The Book “Killing Commendatore” follows an anonymous male protagonist who is a successful portrait painter. When his wife abandons him for no apparent reason, he embarks on a long motor adventure throughout Japan. After that, he retreats to the house of a previous painter in order to be inspired to paint again. However, he discovers an unnoticed artwork by the artist of the house he is now living in in the attic, which causes a host of complications: He starts hearing a bell ringing in the middle of the night, uncovers a hole in the backyard, and a mystery man approaches him, asking if he could paint his image in any style for an exorbitant sum of money. According to a Murakami novel, things get truly bizarre when a character in the artwork the unnamed protagonist has uncovered comes in physical form, albeit as a two-foot tall depiction.

As the adage goes, the weird goes pro from there. (Or, to use Murakami’s phrase, the circle has been opened.)

Ultimately, this is a novel about Solitude. Pages pass while the protagonist sits alone at his painter’s bench, contemplating the world. Perhaps he’ll spend a page preparing supper or a paragraph brewing coffee. This novel moves at a purposely slow pace, as if the author intended you to savor the environment that these characters occupy. However, this is also a work about the intrusion of solitude: the main character is constantly disturbed by characters who have their own reasons for interacting with him. It’s as if Murakami is saying that you can’t be lonely in this world, especially if you’re an artist. That gets me to my second point: this is also a novel about art, what it means to be an artist, and what makes art art. There are pages of dialogue between characters explaining what certain paintings signify to them, which is difficult to understand because these paintings only exist in Murakami’s imagination. You have take his word for it that these works are any good.

The piece, like certain Murakami books, has an unsettling quality about it. The novel presents a 13-year-old girl whom the anonymous protagonist is commissioned to paint, which may distress some readers. The first time these characters meet, they discuss breasts and joysticks, which is probably not the type of talk a 30-something-year-old man should have with an early adolescent. Murakami avoids the pedophile aspect by making this girl a sort of substitute for Mr. Unnamed Protagonist’s deceased younger sister (who died of a heart ailment when she was 12), but it may still make you uneasy. I assume this is part of the Japanese history of fetishizing youth, but I wonder whether this 13-year-old girl may be concerned with anything other than the size of her breasts.

Despite that flaw — and Killing Commendatore is not without flaws — this is a wonderful work of art that ranks towards the top of Murakami’s canon, following The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle and A Wild Sheep Chase. Even though one may complain that the book is too long — a big portion of the ending includes a character hiding in another character’s house and extensive descriptions of this character doing nothing but hiding – it is an exquisite work of incomparable creativity. Killing Commendatore is a work of genius, a tour de force of twenty-first-century fiction, and a joy to read (mostly). This is the kind of book you could prepare a cup of matcha for and then curl up under the blankets to read at your leisure. Don’t be fooled by the phrase “leisurely,” as this book is rather extensive – the typeset is fairly tiny, giving the impression that it could be a 1,000-page doorstop. Still, the book’s twists and turns keep it interesting, and you can go back and read it again since there’s a little bit of a narrative loop at the beginning that makes more sense once you’ve completed reading.
