For centuries, leaders of the Roman Catholic Church have been chosen at the Vatican in private gatherings known as conclaves.
Much secrecy surrounds this conclave (scheduled to begin on March 12) and its historic vote, which usually happens in the days after a pope dies. But this year brings a rare twist: For the first time in 600 years, a pope has resigned.
The cardinal electors
Technically, any Roman Catholic male can be elected pope. But since 1379, every pope has been selected from the College of Cardinals, the group casting the votes at the conclave.
Many of the cardinals are bishops and archbishops appointed by the pope to assist in religious issues. Some work at the Vatican, but most are spread out worldwide running dioceses or archdioceses.
When it's time to vote for a new pope, every cardinal under the age of 80 travels to Rome to participate. In attendance this time will be 115 cardinals, 67 of whom were appointed by Pope Benedict XVI, who stepped down lastmonth at age 85.

The conclave
Once all the cardinals have arrived, the conclave begins with a special morning Mass in St. Peter's Basilica. In the afternoon, the cardinals walk to the Sistine Chapel -- with its iconic Michelangelo frescoes -- to start the voting process.
The vote is held behind closed doors, and its secrecy is closely guarded. The chapel is checked for hidden microphones and cameras, and the cardinals are not allowed totalk about the proceedings with anyone outside the group. If they do, they could be excommunicated.

Inside the Sistine Chapel, paper ballots are passed out to each cardinal, who writes the name of their chosen candidate below the words "Eligo in Summen Pontificem" (Latin for "I elect as supreme pontiff". Cardinals cannot vote for themselves.

When they're done, each cardinal -- in order of seniority -- walks to an altar to ceremoniously place his folded ballot into a chalice. The votes are then counted up and the result is read to the cardinals.
If a cardinal has received two-thirds of the vote, he becomes the new pope.
If there is no pope, as many as four votes a day -- two in the morning and two in the afternoon -- can be held on the second, third and fourth days of the conclave. The fifth day is set aside to break for prayer and discussion, and then voting can continue for an additional seven rounds. After that, there'sanother break and the pattern resumes.
The white smoke
We can't get into the Sistine Chapel, but we'll know whether there's a new pope simply by watching the smoke that comes from the Vatican's rooftop.
Ballots are burned after the votes, once in themorning and once in the afternoon. If a popehasn't been chosen, the ballots will be burned along with a chemical that makes the smoke black.
If the smoke is white, however, the world's 1.2 billion Roman Catholics have a new head of the church.
The pope is revealed
Traditionally, about 30 to 60 minutes after the white smoke, the new pope will appear on the balcony overlooking St. Peter's Square.Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, if he's not electedpope himself, will announce the words"Habemus Papam" (Latin for "We have a pope" and introduce the new pope by his chosen papal name .
The new pope will then speak briefly and say a prayer. His formal coronation will take placedays after his election. The last two popes have been inaugurated in St. Peter's Cathedral.

Yenagoa — Former militants in the Niger Delta, who were not registered in the extended Federal Government amnesty programme, yesterday, gave a seven-day ultimatum to be absorbed in the programme, warning that they would no longer guarantee the security of oil installations if the government failed to register them.
The aggrieved ex-militants, in a statement in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, by ‘General’ Inami David, said they deserved to be documented and registered, having surrendered their arms.
He noted that their expectations were dashed by the Federal Government team which carried out the verification and documentation exercise.
He said the team that carried out the exercise at the Sector 2 Command Headquarters of the Joint Task Force in Yenagoa, was biased.
He accused its members of placing some camps ahead of others.
He said: “We the aggrieved persons in the just concluded verification and documentation exercise are giving the Federal Government seven days to contact usand include us in the amnesty programme.
“Unless this happens, we will have no optionbut to resort to other means to get our grievances addressed, which will be of dire consequences to the Federal Government.”

