Two Americans face criminal charges for illegally lobbying on behalf of Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe with the aim of helping lift US government sanctions against the African country, prosecutors said Tuesday.
Prince Asiel Ben Israel, 72, and Greg Turner, 71, are accused of telling Mugabe they would enlist the assistance of public officials who “purportedly had close connections with then President-elect Barack Obama,” prosecutors said in a press release.
The men allegedly arranged for at least five “fact-finding vacations” to Zimbabwe, in which US officials, both federal and state-level, met with Mugabe and others, the prosecutors said.
The case came to the attention of authorities when members of Obama’s transition team alerted the FBI. They had become suspicious after a state legislator called twice hoping to speak with the team about his recent visit to Zimbabwe.
Economic sanctions imposed by president George W. Bush in 2003, and extended every year by Obama, do not prohibit US officials from traveling to Zimbabwe or from meeting with “designated” officials, such as Mugabe and Reserve Bank governor Gideon Gono, to discuss the sanctions.
However, the sanctions do bar US citizens and residents from providing lobbying, public relations and media consultation services to the “designated” nationals.
Ben Israel and Turner are accused of contacting the Mugabe government shortly after Obama’s November 2008 election to offer their services for $3.4 million.
Over the next year, they allegedly got several unnamed state and federal lawmakers — including a Chicago-based member of the US House of Representatives — to write letters expressing their interest or commitment to helping Mugabe and Gono.
They are also accused of arranging for Mugabe to meet with federal and state government officials in New York and attempting to get Gono and other Zimbabwe officials on a list of speakers at a forum hosted by a House member from California.
The two men face up to 20 years in jail and a $1 million fine for violating the sanctions.
Ben Israel appeared in a federal court in Chicago Tuesday and was released on bond. Turner is believed to be living in Israel and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

On Saturday, Mt. Salem voted him out for attending a local Rick Ross concert.
With a vote of 11 to 3, the 14 deacons met at 11pm Saturday night to discuss and come to a conclusion that they did not need his services anymore. Rev. Wills arrived to the church the next day for Sunday morning worship service and notice his parking sign taken down and his name removed from the office door.
The deacons even asked another minister from the community to officiate the service that morning. “We cannot have our leader supporting people of this world who are tearing down the kingdom of God.” said Deacon Miles Langley.
According to Deacon Langley, this is not the first time Rev. Wills has attended a concert while pastoring Mt. Salem. 9 months ago the diaconate board met with Rev. Wills when word was given to them that many youth and young adults spotted the pastor at a Lil Wayne concert.
“We know that many saints will have mixed opinions from our actions, but this is not how we do things here at Mt. Salem. We cannot have a pastor praising the world one minute then praising the Lord the next. Period” said Deacon Langley.


Rick Ross recently made nationwide news when he was dropped from Reebok and other endorsements for lyrics advocating rape towards women. ”Put Molly all in her Champagne/ She ain’t even know it/ I took her home and I enjoyed that/ She ain’t even know it,” he raps on the track.

Hello house, I changed my fuel golf3 fuel pump and I took it for a test drive. Not quite long after that, I was hearing a buzzing sound at the back where the fuel pump is located like a big housefly is gallivanting on a window screen. I had to have them change the fuel pump again and the sound stopped and after another test drive it started again. What could be the issue? I've searched online and I was getting different views on it. Some say its bad, some say its okay and what have you. I want to get advices from the auto guys here before I call the person who fixed it for me. Thanks.
