I said it yesterday that the NEC meeting was just a village meeting and the decision to determine the secretary on June 30 has been thrown out of the window. Go back to Anyanwu and sit down with him for an authentic meeting.
PoliticsPDP NEC Under Pressure As INEC Validates Wike-backed Secretary by Putindbutt(op): 7:31am On May 28, 2025
The fact-finding committee of the Peoples Democratic Party National Caucus, led by Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas, informed the 99th National Executive Committee meeting on Tuesday that the Independent National Electoral Commission had recognised Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the party’s National Secretary.

On Monday, the NEC established a three-member committee led by Kefas, with Governors Dauda Lawal (Zamfara) and Peter Mbah (Enugu), PDP National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade SAN, as members, to verify whether INEC recognised Anyanwu, a loyalist of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, as the party’s scribe.

Multiple sources, including a NEC member, who spoke to The PUNCH on condition of anonymity due to a lack of authorisation to speak to the media, revealed that the Kefas panel informed the 99th NEC on Tuesday in Abuja that INEC had affirmed Anyanwu as the party’s national secretary in line with a Supreme Court judgment.

To properly remove him from office based on the decision of the PDP governors, and in adherence to the 21-day notice requirement, the party plans to reconvene by June 30.

The development may further exacerbate the crisis in the party and widen the schism between the party and the FCT minister, who threatened to pull out of the agreements he had earlier reached with the party leadership to resolve the crisis plaguing the opposition party.

Wike accused the party leadership of reneging on the agreements. In a statement on Sunday, the ex-Rivers governor announced his withdrawal from the reconciliation efforts, blaming Governors Seyi Makinde of Oyo and Peter Mbah of Enugu for the party crisis.

On the heels of Wike’s statement, the reconciliation panel led by former Senate President Bukola Saraki held an emergency meeting with key stakeholders on Sunday night.
The outcome of the meeting has yet to be ascertained.

The PDP has been dealing with internal political turmoil before and after the 2023 general elections. Issues such as the crisis in Rivers State, disagreements over the South South and South East Zonal Congress, the dispute surrounding the national secretary position, and, more recently, the North Central Zonal Congress, have further polarised the party.

Tensions have risen among party leaders, including Wike, and Governors Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), and others, who are displeased with decisions taken by the National Working Committee and the PDP Governors’ Forum.

These decisions, largely influenced by Governors Makinde, Mbah, and Mohammed, are perceived as attempts to whittle Wike’s political influence.
Despite efforts by the National Working Committee, Board of Trustees, NEC, and the Governors’ Forum to resolve these conflicts, tensions have worsened and spread across various states and geopolitical zones.

The persistent crisis caused the NEC meeting to be postponed six times, delaying important decisions about the party’s future. As a result, several party members, including Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, defected from the PDP to the ruling APC.

Following an extensive National Caucus meeting held at the Bauchi Governors Lodge in Abuja on Monday and Tuesday, the 99th NEC meeting was called to order at noon at the party annexe office, Legacy House, Wadata Plaza, Abuja.

A reliable source informed our correspondent that the 99th NEC meeting turned chaotic when a South-East Zonal member objected to the National Vice Chairman (South East), Ali Odefa, claiming he is no longer a member of the party.

The sources stated, “The findings of the Kefas Committee, earlier set up by the National Caucus, were presented to the NEC. The findings revealed that INEC recognises Anyanwu because he has not been officially removed.

“INEC told them that Anyanwu has not been removed and that the Commission must be given at least 21 days’ notice. It also has to witness the removal process.

‘’Therefore, the NEC decided to receive the South-East petition and scheduled it for further deliberation at another meeting slated for June 30 to perfect the removal process.

“Also, while the meeting was ongoing, Anyanwu’s running mate during the last Imo State governorship election, Jones Onyereri, moved a motion that the South-East Zonal National Chairman, Ali Odefa, should not be recognised. He argued that Odefa had been suspended and removed by a court ruling.

