It will - Safaricom is backed by 5 partners including Vodafone. MTN by I think only by Chinese. Ethiopia are interested in Mobile Money - M-pesa.

MTN has at least 10X more revenues than Safaricom, it's got crazy financial resources with little debt. I don't think it's backed by the Chinese, it just needs 1 or 2 Joburg banks, like Standard Bank and FNB, and it can come up with the funds easily. And it has experience in getting licenses in these former communist/war-torn countries.

I think it stands a very good chance of getting the Ethiopia license.

Great. Why are south african police unable to deal with crime and drugs. Kenya criminals have no hope. There is just a long tradition of allowing police to extrajudicially execute criminals if they don't get lynched by public. I'd say Nairobi crime has really gone down.

That is totally unacceptable in SA. We endeavor and aspire to being a country that respects rule of law. We can never normalise extra judicial killing of criminals. Yes it happens but we have institutions/ombudsman to investigate and hold the police to account.

Let me guess it's the poor in the slums who are routinely gunned down by the state and no one asks questions? What about journalists who pry too much? Are they executed as well?

So Kenya is a typical 3rd world country under that veneer of being a civilised and developing country? That doen't bode well for the future.

If they get Ethiopia license - they could go as high as 30B. Ethiopia is huge untapped market - with 40% market penetration.

Could Safaricom outbid MTN? That is the question.
