Back in the day, we had the Regional system of government, not the state structure we have today. In the Regional structure, the Regional are very powerful, almost as powerful as the centre, if not more powerful. But the state structure, as we practice today, the states are very weak while the centre is all powerful.

When Ironsi came to power, he was the most senior officer and head of the Army. He appointed the Regional Military Governors who were duty bound to obey him as a senior officer. But when Gowon came to power, not only did he have many who were senior to him, including Ojukwu, none of them were duty bound to obey Gowon nor recognize him as head of state since they were senior to him in rank.

Gowon was parading himself as head of state in Lagos but in truth, most of the Regions did not recognize as so. So Gowon had no power over Ojukwu in the East. That's one the reasons for of the Aburi meeting. Having a weak centre and strong Regions is the reason Gowon abolished the 4 Regions, created states which in turn led to the war

Somebody posted a video which he claims is proof that Gowon released Awolowo from jail yet in the same video, Awolowo can be seen arriving in a car. How can some who is supposed be released be arriving in a car with his driver? That only shows that Awolowo was already a free man.

Now who released Awolowo? Ojukwu or Gowon? Ojukwu was asked this question in an interview he granted Rudolph Okonkwo in 2001 and this was Ojukwu's answer

"We’ve said this over and over again, so many times, and people don’t understand; they don’t want to actually. If you remember, I released Awolowo from jail. Even that, some people are beginning to contest as well. Awo was in jail in Calabar. Gowon knows and the whole of the federal establishment knows that at no point was Gowon in charge of the East. The East took orders from me. Now, how could Gowon have released Awolowo who was in Calabar? Because of the fact that I released him, it created quite a lot of rapport between Awo and myself and I know that before he went back to Ikenne, I set up a hotline between Ikenne and my bedroom in Enugu"


What people dont realise is that after the overthrow of Ironsi, Ojukwu some others never actually recognized Gowon as head of state. In fact, all of the members of the supreme military council of Ironsi were all senior to Gowon with the exception of Lt Col Hassan Katsina. It would take another 6 months before Ojukwu and other Regional Military Governors met with Gowon in Aburi Ghana where Ojukwu formerly recognized Gowon as head of state in return for keeping to the Aburi agreement. By that time, Awolowo was already out of in Calabar which was in the Eastern Region

So it was not possible for Gowon to have released Awolowo, even if he had wanted to, as Gowon leadership was not recognised in the Eastern Region where Awolowo was in jail

Why did ojukwu release Awo just 5 days after Gowon became head of state, something he didn’t do six months earlier? Does a military governor have power over the release of federal prisoners in federal prisons?

Ojukwu became a rebel in 1967, not 1966 that Awo was released. He was not treated as a rebel in 1966 until he declared Biafra in 1967. Stop sounding dumb.

This thing has been debated non-stop for years since Ojukwu said he was the one that released Awo. Unfortunately all the people (Gowon and co) who have been speaking contrary to Ojukwu's statement did not start talking about it until AFTER OJUKWU DIED... Gowon has also not written a book or memoirs for us to read and scrutinise.

My honest opinion is that the release of Awo would have been of huge PR benefit to Gowon/FG and Ojukwu. Yes Ojukwu did not recognise the government of Gowon but would have happily played along with the release if Gowon requested it and there was definitely no chance of Awo being released without Ojukwu's knowledge, it just doesn't work that way.

But you saw him on prison uniform.
What concerns ojukwu with a federal prisoner? Does buhari needs tambuwal approval before releasing dasuki? Was the federal prison under the control of ojukwu?

The army in the east was not Biafran army. They comprised of different tribes. How would they be loyal to ojukwu? Was the comptroller general of prisons not recognized Gowon as well? You mean every Nigerian institutions in the east disobeyed Gowon because of ojukwu? Why were igbos spending Nigerian currency and taking salaries from Nigeria?

Gowon need not be in calabar. He only needed to order a proclamation for his release which was adhered to. Had nothing to do with ojukwu.
