Ada was the only person who fought for him vigorously. He managed a simple smile as the warden dragged him away to be executed. The folly of her struggle rang true to his head. Calistus must have planned everything perfectly.
Oya stand still! The warden said as they tied home to a stake. So, this is the end. He thought. All the dreams and hipes, all he planned and promised Loveth, all will end here. His mind was far away, even as the pastor was saying the last prayers he would ever hear.
Ready! He heard the command from far away as he closed his eyes, trying to travel to a far away land in his mind.
Fire!
Stop!

†****†###################
Is that all?
Yes sir. Loveth said in tears.
Okay. Arinze, take her to your office and let her stay there. Kolade, take this warrant and arrest Mr Francis now!
Yes sir!! Both of them answered.
Kolade left there fuming. This was not the timing he needed. After today, he had instructed Thunder to release the girl and claim that she managed to run away. He wanted Ebuka dead first but roping in Calistus. Now the D.P.O has ordered his superiors to quickly call off the execution, just like that! Work of months inside the drain.
I hope they get there late. He muttered to himself. He shook his head. What if this thing back fires at me? Thunder is in custody and nothing will stop him from opening the whole can of worms about Mr Francis, himself, Calistus and Mr Mogu. In fact, a good statement from Thunder will destroy everything and everyone involved.
Thunder must die! He told himself. He cannot be allowed to stay alive.

Ebuka looked at the sky from the little window in his cell. As he was spending his last hours on earth, he glossed over what had been his life- his mother, his siblings, Mr Francis and his neighborhood, Mr Matthew and his school. All his life history flowed in from his memory and he could find no resolution to it.
His cell mates had watched in silence as he cried his heart out when Calistus left. His heart could not find the strength to forgive him. How did he not see it? Calistus had been jealous of his mother's attention and love of him for ages, and he leaving the family business did not help. Even when he came back and his mother's behest, Calistus still carried that grudgingly look about him. Now that gurdge will cost him his life.
Mr Francis will now have his daughter to himself, Ebuka mused. He was quite sure that Loveth was alive and well and Mr Francis just hid her in order to implicate him. He remembered how other witnesses, who had more wits than Mr Francis went about saying half truths and complete lies. At times you wonder if he really had so many enemies or it was money that brought them.

Since the last effort she made to escape, they had chained the door of her room. She paced around the room looking for something to either break through the door or the burglary proof window that let in air and light, but apart from a rusty crowbar, there was nothing that she could use.

Outside, the police and Thunder's thugs were engaged in a gun fight.

Bungalow, bring that AK wey dey that kitchen cupboard. Bring am here sharp sharp. Matches, pass that cartridge. Thunder said above the sharp sounds of bullets flying.
Matches flung the cartridge carelessly, landing it just in front of Thunder's position and in the line of fire.
Come pick am, idiot! Thunder cursed as Silver passed a loaded pistol to him. Not you! He shouted as he dragged Silver back. Keep shooting. Matches! Come and pick this cartridge, mad man!
Matches moved quickly to pick the cartridge but as he was about to pick it, a bullet pierced his hand.
Argh! He howled as a hand dragged him back.
Thunder scowled as he contemplated what to do. Silver, go check for Bungalow inside! He shouted.
Silver crouched in order to move towards the house but stopped as a gun rested on his head.
That was the end as Thunder found himself surrounded by the police and Loveth free.

Ten minutes later they were in Ajegunle, planning on how to take out the thugs present. Detective Arinze had counted 10 thugs, not counting whoever was inside. Two of them were holding locally made Dane guns, two more with locally made pistols, one with an AK-47 rifle, and four others with cutlasses. The one facing the entrance had a machine gun in front of him.

Detective Arinze looked at his men, the whole six of them.
Guys, move out!
The speed at which everyone dispersed was like a Formula 1 race car, yet the area was without any peculiar sound.
The first person to be taken out was a burly guy with body hair all over him. The next two were taken out quickly as well. The four guy was been taken out when Thunder came out to take a piss.

