It appears most capital cities in south east are expanding to new frontiers and areas. Imo state have New Owerri which is developed, Enugu have Independence Layout which is developed, Abia State have Ogurube Layout which is developing same with Anambra Greenwood City and Ebonyi Ochudo City. Some states like Imo and Enugu states have even gone further by moving to what i call the "second phase" of expanding their capital cities by commencing the building of 10,000 hectares Imo Chelsea Industrial / Free-trade zone layout in Ngor Okpala which is a new city to be built from the thick hinterland of Ngor Okpala close to the Sam Mbakwe International Airport starting with a 1st phase of 2000 hectares and 1000 hectares Enugu Golf Centenary City. Ala Igbo is expanding at a fast rate and the rate would increase after 2015 elections. |

NCDMB to spend U.S. $100 Million on oil and gas parks Posted by: Editor in Local Content 0 Ernest-NwapaThe Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) is to expend over $100m on its proposed Nigerian Oil and Gas Parks Scheme under which industrial parks will be constructed to boost the country’s oil and gas industry. Executive Secretary of the Board, Ernest Nwapa, disclosed this at the weekend during the close-out ceremony of the Nigerian Oil and Gas Parks Scheme Trainee Programme held at the Aridolf Hotel,Yenagoa. “In terms of cost for each of the parks, we will start from $10m for the phase one to any number up to $50m to $100m depending on the focus of each park,” he said. About 43 successful trainees drawn from different parts of the country were presented with certificates of participation at the event which had the training consultancy firms in attendance, among other stakeholders. Four of the industrial parks have been sited in Bayelsa, Imo, Akwa Ibom, and Rivers States in the first phase of the scheme. Nwapa said the park would cover manufacturing, services, innovation, research and development and other social activities that communities where oil and gas activities had been going on over the years would benefit from. “The scheme is specifically for industrial activities and for us to succeed, we have to build it in such a way that it will be accessible to common rural dwellers. “That is the distinction between this park and the other parks that are all over the place”, he said. “We will structure it in such a way that it will grow organically so that in a period of 10 years it will come to maturity,” Nwapa added. He stated that the NCDMB was best placed to provide the design for the scheme, stressing that it fits into the industrial, oil and gas policy of the transformation agenda of President Goodluck Jonathan. According to him, the board has a budget approval of $10m for each of the parks from the Nigerian Content Development Fund (NCDF). http://energymixreport.com/ncdmb-spend-u-s-100-million-oil-gas-parks/ |
Jonathan’s Local Content Policy Through $150m Oil And Gas Parks By Osa Okhomina — Sep 15, 2014 | Leave a comment Unlike other policies in the oil and gas sector of the economy, the implementation of the Nigerian local content policy of President Goodluck Jonathan is setting new pace in the creation of local players and economic activities, including the proposed $150 million oil and gas industrial parks. The proposed park, with the capacity to create oil and gas manufacturing companies in the chosen states of the Niger Delta region, is set to kick-start its first phase, with $10 million in terms of training of about 47 youths and zonal coordinators from the zone and the setting up of a self-growing organic system for businesses and investments. Unveiling the newly trained-youths at the Aridolf Hotels and Events Centre, Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, the director of Finance and Personnel Management of the Nigerian Content, Monitoring and Development Board (NCMDB), Engr. Ita Anyone, said the 47 youths selected and trained by the board are expected to participate in the proposed increase in local capacity building and utilization of local facilities. In the unveiled plan for the proposed oil and gas industrial parks, the facilities will be located in three zones including Akwa Ibom/Cross River zone located along the Calabar industrial layout, the Imo/Abia zone located at Oguta community with 25 hectares of land provided for the project. Also to be served by their oil and gas industrial parks are the Bayelsa/Rivers zone sited in Otuoke community of Ogbia local government area, while another will be located in Ilaje Community of Ondo State. According to the proposed financing of the project, the Federal Government is expected to enter into partnership with oil multinationals and banks, as the first phase is expected to gulp the sum of $10 million depending on the park’s nature of operations and environment. The project duration is fixed at 10 years with its structures becoming organic that will grow by itself and operators in the park. While the representative of the Bayelsa State commissioner for Trade and Investment, Mr. David Agonobi, commended the management of the NCMDB of the initiative, the representative of the oil producers trade section (OPTS) of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), Engr.Sola Ogunsakin described the proposed oil and gas industrial park as a new dawn for the economy of the Niger Delta region. The OPTS, which is a sub-group within the LCCI and made up of both local and foreign-owned companies registered in Nigeria and hold an Oil Prospecting License or an Oil Mining License, predicted that the proposed park will be a success in the region. The sub-group, which currently has 18 member-companies made up of the Chevron, ConocoPhillips, Dubri, Addax, Nigeria Agip Oil Company (NAOC), Pan Ocean, Shell, Total, Seplat, Neconde, Nexen, Moni Pulo, Statoil, ExxonMobil, Petrobras, Afren, Sapetro