A middle-aged pregnant woman, Mrs. Lateefat Odediran, was last Saturday allegedlybeaten to death by the husband of one of herfriends at Ibala area of Ede, Osun State. It wasgathered that the deceased who had eight months pregnancy had a quarrel with one of her friends and neighbour identified as Tawakalitu Musibau and the quarrel degenerated into exchange of fisticuff.
Daily Sun was reliably informed that Mrs. Odediran was given the beating of her life by Mrs. Musibau who was later joined by her husband who allegedly used sharp objects tobeat the woman to the point of death. The incident threw the entire Ibala area of the town into mourning and efforts by residents of the area to get the man arrested proved abortive as he fled immediately Mrs. Odedirangave up the ghost.
However, it was gathered that Mrs. Musibau who had issues with the deceased had been arrested by the police in Ede and efforts wereon by the police to arrest the fleeing suspect. Also, the police are currently on the trail of some residents of the area who could be traced to the untimely death of the woman.
It was reliably gathered that an argument had earlier ensued between the deceased and Mrs. Musibau, which degenerated into a crisis. Details of what led to the argument between the two friends could not be ascertained as at the time of filing this report but it was gathered that domestic issues could have been the cause of the argument. The Police Public Relations Officer for the state command of the Nigeria Police, Mrs. Folashade Odoro, who confirmed the incident said the police were still investigating the matter.

The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) meeting ended yesterday with the embattled Chairman of the Forum and Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi retaining his seat. Reading a two-paragraph communiqué after the meeting, an exhausted Governor Amaechitold newsmen that “after exhaustive deliberation of the issues regarding filling vacant positions, the Forum resolved that election in this regard be postponed until May when the Chairman’s initial two-year tenure will expire.”
Before the enlarged meeting started at 4pm, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors, who were in the majority in the NGF could not agree among themselves on who to support. The governors were divided into camps of those agitating for change in leadership of the Forum and those itching to pass vote of confidence on Governor Amaechi.
Daily Sun checks revealed that at the meetinghosted by former camp, the Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum and Akwa Ibom State Governor, Godswill Akpabio, could not galvanised enough support for the Katsina State Governor, Ibrahim Shema.
In his camp were Theodore Orji, Gabriel Suswam and Seriake Dickson, governors of Abia, Benue and Bayelsa states, respectively. The embattled Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi was present at the meeting. Daily Sun findings revealed that Abia and Benue states governors were also interested in the office even as they claimed to be pushing for Ibrahim Shema candidacy.
Immediately after the PDP Governors’ Forum meeting, governors from the North also met at the Niger State Governors Lodge, Asokoro, where they toyed with the idea of a candidate from the North. Governor Babangida Aliyu, Chairman of Northern StatesGovernors’ Forum presided over the meeting.The argument canvassed was that the Chairman of PDP Governors’ Forum and the Nigerian Governors’ Forum should not go to the southern part of the country.
Reason, however, prevailed over primordial sentiment as Babangida Aliyu and Sule Lamido of Niger and Jigawa states, respectively impressed it on members to support the incumbent Chairman and Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi to retain his seat.
Further checks revealed that even as the anti-Amaechi camp could not galvanised support to unseat him, feelers from the Presidency indicated that the anti-Amaechi forces had been told to sheathe their swords.About 27 states governors were present at the meeting held at the Rivers State Governors Lodge, Asokoro, Abuja.