That was the beginning of pandemonium.
Loveth woke up to the sounds of guns firing off. Quickly she shook herself off her bed and moved her ear to the door.
Police! Na Police!!
That was all she could hear but that was enough. She knew what was happening and she realized that it was a chance to escape.

Grnnnnn! The noise of the phone ringing at the other end. No special ringtone, he mused. It rang three times before someone picked it.
Hello, who is this?
You gave me your numb......
Hey, hey, better listen to me! If I see you near my husband eh, I will......... The voice trailed off and he could hear faint sounds of arguments in the background.
I am sorry about that. He heard that on the phone after some minutes. She is the jealous and non trusting type. I try my best........
Get to the point! Detective Arinze said, blood boiling. I don't have time for your marital issues!
I am sorry. I am Dimeji, I need your help. Some thugs have taken residence in an uncompleted building.
So? Arinze asked with non interest. It is known that thugs live in uncompleted buildings in order to conduct shady activities.
They have a girl kidnapped in there.
And?
Someone who have testified in one of your cases have been visiting her.
How do you know all this?
He fainted on the day a lawyer asked him questions.
Mr Francis! Detective Arinze's mind went on overload. What's the address?
The building beside Number 7 Abacha road, Ajegunle estate, Mushin.
Good. Thank you. He cut the call.
Arinze looked at the lady sleeping. He walked out of the room and dialed another number.
Mustapha, gather the guys to my place!

Detective Arinze woke up with a start. He had a headache, caused by the immense amount of drinks he took.
As he stood up from his bed, shrugging off a naked lady besides him, Arinze remembered the events of the previous day Detective Kolade had taken him to at least four different bars. Two bars existed on their own and two more were in hotels. Every bar he ended had ended up six bottles less due to him. It was a miracle that he was not in a gutter currently. That would be a shame to himself and the Nigerian Police Force (NPF).
Miracle. That was the name the lady besides him bore, that is if you are nice to call her lady. A prostitute was an accurate name, but it was beneath him to call her that. He vaguely remembered Kolade urging him to try her out, as he had never done such before. He had drank too many bottles to say no.
As he reached to his coffee maker, he saw a note with numbers on it and a name. He picked it and remembered that someone had accosted him in the bathroom, claiming to have some important information about a kidnap in their area before giving him the paper. Detective Arinze had slipped it to the backside of his pocket when he rejoined Detective Kolade to continue his drinks.
He picked the paper and went for his phone, coffee in hand.

Ebuka choked on thin air.
Yes, I did this. I plan this. I am the black sheep in the family, the wolf to the sheep in the family. Thats not the reason though. I won't have bothered if mother did not place you above me concerning inheritance.
Ebuka's stare could light a fire without fuel. It has always been me and you. Always about how mother always put me above you. Calistus listen to yourself. You were the managing director in one of Mama's firms, you had enough influence to get anyone hired or fired, you were paid well and you had the respect of others. Why?
What do you mean by why? Calistus shot back. I was the one that had to give up his dreams and aspirations for the family. I was the one shouldering the responsibility of taking care of the home and business when you went on your epic adventure. When mother fell ill, I .....,.........
The same thing I would have done. Ebuka replied resentful. This does not make it better, Calistus.
Calistus' smile was back. But it does. After all, this is justice. Justice for years of misjudgement on her part and insolence on yours. I have mother's reasoning and understanding of the world. I deserve all of this.
So you tell yourself.
That does not matter. What matters is that you will be dead by morning and that's that. Sweet dreams, brother.
Calistus walked away in smiles. Make sure that he is well treated. He told the guard.