and Oando, declared support for the project. According to Ogunsakin, “Though the setting up of the park and its operation may not be easy, it will be a thing of success at the end. It will motivate huge domestic and industrial activity and attract huge employment opportunities.” Earlier in his speech, the executive secretary of the NCMDB, Engr. Ernest Nwapa, explained that the concept of an oil and gas industrial park in the Niger Delta region is part of the vision of the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan to take the region away from its present state into a new economic boom. Nwapa said, “The proposed oil and gas industrial park is not just about buildings. The project will develop a new direction and create more businesses in the region. The park will generate small and large businesses. It will also provide opportunity for research and development. We have mapped out the project not to become another white elephant projects.” A check through the past achievements of the local content policy of the Jonathan-led administration, under the watch of the NCMDB showed that it has ensured the escalation of the historic use of made-in-Nigeria pipelines by Exxon Mobil recently at its Edop-Idoho Offshore field, secured the placement of over 100 kilometres of pipelines orders in Nigeria’s only pipe manufacturing company, SCC Abuja. Continuing, the NCMDB boss said, “It has ensured the increase of in-country fabrication tonnage from 1,000,000 in 2009 to 1,200,000 currently, advanced talks with Jiangsu Yulong of China to establish 250,000 tons per annum LSAW pipe mill in Nigeria, initiated the establishment of deep water port in a major upcoming project, developed the Nigerian oil and gas employment and training strategy, which has resulted in the absorption of over 5000 engineers, geologists, welders and other skill sets into the industry and formed the basis of a national skill database. “The Nigerian Content activities have already generated over 30,000 direct and indirect jobs and will surpass 300,000 within the next four years. NCMDB has designed and launched the Nigerian Content Joint Qualification Standards, an electronic platform for the Board’s implementation of the NOGIC Act, especially its capacity Building & Monitoring functions. “It has led to the establishment of the Nigerian Content Development Fund, to be used for investment in Oil & Gas infrastructure, provide partial guarantee for service providers, manufacturers. NCDMB developed Indigenous Marine Vessel and Offshore Assets Acquisition Strategy to promote utilization of marine vessels and offshore rigs/equipment with genuine Nigerian ownership in all O&G operations to increase the participation of Nigerians, empower communities, and maximize Nigerian crew. “The NCDMB has developed an Original Equipment and Local Component Manufacturing Strategy to promote utilization of materials of Nigerian origin in oil and gas industry and ensure the establishment of equipment manufacturing plants that will employ thousands.” http://leadership.ng/news/384072/jonathans-local-content-policy-150m-oil-gas-parks |

Senator Araraume writes on sustainable Infrastructure in Imo State. by ADMIN on Sep 11, 2014 • 11:24 AM 60 Comments araraume crestYou can agree with me that what our founding fathers in the likes of Dr Michael Okpara of the blessed memory put in place in terms of sustainable infrastructure have been bastardized by succeeding administrations in Imo state. What our dynamic and visionary Dee Sam Onunaka Mbakwe (Ph.D.) instituted have been systematically destroyed by those who felt and still feel that development is another kalou kalou business, were okwe rie okwe. What a chief executive of any state will ask himself or be burdened about for is what Legacy do I leave behind after staying in an executive office as a Governor for 4 years or for an 8 year tenure. What impact does my work have on the governed? Have you noticed the positive public image the Concorde hotel built by Dee Sam Mbakwe Administration have done to Imo state since its existence for close to 40 years now. Have you thought of the quality job done?. What is the essence of using the little resources Imo has to relocate Imo state university to a village for an ego-trip and for personal interest instead of relocating the university to an already eye marked site at Aboh Mbaise/Ngor Okpala Axis by Dee Sam Mbakwe. Now the sited university at the said village has discontinued due to loud cries of the Imo populace. What do we hope of having an international conference center on the site eye marked for Imo Hotels? Of what economic importance to Imo is the international conference centre? Is it not an attempt to showcase emptiness? How many events centers are in Owerri Imo state Capital? There are; the Ikenegbu event centre, Dan anyiam stadium, Sam Mbakwe Banquet Hall, Ahiajoku centre, Ojukwu centre, Heroes square, bongo square, plus close to 500 Hotels, banquet Halls, plus the Oguta Motels that are in ruins. These are by the way. When I talk of provision of infrastructure,I do mean a sustainable one that will stand the test of time. It is the type of infrastructure that will attract income to the Government and to help sustain a fragile economy..Come to admire the State of the arts university teaching hospital built by Chief Achike Udenwa(Onwa) regime in Orlu and state secretariat. Have you seen the state of these edifices? Have you given a thought on the numerousity of fly overs and pedestrian crossings in owerri which are of no usage and of no immediate economic need of the populace? Have you seen the abandoned city gates that do not add any value to the well-being of the Imo people? Are you aware of the harvest of roundabouts all over the state? Are you aware that the only Imo Library at the beck and call of Imo people have been wickedly