LAGOS—Uneasy calm has returned to the troubled Mafoluku area of Lagos where no fewer than five persons were said to have lost their lives including one Jamiu Shodimu, following heavy presence of policemen now combing the area for the suspected killers. Although the Lagos State command said no arrest had been made in respect to deaths three days ago, it however disclosed that it was closing in on some major lead. The late Shodimu was murdered and his body dumped in front of a building on Mafoluku, which residents have since fled for fear of arrest. Report said the late Shodimu was a member of the outlawed Odua Peoples’ Congress, OPC, whose death was blamed on the lingering battle over control of a bridge that linked Ajao estate and Ejigbo area of Lagos, by factions of OPC. Reacting to the development, leaders of OPC described as untrue report that the clash that paralysed business activities in the area was caused by their men. They denied involvement of members in any fracas or illegal toll collections of foot bridge, let alone killing anyone, denying that the late Shodimu was not their member. Founder of OPC, Dr. Fredrick Fasheun, told Vanguard yesterday that he was not aware that members of the OPC were involved in the clash, claiming rather that those involved were members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW. Similarly, OPC national coordinator, Otunba Gani Adams, maintained that those involved in the clash were not members of the group, but those of the NURTW. But in a sharp reaction to the alleged involvement of NURTW, the Lagos State Deputy Secretary of NURTW, Mr. Paul Ogini, exonerated members of the union from the fracas, wondering what NURTW had to do with illegal toll collections on foot bridge. According to him, the allegation against the union was merely a way of giving a dog a bad name for it to be hung, arguing that the troubled area was dominated by OPC members and political thugs and not NURTW members. Ogini said, “Is there any garage there? Did the fight occur at the motor parks? It is true that every organisation has a bad egg that is why anytime chaos occurs in any part of the state, they blame it on NURTW.” |
LAGOS—Nigeria has repatriated around 11,000 foreigners mainly from Niger and Chad over the past six months to curb a growing Islamist insurgency, the immigration services said, Monday. ”The latest number of foreigners repatriated as at this morning is 11,000,” immigration services spokesman, Joachim Olumba, told AFP, updating an earlier figure. He said: ”The bulk of them are from Niger and Chad.” The Boko Haram Islamic sect, blamed for dozens of attacks in the country that have claimed hundreds of lives, is thought to draw some of its members from neighbouring countries. Olumba said the repatriation “has been intensified in the past six months following the Boko Haram insurgency,” adding: “We have an obligation to rid the country of undesirable elements.” He said immigration officers last week caught 120 people trying to enter illegally from Niger “and we quickly sent them back to their country”. Boko Haram’s gun and bomb attacks have shaken Africa’s most populous country which is divided between a mainly Muslim north and predominantly Christian south. Its base is in northeast Nigeria which borders Cameroon, Chad and Niger. Violence blamed on Boko Haram, whose specific aims remain largely unclear, has since 2009 claimed more than 1,000 lives, including over 300 this year alone, according to a tally by AFP and activists. The sect has previously said it wants to create an Islamic state in Nigeria’s deeply impoverished north. Nigeria’s military authorities last week said Boko Haram has ties with Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb. |

By Olasunkanmi Akoni LAGOS— As part of measures to improve teachers’ welfare in Lagos State, the state government has released 10 million to Teachers’ Establishments and Pensions, TEPO, for teachers’ car refurbishment loan in all the six education districts in the state. Permanent Secretary of TEPO, Mrs. Mojirola Bola-Sadipe, who disclosed this, said the gesture would go a long way in boosting the morale of teachers, which in turn, would enhance the performance of students. The Permanent Secretary reiterated government’s commitment to teachers’ capacity building in state secondary schools, stressing that the agency had proposed training for about 11,000 teachers for 2012 as against 8,000 in 2011. She noted that about 21 French teachers were sponsored toLome, Togo in 2011 for French language proficiency while 200 others would in 2012 be trained in Applied Linguistics at the Teachers’ Resource Centre, Owutu, Ikorodu. According to her, the essence of training and retraining of teachers was to improve service delivery so that the students could perform better in SSSCE and NECO examinations. The Permanent Secretary lamented the dismal performance of students in the last SSSCE results in Lagos State, saying the performance did not justify government’s investment on teachers’ development. She said all hands must be on deck for improved performance and noted that a new Curriculum from Federal Government was out, urging teachers in the state secondary schools to ensure that their subject contents covered the new curriculum. She noted that the administration of Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN) was aware of the challenges facing the education sector in the State and advised teachers to put in their best so that the Sector could attain its peak, adding that the State government has plans to recruit more qualified and professional teachers in year 2012 as there are a lot of vacancies to be filled |

Narrating his ordeal to Daily Trust, Baffa said in the early morning hours he went to the union's secretariat at the Bayero University.