Hmn. Ebuka grunted.
Am sorry about this. Calistus looked smiling. This is as painful for me as it is for you.
Really, Calistus? You are here looking hale and healthy and obviously happy.
I am not as happy as you think. His smoke disappeared. I was just trying to be cheerful.
OK.
Calistus leaned towards the prison bars. I am truly sorry for your pains. To end your life this way is quite depressing.
How is Ada taking it?
She is holding up, but I suspect that she would break soon. Mr Bamidele isn't taking it easy too. He keeps moaning about how the family has been scattered after her death and how brothers should not be fighting each other.
What about you?
Well, to be frank I don't know what to think. Yes, I will inherit a lot of properties but the fact that you are dying because of that is saddening.
Thats a lie. Ebuka's eyes shot fire. You are happy about it, I suspect that you planned this.
Yes I do. Calistus.

He thought about his sister, Adaobi. She had been the baby of the house and his mother had tried her best to shield her from this reality. Yet she was the one who seemed to turn out the strongest. She was calmer than him, even after he was arrested. She always assured him that everything will be fine, giving him courage while filling him in on what everyone has been doing to make sure that he gets released. It was from her he realized that Calistus had done nothing so far. In fact the last time that Barr. Osaze and her came to meet him to discuss bringing in Calistus as a witness, she was the only one who objected. She stated that Calistus was behaving too shady to be trusted, giving nothing to the cause apart from shutting down everything she suggested. Barr. Osaze saw no reason to ignore him and even called her arrogant.
At the end it was Calistus who put all the nails to his coffin. He appeared remorseful after that, though he could be pretending.
A sudden thought went through Ebuka's mind, the same thought that he had been pushing out.
Calistus was the culprit.
As he groaned inwardly at the conflict of thought, a guard came to meet him.
You get visitor.
As the prison guard moved away, he saw Calistus give him a weak smile.
How are you, brother?

Ebuka looked up to the sky, feeling melancholic. It was the 5th day after his verdict yet it haunted him like a terrible dream. He remembered everything- his knees slumping, his sister fainted, the mixture of emotions that saturated the courtroom. He saw Calistus face, looking like he just swallowed some cow feaces.
Later that day, Barr. Osaze promised to get an appeal, only for him to have his appeal fail yesterday. He was then visited by Mr Ademola, who explained that the principal had tried to come to the court on the last day, only for him to be attacked on his way to court. Kemi had been released immediately after the attack, so the person after his life must have known this.
The mysterious person who is sponsoring his enemies, who planned this. He knew nothing of this person, just that he must be well connected and quite close to him to pull this off.
He was trying to get his mind off Calistus. Calistus the accuser, he called him in his mind. He wanted to seriously believe that Calistus had nothing to do with this. He and his younger brother had butted heads more times than not and most of the time he had come out tops when his mother intervened. This had left his brother quite angry and resentful during his early teens but he had changed later on. Thats what Ebuka hoped anyway, since they kept butting heads even at his mother's death.
Even after his brother came to visit him.
Even now.

Nike was his first and currently only girl he had romantic feelings for. He was young, in secondary school and naive, thinking that they had shared something unstoppable. He always came around to visit her and they shared whatever he brought from home, ranging from biscuits to cash. He had publicly taken insults for her and even got himself a good beating from some seniors over her. All that ended when he caught his Mathematics teacher teaching her the art of motion and propulsion in his office. His heart was shattered into many pieces which was grounded to dust when he got to realize that she was a 'free for all' girl.
He wiped his brow and went into the office. Right now Nike was faraway, married and maybe divorced. She had no hold on him and he was determined that Ada will not replace her in his memory.
Guy, wetin you wan do this night? I get one club for V.I wey I dey hit. I hear say the babes there make sense.
So? He looked at Detective Kolade quizzically.
I need person to follow me there now. E go make sense if we go together.
Detective Arinze shook his head, but then stood up.
Let's go. He knew he needed a time out.

