Thailand's constitution will include the term "third gender" for the first time, a member of a panel drafting a new charter said on Thursday, in a move to empower transgender and gay communities and ensure them fairer legal treatment. Thailand has a large gay community, but remains largely conservative, although homosexual, transgender and transsexual people play key roles in its entertainment industry. Thai law does not recognize same-sex unions, which keeps gay couples from taking joint bank loans and medical insurance, besides barring changes to gender categories on national identity papers. The Constitution Drafting Committee, a group hand-picked by the military to prepare a new constitution after the previous one was scrapped following a May coup, began work this week. Panel spokesman Kamnoon Sittisamarn said the new measure would ensure all sexual identities were protected under the constitution and treated equally by the law. "We are putting the words 'third gender' in the constitution because Thai society has advanced," he told Reuters. "There are not only men and women, we need to protect all sexes. We consider all sexes to be equal." The panel will send details of the measure to the National Reform Council by April. It will need to be formally approved by the ruling junta, also known as the National Council for Peace and Order. In 2012, a group of lawmakers and LGBT activists formed a committee to draft legislation recognizing same-sex couples that would, among other things, enable them to marry. But discussion of the draft law was put on ice while Thailand struggled with political protests in 2013 and 2014. Gay rights activists welcomed the decision to include the term "third gender" in the new constitution. "It would treat all citizens equally and help to protect from discrimination in all areas including ease of doing business and also personal life," said prominent gay activist Natee Teerarojjanapongs. The army seized power on May 22 to restore order after months of political infighting that killed nearly 30 people. It scrapped a 2007 constitution for an interim charter giving the military sweeping powers, and protection for the coupmakers. Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose The Governor of Ekiti State, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, has vowed to work to ensure the victory of President Goodluck Jonathan in the February 14 general elections. Fayose said this in Emure Ekiti at the flag-off of the campaign of the Peoples Democratic Party’s House of Assembly and National Assembly candidates in Ekiti South senatorial district. The governor, who spoke at the palace of Elemure of Emure Ekiti, Oba Emmanuel Adebayo, described Jonathan as a humble person, who never allowed the power of office to affect his attitude. He said, “What I believe in my life is absolute loyalty and that is my own philosophy about politics. It is either I am for you or I am against you. “President Goodluck Jonathan supported me when I was contesting and this is a payback time. We have to support him because it was God that brought him into power. “Apart from the fact that President Jonathan has done his best for Nigeria, presidency is a very powerful position that needed a humble personality like Jonathan to superintend over. So Ekiti must stand up for Jonathan and I want to assure you, he will not forget you.” Fayose appealed to all aggrieved PDP aspirants to forget their grievances and work together for the good of the party. “When I was in opposition, I defeated an incumbent governor in all the 16 local government areas. I know it is going to be an easy ride now that we are in government. By the grace of God and the support of the people, I won’t lose any slot in the state House of Assembly and National Assembly elections,” he boasted Source: http://www.punchng.com/news/fayose-ill-work-for-jonathans-victory/ |
President Goodluck Jonathan says his administration has transformed the railway system, adding that the people of Lagos now enjoy train rides in air-conditioned coaches. The President said this in a Facebook post on Sunday. Jonathan, who described the feat as a ‘silent revolution’ promised that his administration would do more in the coming years. He said, “A silent revolution is taking place in Lagos. Every day, thousands of Lagosians are escaping the hustle and bustle of Lagos traffic by traversing the mainland in the new air condition Diesel Multiple Unit trains. “These trains were introduced by my administration as a fore taste of our plan to develop an inter-city and intra-city high speed train network for Lagos. The Federal Government has already signed a $1.5bn contract for the construction of the Lagos-Ibadan Express Train. “This project, when completed, will make it possible to live in Ibadan and work in Lagos. This is progressing simultaneously with the $12bn Lagos-Calabar coastal rail project. This project is 1,402km long and will link Lagos to Calabar with stops at cities along the route. We have good plans for Lagos, plans that will ensure that Lagos continues to be the centre of excellence and a pride to Nigeria.” http://www.punchng.com/news/lagosians-now-enjoy-air-conditioned-trains-jonathan/ |

In as much as I believe in the project called Nigeria, the foundation is faulty. The amalgamation was a fraud...the major reason we are finding it difficult to live together peacefully. Everybody is suspicion of the other tribe. I guess we shld call for a referendum to determine if we want to continue living together or not. This important issue was avoided @ the national confab. |

The National Coordinator of the Oodua Peoples Congress, Chief Gani Adams, has said the group is not supporting any of the presidential candidates contesting the February 14 election. The OPC leader, who was represented by the Assistant General Secretary of the group, Lasun Ogunfowokan, said this in Ile Ife on Friday at the sideline of a quiz organised by the OPC for students in Osun State. He stated that the group was not supporting President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buahari (retd.) and other contestants. Adams added that his faction of OPC was not partisan and would not support any of the candidates against the others. He said, “We are not partisan. The OPC led by Chief Gani Adams is made up of freedom fighters. We are not supporting any of the presidential candidates. “But we are calling on all our members and other Nigerians to go and collect their permanent voter cards to enable them to participate in the general elections.” He urged the Yoruba people to be united and shun politics of bitterness for development to continue in the region. Speaking earlier at the quiz, he lamented the way some Yoruba were relegating the language to the background, saying this could endanger the existence and usage of the Yoruba culture. According to him, many Yoruba parents do not care if their children fail Yoruba in public examinations while criticising the nonchalant attitude of many Yoruba people to lack of proficiency in the language.