“When the situation began to get rowdy, Onyereri was asked to submit a formal petition on the matter at the next NEC meeting.”

According to the Kefas committee’s report, exclusively obtained by our correspondent, the Enugu governor, who met with an INEC representative, disclosed that no replacement could be made until Anyanwu was removed in line with the party’s Constitution.

The report read in part, “H.E Peter Mba met with INEC contact and reported to the committee the position/status of the National Secretary thus: That the commission still recognised Sen. Anyanwu as the National Secretary of the party in consonance with the Supreme Court judgment.

“That there’s no vacancy to be replaced until Anyanwu is removed in accordance with the Constitution of the party. That notice of 21 days should be given to the commission for any such meeting to remove and or replace an official of the Party

“That the NEC meeting should be in compliance with the provisions of the party’s Constitution and requirements in the Electoral Act in the case of removal/appointment of an official of the Party.

“The committee resolved to recommend to the forum that the procedure and the processes be followed to complete the acceptance of the recommendation of the South East caucus in order to lay to rest the agitation and put the Party back on track in South East.

“Also, the party in NEC should acknowledge the request/ recommendation of the South-East caucus to be considered at the next meeting, amongst other things.”

While presenting the communiqué of the 99th NEC meeting on Tuesday, Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, confirmed that the National Executive Committee had received the resolution from the South-East Zonal Executive concerning the position of the national secretary.
Damagum stated that the PDP NEC resolved to deliberate on the South-East Zonal Executive’s resolution at its next meeting scheduled for Monday, June 30.

The communique read in part, “On the part of the PDP, NEC restates our party’s belief in Democracy, the Rule of Law and the Supremacy of the will of the people as expressed through their free and unhindered democratic participation in multi-party politics and governance.

“The successful convening of the 99th NEC meeting clearly communicates our party’s unity and focus despite the challenges.
“Pursuant to the provisions of the PDP Constitution, NEC received and ratified the composition of the Committee on the National Convention and approved the conduct of the National Convention on Thursday, 28th to Saturday, 30th August 2025.

“NEC also received and ratified the composition of the Committee on the Zoning of National Offices ahead of the National Convention.

“The members of the Zoning Committee are Gov. Douye Diri -Chairman, Gov. Dauda Lawal -Vice Chairman and Gov. Caleb Mutfwang -Secretary. The members of the National Convention Committee are Gov. Ahmadu Fintiri- Chairman, Gov. Ademola Adeleke- Vice Chairman and Gov. Peter Mbah – Secretary.

“NEC also received the resolution of the South-East Zonal Executive with regard to the issue of the National Secretary of our Party. NEC resolved to consider the Resolution of the South East Zonal Executive at the next NEC meeting scheduled to hold on Monday, 30th June, 2025.”

PoliticsNasarawa To Host Nigeria’s First Electric Vehicle Factory by Putindbutt(op): 7:00pm On May 27, 2025
The Nasarawa State Government has promised to sustain its efforts in utilising the available lithium resources to ensure that the first electric vehicles factory in Nigeria is established in the state.

The Governor, Nasarawa state, Abdullahi Sule stated this on Sunday in Lafia, the state capital at an event organised by the a group under the aegis of Abdullahi Sule Gidan-Gidan Support Group, to celebrate the two years of his second tenure in office.

He explained that the state’s lithium reserves had received significant attention, particularly with the recent inauguration of a lithium processing factory in Nasarawa, built by Avatar New Energy Materials Company Limited.

The governor noted that working towards having an electric vehicle factory in the state, aligned with the Federal Government’s efforts to promote clean energy and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

“We will continue to engage investors and strategic partners to ensure that the second stage of the processing, which is the production of the battery and the eventual assembly of the vehicles, is done here in the state.

“My administration desires to achieve this, and even if we are unable to achieve it, I hope that anybody who is taking over from me in 2027 will pursue it to a logical conclusion.

“Because it is by achieving this that the state will be the number one economy we are dreaming about,” Sule added.

