Hello, I checked the site but I could not decipher a single thing. Everything is written in Chinese. Please how did you change the language to English?

I am looking forward to the answer to this question.

A friend of mine can't access her TOEFL result on the ETS website. And her visa interview is next week. It is a worrisome situation.

Please, I am not saying the people here are using s lipsrsealed lipsrsealed n cards but I need to be enlightened on how you can afford to pay at these cheap prices.
I'm eager to be enlightened myself because I am about to register through one of these guys but my gut feeling is telling me to desist.

It is a conundrum to me. Even though I wish the registration fee was not increased recently, I still shiver at the idea of registering even at a cut-price to these faceless guys.

They should just come out and clarify the issue.biko!

a^3b^4c^7 > 0. Which of the following statements must be true?
Indicate all such statements.
1. ab is negative
2. abc is positive
3. ac is positive

I found this in manhattan 5lb and I am still puzzled at why the answer is not 2 and 3. meanwhile, 3 is the answer in the text

The answer is correct. Since the product of the a,b and c positive (I.e >0), then a and c must be positive.

Since 'b' is raised to an even power of 4, then it must be positive. Therefore, since 'a' and 'c' must be positive since each is raised to a negative power.

Note this is a MUST be true and not could be true question.

Option 1 is wrong cos 'a' must be positive for the stated condition to be true. Also, be must be positive since it is raised to an even power. Therefore, (+)(+)=positive

Option 2 is not true since 'b' could be negative and the product of the three numbers would still be positive. The reason been that any number regardless of its sign when raised to an even power would be positive.

I can't really comment on the specifics of the test, there's a voice prompt at the beginning where you have to swear an oath not to divulge any info about the nature of the test.

Well the verbal section wasn't easy at all but English has always been a strong point for me (got a 9 on my IELTS). I attended to the reasoning questions and then the reading comprehension. The passages were longer and more complex than I expected for just a few questions.

I was in luck with the Quant section but time wasn't on anyone's side. The main strategy I used was answering the easy questions within the first 10mins, just skipping all the hard ones and using the remainder time to tackle them.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience though sketchy with us. I wasn't expecting you to go into the detail of the questions anyway.

I just wanted you like other previous test takers have done here to share your experience about the day itself, setting of test venue/centre, order of the sections VQVQ et al. I did same when I wrote my TOEFL back in October in JKK. I even gave a breakdown of my scores just to enlighten others.

Thanks anyway. I intend giving GRE in early February.

I can't still fathom the why Nigerian university lecturers won't complete a simple online recommendation asap. Always giving funny excuses and one is against deadlines. Phewwww cry
I feel your pain bro. This is one of the reason I'm not applying for Fall 2018 but Spring 2019. I know getting a well written recommendation within the next 3 weeks from any Nigerian lecturer talk less of Prof is a daunting task.

If you are living in the university town you graduated from then go to those lecturers with your laptop and modem. You could even prepare a sample of the recommendation letter yourself and politely show it to them to make the whole thing quick and less-frustrating.

I have taken my GRE, but my result isn't encouraging. Sincerely I don't have anything to say to prospective test takers. everything have been said here, you just have to use your prepping time wisely, know your weaknesses and address them before the test day and take as many full length practice as you can.

With my score am now confused on the way forward. I don't want to spend the little money I have saved applying to schools and get rejected at last, better I use the money to register for another GRE. But that will lead my application to next year. something that I don't want. But if that is the wise thing to do. then I have no choice I will go for it.

My profile is:

Q-158
V- 150

Cgpa- 4.21/5.0
Undergraduate: PE

TOEFL: coming up 03 February

Applying for: PE, M Sc

Considering my score, I have sent the score to the following schools:

University of Houston
LSU
Missouri US&T
University of Louisiana Lafayette

Your advice will strongly be appreciated.
I don't think an overall score of 308 is bad. Although, clocking 161 (roughly 80th percentile) in Quants would have bolstered your chances of admit.

I would advice you to apply but focus on making your SOP top-notch. You need to make the first paragraph catchy and captivating to the adcom. Another aspect is your referee but I can not guarantee you would get a very powerful recommendation from a Nigerian lecturer/professor. They just don't seem to be effusive and specific in their assessment. A bland recommendation would further reduce your chances. I would suggest you google up the specific requirement for reference for each school. Some schools honour reference letters from your boss at work (professional) or a mentor that can vouch about your ability to excel in graduate studies.

