PoliticsAkeredolu Loses At Supreme Court by Redomi(op): 11:34am On Mar 23, 2018
The Supreme Court has dismissed an appeal by Ondo State Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu for lack of merit.

Akeredolu had, by the appeal, challenged a July 20017 judgment of the Court of Appeal, Abuja, which upheld an order by a Federal High Court in Abuja, granting permission to Olusegun Abraham to serve Akeredolu through substituted means, court documents in relation to the suit he (Abraham) filed.

Abraham’s suit is challenging the outcome of the primary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), which produced Akeredolu as the party’s candidate for the last governorship election in Ondo State.

In a unanimous judgment on Friday morning, a five-man panel of the Supreme Court held that Akeredolu’s appeal was without merit.

Justice John Okoro, in the lead judgment, but read by Justice Ejembi Eko, upheld the earlier decision of the Court of Appeal and awarded N500,000 cost against Akeredolu, in favour of Abraham.

CultureOndo - A People Like No Other by Redomi(op): 7:54am On Mar 22, 2018
ONDO - A PEOPLE LIKE NO OTHER

I have never stopped to wonder about the uniqueness and superiority of the different aspects of Ondo culture - their traditions and customs., their language, music, songs and dance, ceremonies and festivals, costumes, foods and cuisine.

Now I begin to think that the reasons behind this phenomenon may not be unconnected with the history of the founding of the Ondo kingdom and the life of its founder herself.
The unusual early deprivation suffered by the founder of Ondo kingdom, Pupupu with her mother and twin brother having been sent away from the palace to the jungle immediately after their birth must have acted as a catalyst for their future progress and uniqueness.

Oftentimes early undeserved deprivations such as their's attract the mercy and favour of Providence and have the tendency of firing people's ambition to excell against all odds above all others thus bringing out the best out of them.
This can reasonably be explained to be responsible for the Ondo's exceptional mental capacity and pursuit of excellence in every area of their self expression and endeavour.
Eni da ni l'oro f'agbara ko ni.
If you suffer deprivation at an early age you are bound to grow quickly, you learn to do things by yourself, to be different, to stand out of the crowd, think outside the box and find new ways of doing things. You are ever ready to take risks and never afraid of failure. You do your own things your own way and carve a niche for yourself. That's what uniqueness is all about!

Lets now see the uniqueness, the richness and the beauty of some aspects of the Ondo culture in brief.
The Ondo dialect is rich in all its forms: lexicon proverbs, idioms and figures of speech.

Consider for example, the richness of the Ondo vocabulary in this way. . At times an object or a creature or a part of the body may be known by different names, the etymology of which cannot be easily traced to any other existing language.
Examples are:
CUTLASS- ada upekun, manyunan, ijebupeyinda
DOG- aja, lokili, kita, pegun
CAT- logbo, loigennen, musuu
SOLDIER ANTS - ejija ijalo
LEG - ose, egie, etipa

Many Ondo proverbs are full of wit and hilariousness such as:
Okoobo ee b'oman s'itosi
(The substance and evidence of a lie are farfetched)
Asa yo pa liwu o b'eyin aa e je
(Those who destroy their offsprings destroy their own memories)
Epe e mu gwe epe in.
(A desperate disease needs a desperate cure)
Ee gba'i d'epan fo.
(He who receives the bashing suffers the pain)

There are also many beautiful Ondo idioms like
O fe 'a ku
(She is pregnant)
O s'okon-en
(He committed suicide)
O b'aye je o b'o-on se je
(He committed a despicable act)
An-an jo kon'se si sokoto kane
(They are into a serious contention)

Ondo language is similarly rich in figures of speech especially simile and metaphor:
O puo j'abo
(Describing a serial liar)
O le j'ufa
(Describing a drone, a very lazy person)
O d'oko j'aja
(Describing a woman of easy virtue)
O sonon j'eta
{Describing a sadist)
O go j'uso
(Describing an slowpoke)

In the area of costume, the traditional, colourful fabrics, the alaai sanmiyan and petuje are well known for all occasions. The fanciful designs in colourful generous embroidery with the various accouterments will readily make any Ondo man or woman when completely dressed a fashionista anywhere in and outside Yoruba land.

I have just written an article titled The uniqueness and sophistication of Ondo traditional music and dance therefore I will not like to bore my readers with that here.

