Samsung Electronics announced its lowest quarterly profits in 14 years on Thursday, blaming declining consumer electronics spending and a global semiconductor glut that harmed its core memory division. The South Korean firm, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of memory chips for smartphones, said in a statement that its operational profit plunged 640 billion won ($478.6 million), or 95 percent, from the previous year. The company’s net income declined 86.1 percent to 1.57 trillion won in the first quarter, while sales fell 18 percent to 63.75 trillion won.

According to the firm, “overall consumer spending slowed amid the uncertain global macroeconomic environment.” Samsung also cited dropping chip prices and weakening demand for memory chips, which typically account for almost half of the company’s revenues. Samsung’s chip division lost 4.58 trillion won, the company’s first operating deficit since 2009, when the world was still recovering from the 2008 financial crisis.

It said this was due to “continued price declines and an increased valuation loss … amid weakening sentiment and continued impacts of inventory adjustments by customers caused by prolonged external uncertainties,” the company said. Demand for memory was “expected to gradually recover” in the second half of 2023, “amid projections that customer inventory levels will have declined.” The firm is the flagship subsidiary of the giant Samsung Group, by far the largest of the family-controlled conglomerates that dominate business in Asia’s fourth-largest economy. The first-quarter drop is the third consecutive margin squeeze for Samsung, which saw a 70 percent fall in operating profits in the fourth quarter-on-year.

On Wednesday, April 26, 2203, certain media outlets stated that Prince Lukman Adelodun Gbadegesin had emerged as the Alaafin of Oyo.

According to unconfirmed reports, Gbadegesin was born into the Gbadegesin family of the Agunloye ruling house. He is the grandson of Alaafin Gbadegesin Ladigbolu II, Alaafin Lamidi Adeyemi III’s predecessor.

Oluwatobi Ogunmola, a 400-level student at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, was discovered dead days after being reported missing.

A theatrical art student at Ekiti State University (EKSU) creates a scenario after allegedly being possessed by the spirit of the Sango god featured in the play.

At a drama performance in the school auditorium, a student playing a deity lost control and was escorted out.

Frank Geng-Quangrong, 47, a Chinese national, told a Kano High Court on Thursday that he attacked his Nigerian fiancée, Ummukulsum Sani, 22, with a knife.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the defendant, who resides in Railway Quarters Kano, is on trial for culpable homicide.

On cross-examination by the Prosecution Counsel, Kano State Director Public Prosecution (DPP), Aisha Mahmoud, Frank told the court that a lot transpired on that fateful day.

A married couple with three children has told how, after conducting a family tree DNA test, they learned they are cousins.

Celina and Joseph Quinones had been married for almost 10 years and had been together for 17 years when Celina began to research her family history.

She found Joseph was her cousin while excavating.

She revealed how the pair discovered they were more than simply husband and wife in a TikTok post under the name @realestatemommas.

George Mudor, a 71-year-old visually challenged Ghanaian man who killed his wife in her sleep, was remanded into police prison by the Nkawkaw Magistrate Court.
On March 14, 2023, Mr Mudor reportedly cut his wife, Madam Grace, 65, with a machete at Abepotia near Nkawkaw in the Kwawu West Municipality in Ghana’s Eastern region.
The woman is reported to have threatened divorce because she was tired of caring for her blind spouse.
The suspect, who went blind five years ago, then decapitated her while she was still asleep on March 14th.

The suspect said that his wife of 28 years had enjoyed the blessings in his life with him and had threatened to divorce him if things became bad, which is why he killed her.

Online videos that have gone viral show women in Nasarawa State protesting naked after the March 18 governorship election.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said that Governor Abdullahi Sule, the candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC), won the governorship election in Nasarawa State, and women took to the streets to show how upset they were.


The reason they were angry was that INEC announced a winner of the governorship election even though the results from Gayam and Ciroma electoral wards in the state capital were not clear.
During the protest, some of the women wore black. Others got completely naked and yelled at the camera to show how unhappy they were.

Kayode Salami, 37, was arrested by the Ondo State Police Command for allegedly raping and killing a nursing mother inside his church.

It was learnt that the deceased, Adejoke Oloje, came to the Oke-Irapada C&S Church, with her cousin, one Aderonke to worship for the first time.

A grandmother, identified as lforiti, is accused of setting fire to her son, wife, and two grandchildren in Apomu community, Akure, the capital of Ondo State.


Eyewitnesses told Vanguard that the grandmother, who lives in the same house as her son, set fire to the house and complained that they were starving her.