Also, if you haven't published any paper before please do, it speaks volume about your research experience. I have no idea how rich your esearch experience is. If you have any relevant work or research experience just focus on it in ur SOP and CV.

Lastly, take time to work on your CV. You can google sample of academic CV. Don't forget to include relevant research experience under its section as well as extracurricular activities.

If you haven't contacted POI then start right away. Send them a short introductory mail and an an attachment of your application materials. Merge all your documents into a single PDF file and your name_M.sc docs as title.

Why not apply for M.sc/PhD route. It's far more difficult getting funding for M.Sc than PhD especially in Houston. They have intimidating admission requirement for Environmental Engineering so I can imagine that of PE. I wish you all the best.

The test itself was surprisingly easy but I had a hard time with time, especially with the Quant section. But all in all, it turned out good.
Congratulations for the success of the GRE exam. I very sure you swot up on the general strategies of answering GRE questions to find both sections and the exam overall surprisingly easy.

Could you please share your test day experience with peeps here so we could be better prepared mentally and technically to ace the exam as you have done.

Compliment of the season buddies. Please I need some illumination concerning GRE. I plan to give the GRE on January 4th but the priority deadline for one of my target schools is January 15.

My questions are:

Firstly, does GRE produce online examinee report like TOEFL. I plan to upload it for my online application during application in case the official scores from ETS does not arrive the School before January 15th.

Secondly, for those that wrote GRE lately in Lagos approximately after how many days after the test date was the result ready--I mean AWA?

Thank you all for your anticipated responses.

Femi312 and Scholastica16 have given you excellent advice. Why not broaden your search? Why are you constraining yourself to those four schools?
Thank you for your contribution sir. I've just explained in my last post why these 4 schools seem to be top on my list.

I have contacted POIs and grad cord in the Civil and Environmental Engr Dept and they seem to be optimistic about my chance of getting admitted. I am constrained to apply to just 4 schools due to finance so I am circumspect about my choice of schools.
EducationRe: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by pronto543(m): 10:24am On Nov 11, 2017
Scholastica16:
I don't know the schools that would require an excess of N119k to send transcripts. You should really check your calculations again to be sure.

From what you have said, NCSU, Amherst and to some degree Temple do not require the evaluated transcript.

The argument that an evaluated copy would fasten the review is neither here nor there; people largely prefer these evaluations when they are trying to augment the GPA, but in your case, you have solid GPAs of which the individual courses that are pertinent to your Doctorate plans will be checked - not necessarily the GPA per se, except you are aiming for the top 15 schools which you are not.

To add to that, you do not yet know if your GRE score will open you to more schools or even cause you to remove some from your list. If the GPA is vital to you to be on the 4.0 scale, why not use the free evaluator and just mention it in your apps as an estimate of what your GPA will be for your M.S and Undergrad.

Shelling out $325 for this evaluation does not appear cost-expedient in the long run but then I understand and support whatever decision you take.
Thank you Femi and scholastica for the illumination you have shed on this matter. I must confess it is ridiculous if not unconscionable to fork out $325 on transcript evaluation when the money can be better spent on other applications. In fact, I have done the free evaluation with WES free calculator and my GPA on 4 point scale is well above 3.4.

Prior to this time, I was mulling the idea of not writing GRE but since I've finally registered and have a date in sight, I just have to do well in it and report my scores. Whether my GRE score is good enough or not, I'll still need to focus on my SOP and other aspects.

I am a bit constrained by choice of Universities. I'm planning to apply directly for Ph.D in Environmental Engr under Civil Engr. My research interest is in physical and chemical treatment of wastewater. I've checked the research done by the faculty in these universities and have already contacted most of them. These final 4 schools are the ones I have left after narrowing down a long list of potential schools.

However, like Scholastica rightly said, my GRE scores could even serve to throw open more options for me. If I get great scores, I had will be better positioned to apply to top-tier schools that do not require transcript evaluation. The only snag however is the deadline of Dec 15 which I can't meet. One other thing that can strengthen my profile is for me to publish my M.Sc thesis. The manuscript has been ready and edited by my supervisor for months but the publication fee is holding me back. All is well!

