Johannesburg - South African singer Lira is excited to perform at an inauguration ball for American president Barack Obama in January, she said on Wednesday. "I'm very excited. I got the invite about three weeks ago," she said in Pretoria. "The president will be present during my performance and I hope I get to meet him." During the inauguration taking place in Washington on 21 January, Lira will perform two sets for about 200 people at the African-themed ball -one of the 10 official balls. She said December had been a busy month and she had not had the time to think of which songs to sing. "I kind of have to exist one week at a time... I have some ideas, but I have not really planned it, I wouldn't want to lie." Lira and her band are expected to leave on 19 January. The songbird was chosen from a shortlist of African musicians nominated to perform at the ball. SAPA |

Who knew that the biggest Stadium in Africa is bigger than any Stadium in the UK? |
paniki: It's not about your perception of size as you walk through the mall, it's about the actual number of square meters of retail space and as things stand Gataway has floor space of around 180 000, Sandton City(excluding Mandela Square) with its upgrade is now around 150 000 and Canal Walk is around 140 000. Eastgate has about 120 000 square meters of retail space which was comparable to Sandton City before it got a 30 000 square meter upgrade. Menlyn Park is smaller than Eastgateeish ja I get u now. |
paniki: Sandton City will be the biggest after the completion of phase 2 upgrade. Phase 1 upgrade is complete, which added 30 000 sq/m of floor space to the original 120 000 sq/m. Gateway stands at around 180 000 sq/mSandton City is small for me, I think the mall that comes 3rd is Hemingsway mall in East london after Canal Walk and Gateway mall. If you combined Sandton City and and Nelson Mandela square then ja they are probably bigger. But Sandton City alone nahhhh, even Menlyn Park in pretoria is bigger than Sandton city and some people claim its the biggers in SA. Sandton is actually the same size as Greenstone mall or East Gate mall. |

queensmith: WHy dont they ever have black women representing south africa like it should be?what do you mean "like it should be"? Africa has white people you know, same way as UK and America or aren't they african enough to represent the country?. Isn't that like asking why blacks were representing UK and America in the recent Olympics in london? Are nigerians who represented uk in the olympic british enough? Ok why was the american basketball team mostly black? The previous miss SA was black she even went to miss universe to represent SA. Some questions are just silly really. |
Johannesburg - Tears flowed and screams echoed around Lanseria International Airport on Tuesday night when American singer Lady Gaga arrived. "I can't believe it happened, I saw my idol. I've waited a long time to see her, it's the best feeling in the world," Bornman de Villiers, 24, said while sitting on the floor crying like a baby. Some people had been at the airport all afternoon to catch a glimpse of Mother Monster, as she is also known to her fans. Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, who goes by the stage name of Lady Gaga, was visiting South Africa as part of her Born This Way world tour. Hundreds of schoolchildren were there. A 5-year-old boy shouted: "I love Lady Gaga". People held up posters reading "Welcome to SA Gaga" and "We love you Lady Gaga". Outside on the viewing deck fans chanted "Gaga, Gaga, Gaga" when her plane landed around 19:30. Thirty minutes later she appeared wearing a black and gold dress, black gloves and sunglasses, and waved and blew kisses to the hundreds of people waiting for her. About eight bodyguards dressed in black and several more police officers escorted her. An airport official stopped her from entering the arrivals terminal where fans had formed a tunnel for her to walk through. A Big Concerts employee told Sapa the official felt there were too many people and that it was not safe for her. Disappointed fans screamed and shouted. "I can't fucking believe I had to wait all day and I couldn't see her," one man said. A woman added: "How could the police do this to us? We waited for hours." Matthew Gijzen, 24, said: "If it wasn't for the official I would have been able to see my idol." People then ran to the airport gate in a hope of seeing her convoy of six Mercedes-Benz Vito vans, three black and three silver, leave. Gaga however made her entourage turn around and spent about five minutes signing autographs and smiling for the cameras. "She came back in style for the people who stuck around for hours waiting for her," Lweendo Muntanga, 20, said. "Mother monster cares about her little monsters," said Dustin August, adding that he was "mind-blown for ever". After she left, elated fans exchanged pictures and stories about her arrival. They spoke excitedly about how she had signed photos and CD covers, how cute she looked, how friendly she was, and how they got to touch her. Gaga was scheduled to perform at the FNB Stadium in Soweto on Friday and at the Cape Town Stadium on 3 December. SAPA |