Chief Anthony Anenih, one of the Peoples’ Democratic Party’s (PDP) most iconic and infamous figures, may emerge the chairman of its Board of Trustees (BOT) tonight as President Goodluck Jonathan moves to wrest power from the grip of State Governors.
There has been a stalemate on the issue sinceformer President Olusegun Obasanjo’s resignation, but our source at PDP secretariat confirmed that PDP Board members are meeting at State House Banquet hall tonight to consider reports from the Ojo Madueke and Jerry Gana's committees before going ahead to rubberstamp Mr. Jonathan’s choice for the vacant BOT chairmanship.
Meanwhile, some renegade state Governors, including Godswil Akpabio, Ibrahim Shema, Dickson and Gabriel Suswam are being used as spoilers to thwart any move by their colleagues to challenge Jonathan’s 2015 re-election ambition.
It is understood that President GEJ has obtained the support of the chieftains of the National Assembly (NASS), especially Senate President David Mark and House Speaker Aminu Tambuwal on his choice of Mr. Anenih.The two NASS leaders have agreed to soft-pedal on their positions on the 2013 budget as well as the vexed subject of pension fund scammers.
Mr. Anenih was briefly chairman of the BOT in2007 but was outmanoevred by Obasanjo, who used his leverage in the party and the greed of many of its leaders to his advantage.
Analysts say Mr. Anenih, who is widely knownas “Mr. Fix-It” on account of his ruthlessness, would be the perfect BOT leader for Mr. Jonathan because he knows how to manipulate elections and would be needed by Mr. Jonathan because he cannot win a freeand fair election on account of his dismal record.
“The 2015 election will be a referendum on the 16 years of the PDP in control in Nigeria, half of it with Mr. Jonathan as Number One orNumber Two, and during which Nigeria has walked backwards,” one analyst said. “To that extent, and whichever way you look at it,there is no way they can reasonably present an election campaign most Nigerians will buy. So Anenih, who knows where the bodies areburied, or where to bury them, will be the perfect choice to deliver a dark election for Mr. Jonathan and damn the consequences.”
Last year, Mr. Jonathan appointed Mr. Anenih to the lucrative post of chairman of the Nigerian Ports Authority, ostensibly to corner valuable funds for his forthcoming re-electioneffort.

As Nigerians continue to speculate on the political future of second term governors, Akwa Ibom State Governor, Godswill Akpabio has reiterated his desire to contest election into the National Assembly in 2015. The governor restated the plan at the weekend inLagos at the annual The Sun Awards. Akpabio, alongside 20 other governors would finish their second term as governors in 2015, after which they would no longer beeligible to contest for the office of governor.
While paying tributes to the Speaker, House of Representative, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal forwinning the coveted The Sun Man of the Yearfor 2012, the Akwa Ibom State governor said he was motivated by the Speaker in the way the latter has being piloting the affairs of the House. “Even as a governor, I look up to you that is why I am coming to the National Assembly.

Akpabio, who was the Sun Man of the year for 2011, commended the integrity of the award, saying he had wished that he would win the award for 2012 and keep it for one more year. According to him: “This is one award that I can point out that nobody lobbies for.

According, to the spokesman of the Esiri,Mr. George Esiri, an international photo journalist, the family after the round of consultation, has despatched a delegation to Abraka to conclude arrangement for date and time of the interment.
“As soon as that is done, the family will release details of the programme for everyone to see,” he said, appealing to Media to be patient with the family.

According, to a brief biography posted inIMDB website, “Mr. Esiri attended UrhoboCollege, Warri and later travelled to Germany to study engineering where he developed interest for theatre. Thus he began his acting career on stage in Germany.

Tragedy struck in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State, capital recently as a school teacher killed her two children. The middle-aged woman was alleged to have slashed the throats of her four-year-old daughter, Nneoma and her two-year-old son, Godswill, with a machete, while the kids were asleep last Wednesday.
The Ebonyi State police Command Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Sylvester Igbo, who confirmed the murder, said Uchaji fled their Elias Odili Street residence, in Abakaliki to Lagos after committing the crime. Narrating the incident, the elder brother to the father of the slain children, Mr. John Uchaji, described the incident as incredible, saying that there was yet no clue as to why the woman could have killed her children without provocation.
He added that the father of the kids came to him midnight on the day of the incident to report what happened. The state police spokesman however, said that the command has commenced investigations into the matter, adding that bodies of the children had been deposited in a mortuary for autopsy. He advised the family not to take laws into their hands, promising that the police would get to the root of the incident.
