PoliticsSUNDAY IGBOHO: Incarcerated In The 37th State Of Nigeria by pundit96(op): 6:03pm On Jul 28, 2021
As recent as the last official visit of the Beninese government to its Nigeria counterpart at the Aso Villa in February 2021 a tune for new alliance and dynamic relationship to accelerate even development between the cooperating states of Nigeria and Benin Republic was reset. As this states-action was real and backed with vigour, the local media report of the agreement as “making Benin Republic the 37th state of Nigeria”. Immediately after such headline were questions, fears and frenzies which is usual in the Nigerian media space. Questions like “why will Benin join a country whose destiny is bleak?” and “To what end is the joining of Benin in the political circle of Nigeria?” had to make the Foreign Affairs Minister re-issued a terse statement to allay those fears and frenzies. The statement says: “The President of Benin said as far as they are concerned, they would like the relations between the two countries to be so close as if Benin was the 37th state of Nigeria”. To describe in Jack Robinson the country called Benin Republic within the purview of geography and history in order to relate the matter in the discourse of diplomatic history and state relations is not to bore the topic rather to make it all encompassing. Benin Republic formerly Dahomey, is a small country in West Africa with a thin population of about 12 million people and shares borders with countries like Togo, Niger, Upper Volta (Burkina Faso) and Nigeria. Considering its size to Nigeria, its Eastern neighbour it is understandable of the reportage that Benin wants to become Nigeria’s 37th state. Estimated population of Lagos a state in Nigeria doubles that of Benin Republic while that of Oyo equals it. The major ethnic group in the country are the Fon, Aja and Yoruba who over the years have experienced ethnic clashes. Within the labyrinth of history, Dahomey or now Benin Republic when it changed name in 1991 has always been a famous for its role as slave’s port during the Atlantic slave trade that lasted for centuries. Close relations of Benin to her neighbours was strategic and the Yoruba areas of Nigeria being one of the most important of them. The advent of European colonialism however altered that closeness and gave new identities to the colonized lands. It is interesting to say that ‘Benin’ the country’s now official name after a new constitution was adopted in recognition of the people’s cultural affinity and ancestral roots traced to the Yoruba people living in Nigeria. In Nigeria there is also a city also called ‘Benin’ a capital of Edo state which also traces its origin to the Yoruba ancestral home of Ile-Ife. Although a century of European rule altered that borders and separated people who were shared the same identity and language but the affinity was still maintained through cultural institutions and seasonal trade of fruits and other local trades to Ajashe (Porto Nouvo) capital of Benin Republic as if it’s a trade to another state in South Western region of Nigeria. As noted by Prof. Toyin Falola et al., the area that is largely today Benin Republic was a vassal to the great Oyo Empire until the reign of Gezo of Dahomey a military genius clashed with the wane in influence of the Oyo Empire and ultimately led to the political break-away of Dahomey. The religious and cultural affinities like language and customs of the Yorubas is still conspicuous in Benin republic which is why some argue that the Republic of Benin is another Yoruba state married in another political marriage with other ethnic groups in Benin republic but officiated by the French Europeans unlike the case of their sisters (Yorubas) in Nigeria whose marriage with other ethnic groups was officiated by the British.
Tossing away from the background to the subject which is the incarceration of Sunday Igboho in Benin Republic and as emotive as it seems with international observation far and wide like that of General Dreyfus in the French Third Republic I will strive at being objective.
In Africa today or since independence a similar pattern to rise in the region’s political leadership and affluence have largely been through political struggle. Struggle against what if I may ask? Is it perceived Injustice and quest for state resources in order to take their ‘people’ out of hardship? With the way the African political system is structured can there ever be justice and equality? Today’s struggles reflected the pattern used in colonial and apartheid years that produced the Mandelas, Machels, Boignys, Awolowos, and Ziks yet they have been more unjust and lack compassion like that of the European masters. It is appropriate to say the struggle continues is the African story many years after independence.
The perceived injustice and political happenings in Nigeria has re-birthed new kinds of strugglers in Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and Chief Sunday Igboho who, going by the aim of their struggle is to liberate their ‘people’ from a system that is not working or favouring their people. We are all victims of the Nigerian system. A system schemed out by a white-man and aided by the unwarranted incursion of the men-in-khaki into the political circles of the country. The Nigerian system has been rigid and continues to be too conservative for change even in the face of time. It is interesting to know that only political change the country has experienced since its independence was through decrees and edicts where the General say jump and we can only ask how high should we?. Contrary to other commentaries, the military years drew us back in terms of political development and discussions which should have been heard in order to shape our destiny as a country and also to strengthen the democratic institutions. Political conversations of today are stale in my opinion but it’s rather late than never. Isn’t it crazy for open grazing to be a discussion in Nigeria of today? Today’s world sees top countries converse on STEMs in relation to their national development while our national howling still borders on routes and passages for cows. As they say, it is what it is. Back to Sunday Igboho one of the leading agitators of a new movement called Yoruba nation whose recent travail birthed this comment has an agenda to seek a quick secession of the Yoruba people out of a tiring and seemingly unfruitful marriage with other ethnic groups in the country called Nigeria. Their modus operandi has largely been through rallies and media statements. Prior to these movements, Sunday Igboho have had open confrontations with some ethnic group perceived as ‘enemies’ and who’s occupation have been perceived to be the cause of constant loss of lives, kidnappings and troubles to the local people and later issued them a quit notice in the Ibarapa axis. But who is this Landlord to issue such? Based on prints and media information even though inaccurate all seems to point that Sunday Adeyemo a.k.a. Sunday Igboho used to be politicians ‘good-boy’ and a mass-mobilizer in Yorubaland and in a video he said of his political machinations in South Western states of Oyo and Osun and that his school of political thought is affiliated to that of the prominent Oyo politician Alhaji Lamidi Adedibu. Going by this, Sunday Igboho possesses the crowd and political god-fathers who are under curtain to back his recent actions for secession. These actions have implications in a republic guided by laws which include jail and at very harsh sanction ‘death’. As an observer, I want to understand that lack of modern-day political intelligence, diplomacy and overzealousness coupled with fickle support swayed him into the continuation of his Generalissimo show in a 21st century world thinking the presumed war is that Kiriji wars or the Mugba Mugba that pitted Northern jihadists with the Yorubas war lords.
Today’s Nigeria may be run like that of a 17th and 18th centuries but the state resources and military arsenal are up-to-date which if used, causes carnage that cannot be stopped by the greatest of kinjikitile or the strongest of African bulletproof. The Nigerian government’s Cheka or secret police (DSS) have been used to silent, intimidate, and persecute people opposed to the administration and has made it seem our democracy is militarised in nature. In the face of this struggle Igboho also witnessed a July visitor who stormed his residence in the dark following a report of illegal possession of arms by the Chief. Gun-fights ensued, arrests were made passports was seized and casualties reported but Igboho’s disappearance. It was upon this that a man-hunt was issued by the DSS on Sunday Igboho who has become a fugitive and on the run.
Fortnight after the raid on his residence and being on the run Igboho was finally apprehended in Benin Republic by its intelligence and migration police on issues bothering illegal entry and intelligence report issued by the Nigerian government to neighbouring countries that if found he should be extradited back to the country to answer charges levelled against him. This arrest has seen outcry, variegated opinions on international law, human rights and states relations with this writing being one. His arrest has also seen committee being set-up by Yoruba Obas to seek the release of Igboho in their sister state of Benin republic after all Benin is still culturally affiliated to the Yoruba people of Nigeria going by history but then again it is only four months that the Beninese president visited Aso Villa and sought strong ties and cooperation which will perceive the country as the 37th state of Nigeria. If Benin republic fails to assist the Nigeria government to extradite the person of Igboho by listening to the plea of the Yoruba Obas won’t that be a breach to the cooperation it seek? Considering this is the very first test to live to the responsibilities of the desired arrangement. But if it successfully extradites Igboho back to DSS office in Abuja won’t this erode the Benin age-long affinity and cultural relations with the Yorubas? It may seem a betrayal to the Yoruba race that their sister town was complicit in the extradition and apprehension of their son. Whatever the outcome of this seeming long battle to extradition may be, the ball is largely in the court of Benin republic and also the destiny of Sunday Igboho. We will keep a close eye on the events as they unfold.