Oga! Oga!
Yes? Detective arinze looked at the constable rushing towards him. since the failed attempt on mogu, he had taken a less than interested view on the Okonkwo's case. the facts that his superiors took just a glancing view at kolade's disappearance and that kolade had decided to ignore the case altogether did not help, as it left him standing all alone in a huge mess.
That persin wey kill im mama, dey don sentence am to death!
Ehen? When did it happen?
Na this afternoon, na today dem don the final hearing.
Arinze's stomach twisted in agony. He knew that Ebuka was innocent, at least that was the analysis he could come out with. Of course going to court to prove his innocence was trying to bore a hole into a mountain using your hand and a nail.It was going to be a lost cause to even open the case again, unless.....
Abdul, what did the defence lawyer say?
Sir?
The lawyer wey talk for am, wetin im talk? Shey he talk say im go take am go another court?
No.
No? Detective Arinze thought. Normally that will be the first option, after all it was not the Supreme Court that delivered judgement on this case. In fact a Magistrate Court is not even a high level court.
He thought of Adaobi and groaned inwardly. He should have had her number since, probably ages ago but he knows better. He can't afford to mix emotions into his case and that is what will happen if he tried it.
He had little contact with her throughout the case, but that was more than enough for him to develop feelings for her. Since the first day he saw her, beautiful in sorrow and grief, his emotions have stirred in ways it has not been since Nike.

Barr. Osaze took him to a corner once the recess had started

Calistus, what did I say about answering questions on who did what on that day?
Am sorry. I was nervous there. I don't know what.........
What do you mean by that, Calistus? Mr Bamidele asked, looking furious. Do you know what you have done?
Calm down, Mr Bamidele. We know that the witness booth cab be nerve racking in the right conditions. But Calistus, this will likely be the end of the case. If the judge was different, I could have tried to convince the judge otherwise but then.......
But then ?
Barr. Calistus looked around warily.
There is something off about the judge. He has given the prosecuting judge too much leverage and he does not seem to look at the case objectively as every judge should.
But he has not given any verdict.
Yes, Ada. He hasn't. But his body language spoke otherwise.
What's body language?
The way the body reacts to pieces of information that the environment gives.
Barr. Osaze, let's hope you are wrong. Mr Bamidele said. For now, these legs need to rest.
That's true.
They all walked towards the pews in silence.

A few minutes later, the court resumed.
The judge stood, looked at Ebuka and shook his head.
The evil that men do live after them. That Mr Ebuka here has committed all to the altar of ambition and have broken the laws of our land is a shame. The fact that he is already the main recipient of his mother's generosity when she sheltered him like a good mother makes his offences more grievous. This is my judgement.
Mr Ebuka has been found guilty of abducting a school girl and the possible murder of the said girl as well as the murder of his mother. He is therefore sentenced to death by the firing squad two weeks from now.
Court arise!
Ebuka's mouth suddenly ran dry.

So your brother just worked that hard for nothing?
He got his salary nah, even allowances.
So he was not cheated.
Yes.
Good. Did he at any point express dissatisfaction with the job?
No sir.
Barr. Ademola scratched his wig. Mr Calistus, can you tell me where he was at the time of the discovery of your mother's murder?
He was sleeping in one of the rooms, I can't remember which one.
Did he use the knife that the previous day?
Yes.
To do what?
To cut meat.
Which time was this?
Around 3 in the afternoon.
What did he cook with the meat?
Nkwobi. Its a traditional dish.
And he used all the meat?
Yes.
What else was eaten that day, after the Nkwobi?
Mum took fish pepper soup.
Good. What knife was used to cut the fish?
It was the second knife.
Mr Calistus, you are in the court of law and you swore by the Bible. Lying here is a serious offence.
I can't remember. It was some time back. But we have many knives in the kitchen.
True. But forensic studies showed that it was only that knife that was in use that day.
But the housemaid may have washed the other knives.
Which means that the alibi used by the defence attorney that the accused used the knife to cut meat is null and void. This means that the only option left is that Mr Ebuka Okonkwo used the knife to kill his mother after which he hastily disposed of the knife.
The lawyer turned towards the judge. That will be all, Your Lordship.
As he walked back majestically, Calistus dropped his head on the witness stand, looking distraught.
The witness may return to his seat.
After Calistus walked back, the court went into a silent moment, waiting for the judge to make his judgement.
The court hereby orders a 10 minutes recess.