demolished and bulldozed. Dear friends, you will witness under my administration a reappraisal of all existing structures to strengthen all the economic viable ones and do away with those that are of burden to our economy. My administration will reverse a lot of wrongs done. The Imo Library must take its rightful place, if not giving u a Digital Library. Currently the Concorde Hotel is under lock and key, simply to create room for private Hotels to flourish. None of them have thought of an Airport Hotel that will give our visitors hope and immediate accommodation once they arrive in Imo state. Imo Hotels, Oguta Motels all will come on stream. There is going to be no room for bill boards of fathom structures not seen. That is pure deceit. Government will be able to engage world class road makers to give Imo the best. Imo is lagging behind; Imo has lagged behind for decades. Imo will be back on stream and if Imo is given bursary to all her students, it will go to all her citizens studying in all the Nigerian universities. When we come to the bridge we shall know how to cross it with the state legislature. Infrastructure wise, Imo is far behind now. Where is our Regional water scheme? - See more at: http://www.imostateblog.com/2014/09/11/senator-araraume-writes-on-sustainable-infrastructure-in-imo-state/#sthash.gMcAMXIp.dpuf |
kernel504: I didn't want to comment on this thread before now, but after reading through your post l was forced to reply you.EBONYI STATE HAVE CRUDE OIL AND GAS. ALL IGBOLAND FROM ABIA TO ENUGU, FROM IMO TO ANAMBRA TO EBONYI, FROM DELTA IGBO TO RIVERS IGBO HAVE CRUDE OIL AND GAS. BELOW IS THE EVIDENCE OF CRUDE OIL IN EBONYI STATE THAT NEEDS FURTHER EXPLORATION AND PRODUCTION FG investigates discovery of crude oil in Ebonyi By Felix Uka, Correspondent, Abakaliki A Federal Government team from Ministry of Mines and Steel Development has visited Afikpo South Local Government Area of Ebonyi State to investigate discovery of crude oil in the area. The preliminary report has already been taken to Abuja for confirmation of its findings. State Commissioner for Cement Production and Mineral Development, Sunday Ugwuocha, who revealed this, noted that in a bid to shore up the internally generated revenue of the state, the state government, in conjunction with the Federal Government team, visited the potential crude oil site dug in 1928 for further investigation. Ugwuocha, who stated this on Monday during an interactive session with stakeholders from Inyiba community in Ishielu Local Government Area of the state where the state is presently carrying out core drilling of limestone, said the preliminary result of the investigation has been submitted to the Federal Government. According to the commissioner, “geologists from the Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel Development were in the state recently to carry out preliminary investigations on the oil well that was dug in Edda community in 1928, the state government was still waiting for the outcome of the ministries’ investigations. “The investigation if positive will place Ebonyi as one of the oil producing states in the country. “This development has been there since 1928, Eddah people has been making presentation to the Federal Government to come and investigate the well dug but we are happy that today a team from the Federal Government has finally come and we believe that something meaningful will come out of there investigation”. The commissioner, who warned the people of Inyiba not to allow themselves to be used by some selfish individuals in the area to forment trouble that will delay the core drilling process going on in the area, pointed out that compensation will soon be paid to deserving members of the community after evaluation process by the state Ministry of Land and survey. “Government will not sit back and watch you being bought over to subvert government development activities. “The state has commenced investigation and exploration to unravel the quantity of crude oil in Afikpo South and coal in Afikpo North”, he said. Responding, a member of the community, Theophilus Nwanga, commended the transparency of the government in the industrialisation process, adding that the cement project will lead to creation of jobs for the teeming youths in the area and the state in general, even as he assured of the safety of the explorers and their equipments. http://dailyindependentnig.com/2012/12/fg-investigates-discovery-of-crude-oil-in-ebonyi/ Ebonyi State eager to join league of oil producing states Jan 02, 2001 01:00 AM Desirous of joining the prestigious league of oil producing states and to enjoy the juicy 13 % derivation, the Nigerian Ebonyi State government is pushing for the Federal Government and the NNPC verification of historical evidence of the presence of crude oil and bitumen deposits in the state. Specifically, the state said there is historical evidence of seismic and exploratory activities which have shown that crude oil was discovered in Afikpo South Local Government then under Ogoja province during the colonial rule in Nigeria. The state Commissioner for Information, Mr. John Otu said verification of the claim is very imperative now that the state created in 1996 is craving for economic development. One of the evidence was contained in a letter signed by Mr. L.M. Henderson Scott, Principal Mineral Resources department in the colonial days reference 523/51 and dated October 26, 1928 in which it was confirmed that crude oil sample free from sediment and water was discovered in the area believed to be around Afikpo in the Southern part of Nigeria. Also, the report of laboratory tests carried out by Imperial Institute London as well as the one reference Imperial Institute report No. 3417 dated July 1928 gave the quality of crude oil to include, low boiling, volatile hydrocarbons with high