blafulfillersck:
well said?
If we have a reasonable government, negotiation is definitely logical but a government hell bent on enriching only itself against the will and survival of its people .....cannot work. If you think this govt cares about you, Pls think again. Even though they have plenty, they still covet the little you have. If you want to avoid wildfire, you must quench small fire before it becomes uncontrollable. Think about Mali! Nigerians have been groaning, murmuring, complaning for many years concerning the hardships, injustice, corruption that's bedevilling them on a day to day basis. A caring govt would have made decisions and policies that would meet the yearnings and heart desire of the people just as a good father would wipe the tears of his suffering child: but we have a bad father! Your protest is a disturbance and an irritant to them, they desire to quickly stop it not for the primary intention to fulfill your heart desires but to relieve themselves of the noise so they can continue their immorality. If you negotiate with them, you will be wooed by their sweet talks and empty promises, you will think you have won but you are actually a loser because they don't really care about you.
The system is bad, really rotten, we need a purge, we can push for it, we can drive a new Nigeria, we can drive a new world. Don't be fooled or cajoled. We can choose to hold back, we will suffer for sure and that will be fine.... a choice! we can also choose to hold our destiny in our hands, we will succeed for sure.... A CHOICE!
Thank GOD you said it’s matter of CHOICE. What looks 6 to you might look 9 to another

