The Supreme Court has rejected a suit seeking to sack Adamu Bulkachuwa, husband of the Court of Appeal’s President, Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa. A five-man panel of the apex court in a judgment on Monday dismissed the appeal by Usman Tuggar, challenging the election of Bulkachuwa as Senator for Bauchi North senatorial district on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Justice John Okoro, in the lead judgment, dismissed the appeal by Tuggar against the judgment of the Court of Appeal, Abuja delivered on June 11, 2019, which upheld an earlier judgment of the Federal High Court, Abuja, to the effect that the suit was statute-barred, having been filed outside the 14 days allowed by the Constitution. Recalls that the case, filed by Usman Abubakar Tuggar, is an appeal against an earlier judgment by Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu of the Federal High Court, Abuja in a suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/1240/08 by Tuggar, also of the APC. Tuggar, who claimed to have won the APC primary election held on October 3, 2018 in his senatorial district had, by the suit, challenged the APC’s alleged decision to submit Bulkachuwa’s name to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in his (Tuggar’s) place, as its candidate for the actual election held on March 23, 2019. Justice Ojukwu, in her judgment on April 18, 2019, upheld Bulkachuwa’s objection and struck out the suit on the grounds that it was statute barred, having been filed outside the 14 days allowed by the Constitution, a decision Tuggar appealed in the case slated for hearing on Monday by the Appeal Court. Tuggar, in the appeal, filed by his team of lawyers, including Chike Okafor, faulted the judgment of the trial court, which he said resulted from the court’s misunderstanding of his case, particularly the cause of action. He argued that the trial court erred in law when it wrongly held that the applicant (Tuggar) filed the suit outside the 14 days prescribed by Section 285(9) of the Constitution. According to reports, the distraught wife had been given money by her husband, Mallam Aliyu Ibrahim Fayan-Fayan, to buy some things for herself in consolation over the wedding. However while Ibrahim Fayan-fayan was listening to a radio programme around 10pm on Thursday at their home in Danbatta Local Government Area of Kano State, she stormed the room he was in and poured hot water on his body targeting his private part. “Since the time I told her about my plan to marry another wife, I did not see any change of attitude from her and we had been living together peacefully. In fact, she promised me that she would be among those that would buy the wedding items for the bride,” he said. “Last night after I returned home, I bought some meat for them. I met her boiling the water, but I had no idea what she was going to use it for,” he added. A retired major, Yahaya Shiko, who served as the collation agent for the Peoples Democratic Party in the Kaduna South Local Government of Kaduna State during the February 23, 2019 presidential election, said on Thursday that the results of the poll were doctored in his presence in favour of the All Progressives Congress. Testifying before the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal, at the instance of the PDP and its presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, as the 20th petitioners’ witness, Shiko said the poll in his area was marred by over-voting and allocation of figures to political parties that participated in the election. The petitioners are, by their petition filed before the Justice Mohammed Garba-led tribunal of five judges, challenging the victory of President Muhammadu Buhari and his APC at the poll. He said, “My statement was based on the reports I received from the polling unit agents and what I saw on the result sheets which were forwarded to the Local Government collation centre. “There were cases of overvoting, and allocation of figures. “These were what were carried to the Local Government collation centre. “In my presence, the results were doctored.” Earlier responding to questions put to him by the counsel for the Independent National Electoral Commission, Yunus Usman (SAN), the witness said, he protested the doctoring of the results by refusing to sign the result sheets. He said, “Figures were wrongly credited to the APC. “At the collation centre, I made complaints when the results were announced and I protested by refusing to append my signature to the result sheets.” Asked, he said he did not know his complaints were criminal in nature. Also asked if he was aware if any of the perpetrators were arrested and prosecuted, he said, “It is not for me to know.” https://www.google.com/amp/s/punchng.com/presidential-election-results-were-doctored-in-my-presence-in-kaduna-pdp-agent/amp/

The 21st petitioners’ witness, Jafaru Usman, who served as the Peoples Democratic Party’s local government collation agent for the February 23, 2019, presidential election in Zaria, Kaduna State, told the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal in Abuja, on Thursday, that results in his area were rigged in favour of the All Progressives Congress. But the witness, who is a lawyer, said he signed the Form EC8C, the local government area result sheets, not as authentication of what was contained in it but as a mere witness. The petitioners are, by their petition filed before the Justice Mohammed Garba-led tribunal of five judges, challenging the victory of President Muhammadu Buhari and his APC at the poll. Under cross-examination by Buhari’s lawyer, Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN), Usman said the polling unit results contained in Forms EC8A ought to be transmitted to the ward result sheets, Forms EC8B, and then transmitted to Form EC8C, which is the local government result sheet, but that was not the case in his area. “The correct results were not transmitted,” Usman said. But when asked if he signed the Form EC8C, he said, “I signed in line with the provision of the Electoral Act. “I signed it but I did not authenticate what was contained in it. I only signed as a witness in line with the Electoral Act. “What I signed was not a contract. “All those who were in attendance were required to sign in line with Electoral Act.” Asked if any of those who perpetrated the rigging were convicted in court, he said, “I made complaints, they did nothing.” Read more here https://thickmatch.com/signed-doctored-result-sheet-merely-witness-atikus-lg-agent/