While promising that his remaining two years in office would be better than the last two years, Sule appreciated President Bola Tinubu for his impressive economic reforms and promised to fully key into the reforms for the overall development of the state and country.

Sule further expressed his gratitude to the group for organising the event to honour him as his administration marks two years in office, assuring that he would not stop working hard towards delivering the dividends of democracy to all residents of the state.

In his remarks, Deputy Governor of the state, Dr. Emmanuel Akabe, said lithium had always been in the state, but it took the foresight and ingenuity of the governor to expose it to the outside world.

Akabe further revealed that there is a huge quantity of lithium deposits in the various Local Government Areas of the state, affirming that the state government would leverage on it to attract investors.

“Electric vehicles use batteries which are produced by lithium, and Nasarawa State is the headquarters of lithium in the country,” he stated.

In her opening remarks, Convener of the event and Chairperson of the Abdullahi Sule Gidan-Gidan Support Group, Hussaina Sule, explained that the event was to celebrate the milestone achievements of the governor in the last two years.

She listed some of the projects including flyovers and underpasses in Lafia and Akwanga LGAs of the state, and the ongoing construction of the state’s secretariat complex in Lafia which would house all the Ministries, Departments, and Agencies in the state.

“Construction of over 600 kilometers of urban and rural roads, dualisation of Shandam road, and huge investment in the security of the state.

“Others are the employment of over 4,000 youths into the state’s civil service, the implementation of the new minimum wage, the implementation of over 10 years of outstanding promotions, and the construction of many blocks of classrooms, among others,” she added.

The convener, therefore said the state was lucky to have a man like the governor at this time, while praying that God should reward him for his dedication and commitment to ensure that development reaches the nooks and crannies of the state.

I think it should be criminalized across Naija to curb the excesses and arrogrance of Naija men when it comes to adultery.

I say this as a single woman who has been at the receiving end of far too many advances from married men. Most of them see nothing wrong with adultery, they make all kinds of excuses and arguments, to justify why it is not wrong.

Some will even argue that it is not a sin, it is an expression of love and feelings between a man and a woman. The way we practice this religion in Naija is too much, we over do it, blah blah blah blah. This is the latest argument I heard from a 60 year old married man grin.

I prayed for the salvation of his soul today. A lot of them think the bible is a joke and God is joking when he lists adultery as a sin. Perhaps making it a criminal offence may help to reset or rewire their brains.
So, what's your point?, married men do approach you, therefore it's a sin?. You're hiding under a book also written by men. Do you even know if a married man had the consent of his wife to seek another wife ?, haven't you heard women give consent to their husbands?. Better stop the hypocrisy and open your mind before it's too late. Even in the bible, the ones closer to God had more than a wife. Lastly, you're Africa, our culture and traditions predates foreign religion.

PoliticsCassava Producers Take Steps As Starch Import Crashes Price by Putindbutt(op): 6:17pm On May 26, 2025
The Nigerian cassava industry faces a bleak future due to what stakeholders described as ‘massive import’ of starch by corporations that formerly purchased locally.

The situation is said to have angered industrial cassava processors who spent billions to set up factories to produce starch and high-quality food-grade flour, forcing some of them to shut down operations, Weekend Trust gathered.

Farmers are now left to rely solely on garri processors, who give reduced rates that are less than the cost of production, since industrial processors no longer purchase cassava from farmers.

In December, a ton of cassava was sold for N120,000 and above, depending on location. However, the current price crash point is at N80, 000 to N90, 000 per ton, with one processor suggesting ‘it will get worse to between N50, 000 and N70, 000.’

Kehinde Lawrence is the programme manager of the Industrial Cassava Stakeholders’ Association of Nigeria (ICSAN). He told Daily Trust during a telephone interview on Wednesday that the processors and the farmers are now in a distressed situation.

“We are convening an emergency meeting as an association to also look into it and probably get some facts and figures in terms of the volume of what was imported, the volume and how it is affecting the offtake of cassava products locally, mainly food-grade starch and sorbitol. Sorbitol is a sweetener; it’s a major ingredient in toothpaste.