“… as the war (WWII) was going on Japanese diplomats were still in negotiations with their American counterparts as there was the need for damage control and restraint”
World History (Human Experience )
In the lowest moment in world history when humanity was facing brutality and homicide in the second coming of the world war there was still a need for negotiations and calculated diplomacy. So why not same in Nigeria during this period of unrest and bleak situation?.
No doubt that Nigeria is changing with a new dynamism (mass action) taking course particularly among her youthful section. This dynamism is remoted by the unfortunately systemic ‘way of doing things’ (in politics and governance) and now triggered by the punitive actions of the SARS unit which was primarily created to protect the citizens but ‘southernly’ failed to play its role and rather turned to an anathemic institution to the people. The yearn of this paragraphs is to seek the audience of the frontliners for a need to negotiate and take the objective of the mass actions to the government in order to control the damage, loss of life and restraint in the country. Diplomacy will always be the potent tool for peace because it is cheap because for war and other extreme tools for peace as proven to be costly (past and present). There is nothing wrong with having representatives or leaders provided they are accountable and responsive for the movement. It allows the other person(s) on the table to take the movement seriously and handicapped them on their ‘way of doing things’. Negotiations again is necessary for this movement as it helps in the streamline and articulations of the people’s demands to the other end of the table. Some quarters are hell bent on the idea of “no retreat, no surrender “ but till when? Until the terror unleashed get overarching? Or till the international community see it as a staggered struggle? No matter the situation or the struggle diplomacy and negotiation is needed. Now let’s move from the street to the table to talk our thoughts.
In addendum, police brutality may never be ended but be controlled to a desired level. Why it is opined that it cannot be ended is that it is a human that is on the black uniform and as long as that is the case we will continue to have case of police brutality as humans are infallible and some are naturally brutal.

This tells us something. Like the parable of King Solomon in the bible.

But the real mother of the child refused to give the child up for death.

CHIEF OF STAFF; A MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING

On Wednesday 13th of May, 2020 there was a pronouncement by the Presidency on a new Chief of Staff replacing the late Abba Kyari who lost the fight against the pandemic (Covid-19). The new appointee Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, an erudite scholar, seasoned administrator and diplomat extraordinaire now chairs the unsung office hitherto. With the announcement, instantaneously was a media frenzy that for two days (13th and 14th of May) it trended on the internet community of Twitter, most talked headlines on the dailies with congratulatory messages upon congratulate messages , encomiums upon encomiums and defamations upon defamations for the appointee. In the scheme of this latest sociopolitical hullabaloo, I as always did my findings on the of office Chief of Staff from 1999 when democracy was restored till 2015 before the coming of the incumbency. It is suffice to say that this piece will place a premium on online information (Wikipedia) and some text about the Office. The piece will aim to demystify the office as an ordinary appointment perhaps senior office and not as the 'de facto' president as tons of Nigerians viewed it because the appointee is not subjected to National Assembly screening upon appointment.