A Megan Rapinoe penalty and a Rose Lavelle strike gave the United States a 2-0 win over the Netherlands in the women’s World Cup final in Lyon on Sunday as the holders retained their title. After a goalless first half, the USA went in front just after the hour when Rapinoe converted a spot-kick given following a VAR review. The excellent Lavelle made it 2-0 in the 69th minute as the USA won the World Cup for the fourth time in eight editions and denied European champions the Netherlands a famous trophy double. South American football governing body CONMEBOL hit back at Argentine superstar Lionel Messi on Saturday after he accused the body of corruption. Messi reacted after he was sent-off during Argentina’s 2-1 victory in the third place play-off against Chile earlier in the day. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner was involved in a tangle with Chile captain Gary Medel in which Messi appeared to do nothing wrong, but both players were given their marching orders by referee Mario Diaz de Vivar. “It’s unacceptable that as a result of incidents that are a regular part of competition … unfounded and untrue accusations have been launched that call into question the integrity of the Copa America,” said CONMEBOL in a statement posted on its social media accounts. Earlier, Messi was scathing in his attack on CONMEBOL and the competition’s referees after Argentina felt aggrieved for the second match running. He even accused the governing body of favouring hosts Brazil. “Corruption and the referees are preventing people from enjoying the football and they’re ruining it a bit,” said the global star. “I think there’s no doubt that Brazil is going to be champions. The Copa is weighted towards Brazil,” he added. Argentina felt they were denied two clear penalties in their 2-0 defeat to Brazil in the semi-finals, complaining that the referee for that game, Roddy Zambrano, had refused to consult VAR to check the validity of their claims. And again Argentina were angered that Diaz de Vivar refused to consult with the video assistance to check the incident between Messi and Medel. Messi had shoved Medel in the back as the Chile captain shepherded the ball out of play. Medel reacted furiously, chest bumping Messi a couple of times and seeming to push his head towards the Argentina captain, who didn’t react. Yet both were dismissed by Diaz de Vivar. Messi said his red card was “repercussions” for criticisms he expressed after the defeat to Brazil. “These accusations are a lack of respect to the competition, to all footballers participating and the hundreds of professionals at CONMEBOL, an institution that since 2016 has been tirelessly working to improve transparency, professionalism and development of South American football,” said CONMEBOL. The governing body said that “a fundamental pillar of fair play is accepting results with loyalty and respect.” Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni had earlier said of Messi’s red card: “I still don’t understand what Messi did to be dismissed.” Read more here https://thickmatch.com/south-america-football-bosses-fire-back-messi-corruption-comment/

Argentina captain, Lionel Messi, skipped the Copa America medal ceremony and accused referees of “corruption”, following their failure to win the tournament and his red card in Saturday’s 2-1 win over Chile in the third-place playoff. Messi was sent off before half time, after clashing with Gary Medel for a loose ball. Match referee, Mauro Diaz de Vivar stepped in and immediately flashed red cards for both. After the match, Messi, who didn’t collect his third-place medal with his teammates, ripped into the match officials. “It’s a play that happens a lot. [Medel] always plays to the limit. I think the referee overreacted. With a yellow card for both of us, everything would be over. “I feel lot of anger because I think I did not deserve that red card because I think we were playing a very good game. “We were ahead, but, as I said recently, unfortunately, there is a lot of corruption, the referees. … We leave with the feeling that they did not allow us to be in the final, that we were ready for better. “Brazil’s match and today’s match were our two best performances, but then when you are sincere, you say things and these things happen,” Messi fumed. Asked directly if his red card was a result of his previous complaints, Messi said: “Yes, unfortunately, yes. You cannot be honest, and you cannot say how things should be done.” As a result of the expulsion, Messi faces a suspension for Argentina’s opening World Cup qualifier march but is not bothered by an additional ban for his strong postmatch comments. “They can do whatever they want. The truth must be said. “I leave calmly and with the head high and proud of this group that gave everything and that was growing through the tournament. “I hope that this group is respected and that people support them because they have a lot to give, as they showed in these games,” he added.