The list of Ondo foods and cuisine, the delicacies and snacks is just amazing.
Most popular foods with their unique traditional cuisine are iyan with obe ila lasepo popularly known as obelodon or with obe egunsi likotokiti, there is also eba puupuu and amala with same soup or a choice of other types of soup such as obe'fun, obe eepo l'oogun, obe efo at'asese, obe gbanon-non and so on. Other types of foods are pekule, a porridge of maize and beans, amuyale and ifooko , boiled plantain or yam eaten with gbonlokoso {garden egg) stew.
Ondo also have an array of snacks and delicacies the chief of which is the never-say-die ason prepared with specially selected parts of goat meat (ekeegbe) served steaming and hot in all kinds of celebrations.
Other snacks include ojojo, lekute, amuyale, ekuu boiled or roasted corn eaten with walnuts or coconut. As a matter of fact the list is endless and will be difficult to match by any other Yoruba community or any other Nigerian ethnic group for that matter.

The Ondo people have many beautiful traditional festivals such as ogun odunmoko, oamufe, odun oba agheegbe and many others. Only the people who have witnessed these festivals before can appreciate their beauty and various dimensions. .
Ceremonies in Ondo are not too different from those of other Yoruba communities but it is the way they are celebrated that make them tick. They include betrothal and wedding, naming, funeral, title taking, house warming.
All of these celebrations always parade the elegant, colourful Ondo traditional costumes and their variety of music, songs and dance.
Definitely the Ondo people are a class of their own. .

PoliticsWho Signed The 1914 Amalgamation? by Redomi(op): 7:44am On Mar 19, 2018
WHO SIGNED THE 1914 AMALGAMATION?

Nnamdi Azikiwe was born in 1904(was 10years old when the 1914 treaty was signed)

Obafemi Awolowo was born in 1909(was 5years old when the 1914 treaty was signed)
Abubakar Tafawa Balewa was born in 1912(was 2years old before it was signed)

Ahmadu Bello was born in 1910(was 4years old before it was signed)
Michael Okpara was born in 1920(the treaty has been signed 6years before he was born)
Who and who signed these papers on 1914 and called it amalgamation of the Northern Region and Southern Region, that we shall live together as one family without War, Marginalization, Conflict of interest and crisis?
These Nationalists I mentioned above are still sucking breast at the time of this agreement.
You can't mix Red Oil and Palm kernel Oil together to get a good result.

You can't play Jazz and Etigi or skelewu in the club house at the same time and expect a good dance.
Is it that we are learning how to spell Democracy in our country or the teacher does not know how to teach?
Our problems started in 1914 because we don't know who signed it and there names and there intentions for signing it.
If they so called imperialists white signed it in the midnight while we were sleeping, the cock has crown, we have brushed our teeth, and taken our bath. Our eyes have opened to look for the amalgamation treaty and do something about it.

No Northerner can sleep with his eyes closed in the Southern part of Nigeria and no Southerner can do the same in the North. Inter marriage is a Taboo.
After 100years we are still importing toothpicks, going abroad for medical checkup, our lucrative cash crops has gone to moribund, Education for all by the year 2050, Unemployment is a baptismal name for graduates, a police officer cannot boast of his work because of vestige of his salary, our Obasanjo Space Center and Satellite Office at Abuja can not trace the location of Sambisa Forest.

And I repeat it again, who and who signed this treaty?

Politics1966: The Murder Of Brigadier Samuel Ademulegun And His Pregnant Wife by Redomi(op): 6:48am On Mar 08, 2018
One of the greatest & bravest Ondo men that ever lived!

1966: THE MURDER OF BRIGADIER SAMUEL ADEMULEGUN AND HIS PREGNANT WIFE

"Timothy, how did you get in here and what the devil do you think you are doing?" Brigadier Samuel Ademulegun, commanding officer of the 1st Brigade Nigerian Army, Kaduna, asked bewilderedly as he saw Major Timothy Onwuatuegwu and five other soldiers pointing their submachine guns at him and his startled pregnant wife, Latifah.

They had gained access to his bedroom in his house at 1, Kashim Ibrahim Road, Kaduna at approximately 2:05am on that day, January 15, 1966, having passed through with little resistance from his guards commanded by Lance Corporal Lawrence Akuma and three sappers of the Nigerian Army Engineers.

Ademulegun was a "first class soldier" and the second most senior officer after Aguiyi-Ironsi. His army number was N3. As an officer of that magnitude, he was the most protected personality in the whole of Northern Nigeria. Even more protected than the Premier and Governor of the Northern Region. His guards, drawn from the 3rd infantry battalion, guarded not only the inside and outside of his compound but his main house too. But the guards had been compromised and had led Onwuatuegwu straight into the Brigadier's bedroom where he was just in his singlet and knicker.

