I didn’t want to be overly critical with this, but this was, in fact, a Kemi Adetiba imprint, a supposedly accomplished filmmaker in these parts and a Netflix-commissioned show, for that matter.
The title, "To Kill A Monkey," might actually be the most apt and cleverly thought-out aspect of the entire project. The euphemism was nuts, considering the supposed subject matter. Unfortunately, that's where the fun ended.
The central theme of the show was Cybercrime , which I thought was a very important narrative to explore at this point in time. But if you weren't paying close attention, you'd think this was just another gang/drug turf war flick. It follows two friends with contrasting personalities, who are driven by misfortune into the world of cybercrime. I thought that was a solid premise... only if they had stuck with it.
The show juggled so many plotlines, attempting to tell stories in layers that should have built toward something meaningful. The problem? They were just building , with no plan on how to stick the landing. By the third act, each scene felt like it belonged to a completely different show.
I liked King of Boys, but Kemi Adetiba is starting to behave like a drug dealer who struck gold with a bomb hit and now keeps flooding the market with the same formula, just in different packaging , too scared to evolve and find something new. You could clearly see King of Boys DNA all over this , and it felt wildly out of place for the story at hand. To put it in perspective, the opening scene was this elaborate occultic ritual, that ended up meaning absolutely nothing.
The performances were okay-ish. The two leads, Buchi Franklin and William Benson, had enough chemistry to carry the show, but there's this new-age style of acting in Nollywood that I personally detest , it’s overdone, overly crass, and just doesn’t feel believable. It lacks a certain refinement. The show was also filled with way too many unnecessary characters , chief among them, an “Old Taker” played by Chidi Mokeme. He had no business being in this. It epitomizes my feeling that this would’ve worked better as a movie rather than a show. Because with a series format and approx. 8 hours to burn, all the unnecessary characters had more time to waste and added zero value to the story.
The production value was clean, as you'd expect from a Netflix-funded show. The pomp and props were shiny all sitting on top of a bad, not-so-well-thought-out script. And maybe that’s exactly what I should start expecting any time I see Netflix attached to a local show. 😩
Each episode ended with “Written and Directed by Kemi Adetiba” , which might be the core issue here. These big-name filmmakers often get that coveted Netflix sit-down and the heavy seed money, only to turn around and deliver polished garbage. If only they allowed other creative voices into the writers' room, this might have gone somewhere. I’ve genuinely seen Zikoko YouTube short stories that are better written than this.
This is probably why the technical aspects of our filmmaking haven’t progressed as much as the social media clout would have you believe.
Anyway, this was a tedious watch and honestly, I wouldn’t have missed a thing if I hadn’t bothered. So I truly wonder what all the praise I’m seeing littered across X is for... A special... special... mess. 🚮✨
abduleez1: HOT DAMN..... E be like say I don dey see vision. Isn't it few days ago I was talking about this Spartacus— House of Ashur TV series we were promised some years back and hearing nothing of it since we got a first look teaser a while back.
CoolUsername: Nigerian-made action horror comic. It's called Celestial Eyes. It follows a paranormal detective (who can violate my human rights anyday btw) who solves strange cases in Lagos.
Pretty good so far, it has nice art, the mc seems interesting, it also has fanservice and gore so I can't complain.
My biggest gripe is that there is some pseudo-intellectual yapping that feels like padding and takes time away the good parts.
All in all it was good read so I thought I'd give it shout here to support a Nigerian creator who is actually making good stuff.
PS: the fourth Pic is basically just the opposite of "Nah, I'd win."
James Gunn finally obliged and dropped the full mural we saw in the hall of Justice in The Superman movie. Apparently it was a History of Metahumans Mural.
With the incoming launch of the Tsunami that is the DCU, who's a top or good actress who's significantly well known amongst TV audience that can veritably play the role of our beloved №1 superheroine— Wonder Woman ??
I'd have said Adria Arjona, would have been a perfect match and facial resemblance— but she's too short. 🤧 Now I'm thinking maybe, Frida Gustavsson of VIKINGS: VALHALLA would be the perfect choice. Similar young age as Superman and Lex Luthor actors. Perfect height. Has the warrior looks and played a very similar role as Wonder Woman, has the elegance and everything.