Barr. Ademola, do you want to cross examine the witness?
Yes Your Lordship. Barr Ademola said, raising from his bench and walking towards Calistus.
Mr Calistus, you said that your brother came back home because of your mother?
Yes, she invited him.
And he accepted?
Yes.
Doesn't this contradict his previous stance on self reliance?
He said that he took the option because he had no other.
Is that true?
Yes.
Yet he has a certain friend in school, one Mr Friday.
I know nothing about that.
Good. Did he at one time control Arizona International?
Yes, that was his first job.
Oh, good. Do you know anything of his dealings there?
No sir.
But you are the current CEO, are you not?
Yes I am.
Then explain how the current CEO had no idea of the dealings of the previous CEO?
I know a bit of it, but I don't have any knowledge of the details concerning each transaction.
But you know about the profit made?
Yes.
Did you meet it when you became the CEO?
No. My mother had withdrawn the profit and taken the money to another account.
Did your brother get anything for his labours? I mean at least a bonus for moving the company forward?
No.

Mr Calistus, are you a Christian or Muslim?
I am a Christian.
Swear by this bible.
Calistus placed his hand on the bible and swore.
Mr Calistus, can you tell this court your full name?
My names are Calistus Onyebuchi Okonkwo.
Who are you to the accused?
I am the younger brother.
Same father and mother?
Yes.
What do you know about the accused?
He is my elder brother and the first child of the family. He worked at Arizona International and Madiza Limited as the CEO until six months ago.
What happened?
He moved to Ikoyi and started teaching in a secondary school.
Why?
He said that he needed to be independent from the family and stand on his own.
Okay. So he left the house?
Yes.
Did he have any argument with his mother?
No.
What about you or your sister?
None of that happened.
Then what happened that he came back to the house?
His house rent finished.
Okay, so he had no friend to squat with?
No. In fact he was invited by our mother.
Okay. Where did he sleep throughout his stay there until she died?
He slept in the visitor's room.
Where is that?
That's the first room from the main entrance.
What about the kitchen?
Just opposite the sitting room.
Barr. Osaze bowed to the judge. I am done examining the witness.

Objection overruled!
Aha!
Order in the court! The clerk shouted as cries of injustice filled the air.
Order! Order!! Order!!!
The cries continued for twenty minutes, the proceedings coming to a halt. After calm was restored, the judge adjusted his gown.
For disrupting court proceedings, I fine everyone present, #200. This will teach you that this is a courthouse, not a village square.
The court got noisy again as entropy rose up for another five minutes. When that had died down, the judge beckoned on the lawyer to continue.
That will be all, Your Grace.
The prosecution lawyer went to his seat, feeling fulfilled.
Lawyer for the accused, do you have any witness?
Yes I have. Barr Osaze answered.
Please bring him forward.

I added nothing! Ebuka shouted.
Of course you added nothing. I wanted to check if your mind was still here. Back to the topic. Can you tell us why you chose to cook that day? I mean, you have arrived a few days ago but you did not cook until that day.
Sir, I have replied this question before, I have no ulterior motive. I just wanted to do something for her.
Barr. Osaze shook his head at the information just blurted out.
So I can take it that your relationship with her is bad before?
No.
But you just admitted that you wanted to cook for her because you wanted to do something good.
Yes.
So why did you want to do something good for her? Have you been bad to her before?
No.
But you have not been in the best of terms with her.
Ebuka sighed. He knew that this will not end nicely.
Yes.
And she recently changed her will, didn't she?