Thank you all for your advice. From them I can make informed decision. I'll appreciate if you guys could provide me with reputable free publication journals and reputable Civil and Environmental Engineering PhD programs in my line of research interest that do not require transcript with high acceptance rate. I will also apply to Michigan Technological University since it charge no application fee or official transcript. Thank you all. It is well

Scholastica16:
Someone else has replied you very well.

Do not use transcript evaluators if you are not constrained by your choices and to me, you are not. Most schools have their own in-house evaluation schemes which they adhere to.

As for your Quants, you can practice the 5lb Manhattan questions, the ETS guide and take as many full-length tests as possible.

Always, review your answers to see what you got wrong and simpler steps to take to get the questions next time.

Good luck.
Thank you greatly for your response. I'll take to your advice on how to use the practice materials and all the preparation tips.

As for the bolden part, I explained my reasons in my reply to another person in my previous response.

Congrats on your score. Are the schools asking for transcript evaluation? If I were you and I know my financial status I will avoid schools with transcript evaluation, and schools that require official transcript like plaque. Mind you, if you are planning to apply for fall 2018, you might not meet the deadline. Evaluation takes a minimum of 1 month and depending on your undergraduate/postgraduate school, it might be longer. My advice for you is to look for other good schools that doesn't require evaluation or official transcript and test scores. And if only one of the schools is asking for evaluation, you can weight your options and remove it from the list. Last time I checked, the top 2 schools you listed there don't require any transcript evaluation
Thank you so much for your insightful advice and recommendation. Of the 4 schools, Morgan requires transcript evaluation while UM Amherst requires one copy of official transcript; Temple asked for certified copy of transcript.

I actually selected Morgan as a safe school and because I got a favourable response from a Nigerian Prof whose research interest chimes with mine . He also happens to be the coordinator for the research option I'm applying to.Although he told me he won't be taking RA for the coming Fall, he nevertheless advised me to apply directly for doctorate.

NCSU requires no transcript evaluation. I have already done a Skype interview with a POI there. Temple advise applicants to use transcript evaluation for fast processing while UM Amherst grad cord also replied my enquiry mail and told me transcript evaluation could be used in lieu of official transcript.

The dilemma for me now is 2 of the 4 schools indirectly requires transcript evaluation which is cost-effective given the fact that I'll spend more than $325 if I were to apply for official transcript from my Undergraduate and Graduate Schools.

I still have some little time anyway as none of the schools have a deadline early than Jan 1, 2018. The pecuniary constraint is all that stands between me and dream.
EducationRe: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by pronto543(m):
Hello peeps,

I have been a silent viewer of this thread. The first day I came across this thread around May this year, I knew I had struck gold. I took the time to read from the very first page up to 200 and something page it was on then. May God bless the soul that started this awesome thread. I have in short benefited immensely. I download all the materials I've been prepping with. I simply download from the various Dropbox and google drive link posted by the well meaning brothers we have here. I printed on campus since it often cheaper. Although I spent close to 15k, I must say it's money well spent given the knowledge I've gained reading these materials and when compared to the cost of buying each of the materials from the bookstore.

I sat for TOEFL on Saturday, 28th October 2017 at JKK centre. I registered with MAFIT and while I had less than 2 weeks to prepare, I focused on the speaking and reading. I'm pretty good in Writing but I still had a little practice on both the integrated and individual writing task.

I had written TOEFL in 2014 so I was already familiar with the exam's overall format. I scored 98 at that time. A day before the exam, I practiced with the TOEFL iBT software and reviewed all the questions I missed.

My scores were available on Tuesday, 7th November after just 7 working days. I wasnt able to complete the Listening as there were 2 questions I couldn't answer before the elapsed. I guess that is the price I have to pay for trying to eavsdrop on other test takers who were already on the Speaking task while I was on Listening task. Below is the is the breakdown of my scores:

Reading-->25
Listening-->24
Speaking-->24
Writing-->28

Total--->101

I am happy although I was aiming for 105 upward with at least 26 in Speaking.