flash-point. The report, which was obtained from the National Archives, Otu said was evident enough that the Federal Government as a matter of urgency should direct the state-run NNPC through its Frontier Exploration Service (FES) to commence both seismic and exploratory drilling to confirm the aforementioned claim. The commissioner stated that Ebonyi State would have done it but since such resources are invested in the hands of the Federal Government by law, it becomes necessary for them to verify this, and allow private oil prospecting companies to start exploring the resources for the benefit of the state and the country as a whole. According to him, a lot of work and resources have been committedin Chad basin where there was no any historical evidence of such deposit, pointing out further that it is very necessary for the Federal Government to open the gate in Ebonyi State. Apart from crude oil, Otu said the state ranked first among the states blessed with abundant deposits of bitumen as well as salt in Uburu village of the state. According to him, the state government had already presented a special report on the issue of crude oil discovery to President Olusegun Obasanjo while efforts are also being made to reach out to other petroleum industry agencies such as NNPC, Department of the Petroleum Resources (DPR) and the Ministry of Petroleum Resources. Otu also stated that the senate committee on solid minerals has visited the bitumen deposit sites in the state which contained high quality alluvial deposit which makes the state a potential oil and bitumen territory. The state Information Commissioner stated that if the Federal Government acted fast on its request, then the state government through its economic development strategy will woo foreign investors for the purpose of exploiting these resources. "Ebonyi State is very much eager to develop all the resources in its land and that is why we want the Federal Government to verify this claim, so that foreign investors can develop the resources," Otu stated. The state, according to geologists, is located within Enugu basin, where the concessions are said to have been awarded to some multinational oil companies. It was also discovered that in some of the wells drilled so far, indications of hydrocarbon reserves have been proved but it is not clear where the fields have not been developed. A geophysicist with a French oil giant, said, there is history of gas discovery in the area but cost of laying pipeline facilities to harness this resources has pushed the operators away. The industry operator also explained that at the time this discovery was made, government has not given greater attention to gas development as it is in the country today. http://www.gasandoil.com/news/2001/01/nta10404 |

54th Annual Conference of the NBA ends in Owerri in grand style Governor Okorocha (extreme left) and Gowon (extreme right) at the NBA conference in Owerri The 54th Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association which began on Monday 25th August in Owerri the Imo State capital comes to an end today with over 5,000 legal practitioners in attendance. The conference theme which is targeted at x-raying the political history and development of Nigeria, Constitutional reforms, Economic development, Educational development, Infrastructural issues and Judicial reform also witnessed new Innovations in Information Technology (IT) which will enable lawyers surf through the web and research on legal matters. Speaking at the opening ceremony of the conference held at the newly built Imo International Conference Center (IICC), a former Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon lauded the theme of NBA’s Conference which was, “Nigeria, A Hundred Years After,” and observed that “Nigeria is not yet 100 as an independent nation.” He admitted that the nation was yet to achieve its potential as a sovereign country and challenged participants at the conference to discuss how to make Nigeria greater in the next 100 years. Earlier, the Imo State Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha said the nation could not grow until those with vision and passion for development were allowed to assume leadership positions. He challenged lawyers to provide direction for the country as people with great training. President Goodluck Jonathan, who was represented on the occasion by the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Mohammed Adoke (SAN) also explained the decision of his administration to negotiate with the family of the former Head of State, General Sani Abacha, over money looted by the late maximum ruler. Adoke said the Federal Government’s option of negotiation for the recovery of Abacha loot was not only transparent, but had also become a standard for the world to adopt. Also speaking, The Speaker of House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal asked lawyers to lead efforts to save the nation, saying poverty had worsened across the country. He alleged that Nigerians were yet to be given the opportunity to freely choose their leaders, insisting that elections so far conducted under the current civilian government had not been different from the style adopted by the military. He called for credible elections as the solution to Nigeria’s problem. The occasion was used by the outgoing NBA President, Okey Wali (SAN) to render the account of his two-year stewardship, saying his administration had been able to advance the goals of the body. Wali listed his administration’s achievements to include infrastructure development and fighting for justice for Nigerians. Okey Wali said “the NBA annual general conference continues to be the premier and veritable opportunity for lawyers from around the world to meet and hear firsthand about current trends and legal developments in various areas of practice.” Speaking