CareerWorried About Coronavirus Disrupting Your US Undergrad Plans? by rahul1(op): 10:12am On Jul 29, 2020
As a provider for test prep and admission counselling services to students in 40+ countries, we get a lot of questions from parents on the impact of Covid on UG study abroad and admissions for Fall 2021 and Fall 2022.. These questions are arising from residents of the US or Canada as well residents of other countries who are looking to send their children abroad for undergraduate studies. We understand that it is an anxious time for both students and parents. We wanted to give our perspective as per today’s situation. As the situation is rapidly evolving, we will continue to monitor and publish more articles to answer any queries that students and parents may have.
Amid all the gloom, there are positives emerging that we feel will result in the situation getting much better over the next year. High school students looking to start undergraduate studies in Fall 2021 or Fall 2022 should not need to worry as those are dates quite some time away. We hope that overall the world would have a feasible solution to Covid-19 by then

Starting July 1st until September 30th, you can take it any day of the week, including Saturdays and Sundays.

That means you have PLENTY of options. In some cases, you may be able to book a test date for 24 hours in advance! Of course, this is not guaranteed and depends on how lucky you get.

To be safe, I’d check out the ETS GRE website and look at all of my options!

EducationWhat Is GRE And What Are Its Advantages To Indian UG Students? by rahul1(op): 5:57am On May 29, 2020
GRE is an entrance exam through which UG students from all over the globe can apply to MS programs in the US (& a couple of institutes in Singapore).
It is just a filtering method that tests you in three major areas - Quantative Aptitude, Verbal Aptitude and Analytical Reading/Writing skills.
Clearing the GRE does not guarantee you a place in any university if it is not accompanied with a stellar resumé. Meaning, you will need to participate in worthwhile extracurricular as well as co curricular activities. Also, if you have written a paper on some topic and got it published in some international journal then the selection process becomes much easier for you.

EducationWhat Is GRE? How Can I Prepare For It? by rahul1(op): 6:42am On May 21, 2020
Stage 1: Take a GRE Practice Test:
Take a full-length, sensible practice test to discover what your Quantitative and Verbal scores are currently. Preferably, the test outcomes will incorporate your scores as well as data about what kinds of inquiries you did well on and which ones gave you inconvenience. This data will enable you to structure your examination plan.
Another advantage of taking a training test is that you will get comfortable with the test's configuration and timing. At that point as you contemplate, you will know precisely how you'll utilize what you're figuring out how to expert test questions. This is very spurring!
You will likewise have the capacity to audit the test, and perusing the clarifications of each inquiry will fortify what you did well and enable you to comprehend your oversights.
Stage 2: Set Your Study Schedule:
At the point when your GRE is 2 months away, there is a threat of tarrying. All things considered, you likely have a great deal of things that need to complete today, so it very well may be difficult to cut out the time and vitality to examine for the GRE. Be that as it may, the days and weeks will sneak past quicker than appears to be conceivable, and before you know it, the test will be seven days away—and after that tomorrow! Try not to let Test Day overwhelm you.
Considering most days of the week will improve your score more than contemplating a couple of days seven days. Numerous understudies find that considering for 5 days seven days in three 30-minute fragments, for 90 minutes every day, encourages them gain huge ground. Furthermore, if vocabulary is a territory you have focused for development, plan to convey cheat sheets with you and work on GRE vocab for the duration of the day.
Stage 3: Develop Your Study Plan:
In what manner would it be a good idea for you to think about? A successful methodology is to initially utilize an asset, for example, a GRE book or GRE prep class to get familiar with certain methodologies or substance and after that follow up by rehearsing what you simply realized with test-like inquiries. Applying what you realize immediately to the kinds of inquiries you'll see on Test Day will enable you to set your insight so it stays with you.
Amid the most recent week before your test, accentuate your qualities. For instance, on the off chance that you get most inquiries concerning geometry right, at that point practice geometry addresses a few times this week to help your certainty and guarantee that you can depend on this aptitude.

EducationHow Hard Is The GRE Quant For Non-maths Background Students? by rahul1(op): 6:11am On May 15, 2020
Depends - when you say ‘non-maths’ background, do you mean to say you didn’t take math as a subject in college or in high school?

Because GRE Math largely tests concepts we learn in high school, NOT college.

The concepts as such (Algebra, geometry, percentages etc) aren’t hard to understand.

But what makes GRE Math a little difficult is

the questions are framed in a tricky manner i.e. they are not ‘direct’ questions and
you have limited time to answer questions.
So even if you do know the concept, if you can’t answer it within a certain time limit, you will lose points.

EducationHow Do I Get A Good Score In The GRE Vocabulary? by rahul1(op): 8:45am On May 08, 2020
Well, you will definitely find exhaustive resources for this answer. but, it boils down to how you learn and practice things.

Even though going through new words daily through books and flashcards might help you but you won’t be able to internalize these words if you don’t practice them.

You would also need to go through one or two examples to help yourself better.

Basically, you need to structure your learning.