I've registered with BRABIT LTD for GRE. My test date is Friday, 24th November. I actually told them I preferred Saturday, 02 Dec so I have less time for preparation. They also offer free Magoosh online access which I'm enjoying already. The reg fee is 45k which is quite cheap when compared with most centres.

Below is my profile
B.Eng Agric & Bioresources Engr (4.06/5/0 CGPA)
M.Sc Environmental Engineering (5.4/7.0 CGPA)

My target schools are:
North Carolina State Uni, Raleigh
University of Massachusetts, Amherst
Temple University
Morgan State University

I'm planning to apply for Ph.D haven contacted POI in some of the school and getting the green light.

Gurus in the house please help me with tips on how to score above 160 in Quant's. Your comments are really appreciated.I have been using the Official GRE guide, Manhattan 8 Series and Manhattan 5lb and now I have access to Magoosh online prep. The problem is that my preparation has been on and off due to work and hustling.I'm a bit jitry. Another challenge is raising my application fees ($285) and transcript evaluation costs ($325).

Can someone help me get in touch with someone outside the shores of Nigeria to help with payment in order to beat the high exchange rate? I really crave your help guys!!!

You can pm me

Hitech PLC are a Korean company who produce high technology goods such as CD players. Recently they opened a factory in the town of Marstairs in Thanet, Kent, an economic development area. The factory is doing well with 69% of its sales coming from the British market. However relations with the local population are poor.

The anticipated benefits to the town from the building of the factory haven't materialised, as most of the workforce needed to be highly skilled and were brought in from other areas, thus providing little local employment. These non-locals were highly paid and have pushed up prices in the local shops and also house prices leading to resentment.

The Chief Executive is aware of this resentment and wants to improve the situation. The directors have agreed that up to £300,000 may be spent on a scheme to benefit the community and lift the company's image in the community.

Three possible schemes have been put forward:

Scheme 1.
The local hospital wants to set up a new heart disease unit. A donation of £300,000 would make this possible.

Picture of Hospital
Scheme 2.
The Marstairs Arts Centre is a charity that runs a prestigious orchestra for young people as one of its activities. The orchestra has been invited to tour Northern France next Summer. The company could enter into a deed of covenant to pay the Arts Centre £100,000 for the next four years.

Picture of Violin

Scheme 3.
The local football club Marstairs United are a Championship Division club sometimes seen on TV. £250,000 would advertise the company in the ground and on the team's playing strips for two years.

The views of the Chief Executive and Directors are as follows:
The Finance Director
The Finance Director's Calculations:

Scheme 1. No tax savings would accrue.
Scheme 2. Tax savings from this would be £25,000 p.a.
Scheme 3. A tax saving of £100,000 would accrue from this.Graph
The Marketing Director feels:
Scheme 1 would scarcely increase sales at all. The unit would be small but the publicity would be very positive.
Scheme 2 would give a moderate increase to sales in France. The company is shortly to launch a marketing operation in France and though there would be no advertising, the company's involvement would be publicised.
Scheme 3 would have a major impact on sales. Some problems are that cricket is as popular as football in Kent and hooliganism has been a problem at the club.
The Chief Executive
The Chief Executive has said that she would like to see other benefits to the company as well as the public relations boost.

The Chief Executive has asked you, as a promising young manager, to study the three proposals and make a recommendation on which of the schemes the company should support and why for consideration by the Board of Directors at its next meeting. Only one of the schemes can be supported. After examining all the information say which scheme the company should support and give your reasons.

Congrats bro, and thanks for keeping this thread alive.

I'm hoping you have plans to take the TOEFL test. A little extra might be what distinguishes your application from the others in your chosen department.

Good to know you also don't see any school as 'safe' anymore. I got a rejection letter from Stevens Institute of Technology two days ago and I received it with mixed feelings - they waived the application fee for me (as I'm guessing they did for a lot of other international applicants) but I paid to send my test scores to them and disturbed three referees to send in letters of recommendation.

Good luck in this 'fishing' phase.
Sorry bro for the rejection. I believe there is light at the end of the tunnel. Please, I'll like to know how you got the application fee waived? Also, did you send official transcript to the school or do they honour inofficial copies of transcripts?