Historically, the office was created by President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo a former head of state upon his inauguration as the democratically-elected president of Nigeria after years of military incursion in Nigeria public space and it was first manned by a retired military General from Ilorin Abdullahi Muhammad Adangba. In his exercise, he is to select key presidential staff, manage and control flow of people in the Villa, protecting the interest of the president, negotiating with the national assembly and other government branches, to conduct the activities of all political department, show loyalty to the president office, 'likely' advice and take orders and information from his principal. All these as an anonymous individual in the cabinet (that cannot be heard) just like other civil servants. The first appointee General Abdullahi Muhammad Adangba served two administrations of Obasanjo and Yar'Adua from 1999 till 2008 when he resigned and replaced by Gbolade Osinowo who had a short term in office when he was replaced by Michael Oghiadomhe a politician from Edo state in 2008. Like the past appointee he is to carry out the exercise anonymously which he also did till 2014 when he was replaced by Jones Arogbofa.
With the end of the Jonathan's administration however and the beginning of the Buhari's term witnessed was a tupsy turvy in the political circle of Nigeria, a change of hands and a new force in doing things in the country. One of such expressions of this change is the Office of the Chief of Staff which since the inception of the administration many Nigerians believe it houses the 'de facto' president of the country. A divided opinion on the last Chief of Staff (Abba Kyari) brought media attention crossed with political intricacies and power-play politics in the State house with a leaked information that the CoS is becoming unbecoming as seen in a memo stating that all ministers, agencies and government departments must report directly to him before exchange with the president. A key thing in this incumbency- leadership style which are found in different book of histories that any leader is choiced to adopt any style that suit his philosophy and management of the country. Unlike past administration hardly Nigerians know that the Office existed nor the men that manned it. By this new style the office is now known and the late Abba Kyari was the most controversial in the recent political history of the country. Moving on with wave of time, a new appointment has been made, a household name in the field of international relations and academic scholarship, a man with an intimidating background in family, academic and career. Nigerians await the inputs of Professor Gambari in the drive to make Nigeria a giant of Africa both in rhetorics and realities, to make a Nigeria a home for every Nigerians and make Nigeria a great nation with enviable heights. As this appointment has been greeted with fanfare, hope and reservations all in all, it is to note that it is (appointment) based on loyalty, experience and capability and not an election which means the man and the Office is not answerable to any Nigerians except his principal. Expect no media interaction, expect no press talk and expect no insubordination even if his advice and ideas runs out of contrast with his Oga because the hallmark of that Office is LOYALTY so both the Office and the appointment is a much ado without nothing. Nigerians should go back to work, constructively critize government policies and eschew divisive actions and thoughts that will provoke national instability.

The piece has tried to come to terms with the reality of the Office of the Chief of Staff by looking at her historical transformation and establishment from the Fourth Republic till recent and also giving the sole functions of the Chief of Staff with a reminder to the people that it is only an appointment perhaps senior appointment in the cabinet with anonymity. The piece highlighted names of pasts Chief of Staff from 1999-to the latest Chief (Abdullahi Muhammad Adangba, Michael Aiyegbeni Oghiadomhe, Jones Arogbofa, Abba Kyari and Professor Ibrahim Agboola Gambari). It further subtly warn Nigerians on politics of division, media actions targeted at dividing the society and destructive criticisms. More importantly, the style of the president has only made the CoS office open and subjected to attention from different quarters that it houses the 'de facto' president of Nigeria a thought which is erroneous and which has made the latest appointment that was greeted with fanfare and reservations A MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING.

Nairaland GeneralConspiracy Theory: Understanding A Phenomena; Corona Virus Vs 5g by pundit96(op): 8:37am On Apr 12, 2020
Conspiracy theories are not in the new, like rainbows, they have always come and go. As theory seeks to explain ‘things’ which are beyond human reasoning conspiracy theory however, is an explanation of an event that invokes a conspiracy by sinister and powerful actors, often political in motivation. It is an explanation of events by conspirators working secretly to obtain some goal, usually understand with negative connotations. The thrust of this piece however is to give etymological description of conspiracy theory , demystify the idea of conspiracy theory as regards the scourge of the Corona pandemic (COVID-19), talk through conspiracy theories in the past, challenges and way forward.

*Keywords: Theory, Conspiracy Theory, COVID -19, 5G*

When we do not understand certain phenomenon like evolution of creation/man, coinage of names and origination of actions we turn to theorist and philosophers who sought explanations by giving detailed and expressive assumptions to assist our thinking. Charles Darwin best place in this collection of theorist as regards his classic evolution theory of man, David Boillat the French philosopher is also worthy of mention with his theory on the derivation of the country name Senegal. As theory seeks to explain things beyond reasoning and give some sort of conclusion to a phenomenon, the idea of conspiracy theory on the other hand, is "an intellectual construct", a "template imposed upon the world to give the appearance of order to events".(M. Barkun). Conspiracy theorists see themselves as having privileged access to special knowledge or a special mode of thought that separates them from the masses who believe the official account. Going by the above discuss on theory and conspiracy theory, the former seeks to push the frontiers of knowledge while the latter resist falsification and are reinforced by circular reasoning. In popularity Conspiracy theories are widely present on the Web in the form of blogs and YouTube videos, as well as on social media. In recent times however, the Web and social media has increased the prevalence of conspiracy theories.