I have not tried out all the things mentioned in the answers but, I can very well suggest the following three things for me which worked:
English vocab builder: The English Vocabulary Builder app from Galvanize Test Prep is a unique learning tool: why study a long and boring list of English words when you can experience a gamified vocabulary journey - one that is bound to be thoughtful, exciting and fun!
EducationWhich Is The Best Material To Prepare For The GRE? Is It Magoosh Or Galvanize? I by rahul1(op): 5:58am On May 06, 2020
Both have high-quality GRE prep courses available to you. That’s why they are so popular.

In terms of study material alone, I cannot say if there is a huge difference between Galvanize and Magoosh - although, Galvanize has been known to have superbly high quality Math questions (which is why you will read so many reviews of students saying Galvanize Math really helped them do well on the test)

I think it will come down to the OTHER aspects of their products - think about how easy it will be for you to get explanations for any doubts you will have, think about if there is somebody who will oversee your progress, think about how much feedback you will receive after your tests. These elements should help you decide between the two options.

Of course, another easy way to decide is to read reviews from other students like you - Which is the best GRE Online Program: Magoosh, GRE Edge, Crack Verbal, Chalkstreet or Galvanize test prep?

Note: I am partial to Galvanize Test Prep myself simply because they have so many free GRE prep resources to offer AND because they courses were founded by Indians who studied at universities like Stanford, Harvard, IIT and IIM!

But don’t just take my word for it, read reviews, do your homework and then choose!

Good luck!
EducationHow Do I Prepare For Verbal In The GRE? by rahul1(op): 8:43am On Apr 30, 2020
You can do the following things:
Read newspapers like New Yorker, New York Times etc. As per my knowledge the way these newspapers have content is very similar to the one you will find in the original GRE exam.
Download word apps and start learning words from them. My advice will be to use the English Vocabulary app(entrayn.com/galvanize/vocabapp/?referrer=utm_source%3DFBGroup), GRE test prep app(entrayn.com/galvanize/greapp/?referrer=utm_source%3DFBGroup). These are the ones I used and it proved to be helpful I think.
Improve your reading speed while understanding the context. In GRE exam in Verbal section you have to solve 20 questions in 30 minutes. That means 1.5 minutes per question. But this may not prove to be enough if you cannot read quickly while understanding the context chances of making mistakes increase because actual exam environment is different from practice environment. For this read some good novels and newspapers as mentioned above.
Become aware of question pattern on Verbal section. If you have given Powerprep test then you may have found out that from such question number to such question number i will be getting Sentence equivalence questions or RC questions. When you know such things then it becomes easy as there will be no surprise in the type of question that you will be facing and so you will be mentally prepared.
Last one is Practice, practice and more practice with time limit. Don’t think too much about scoring too high. Just focus on the process and love it. Fall in love with the words and reading. Understand the context and everything else will be fine."
EducationWhat Are Some Good Apps For Building Vocabulary? by rahul1(op): 7:37am On Apr 23, 2020
As per various psychological researches, the best way to learn new words is to associate them with something you already know. Also visual associations help a lot in learning new words in very short time.

"English Vocabulary App" which is based on this concept is the best app for learning English Vocabulary and it helped me a lot. In this app difficult English words are linked with pictures and memory keys are developed to remember the meaning in a fun and fast way. Also, there are Synonyms, Antonyms, Usages and you can bookmark and revise the words which you do not know.
Educational ServicesHow Should I Plan My Preparation For The GRE? by rahul1(op): 8:30am On Apr 22, 2020
One year is plenty of time, so you're good to do. How you should go about preparing for the GRE depends a lot on where you stand right now.

The Quantitative Reasoning (Math) part of the exam is fairly easy for anyone with an engineering background, so that can be tackled by solving a few practice tests to ensure that your speed and accuracy is adequate. Aim at getting ALL questions correct.

The Verbal Reasoning part of the exam is where most Indian students need plenty of preparation. It's important to understand here that the VR part doesn't intend to test just your vocabulary, per se. Rather, it intends to test your reasoning and analytical skills, and vocabulary is just tool. Through comprehension exercises and other questions, the aim is to see how well you can analyze arguments and draw conclusions from a given text.

Vocabulary
Try and gauge your vocabulary by attempting a few tests given in the Barrons GRE book. If you feel it's decent (you know at least 50% of the words), your job is rather easy. In my case, I could attempt about 65%.
If you feel it's lacking, there is this red book (now it is white) called Word Power Made Easy by Norman Lewis that a lot of students seem to love. I have only read it occasionally, so I don't have a strong opinion about it, but its etymology approach is useful, especially if you've never seen language that way. It is good for vocabulary, but you'd better ignore its grammar advice.
Try to at least complete the word lists given in Barrons. It's not exhaustive, but it's a fairly good collection. There are about 3500 words in there, and it will take you a fair amount of time if your vocabulary isn't great to begin with. Expect to spend about 3-4 hours per word list.
Apart from this, you can check out online resources too

Reasoning
This will come largely with practice. As you work on the vocabulary, keep solving practice tests and analyze how many of your errors were not because of vocabulary issues but because of logical / reasoning issues. These are the ones you need to work on. You'll get better with practice, and will also improve your vocabulary alongside.
As I said earlier, the GRE is not a test of raw vocabulary. Instead of merely mugging up words, try to put them in context. Get a feel of how those words are used, where those words are used. Get a sense of whether a word is used in an approving sense or a disapproving sense. Try to appreciate the nuances between words that appear very similar in meaning but are still not interchangeable.

