Roseey0:Bet they will be . |
Roseey0:Lol Rose....you are in. You will do just fine ![]() |
Roseey0:Yea Rose you are very right. The average male weight twice as much as the female. That is the challenge during mating. There are a few things you can do to help matters. For a start, try and cover the claws of the tom. They can really cut deep into the hen. You should also be concerned with the mating time. It's weird but the tom sometimes just climb on the hen and just stay there! No interest in mating at all! That is dangerous and you must get it off. With regards to the separated toms, I will suggest that you sell them off if they are of age. If they are not, let them keep their distance from the other couple as much as possible. Do the turkeys free roam? |
Candling Turkey Eggshttp://turkeyview..com/2015/10/candling-turkey-eggs.html?m=1 |
Roseey0:Hi Rose. That is interesting. However 3 toms and a hen is not such a good combination. I will rather suggest that you take two toms away and they will do just fine. Don't panic on breeding them. Just subscribe to my threads as we go along and you will love the journey |
Got any turkey farmers in the house? Let's share ideas |

samshoz:That is quite an aggressive one. A friend's tom was killed by a dog when the tom attacked the dog. Can you tell me more about your tom? |
This is too funny. Male turkeys are mostly gentle compared to their chicken counterparts. Those guys virtually rape their ladies all the time!http://turkeyview..com/2015/10/strutting-tom-running-hen.html?m=1 |
The incubation period for the turkey is 28 days. Turkeys are pretty good natural incubators meaning they can pretty well take care of their eggs until it hatches. However they are not as good mothers. When it comes to mothering their young, I am tempted to believe that turkeys and guinea fowls are the lamest! Turkey eggs are pretty precious and expensive. Well needless to say the poults are much expensive and precious. Day-old poults are very much a delight to watch. They are quite bigger than chicken at birth. They look fluffy and all but they are also very fragile. They are not as strong like the chicken. A poult can virtually die for no apparent reason at all! After the hatch, most farmers are left with the question of whether to allow the turkey hen take care of the poults or take them away. Taking the poults from the hen is a crucial decision because it can be the difference between having a horrible poult mortality and raising a lovely flock. As a rule, I always take my poults away from the mother. At the start of the hatch, the poults usually hatch out after three days. When the last poult come out, the hen indicates the readiness to move out. At that, time, I take the hen out gently to the 'recovery room'. In that room, I have high energy meal consisting of glucose powder and grains. After two days, the hen seems fine and is allowed back to the flocks. The poults are however taken to the 'nursery'. In the nursery, I have a setup of lamps for heating the area. The poults are immediately fed on mashed nuts. The extra cholesterol is good for them. After a week, they are fed their normal feed. I ensure that the poults also get as much leaves as possible. After about three weeks, the poults are again moved to another area called the growing room where they integrate with the other flock gradually until they become adults. http://turkeyview..com/2015/10/taking-poults-from-hen.html?m=1 |

Lanceslot:You can use the shape of their heads. The hen has got a sharp oval shaped head but the tom has a flat relatively big head. Other than that, nothing much to tell them apart |
Sexing turkeys remain one of the biggest challenges for most turkey owners. It is in fact one of the most researched topics of the bird. Toms, as turkey males are called, shares several similarities with the hen. This can get many people, including some experienced turkey farmers, confused. A friend of mine started with 3 poults about 6 months ago. He was pretty sure that he had both sexes in the lot. As the poults started growing, he started having doubts. He did some consultations and was told all the turkeys were toms. He quickly got 3 more hens to the flock because he wanted to expand. You needed to see him recently when all six turkeys started laying recently! Telling the sex of a turkey is not that easy. Many people have come to believe strutting is the most distinctive difference between a young tom and a young hen. Well that is not exactly true because female turkeys also mimic it. So how can you tell the difference between a young tom and a young hen? Honestly, before the age of 6 months, the difference is very subtle. Everybody can get the guess wrong at a point. However after 6 months, the difference becomes quite clear. That statement though is only true if you have both sexes in your flock. The domestic male turkey is bigger than the hen. The distinctive featherless neck of the tom tells it apart from the hen. The hen only has a featherless head. The male turkey has got a very large snood compared to that of the hen. During strutting, the snood relaxes and cover the beak giving the tom that scary look. Another difference between the matured tom and hen is the wattle which is located under the head. The wattle saps on the chest and clearly tells a male turkey from a female. The female may mimic strutting but it is only the male turkey that can gobble. Gobbling is the distinctive male call to attract females when they strut. The female also make the call which is a sound only distinctive to the female. At the center of the male turkey's chest, the creature has the beard. Well it is not a beard as we know it but this is a cluster of feathers that looks quite like hair. They are however just modified feathers. The female does not have that. http://turkeyview..com/2015/10/how-to-sex-turkeys.html?m=1 |
Encouraging Turkeys To Lay in Nest Getting turkey hens to lay in the nest sounds easy. In fact I never considered it as an important subject during my early years of raising these wonderful creatures. When I finally realized that my hens are laying, each had laid about 8 eggs by then. I was lucky the foxes did not see the eggs first. Turkeys are very gentle creatures. They are highly intelligent creatures, aspect of the turkey's life which many people get wrong. They are pretty good learners. Ironically, that can be the problem with raising turkeys. They virtually have to be taught EVERYTHING! To get your turkeys to lay at the right place, you first need to teach them how to do it. Getting a nice nest available is no guarantee either. Through my years, I have identified ways to teach the turkeys exactly where to lay the eggs. Get the sex right: This may sound trivial but you will be surprised how many people get this wrong. Sexting turkeys is not a trivial topic. It is covered extensively in the post here. You need to determine that the turkey is a hen. It will start laying between 6 to 9 months depending on the breed. With that done, you are ready to go!Look out for the signs: Laying is the final result of several signs of a matured hen. The signs are discussed in this post. If the hen is positive on all the signs, then it is time to start your own preparation!Location is vital: Like many other birds, turkeys absolutely love their privacy when they are laying eggs. They prefer a bushy area with moderate temperature. In preparing the nest this must be considered. The nest should be away from the general population to give the hen the privacy it needs.Observe the laying time: Turkey hens generally lay every other day when they start laying. They may break once every week from the cycle. Observe the creature and notice the time that it will lay. It is important not to disturb the hen a this stage. With the laying time determined, move the turkey to the prepared nest the next day.Confirm acceptance of nest: It is sometimes possible that the hen may not accept the nest. If this happens, repeat steps 2 to 4. If the hen however lays in the nest then that is it. Congratulations! You just successfully coached your turkey to lay in the nest. http://turkeyview..com/2015/10/encouraging-turkeys-to-lay-in-nest.html?m=1 |