*Examples of conspiracy theories*
A conspiracy theory may take any matter as its subject, but certain subjects attract greater interest than others. Favored subjects include famous deaths and assassinations, morally dubious government activities, suppressed technologies, and “false flag” terrorism. Among the longest-standing and most widely recognized conspiracy theories are notions concerning the assassination of John F. Kennedy, the 1969 Apollo moon landings, and the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the death of General Sani Abacha, as well as numerous theories pertaining to alleged plots for world domination by various groups both real and imaginary. (Wikipedia)

*Types of conspiracy theory*
Michael Barkun in A Culture of Conspiracy: Apocalyptic Visions in Contemporary America (2003) classified conspiracy into three; *Event conspiracy theories* which refers to limited and well-defined events. Examples may include such conspiracies theories as those concerning the Kennedy assassination, 9/11, death of Military Dictator of Nigeira Sanni Abacha and the spread of AIDS. *Systemic conspiracy theories*, in this theory it is believed to have broad goals, usually conceived as securing control of a country, a region, or even the entire world. The goals are sweeping, whilst the conspiratorial machinery is generally simple: a single, evil organization implements a plan to infiltrate and subvert existing institutions. This is a common scenario in conspiracy theories that focus on the alleged machinations of Jews, Freemasons, Communism, or the Catholic Church. *Superconspiracy theories* For Dr. Barkun, such theories link multiple alleged conspiracies together hierarchically. At the summit is a distant but all-powerful evil force.

*The Corona Virus (COVID-19) and the 5G Theory*
The global community is facing a decimating challenge in her health system as a result of the scourge of a virus called Corona, novel as it is, the Orients (China) where it was first recorded has witnessed a lot casualties in loss of life as humans are wanderers the geographical spread of the virus has plagued the Western world with the ‘international police’ (U.S.A.) of the globe not exempted even scoring high in recent statistical casualties of the COVID-19. The African fragment has neither escaped this novel disease but her cases are still relatively low compared to other nations of the world. In this period of wide uncertainty in the world as regards the pandemic, the ‘cold’ economic and political rivalry between the Orient and Occident has snowball into theories and counter-theories in explaining the origin, cause and course of the disease. One president fiercely remarked that it is a ‘Chinese virus’ while another indicted the U.S. Forces of masterminding atomic drop into the Chinese peninsula and causing the outbreak of the virus. In the scheme of things is also the 5G theory which has emerged as a tool for the cause of the virus to wipe out a major fragment of the world by a leading Oriental state. The 5G theory as the cause of the pandemic rhetorically evoked thought with astronomic and scientific terms of ‘radiation, combustion etc’ but there is no doubt it is a conspiratorial remark from forces of the East-West rivalry.

*Challenges and way-forward*
The challenge of the world as regard conspiracy theory and more importantly in this particular time is it will slow the pace of finding a panacea to combat the decimating virus and also causing divide in actions and reactions (Christ vs Anti-christ) among the people of the world instead of facing the challenges together as one body that have come one single father Adam. The gain of conspirators is to see divided opinion and distractions as it is now and only through right education and understanding of events which can only be known from regulated bodies and government agencies. The strong intensification of the theory has shown the level of fake news in the world today and it is better to flatten the curve by getting real and accurate information from the right bodies and professionals before spreading the news. As it is now one of such agent of causing divide in the world of today is fake and unverified news or information.
Conclusively, the piece tries to give an insight of what conspiracy theory is all about and scholastic opinion on the concept and what it tries to achieve. It further considered examples of conspiracy theory in the past and types of conspiracy theory. Centrifugal to the piece however is the discourse on Corona virus and the 5G theory which seeks to explain an internet spectrum of advancement of technology as the cause of the novel pandemic. A tool and result of the East-West eco-political rivalry as events unfolds. The article ends her submissions with the challenges and way-forward of the world on the 5G theory of COVID-19 which seeks to bring the idea of divide among the world instead of solidarity in the period of uncertainty.
