area, I would say that we are already moving in the direction of reducing the import of petroleum products. And we will achieve it.” On the efforts being made by the President to recoup stolen oil revenues believed to have been deposited in foreign banks, Emefiele said the issue was still being looked at, assuring that “as the Central Bank, we will also assist in drilling them once we get to that stage, and we will be happy to have that money back because it will improve our reserves”.

ANKARA, TURKEY — President Goodluck Jonathan,
yesterday, said he has no ambition to stay in office
beyond 2015, assuring Nigerians in Diaspora that
while he will not contest the 2015 election, he will
ensure that this year’s election is free and fair.
The President promised that if voted in for the next
four years, he would ensure significant
improvement in key sectors of the economy —
security, power, education, road, health amongst
others.
“Without security, there is no government. So it is
not debatable, it is something we have to
addressed and we are working towards that with
vigour. But if I’m voted into power within the next
four years, the issue of power will become a thing
of the past. Four years is enough for anyone in
power to make significant improvement and if I
can’t improve on power within this period, it then
means I cannot do anything even if I am there for
the next four years.”
Jonathan said this while interacting with Nigerians
mainly diplomats working in the United Nations
Economic Commission for Africa, UNECA, and the
African Union, AU, in Addis-Ababa.
While fielding questions from those present at the
interactive session on whether Nigerians abroad
will vote, Jonathan said: “I would have loved that
the Nigerians in Diaspora vote this year but to be
frank with you, that is going to be difficult now.
Presently, the law does not allow the voting outside
Nigeria and so this year Nigerians in Diaspora will
not vote but I will work towards it by 2015 even
though I will not be running for election.”
On the issue of security, Jonathan said the
government was doing everything possible to arrest
the situation. He disclosed that all those involved
in the October 1 bombing had been arrested and
were being prosecuted. He, however, said he
ordered the release of the car dealers because they
were just businessmen who could not have known
that the vehicles were to be used for such heinous
crime.
On education, the President said, the nine new
approved universities were to be specialised and to
be headed by at least three Nigerians experts in
Diaspora.
On the concerns raised of having a database of
Nigerian experts in Diaspora, President Jonathan
assured that he was working on creating a forum
for interaction between them and government and
also develop a database, where experts needed to
address the various challenges of the economy will
be drawn. He hinted that this was why the
Diaspora Commission was being set up as the bill
was already before the National Assembly.
The President also disclosed that the government
is looking towards reviewing the country’s foreign
policy to ensure that Nigeria gets maximum benefit
from its roles and contributions to international
organizations like the AU, UN and ECOWAS.
He lamented that right now Nigeria’s contributions
were not being recognized adding that “there is
need for Nigeria to have something in return for
our investments. We are investing so much but it is
not being noticed and there is need to reverse that
trend.
On the concerns about road network and
transportation in the country, President Jonathan
assured that the railway system will be revamp
because presently heavy duty vehicles were
destroying the roads. “Why we cannot have
continuous road maintenance for now because no
contractor wants to go into it because of the
continuous pressure on the road by heavy duty
vehicles. That is why we are working to ensure that
we revamp the rail”.
The President also assured that Nigerians working
in international organization and institutions would
be issued diplomatic passports. He directed the
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Odein Ajumogobia to
submit the list of those qualified within the shortest
possible time to him.
On the 35 per cent affirmative action
implementation and the domestication of protocols
signed, he assured that he will present before the
National Assembly within the shortest possible
time
