The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Aminu Tambuwal, has said that the House is not running a secret cult. He explained on Tuesday that the House was one to anybody seeking information on any subject of public interest. The speaker added that the House was “transparent” in its affairs, saying that it was open to scrutiny by members of the public. He spoke at a session with journalists, where he lamented that the House had been unfairly criticised over the years by the public. But, the Minority Leader, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, held a contrary view. Gbajabiamila argued that despite passing the Freedom of Information Act in 2011, accessing public information was still a herculean task for members of the public and journalists. The speaker complained that the public was only interested in attacking the legislature but cared less about the challenges before the lawmakers. Tambuwal spoke further, “We are not running a secret cult in the House; we are very transparent. Source: www.punchng.com/news/we-dont-run-a-secret-cult-tambuwal-2/ |
Some policemen and their families escaped being crushed on Monday night when a two-storey building in the Pedro Police Barracks, Somolu, Lagos, collapsed. PUNCH Metrolearnt that the building, which served as the kitchen, bathroom and toilet extension, collapsed at about 8.30pm when most of the residents were in their sitting rooms and bedrooms. A resident, who identified herself simply as Faith, explained that the collapse was not surprising considering the dilapidated state of the barracks. Faith, wife of a sergeant in the barracks, said, “It was around 8.30pm yesterday (Monday) evening. We just heard a rumble as if an earthquake had occurred. When we rushed out, we saw that a two-storey building, which is an extension of the main building, had collapsed with the staircases. We were using the collapsed building as our bathrooms and toilets, while a two-bedroom apartment on the ground floor was occupied by two families. What saved us was that many people were already in their sitting rooms and bedrooms. Otherwise, there would have certainly been casualties. “The noise was so loud that the people living outside the police barracks came in to see whether an explosion had taken place. For now, some of us have started packing because we do not know which building is the next. As you can see, the state of the buildings are not different from one another.” Our correspondent, who was at the site of the collapse on Tuesday , gathered that no fewer than 27 families were affected by the incident. According to the residents, each family has at least four members. About 25 residents from different families were seen bringing out their property down through some ropes since the staircases had collapsed. While this went on, others were seen trying to recover lost property in the debris. Source: www.punchng.com/metro-plus/policemen-families-escape-death-as-lagos-barracks-collapse/ |
A former Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has questioned the competence of the Minister of State for Defence, Musliu Obanikoro, in addressing the insecurity plaguing the country. In a speech made available to our correspondent, Tinubu said Obanikoro had spent more time playing politics rather than facing the job he was appointed to do. He said that during the June 21 governorship election in Ekiti State, Obanikoro was seen playing politics when he should have been in Chibok, Maiduguri, where over 200 girls were kidnapped by terrorists. The All Progressives Congress leader said, “The Minister of State for Defence has spent more time in Ekiti than he has in Chibok. This is not responsible democratic governance. It is a hoax.” He added, “Boko Haram is an extreme manifestation of the chronic and acute misrule that has spread gross injustice and mass poverty across the face of our beloved nation. “All nations have their wayward souls. However, in better governed, more prosperous societies, the number of anti-social actors is much less and even their extremism is somewhat muted. “Because of their low numbers, they are confined to being a law enforcement problem. “But here, abject poverty swells their ranks. Here, they have become a small army. With that, they are a national security threat and a political challenge to a free and open society.” Source: www.punchng.com/politics/tinubu-flays-obanikoro-over-insecurity/ |

THE Federal Government has accused some youths in the country of encouraging terrorist activities on social media. In a statement posted on Twitter, the Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro, said the government was aware that some young Nigerians were on the verge of becoming “broadcast agents” of the violent Islamic sect known as the Boko Haram. Obanikoro urged the youths not to sensationalise acts of evil and terror committed by the sect against harmless citizens on social media. The minister warned that posting pictures and stories of terrorist attacks on social media would not only instil fear in the minds of the people but encourage extremists to continue to unleash terror on the society. Describing the rise in suicide bombings by suspected members of the Boko Haram sect as an act of cowardice, Obanikoro said that Nigerians must be ready to join hands with the FG to check terrorism in the country. He said, “The more you think about a threat or talk about it, the more worried you and the people around you will become. Don’t spread gory stories in the news and on the Internet. Terrorists love it when we sensationalise their acts of cowardice. “We must not succumb to fear. Terrorism is the art of provoking terror and paranoia after every attack motivates terrorists. Be informed, yes, but don’t become a broadcast agent for alarmism, speculation, uncertainty and the grotesque. Citizens, world over, support their governments to fight terrorists. Nigerian citizens must not be an exception,” he said. Obanikoro told the youth not to expect “quick results” from government in the ongoing war against terrorism.