This is what will help you more, both in life and in the examination.

Closing Notes
If you prepare well and prepare properly, you'd come off with a much stronger vocabulary and reasoning ability. This is a useful asset in academia, as well as in everyday life.
Students who start with relatively low vocabulary and then ramp up significantly during GRE preparation often suffer from what I call obnoxious-word-usage-syndrome, where an over-enthusiastic attempt to use the newly acquired vocabulary results in prose that is not only pathetic but that often makes little sense.
EducationHow Was The Experience To Write The GRE At Home Because Of The Corona Virus? by rahul1(op): 6:37am On Apr 21, 2020
The ETS has only very recently announced at-home tests for people around the world (barring China and Iran for now).
From what they’ve mentioned on their website, here’s what we know about the test:
The exam pattern will remain the same, with breaks between section
For security reasons, the test will be monitored online by a trained human proctor from start to finish.
For this reason, your computer will need to meet certain requirements before you can register to take this test
Now, I do know that ETS is conducting a webinar for test-takers to explain how the test will be conducted. The webinar is free to attend.

Educational ServicesWhat Are The Career Impacts Of COVID-19 On Graduate Students? by rahul1(op): 8:22am On Apr 17, 2020
If so, it’s not looking good. Of course it’s too early and we dont have all of the data yet but considering we are in the throes of an economic recession, it’s safe to say the job market will not be kind to everybody graduating this year.

In fact, students in the very best IITs and IIMs of India are finding their job offers being rescinded. [1]

Of course, the impact will vary country to country. Some countries will fare better than others. For instance, the US economy was booming before the Corona Virus impact with unemployment numbers at record lows.

While this has changed after the Corona virus impact over the last month, given the fact that it is the world’s largest economy with immense ability to create stimulus packages to kickstart the economy, we expect that it will be among the first to recover.

So while graduating students this year will have a hard time regardless of where in the world they are, incoming batches of students will be affected in different ways, depending on which country they are studying in.

EducationHow Do I Prepare For GRE Verbal Reasoning When I Have A Very Bad Memory? by rahul1(op): 9:06am On Apr 16, 2020
To do well on the GRE Verbal Section, you do need a fairly strong English vocabulary - which means you need to know the meanings of a few thousand GRE-level words.

However, the good news is, understanding the meaning of a word doesn’t necessarily require a strong memory.

Simply knowing the meanings of words won’t help you do well on the GRE. You need to understand the meaning of the word and be able to use it in context.

Many people spend months memorizing 1500+ GRE words and find that they still don’t do well on the GRE - because they don’t know how to use the word and they don’t understand what it means when used in passages.

That being said, the first step to understanding a word is to know what it means.

Step 1 : For you, I recommend using the ‘Ultimate Vocabulary Prep - GRE’ App.

It makes remembering the meaning of words easy because it comes with 1) pictures for each word 2) synonyms & antonyms 3) word used in sentences 4) audio clips.. AND the learning process is in the form of a game!

So you’re never bored.

The App was created and designed by Stanford University + IIT alumni so you can be sure it’s really good. (Read the reviews as well, it’s the highest rated App for a reason!)

Here’s a screenshot of what you can expect :

Step 2 : Once you find yourself learning words on the app, use the quizzes on the app to test yourself.

Next, start using the words in conversations yourself! If you can make these words a part of your everyday vocabulary, it becomes much much easier to remember them.

Step 3 : Third, read reputable publications. Look for words you’ve already learned in these articles.

This will reinforce what you’ve already learned and ensure you truly master the word.

Notable publications include The New Yorker, The Atlantic, The Hindu, The Economist.. These are good places to start.

The golden rule here is to give yourself as much exposure to the words as possible. You’ll find then that you don’t need to memorize the meaning of the word because you’ll understand what it means.

I hope this helps!

Good luck with your exam!
EducationHow Much The Campus Placement Effect For Covid-19? by rahul1(op): 7:20am On Apr 13, 2020
It’s a little early and we don’t have all the data yet -but we know the global economy is set to take a serious hit as a result of the pandemic so it’s likely campus placements are going to be affected too.

In fact, one unfortunate piece of news is that 40 placement offers at IITs and 35 at IIMs have been revoked so far[1]!

In fact, the director of IIT-Delhi had to publicly appeal to companies to honour their word of hiring students at campus placement events.

If the IITs and IIMs are facing a setback, it’s only a matter of time before other institutes do too. If you’re currently a final year student worried about your chances, my advice is to keep your options open.

Sit for placements, do your best and hope that you secure a decent job offer at a company that’s good. But in the meantime, if you have any interest in higher education, I recommend applying to universities abroad for continue your education.

The job market will not be kind to freshers this year. Hope for the best but prepare for the worst!