No sir.
Then finish it quickly, we don't have time for melodrama.
Barr. Ademola curtsied to the judge and tge n faced Ebuka.
You still maintained the stance that you had no hand in your mother's death?
Yes.
Then explain why your fingerprints were found on the knife that stabbed her.
I used the knife to cut beef earlier that day.
But from the confessions given by all those present, you don't Cook in the house.
Yes, that is true but I decided to see if I could make something special for her that day.
Special?
Yes.
What was the occasion?
Nothing, I just wanted to be good to her.
Mr Ebuka, you decided on the day that she died to be good to her?
Yes. Tears were beginning to form. How was I supposed to know that she will die that day?
Hmn, you did not know she will die that day, did you?
Yes.
But you knew she will die someday soon.
I knew she will die someday, I can't see when.
What did you add to her food?

It's not easy to write a story and post it on nairaland and you are doing a good work, kudos

But you need to make your updates long since it's not regular, I think that's what we make people stick and interested to your story
Thanks. I am still using a phone so its more difficult to gauge how long or otherwise it is. However I will try and work on it.

No.
So you not know that she had been kidnapped?
I know about her kidn.......
So you know something about her pregnancy and disappearance. So tell this court what you know about Loveth's case.
I know that she was kidnapped while she was pregnant.
Pregnant with your child?
That was what I was told.
What you were told? Couldn't you confirm?
I never had the chance to see her when I heard about it.
So you have not seen her.
Yes.
Do you have any sexual relations with her?
No.
Then explain to me why her father thinks that you are her lover?
I used to teach Loveth some subjects and we are a bit close.
Are you sure that is all?
Yes.
The lawyer then moved to the Television set in the court, which was brought in that morning and switched it on.
So explain what is happening here?

It was cordial.
How cordial was it? Did she treat all of you fairly?
No. Adaobi was her favourite.
Who is Adaobi?
Thats my younger sister.
OK. So tell me, why did you leave the house and her business for a school and a poorer accommodation?
I did that so that I will be independent.
Really?
Yes.
That means that she was controlling you?
No sir.
Then it means that she was controlling and bossy.
No.
So you left because of independence.
Yes.
So why did you come back the day before the murder?
I had come in there some days ago.
Really?
Yes.
For what purpose?
I had run out of cash.
Funny you mention that after declaring that you moved out because of your independence.
I told you that.........
What did you know about Loveth's pregnancy and her subsequent disappearance?

Calistus woke up suddenly. It was two days since Mr Mogu almost got himself into the EFCC's net, moreover, it was the second sitting as regards Ebuka's case. He sat up and thought about his elder brother.
He never truly hated Ebuka, he just had an intense dislike of him. This was in no small part due to his mother's overwhelming preference for his elder brother. Even when his brother abandoned the family's business in order to teach, she congratulated him, much to the disdain of Calistus who saw his plan to start his own business destroyed by his mother two years prior to Ebuka's move. The last straw was obviously the will. He could stand anything the Mum threw at him if his stake in the properties she had was the highest. Rather, it was Ebuka who had the highest stake.
That was so unforgivable.

Now that she is dead, he can eliminate the last obstacle to his aim - his brother.
Coming out of his room, he noticed Adaobi pacing around the living room with impatience. He pitied her, the poor thing trying to avert the inevitable. If only.....
Calistus, please be fast. I don't want to be late for the court case.
Is it you wedding?
Its not funny, Calistus. We can't......
Relax, sister. We will get there on time.
Quickly, they rushed out of the house, issuing orders to their house helps while they entered the car and zoomed off.

The court was looking more gloomy than the first time Ebuka was brought to court. The judge on seat was a different one, who carried a particular stern face.
Where is the other judge? Ada asked Calistus.
I heard that he was murdered two days ago. Assassination.
Chai! And I had a good feeling about that one.
Ada, please be......
The prosecution lawyer, who had just been motioned to start the proceeding, stood up.
Mr Ebuka, what is your relationship with your mother?
