Down pour which has been described as the heaviest rain so far in the year, yesterday led to the collapse of 50-year-old Abakpa Nike bridge. Neither lives nor property were lost but the collapse of the bridge, strategically located at the entrance of the densely populated Abakpa area caused heavy traffic jam that kept motorists several hours on the road. The rain, which lasted for over two hours did not help matters as it flooded the roads, causing vehicle breakdown and worsening the traffic jam. The road was cut into two just as a young girl trapped during the initial crack that affected only a part of the bridge was rescued by passers-by before the bridge finally collapsed. Enugu State Government intervened immediately by mobilizing a construction company to the site . One of the residents of the area, Felix Onuora attributed the disaster to the heavy downpour, narrating how the bridge collapsed less than 10 minutes after their vehicle crossed the bridge. He explained that one side of the bridge first caved in, trapping a girl who called for help and was rescued. “Approaching vehicles, on seeing what happened, started to reverse, thus, there was no vehicle on the bridge when it finally collapsed.” Mr. John Japanese, a mechanic also narrated how the heavy rain flooded the bridge, reporting that there was lightning and thunder that preceded the collapse of the bridge. “It collapsed immediately the thunder struck and vehicles were on top of the bridge but miraculously, the last of them had crossed before the bridge finally collapsed. John, who had lived in Abakpa for over 30 years praised the state government for the quick intervention but noted that the people living in the area were already in trouble due the collapse. Deputy Chairman, Enugu East Local Government Area, Collins Ekete described what has happened as a big disaster: “I got the news very early this morning and rushed to this place. I thank God there was no casualty. “I commend Governor Sullivan Chime for his quick response it shows he is an action governor. What has happened will affect so many people not only those living in Abakpa, the people in Ugwogo, Ibeagwa and Nike are also affected. “A lot of people will be affected but we urge them to be patient with the government and I am sure that with the quick intervention, people will really have the necessary patience for the repairs to be completed. http://www.sunnewsonline.com/article/traffic-gridlock-50-year-old-abakpa-nike-bridge-collapses . |
Former Head of State and 2011 presidential candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari and former governor of Lagos State and national leader of the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu met again in Kaduna last night. The meeting was in furtherance of alliance talks between the two parties aimed at wrestling power from President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015. National Mirror learnt that the meeting was held at the Sultan Close residence of Buhari in Kaduna where Tinubu led ACN delegation including Governors Ibikunle Amosun and Kayode-Fayemi of Ogun and Ekiti states respectively. Others in the delegation are former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Chief Audu Ogbe and National Publicity secretary of the party, Alhaji Lai Muhammed. Also at the meeting were CPC chieftains including Senator Abu Ibrahim, former Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Minister, Mallam Nasir El-rufai, former Minister of Works, Dr. Hassan Lawal, CPC governorship candidate in the 2011 elections in Kaduna State, Alhaji Haruna Sa’eed and the Minority Leader, Ka-duna State House of As-sembly, Dr. Shehu Usman among others A reliable source at the meeting told National Mirror that the two political leaders mapped out strategies on how to form alliance ahead of the 2015 presidency. They also dis-cussed on state of the nation. The source added that the meeting was in line with the stance of the opposition to commence ear-ly preparation towards the 2015 elections if they are to defeat the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. “As you know, our last experience has shown that late commencement of alliance affected the success among the opposition. This time around two political leaders, Buhari and Tinubu, have agreed to work to-gether to defeat PDP in 2015,” he said. The two leaders have earlier met in Lagos last month for merger talks. Before the 2011 elections the ACN and the CPC failed to seal a merger deal which many believed would have been a game changer. Speaking in an inter-view with journalists after the closed door meeting, Tinubu said the ACN and the CPC are working for a positive change in 2015. Although he declined to make comments on the speculated plans for the merger of the two po-litical parties, he however said “we are working for a positive change in 2015. We don’t want to perpetually be in opposition as every politician wants the opportunity to govern”. He also declined to give details of their discussions at the meeting, saying that “as politicians we discussed in general the situation in the country and how we can help ameliorate the problems.” http://nationalmirroronline.net/news/41796.html#.T9GfpFFKjlc.facebook |
