ajl: Obasanjo himself messed it up. He choose to support a half-dead candidate rather than someone that can outperform him in terms of record. He is a vindictive individual who was mad at the fact that Nigerians did not support his third term agenda. So, he made sure to hand over to someone whose health situation will cause crises. Controversial as it is, a 3rd term for OBJ trumps anything we have today. Yes, it would set a bad precedent, but there would’ve been substantial progress in many facets of national development today. Most likely. OBJ remains, in my opinion, our best president to date despite his disastrous transition plan; foistering two utterly incapable people in Yaradua / GEJ on the nation was a grave error of judgement . I am certain he deeply regrets these choices today Nigeria is currently in dire straits and I fear too many of us underestimate the precariousness of our current situation. To emerge from this mess, our development as a nation must outpace our uncharted race to the bottom. We must deploy our best minds - local and otherwise- to superintend over our affairs as a matter of national urgency/priority. We must make difficult decisions and take major national transformation strides to bring about cultural, economic, social and political change. Sadly, the current leadership with Buhari at helm, is a disaster, utterly incapable of such depth of initiative. I hope we can emerge, intact as a country, from what may now be an inevitable crash to the bottom! |

madridsta007: Everything rises and falls on leadership, my dear friend. What you are seeing here is a clear example of failed leadership. Failed leadership at the top, slowly and in some cases, rapidly permeates to the roots. When the IG of Police see that his boss, Buhari does not care, the IG does not care. When the Police at the State Level see that their boss, the IG does not care, they do not care too. When the 1 million boys see that the State Police are only interested in chasing supposed Yahoo boys and extorting money from innocent Nigerians, they take to the streets.
After all, there is no one to stop them. There are many academic papers and books about failed states. Read them.
This is how Failed States evolve. From Somalia to Central Africa Republic, to Libya, to Nigeria, the stages are the same. We can continue deceiving ourselves. On the streets, sadly, the Failed States plays out. Weak, unpatriotic leadership begets weak institutions which begets chaos. This is why EU and Western Nations were evacuating their citizens. They had run their simple simulations and have seen that a break down of law and order was forthcoming. Did they evacuate their citizens from South Africa, the country with the highest COVID cases in Africa? Or from Rwanda? Or from Botswana? No they didnt. Those countries have relatively strong institutions that can be relied upon.
Which institution in Nigeria is relatively strong? Or average? Lemme guess: None.
Nigeria has always had weak/ average institutions. Sometimes you’ll have the odd strong ones, like NAFDAC under Akunyili. But there was a President Obasanjo enabling and supporting her. You negate the effect of weak institutions with strong, democratic, competent leadership, a leadership patrotic to the State so they can build on those weak institutions. This is what Obasanjo, Yar Ardua and GEJ, to varying degrees of successes provided.
In Beau Harry, you have someone who is the complete antithesis of what a fractured country in the Global South needs. The police are loyal to their noses who are loyal to their political elites. They are not loyal to the masses. If the political class, none of them cares, you think the police will care?
Anyway, we can continue deceiving ourselves. Nigerians are brilliant at that. Till the nation— or what’s left of it— sets forth at dawn. Well written. There was glimmer of hope with some past leadership of Nigeria, Obasanjo, especially in his last term. The green shoots of national rebirth was in gradual emergence. Institutions headed by strategic minds, supported by fearless and purposeful leadership. Round pegs in round holes. What we have today will NEVER get us anywhere near where we ought to be. Slow, insincere, lethargic, lacking of strategic thinking, nepotistic, feudal, incompetent. With the current regime, it’ll be another lost decade. |
