Johannesburg - Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend in the early hours of Thursday morning, apparently after thinking she was an intruder, Beeld reported.

The police's Captain Sarah Mcira confirmed the woman had been shot in the head and arm.

She died at the scene.

Pistorius is apparently in police custody.

Cape Town - Apple has launched an online bookstore aimed at school children and teachers in South Africa.

On Wednesday, the California-based company launched an online store that carries a range of textbooks that can be read on an iPad.

Not all grades are covered, but local distributor Core Group is in the process of rolling out more books appropriate for teachers and learners.

In addition to curriculum books, the website also offers study for various subjects and prices are comparable to physical books.

London - Officials say that Prince Harry will visit South Africa and Lesotho at the end of February on behalf of a charity that he co-founded.
St James's Palace said on Monday that the 28-year-old prince will spend 25 to 26 February visiting the charity's programmes in Lesotho, before attending a gala dinner in Johannesburg on his third evening.

The charity, Sentebale - which means "forget-me-not" - was founded by Harry and Lesotho's Prince Seeiso to help children affected by poverty and HIV in the tiny southern African country.

New York - Around 60 students at Harvard University have been suspended and others disciplined in a mass cheating scandal at the elite college, the administration said on Friday.

Faculty of Arts and Sciences dean Michael Smith told staff and students at the university near Boston that "somewhat more than half" of the cases under investigation ended with students being required "to withdraw from the college for a period of time".

"Of the remaining cases, roughly half the students received disciplinary probation, while the balance ended in no disciplinary action," Smith said in a campus-wide e-mail.

When the scandal first became public in August, Harvard said that as many as 125 students were suspected of helping each other in a final exam.

The university said a large number of undergraduates "may have inappropriately collaborated on answers, or plagiarised classmates' responses, on the final exam for the course".

Harvard, located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is one of the most exclusive universities in the world, with students paying about $63 000 a year to attend after winning a place in a highly competitive admissions process.

Smith called the scale of the cheating incident "unprecedented" and said reforms were being drawn up to "promote academic integrity and a deeper understanding of it within our community".

"We all can do better," he said in the e-mail.
