The 25-year marriage of Hollywood and political power couple Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver looks to have come to an end following a joint announcement earlier today.

The brief statement comes after increasing speculation about their relationship following the end of Schwarzenegger's tenure as governor of California and his desire to return to the big screen.

"After a great deal of thought, reflection, discussion and prayer, we came to this decision," the two said in the statement.

"At this time, we are living apart, while we work on the future of our relationship. We are continuing to parent our four children together. They are the light and the centre of both of our lives."

The couple's four children are aged between 14 and 21. The marriage had always seemed solid even amid the flurry of controvesy that surrounded Schwarzenegger's political campaign. Shriver, a respected journalist and member of the Kennedy clan, stood by her husband, even defending him against allegations about his conduct towards women during his time as an actor.

The Austrian born former bodybuilder has strong political views, and his Repulican stance on several issues were in direct conflict with those of Shriver who comes from a Democratic background. Despite a strong start to his political career, the final few years of his run as Governor were difficult and the actor is now said to be actively looking for movie projects to kickstart his film career.