on the issue of Ebola virus, the NBA said its branch in Owerri has secured the collaboration and services of Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Imo State Chapter to provide ambulances and other medical equipment and personnel, education and enlightenment of members. Example is to avoid shaking of hands and physical body contact. It also stated that it would partner with FAAN and Aviation Ministry for Airport screening on landing and surveillance at the Airports. The statement by Wali reads in part. “We urge our members to please maintain higher standard of hygiene. Note that Imo state is not one of the states that have been flagged as location where potential victims have been sited. Please further note that all the conference participants do not gather at the same venue at the same time. They are usually spread out in different sessions going on simultaneously. Also present at the occasion were the Delta State Governor, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan, Augustine Alegeh (SAN) who was elected on Tuesday July 15, 2014 as the 27th President of the Nigerian Bar Association and a host of others. |
Thoughts on the 2014 NBA AGC 02 Sep 2014 Legal Eagle By May Agbamuche-Mbu, Email: may.mbu@thisdaylive.com The Nigerian Bar Association’s 54th Annual General Conference 2014 held in Owerri has finally come and gone after all the song and dance regarding the Ebola virus disease and whether the conference should hold or not. It is said that thousands of lawyers converged in Owerri, though the exact figures are somewhat debatable. However, what matters most is that the conference held and had in attendance the Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal who himself is a lawyer, his deputy Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, the Governors of Imo and Delta States, Rochas Okorocha and Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, the Attorney General of the Federation Mohammed Bello Adoke SAN, Justice John Fabiyi who represented the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Cletus Nweze of the Supreme Court, General Yakubu Gowon, former NBA Presidents and Senior Advocates of Nigeria among a host of lawyers from the four corners of the country. Whichever way you slice it Okey Wali SAN ended his two year tenure courageously and with deep faith in his belief that the conference must go on Ebola virus or no. He was steadfastly confident that all precautions would be taken, with the help of the Imo State government and that all hands would be on deck and thankfully the conference went ahead without any casualties. Even at the opening ceremony itself Mrs. Olubunmi Eyitayo of the Federal Ministry of Health (Centre for Disease Control of Nigeria) gave a most informative health talk on Ebola. At the end of it all a lot of serious work was put into organising a conference of this magnitude with months of painstaking meetings, speakers all geared up to give of their best, with countless arrangements and hours clocked up in preparation. Would not the organisers have wanted full scale attendance at the sessions and events? Going by the robust programme on offer the topics were not only relevant but they also had excellent speakers lined up to participate. Although not one to cry over spilled milk, I am still trying to figure out and understand the rationale as to why this conference was not postponed. Mr. Augustine Alegeh SAN who has now taken over the presidency of the NBA has his work well and truly cut out, starting with the NBA Constitution. Just as we lawyers go on about the amendment of the 1999 Constitution, let us equally look inwards and first clean out our own Augean stables, then we can successfully hold our heads high and speak authoritatively on national issues. At the moment we as an association are a laughing stock and this must end, by all means and as soon as possible. The theme ‘Nigeria A 100 Years After’ was well thought out. I particularly found a statement by Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal in his remaks rather appropriate where he opined that ‘lest we forget, let me remind us that I am part of government and when I speak out on these governance failings I neither suggest that it started today nor that I am excluded wholly from blame, perhaps in house we can apportion blame amongst us. I am however strongly persuaded that the greatest disservice that man can do to himself and society is to indulge in self-deceit. If I see magnificent economic growth indices and after traversing our rural communities what I see is worsening poverty, I should have the courage to tell myself the truth no matter how bitter’. He could not have said it better. It is just that we are a nation of people who live in hope of a better tomorrow. As is the norm with legal conferences of this nature the plenary sessions are a must and are not to be missed. This year the topics were not just important but also significant. The first plenary was titled ‘Nigeria: Any hope for An Industrial Revolution?’ and the second, ‘Appointment, Remuneration and Discipline of Judges: the Constitutional Role of the National Judicial Council and the Judicial Service Commission’. Every sector of the legal profession had their session namely, Sections of Business Law and Legal Practice, Human Rights Institute and Judges, British Nigeria Law, NBA Lawyers in the Legislature, Military Law, Corporate Counsel, Academics, Women and also the Young Lawyers Forums, Lawyers in the Media and Law Officers all competed to give oftheir very best to this conference with the challenging topics selected and all sessions chaired by distinguished legal luminaries and speakers of outstanding competence. The Section on Business Law session had a topic ‘Providing Affordable Housing in Nigeria: Bridging the Funding Gap’ which was presented by the lead speaker Mr. Roland Igbinoba. He analysed the Nigerian housing market where more than 80% live in rented apartments compared to South Africa where only 19% do and Ghana at 22%.He recommended bringing mortgages down market (and making houses cheaper), growing and developing housing micro finance and pursuing policy interventions all along the value chain. Another session that stood out was that of the Law Officers with the topic ‘Prosecuting Terrorism and Crimes Against Humanity, Nigeria v Rest of the World’, chaired by R.A. Lawal Rabana SAN with speakers including the Attorney General of the Federation in this instance represented by Labaran Shuaibu Magaji, Mr. Charles Adeogun-Phillips of the International Criminal Court and Ahmed Raji SAN. In this session we were made to understand that Nigeria has attempted to reform in line with the Global Terrorism Convention and thus the power to prosecute terrorism which was originally given to the President is now conferred on the Attorney General. Furthermore, terrorism cases are being fast tracked but the challenge, not surprisingly, is the absence of counsel to defend terrorism suspects as no one wants to be so stigmatized. Mr. Adeogun- Phillips in his own presentation stated that ‘on the 21st of November 2001, Nigeria ratified the ICC treaty and the implication of this is that Nigeria becomes a member of the International Court. One valid provision in the International Criminal Court (ICC) statute is that it operates in conjunction with the domestic laws we have and is not a substitution thereof. Accordingly, there has to be proof that Nigeria has actually investigated the act and failed before the international law can be upheld. The proper procedure is to domesticate the international law into our own laws so we can be able to prosecute these crimes. It is suggested that every member of the treaty should be given the opportunity to prosecute these crimes first and then if it fails to do so, the international court can thereafter intervene. This is what he referred to as the ‘do it yourself’ approach and that we need certain mechanisms in place to do this. The Annual General meeting itself provided for the presentation of reports by various legal bodies such as the Council of Legal Education, Corporate Affairs Commission, Legal Aid Council, National Human Rights Commission, Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies and the Law Reform Commission. Of particular interest was the report by the Council of Legal Education (CLE) which stated that Professional Ethics has been reintroduced as a separate and distinct course with the establishment of a substantive professional ethics and skills department in all campuses. One of the challenges faced by the CLE is the violation of admission quota by universities which has stretched their human and infrastructural facilities over the years and this is oftentimes done with impunity. In a bid to foster continuous legal education, the CLE is forging a partnership with Ethics and Advocacy Africa, a US based non-profit organisation whose mission is to assist in building the capacity of qualified lawyers for better service delivery. The Council has also concentrated on renewal and completion of ongoing projects such as the completion of the abandoned students’ hostel and repair of the Sir Adetokunbo Ademola Hall in Lagos, completion of the students’ hostel in Enugu campus, completion of the hostel and staff accommodation in Kano and so on and so forth. In view of the inadequate funding by the government, the Nigerian Law School (NLS) which comes under the auspices of the CLE and has decided to seek ways to get support and donations from its alumni, and also open an alumni development office. When all is said and done, what comes next with all these worthy recommendations, reports and communiques? The Government of the day need not look any further: the NBA should be on hand to help this country reach its heights if - and only if – it has willing collaborators. http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/thoughts-on-the-2014-nba-agc/187927/ |

NBC to fast track demarcation of Ebonyi /Cross River boundary Posted on March 17, 2014. The Director-General, National Boundary Commission (NBC), Dr Muhammad Ahmad, has said that the commission will review the boundary between Ebonyi and Cross River to fast track the demarcation process. Ahmad said in Abuja at the weekend that the commission would dialogue with the states so as to fast track the demarcation process. He recalled that in 2013 the commission organised a stakeholders meeting with the states on the need to dialogue. He said that three levels of peace committee were reconstituted to restore peace in the disputed areas as a prelude for the resolution of the boundary. According to him, after the meeting, violence erupted around a sector of the boundary, which hindered progress toward defining the boundary. “Efforts are currently being made by the commission to implore the affected local government areas and communities to allow for a peaceful atmosphere to enable resumption of work on the boundary,” he said. Ahmad said that the commission`s technical committee met with the Anambra and Kogi officials in 2013 to resolve the boundary disputes. He said that a joint field team was constituted to begin the tracing and provisional demarcation of the boundary. He said that the team had traced about 75 per cent of the boundary before it was stalled because access to the river Anambra was blocked by water hyacinth. This is as at 2013. “However, the team will resume work on the remaining sector soon and upon the receipt of the joint field team’s report, a stakeholder’s meeting will be convened to discuss the report and the way forward.” Ahmad said that the commission held a joint meeting in Yenegoa with representatives from Bayelsa and