“We also have one of our members who is producing that locally now. But we have a lot of producers of food grade starch in many states across the country,” he said.

He said the association was concerned that a lot of people have gone into cassava production, even on a large scale now. But the output of the harvest, which is taken primarily by industrial processors, suffered a setback because these are the people who have the capacity to process.

He said the processors discovered that some of the end-users who were buying such cassava starch and flour locally were no longer buying.

“So, we’re wondering what’s actually happening. And it also goes back to the farmers because if they are not buying the products, the processors will not offtake from the farmers to process,” Kehinde said.

One of the processors in a WhatsApp comment wrote, “We cried to The Presidential Initiative for Unlocking the Healthcare Value Chain (PVAC) PVAC and NAFDAC, they seem not to understand the situation.”

“The government licensed 80 pharmaceuticals to import substrates, including corn starch, at zero duty.

“Miraculously, all companies buying cassava starch locally got their warehouses filled up with Corn/Cassava Starch….including the big multinationals.”

With over 40 processors currently processing cassava starch and flour, the association believed they have enough capacity to deliver high-quality food-grade starch and flour for the pharmaceutical companies in the country.

The union is furious that some of them borrowed money from the bank to support the farmers and it’s time for the farmers to harvest, but they cannot buy from the farmers to process because nobody is ready to take up their products.

“So, the banks are running after them and the worst the farmer could do is to sell to someone that processes garri or fufu. And if the farmer is selling that way, he may not be able to recover his own investment and so would become discouraged. That means they won’t work with us anymore. So, that’s a major challenge.

“But what we have done is after that meeting we had last Friday, we requested the support of NAFDAC and the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association of Nigeria; they need to work with us.

The processors want the government to encourage the manufacturing industry in Nigeria to buy raw materials that are standard and available locally first, before talking of importing from outside.

“Two weeks ago, the president was telling all the ministries to stop buying or procuring any material or equipment that is available locally.

These are some of the things we are also looking at that the government should also help us to flag off.

“As I’m speak to you; there’s no national policy on cassava. That was raised with the Minister of State for Industry and he has commissioned the department within this ministry that is serving that responsibility to work with all the stakeholders and ensure that before the end of this year something happens.

But we need the support of the president and the National Assembly to make sure that things materialize this year. So, if we have a national policy, I know it will take care of some of these things we are discussing now.

Malafiya Esson, who owns one hectare of cassava farm in Doma, Nasarawa State, said the price has fallen below what he can sell now because of the amount he spent on the farm.

A pick-up van load of cassava currently sells for between N80,000 and N100,000, as against the N170,000 and N210,000 it sold for about five months ago.

He said he would not sell at N80, 000 as the losses will be high, hoping for better prices in the coming months, but key players said prices may plummet.

But Mr Austine Benedict, who refused to sell his cassava in Awo Adaba in Kogi early this year, hoping for a better price, is also now licking his wounds as the price is down from N170,000 per tricycle load to N130,000.

He said that although prices during the rainy season are lower because cassava has a high-water content, he expects a slight decline.

FoodDangote Moves To Crash Rice Price After Rabiu's Pledge by Putindbutt(op): 5:46pm On May 26, 2025
Nigeria’s efforts to reduce food prices has received another major boost as Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, unveiled a multi-billion naira rice production initiative in Niger state. This is coming days after fellow billionaire Abdul Samad Rabiu vowed to continue crashing rice prices across the country.

Speaking at the opening of the 2025 Niger National Trade Fair in Minna, Fatima Abdurrahman, senior special adviser to the president of Dangote Group, said the conglomerate is developing a 32-metric-tonnes-per-hour rice mill on a 30-hectare site in Wushishi.

She stated that the project forms part of the Niger Food Initiative, an agricultural development programme launched by the state government in collaboration with the private sector.