"Get dressed and come with us sir. Those are my instructions; to bring you to the headquarters," Onwuatuegwu said to the Brigadier. It sounded like nonsense to him. As the commander of that headquarters since 1964, he was the only one who could give such an order. But all the while, his wife Latifah, 8 months pregnant, planted herself fearlessly between her husband and the pointed guns.

In the top bedside drawer was a service pistol. As a Brigadier, Ademulegun knew a pistol was no contest for 6 soldiers armed with submachine guns. But he would rather fight and die gallantly than degrade the honour of his office by surrendering to subordinates.

As he made a quick dash for the drawer, Onwuatuegwu opened fire on the Brigadier, his wife and the unborn child. Ademulegun's children, Kole (13 years) and Solape (6 years) were in the next room. They heard all the clash and were the first to see their lifeless parents surrounded by a pool of blood.

Onwuatuegwu and his mutineers who had turned Ademulegun's children to early orphans, then strolled out unchallenged by the guards to the home of Colonel Ralph Shodeinde, Deputy Commandant of Nigerian Defence Academy whom Ademulegun usually hand over the Brigade to when he was not around. He was also killed in cold blood and his wife shot in the hands and legs.

Brigadier Samuel Adesujo Ademulegun was born, October 23, 1923 in Ondo town, present day Ondo State. The son of Mr and Mrs Michael Ademulegun. He had his early education in Owo also in Ondo State and joined the Nigerian Army as a Private in 1942. He was the third Nigerian commissioned into the Army after Bassey and Aguiyi-Ironsi in 1949. Though his burial place is unknown, there is a cenotaph erected for him in Ondo.

CultureThe Origin Of Ìyàwó by Redomi(op): 8:03am On Feb 18, 2018
The Original Yoruba Word For Wife Is AYA Not Iyawo
Did you know that the original word for wife in Yoruba language is AYA and not IYAWO? The latter is quite commonly used nowadays than the former. I would take you through how Iyawo came about;
WURA, who was at the phase of choosing a spouse was faced with the task of selecting the most suitable one for herself, she was the first child and the daughter of the King of IWO (A Yoruba Town).
Yoruba deities like Sango, Ogun, and other known male deities went to Iwo to seek her hand in marriage. Wura mistreated them.
Wura was very rude and uncouth. She meted the worst behaviour one can think of onto her suitors.
Everyone of them failed to accomplish the prospect of marrying her because they could not withstand her behaviour and they all abandoned their mission on their first day, that was how tough Wura was.
However, when it was Orunmila's turn, before he set for Iwo, he sought wisdom from Olodumare
through Ifa. He was duly informed that no matter the treatment Wura might subject him to, he must not react accordingly. He should have patience and lots of endurance. He was highly warned to expect humiliation from Wura but must not be provoked.
When Orunmila got to Iwo, Wura looked at him scornfully, she did not welcome him, she hissed at him, called Orunmila all sorts of name, she did not even give Orunmila any food or entertained him. Orunmila just ignored her attitudes.
The first day, second day, till about the seventh day. To cap it all, Wura took Orunmila's Opon-Ifa [divination board] and used it as firewood. She took Orunmila's Pouch [Apo Ominijekun] from him. This angered Orunmila greatly but he still conducted himself alright. He refused to react to her behavior having been warned of the consequences of not heeding the advice.
Eventually, the King realised that Orunmila was humble and well behaved. He was amazed that Orunmila did not react or show any sign of anger towards his daughter despite the humiliation. Orunmila's behaviour gave him the assurance that he would take good care of Wura, his daughter if she became his wife.
All along however and unknowingly, Wura's behaviour had been a test for all the prospective suitors. The King finally summoned Orunmila and handed Wura over to him as his wife and he divided his property into two. He gave Orunmila half of it and Orunmila thus became rich and had Wura as his wife.
Upon Orunmila's arrival back home, his people welcomed him enthusiastically for his accomplished task. They asked for some details of his new wife, his answer was direct: Iya-ti-mo-je- ni-Iwo (the result of my indignation at Iwo town). This eight syllable word, "Iya-ti-mo-je- ni-Iwo" became known as Iya-Iwo, and now Iyawo.
Hopefully with this new information I have educated you a bit more about your wife. So if she hisses at you sometimes and is obstinate, just remember Orunmila's humiliation at Iwo before he wins his wife's hand in marriage. ... and keep behaving like Orunmila.