Rivers on how to resolve boundary disputes. “The technical experts of the states and the Federal Government identified measures to be taken to move the resolution process forward. “But Rivers state announced its withdrawal from further deliberations in any joint delimitation and demarcation exercise in respect of the boundary until certain demands were met,” he said. Ahmad said that the sudden action by the state stalled further actions on the boundary. He said that Enugu and Benue states have expressed their readiness to begin field work. According to him, the field visit will be undertaken as soon as the Office of the Surveyor-General of the Federation is ready. http://www.hallmarknews.com/nbc-to-fast-track-demarcation-of-ebon%E2%80%8Byi-cross-river-boundary/ It is Clear that the Oil Wells Belongs to Anambra State - Gov Obiano Awka Chamber of Commerce Governor Willie Obiano has disclosed that the government of Anambra state will encourage Orient Petroleum to build its refinery in the state within nine months, even as the company had equally received a licence for cargo Airport at Umueri where it intended to also use as a dump site for ATK used for flying planes so that international flights would procure their supply nearby. The Governor said that a six lane road linking the airports to other parts of the state will be constructed. He spoke when a delegation from Awka Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture paid him a courtesy call recently at the government house Awka, where he also revealed that when Orient Petroleum is completed, it would produce an initial capacity of twenty thousand barrels of oil per day which would attract oil and gas industries to the state. The Governor also said that the government will also take steps to enroll the state into the membership of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), even as the boundary adjustment with Kogi State is almost completed which has made it clear that the oil wells were in Anambra State. He affirmed that the state would soon approach the National Assembly for necessary legal framework to enable the state enjoy the benefits of being an oil producing state. Earlier, the state president of the Chamber, Chief Ndubuisi Nwobu explained that the chamber came to inform the governor of the coming sixth Awka Made in Nigeria Trade fair which is aimed at promoting local goods http://orientnewspaper.com/i-have-the-will-zeal-and-determination-to-rid-anambra-of-criminals-chief-willie-obiano/ IT IS CLEAR TO ALL THAT THE DISPUTED OIL WELLS BELONGS TO ANAMBRA STATE. THERE IS SOMEWHERE I READ THE DEPUTY GOVERNOR OF KOGI SAYING THEY ARE NOT INTERESTED IN THE OIL WELLS BUT IN THEIR LAND. THIS WAS AFTER THEY HAVE TRACED 75% OF THE BOUNDARY BEYOND THE LOCATION OF THE DISPUTED OIL WELLS |
Chinese firm to manufacture electrical appliances in Aba By Abel Orukpe - Lagos Chairman of Slok Group, Dr. Orji Kalu, said the organisation has reached a deal with Toro, a company based in China to manufacture refrigerators, air conditioners and other electrical appliances in Aba, Abia State. He made this known while speaking to journalists at the international wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA), Lagos, shortly on arrival from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) at the weekend. Kalu also said that Slok in collaboration with Toro Company will establish aluminum manufacturing factory in the Eastern part of the country to provide jobs for Nigerians, adding that hopefully by April, the company will start operations. The Slok boss stated that he wants to build Small and Medium Scale Enterprises, stressing that his intention is to make Aba a manufacturing hub. “What I have decided to do is to continue to build small and medium scale industry. This year, we are going to build a factory in the East, it’s going to start running by April. This is going to be an aluminum manufacturing company and we are hoping that by December or April 2015, the Toro Group handset, fridge, air conditioners, electronic appliances and the others will be manufactured out of Abia State. I want to go back to Aba and make it the manufacturing hub it used to be.” He added by so doing, he would have created jobs for teeming Nigerians, adding that a situation where able Nigerians are seeing begging when they are supposed to be working is not the best. According to him, “We are dedicated to it and we are not going back on it because the Nigerian people need jobs. They don’t need all these grammars and abuses in the papers by the politicians. They need jobs and that is what we should give them. You come to our airports and you will see a lot of people begging for alms, which is not good for the image of the country. These people should be working in the industries and gainfully employed. I feel the pains to the Nigerian people.” On the capacity of Toro Group, he said that the group is a large manufacturing company in China, adding that the same air conditioners produced by a particular company in China are being marketed by World Mart in America. He posited that when these appliances are produced here in Nigeria, the products will be cheaper, adding that apart from covering the entire Africa, the product are going to be world class. On the cost of this project, he said that it has not been worked out, but that it is going to cost millions of dollars, pointing out that consultants were already working to determine the cost of the project. He said, “We are going to approach the African Nexim Bank, they are coming with us; we are going to appraise the African Development Bank (ADB) and also, local banks that wish to participate will come onboard. It’s a fairly deal to do, we need to bring back a sense of entrepreneurship to people of Nigeria.” http://dailyindependentnig.com/2014/01/chinese-firm-to-manufacture-electrical-appliances-in-aba/ |

