He has tried. I know hindsight is 50/50, but it would have been more impactful if he retired after the last AFCON after finishing as the best player from that tournament. He'll still be missed now regardless but I'm just saying...
zoboizee: Phillip Otele and Peter Agba (left footed midfielder) are good enough to have earned a call up to the National team. They have the talents to bring extra force to the team. Their not being invited all these while speaks volume of the criteria for invitation in the National team. It should be what you possess & can add and not whether you played in the Serie A, La liga, Ligue Un or Epl. Back in the days, Odion Ighalo was quite a talent but beacause he was not in the big league, they never cared and never invited him.
I'm confused. Didn't Ighalo play in the 2019 AFCON and - I think - 2018 World Cup?
zuchyblink: me too. Our defence, midfield is poor. We are going to miss Benjamin. Chelle should introduce new players. Durosinmi,Otele and Peter Agba, from their clips I watched,I am impressed.
Were they in the preliminary list? I'll have to go check again.
Just watched their clips. I'm particularly impressed with Peter Agba. Maybe it's because I'm just hearing of dude. He seems like the type of physical player we need who doesn't hesitate to make important runs forward. Takes too many long shots though.
elyte89: The decisions the NFF makes after the AFCON both in terms of their leadership and the actions they take will show whether they are truly serious about rebuilding and improving this team. It’s obvious we are not winning this tournament, but what happens next is what really matters. If the NFF chooses to ignore the problems, sack only the coach, and keep the same old faces and failed structures in place, then we should be prepared for d worst outcome; qualifying for the 2030 World Cup will be very unlikely.
Everybody involved was complicit in our failure to qualify for this World Cup. Every single one of them. From the NFF's criminality that knows no limits, to the puzzling complacency of the players in the DRC game, the poorly timed boycott, Chelle's questionable tactics of ignoring Onyedika and Akinsanmiro, leaving our midfield without depth, as well as his obvious lack of preparation in the event of penalties.
This 2026 World Cup miss was in many ways far more painful to me than the one in Qatar. How can they be launching 48 teams at the mundial, in freaking USA (arguably the most popular place in the world), and Nigeria of all people isn't going for Pete's sake? With a squad that has Osimhen, Lookman, Fredericks, Chukwueze etc? I'm not sure I can ever get over this blunder until the next FIFA qualification cycle.
Anyways, the Super Eagles are condemned to win the AFCON this year, because that's literally THE ONLY WAY to atone for the World Cup miss. Whether they win it or not, it does nothing for me though. At best, it will just give me assurance of a bright future in the hands of Chelle (if the NFF will let him).
Personally, I would rather see a bunch of fresh new faces (especially in the midfield) at this AFCON and have 60-70% of the squad that played in the qualifiers dropped. Afterall, majority of them will miss out of the next World Cup due to age and/or retirement. We might as well start building a fresh team now before the next AFCON and WC qualifiers.
"Guaranteed 3 points", just like our WC qualification was guaranteed when we saw the group back in 2023 and wrote off Benin, Lesotho, Rwanda and Zimbabwe.
The earlier we start thinking like minnows, the better for us. Nothing like guaranteed 3 points.
Truidstarr: Na so. After two nations cup matches, mouth go change.
If they can do a miracle and actually start performing consistently in GWG, then I'll gladly sing their praises every week for their club side. But for now, they're useless to me and should go to blazes.
Odiriance4all: Gen Z has never really experienced the full benefits of good democracy. If the government wants young people to stop hailing or clamouring for the military, then it must prove through its actions that democracy can actually work, deliver results, and improve their lives.”
AndSunGorilla: Is it true Russia is planning an Aba-Made World Cup tournament to include us, Cameroun and other countries? Perhaps, we fit win that one.
A tournament for underachievers. The Underachievers World Cup. 🤧
Orkpekyandega: I am not going to throw my support behind any of the African side at the World Cup. I am praying for Jamaica to upset DR Congo. If in case DR Congo scales through. I did be glad if they end up d!sgraced at the event. I ha'te nonsense. These African sides deserve no support from Nigeria.
To be honest, Jamaica have been very unconvincing so far, but if they can beat DR Congo, I'll be supporting them and England at the mundial.
Amedino99: none of them are expected to win the mundial anyways so its almost a waste of support but if anyone deserves suppport, it should be cape verde. Mainly because they are first timers and the only fellow west african countries we dont really have a rivalry with.
That's because we haven't crossed them yet.
We didn't have beef with Morocco until we beat them in the last WAFCON, and Lookman won the last APOTY over Hakimi. They've been hating ever since.
There's just something about Nigeria that rubs other fellow African countries the wrong way when we meet.
I'm not sure why most people on this thread hate Sunday Oliseh. He's intelligent, rational and easily one of the more likeable individuals out of that 94 set. Look at him here giving Eric Chelle his due credit.
