I think it has to do with the data plan you on.
1k for 4GB Welcome Back Offer plan. Have you been recharging regularly on the sim for more than 3 months before you switched to the plan.
How long have you had the sim.
I think they are charging at a different plan rate than the tarrif plan you subscribed for.
MTN can be a bit trickish when giving you excessive data on a cheap rate.
They have a way of using the backdoor to collect it back.

What apps do u use. What apps run in the background.
Check your data usage on your phone to check what zaps your data.
Goto your settings > mobile data > data usage.
It would show you apps that consumes your data, either daily, weekly or monthly.
I use MTN too and I use a data monitoring app, my data usage corresponds to the my MTN data balance.