Greenfield to build new industrial cluster for leather works manufacturers in Aba March 20, 2014 | Filed under: Company News | Author: GODFREY OFURUM Tweet 8 The dream of shoe makers and other leather work manufacturers in Aba, Abia State to produce in a good environment has received a boost, as Greenfield Assets Limited, an Infrastructure development firm, has decided to build a new industrial cluster for the group in the commercial city. The leather works manufacturers, on the aegis of Leather Products Manufacturers Association of Abia State (LEPMAS), comprising of Shoe makers, belt and bag manufacturers, approached Greenfield Assets to build a new cluster for them, a request BusinessDay gathered has been accepted by the developer. Greenfield also announced plans to designate a purpose built block for leather manufacturers at the Aba Mega Mall, currently under construction at Osisioma area of Aba, to promote leather products made in the area. Ugo Umeseaka, managing director, Aba Mega Mall, at a recently held leather manufacturers stakeholders meeting in Aba, reiterated the intention of Greenfield Assets to enhance the acceptance of leather products made in Aba. According to him, the quality of the leather products in Aba is high and so, there is need for the world to come in contact with these products and give it the much needed acceptance. Meanwhile, Ken Anyanwu, secretary, Association of Leather and Allied Industrialists of Nigeria (ALAIN), has observed that shoe industry can generate N640 billion annually if Nigerians patronise locally made products. Anyanwu, in an interview with BusinessDay in Aba, revealed that the Aba shoe cluster produces about 320 million shoes annually and could generate N640 billion worth of business for the manufacturers, if Nigerians buy two pairs of locally made shoes at the cost of N2, 000 for a pair. On how he arrived at the data, Anyanwu said, “We didn’t go into details, but simply put, an average of two pairs of shoes at N2, 000 per pair, would give us N640 billion of business done in the sector. “And if Nigerians hearken to our call and buy two pairs of shoes per annum, I tell you, there would be food on the table of many Nigerians that feed from this sector,” he affirmed. He explained that the data currently used for policy and advocacy in the leather sector are mere estimates, stressing that no accurate and verifiable information on the activities of the sector are available for use. These include finished leather goods needed by Nigeria annually, finished leather produced and exported from Nigeria annually, Nigeria’s finished leather goods production capacity, quantity of products exported from the country and the accurate number of persons engaged in production in the sector. The Aba leather cluster said to be the biggest in West Africa, with about 40,000 people directly engaged in the manufacture of shoes, belts and bags and a production capacity of about one million pairs of shoes per week, produces for local and international markets. http://businessdayonline.com/2014/03/greenfield-to-build-new-industrial-cluster-for-leather-works-manufacturers-in-aba/#.VACFkmMjIdU |
Collynzo16: My statements aren't based on what I read on websites but what I have seen with my 3 eyes. I have meen to many cities including the Ibadan you mentioned (several times) and I still say Aba is the dirtiest in Nigeria.. WHETHER GOATS LIKE YOU ACCEPT IT OR NOT ABA HAVE SOME GOOD AREAS AND MANY OF US HERE ARE SURPRISED BY THE PICTURES WE HAVE SEEN AND WE ARE GRATEFUL TO THE OP FOR SHOWING TO THE WORLD THAT ABA HAVE SOME GOOD AREAS AND IS NOT AS BAD AS WE HAVE THOUGHT. ABA IS NOT THE MOST DIRTY CITY OF NIGERIA. |
Collynzo16: My problem is not the title of the thread or the OP, I was even ''liking'' some of the pictures until I started seeing comments suggesting that the dirty pictures of Aba are fake. There is no dirtier city in Nigeria than Aba.I AM SURPRISED THAT YOU COULD MAKE SUCH A DUM.B AND UNFORTUNATE COMMENT OF ABA. YES SOME PART OF ABA IS DIRTY AND GOV THEODORE ORJI DON'T DESERVE ANY RESPECT AND PRAISE BUT THAT DOESN'T MAKE ABA THE MOST DIRTY CITY IN NIGERIA. NEVER !!! ABA IS FAR NEATER THAN SOME CITIES IN NIGERIA . SOME PEOPLE NEVER KNEW ABA HAVE SOME AREAS THAT ARE BEAUTIFUL BECAUSE OF THE VOLUME OF WRONG INFORMATION AND UNBALANCED REPORTING. WE SHOULD NOT SET OUR HOUSE ON FIRE BECAUSE WE WANT TO KILL A RAT. ABA WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER AND NEATER UNDER GOOD LEADERSHIP. YES WE AGREE !!! BUT TO SAY ABA IS THE MOST DIRTY CITY IN NIGERIA IS A MALICIOUS FALLACY AND LIE THAT SHOULD BE VIEWED AS AN ACT OF WICKEDNESS AND IGNORANCE . BELOW ARE PICTURES OF IBADAN. YET THE PEOPLE OF THAT AREA DON'T BLOW THEIR WORST DIRTY CONDITIONS OUT OF PROPORTION
|
Nice Job Chinasa. We have seen areas that are bad and dirty in Aba but no good areas in other threads. This thread have shown that Aba just like other cities in the World have their good sides and bad sides. THE WORLD SHOULD KNOW THAT ALL OF ABA IS NOT SLUM. Abia State would have been better off if they had a performing and unbiased governor. I wish Abia State well. |
idealsico: The job is being executed by Saipem for Total.I was part of the manpower involved in building this project:Northern Option Pipeline (NOPL) Project. It covers from Rumuji-Ibaa-Isiokpo-Omagwa-Aluu-Igwuruta-Rukpokwu-Eneka-Igbo Etche-Umuebule Etche-Odagwa Etche-Owaza.The pipeline is virtually completed but Above-Ground Installation (AGI) facilities at both Owaza and Rumuji will be completed next year, likely. The Rumuji end will receive gas from O.U.R pipeline while buyers will lay theirs from Owaza node (Abia state) to point of use. Nigeria is Working, let's be patient. It will take a little more time for delpoyment.God bless Nigeria.CAN YOU PREDICT WHAT TIME NEXT YEAR THE PROJECT WOULD BE COMPLETED |