But what other options we got?
Modified: Gunn has clarified that DC isn't casting based on specific role or movies, but by acting prowess. So the list of possible actors goes BIGGER.
AirBere: I've seen the news now and it seems you're right. When we call EPL best league in the world this is one of the reason. I don't even know who's the EPL president but Una president is known even in Mexican league.
Anyways, let's see how the season goes. My own is all teams should aim to win but fairness is always key.
Stop egging on this silly discussion here, you have been on this space long enough to smell bullshyyt propaganda from JP.
You claim you've seen the news and you're still here supporting what he said.
"The president of the CTA will rely on Chema Alonso as an advisor for Technological Innovation and AI"
That's his job description. The guy isn't a programmer, he wont develop AI tools to use with bar. His job will be basically explain stuff to the folks really in charge of the CTA. His field is cybersecurity, not IA. He was hired because he's a well known "nerd guy" in Spain, he's appeared in TV shows and news talking about internet risks and deepweb and stuff like that.
Now go search for "Jaume Roures Barca Studios" and "Jaume Roures CEO Mediapro" on Google and see what the company he leads is in charge of in La Liga too but you won't hear JP talk about it.
This is a new season PLEASE we don't need all these silly negative propaganda discussions here. You guys can go and do it on the Barca thread. Thanks.
These people are really tempting me to start watching Raw again, looks like it's just Smackdown I'll be boycotting cos I can't be missing The Great El Grande Americano speaking for the first time and the shenanigans with AJ and Dom.
Ever since AEW started Cagematch has devolved into a tribalistic mess. Now, it's just Team WWE marks and Team AEW marks brigading each other's ratings.
oyaskii: I usually don't agree with most of his takes but i tend to align with this one.
Films these days aren't really striving for sort of lasting pop cultural impact, it's all box office battle slops which will inevitably land on VOD in a month or 2, and everybody is gonna forget about it right after then.
If i really deep it, none of my truly memorable films that has really been profound, have been made within the last 10 years...maybe Oppie, can't really remember these slops like i would vividly remember "Terminator" saying "I will be back", or the Titanic going on it's ill fated maiden voyage with James Horner's Southampton playing in the background, or how i instantly lit, when i hear "The World's has changed", because i instantly know where is from. Not that these movies didn't care about making big bucks, they also cared about leaving a lasting impact.
Now, the entire blockbuster slate for this year are filled with movies, that has had so many iterations for years and years, and nobody is probably gonna remember this iteration when the year ends. Just look at the biggest movies currently playing now, "Superman", "the 1967th installment of Jurassic World" and the probably the 4th or 5th reboot (really don't know cuz i don't even care) of F4...none of these movies will be remembered, once they are dumped on VOD in a month or 2, Just like Thunderbolt* (2025) or Captain America BNW(2025) have been all but forgotten, but the buildups to these movies were so well made, you'd think you were in for a once in a lifetime moment, the icing on the cake, this week alone, i have seen another iteration of MK, Predator and Bloody Avatar(seems James Gunn is gonna make this forever) being announced for this year and none of this elicit any form of profound excitement from me, cuz i have seen it all and i know exactly what to expect.
Now i know, these reboots, and rehashing characters and stories from a more successful period of Hollywood, seems like a safe bet for the movie studios, a guaranteed payday if you will, but me that is a cinephile, that they expect to spend my hard earned money on these slops, what's in it for me?
So i should just go and sit, and watch "Earth Warriors save the Earth from OutWorld and the War Hammer welding Emperor for the upteenth time? or i should go see the Predator decide if he wants to be a hero or an anti hero for the thousandth time? or go help Avatar make another 3bn green when I can't even remember the last one, and the whole point of the movie has been lost since the end of the first one in 2009? some 15 years ago?...Hell No.
Point being....You will most likely find me waiting for these slops to become available on VOD, which thank f**k, it doesn't even take that long anymore, see them, forget about them, and wait till the next slop is out.