The Dangote official said: “As part of our commitment to advancing agriculture, we plan to establish one of the largest rice mills here in Niger State." Abdurrahman explained that the high-capacity mill would significantly boost rice production and storage in the state, describing it as a cutting-edge facility that incorporates the latest innovations in rice milling technology.

She added: “This state-of-the-art facility ensures high efficiency, minimal waste, and premium-quality output. “Once operational, it will not only boost local rice production but also strengthen the entire agricultural value chain, from farm to market.

”Further, Abdurrahman noted that the mill would be supported by 32 silos, each with a capacity of 2,500 metric tonnes of paddy rice, and would include a captive power generation facility producing 5.8 megawatts of electricity, Punch reports.

She noted: “The project aligns with broader efforts to reduce reliance on the national grid."

Niger govt excited about the rice project

Representing Governor Muhammed Bago, Niger state commissioner for Trade, Investment and Industry, Aminu Takuma, said the state is fully open to large-scale agricultural investment. He praised the Dangote Group for its initiative and encouraged the conglomerate to leverage the state’s investor-friendly policies.

The minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Sabi Abdullahi, represented by Dr. Suleiman Ladan, reiterated the federal government’s commitment to promoting commercial agriculture, describing it as a cornerstone of President Bola Tinubu’s economic recovery agenda.

Takuma further revealed that the state government is taking steps to elevate the Niger Trade Fair to an international standard.

Meanwhile, Bisi Adeniyi, President of the Niger Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture has urged private sector players to tap into the state’s immense agricultural potential.

PoliticsNigeria Will Not Spend A Dime To Establish A National Carrier - Keyamo by Putindbutt(op): 5:16pm On May 26, 2025
Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, has affirmed that the federal government will not be reinvesting in the contentious national carrier, Nigeria Air, which was suspended shortly after its launch by the previous administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Minister disclosed this in a statement shared on his X page (formerly Twitter) on Sunday in response to an article
published by the Vanguard newspaper.

The article detailed the address Mr Keyamo delivered in Lagos on Friday during the launch of a book titled “100 Years of Civil Aviation in Nigeria: History, Issues and Prospects,” authored by Wole Shadare.

He explained that rather than investing in the national carrier, the government is open to receiving proposals from private or public entities within and outside the country for such purposes.

“The correct story should be that the FG will not invest a dime in establishing a National Carrier but is always open to proposals from private or public entities, both in and out of the country, that truly benefit Nigeria and Nigerians in establishing a National Carrier,” the Minister’s tweet read.

However, the Minister said before that happens, the government is concentrating on developing policies to ensure the growth and survival of local operators in the country.

Background

In September 2023, Mr Keyamo suspended the move to establish a national carrier less than two weeks after being sworn in as Aviation Minister and about four months after his predecessor, Hadi Sirika, unveiled the controversial airline in May that year.

After several failed promises, Mr Sirika launched Nigeria’s national carrier, Nigeria Air, less than three days before leaving office.

The development further heightened concerns among Nigerians, as many took to social media to question the move and Mr Sirika’s handling of the airline’s proposed operation.

The House of Representatives Committee on Aviation later called for the suspension of the establishment of Nigeria Air and the prosecution of those involved in unveiling the national carrier, describing the exercise as a “ fraud”.

Since leaving office, Mr Sirika and his associates are being investigated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged N19.4 billion contract fraud and abuse of office.

At the event on Friday, Mr Keyamo said the federal government had shelved the idea of funding a national carrier but would instead implement policies to enhance the efficiency of local operators to grow and compete with international airlines.

He reiterated that recent reforms, such as the recently revised insurance policy on leased aircraft, will help local airline operators in the acquisition and financing of aircraft.

“We have shifted focus to ensure growth and development for local operators through our policies”, Mr Keyamo said, adding that air traffic operators have been trained and retrained, just as revenue leakages had been addressed to boost earnings.

The minister also hinted that almost all foreign airlines had complied with his directive to patronise local caterers for in-flight catering.
