Yvete: How can we describe schools like Devry, Everest and VIU for people in Nigeria to get the memo?
It behooves me to say WTF when I see the likes of Devry still mentioned on here. We are talking about a college in the second floor of a 3 -storey office building (the campus close to my house). Everest ain't no better! These one-building schools are NOT for you. YOU CAN DO BETTER! ... How many times will these schools be discussed for stuff to stick in y'all heads?
If you dislike public schools so darn bad, why don't you shoot for Ivy League? And you would like to advance academically with a masters degree, yet the GRE seems like an uphill task to you?? To maintain funding, hope you're aware of the responsibilties involved. GA, TA or RA is not child's play. If you're not up for the challenge, respect yourself and apply for a regular job on-campus.
Read part 3, pp. 141-151 for answers and interview experiences relating to GRE and ghost colleges. sorry o,no vex abeg bt watz d meaning of GA,TA &RA?? |

OjaP: Congrats on your GRE and TOEFL...I had a brief stint at FUTA too in the Applied Geology department working on my Masters before I changed my mind.
You chose the right school, Texas A&M College Station has a very good Geology program. As a matter of fact, all Geology schools in TEXAS are very good. Below are few of them in no particular order,
- University of Texas, Austin - Rice University - University of Texas, Houston - Texas Tech, Lubbock - TAMU College station. etc
Outside of Texas, you may want to consider Colorado school of mines, UC Davies, UC Berkely, UCLA, Stanford, Caltech, USC, University of South Carolina, University of Alaska, Fairbanks, University of Arkansas etc. Most Geology schools in America are very good.
Good you are making a very good decision in switching to Geology, I am confident you won't regret it.
I wish you goodluck in the admission process, feel free to contact me if you have any questions or need anything under my purview. I won't hesitate to help. I am happy we are having more Geologists/Geophysicists in the house.
Have you considered Geophysics? They are in high demand in most oil companies....they need them for seismic interpretation and the rest. Nice response..you dissected the question. |

Yvete: Misleading?? I still think anyone has got an easier chance of getting good O&G jobs if they school in TX, LA and OK. I know 2 young Nigerians (Big boyz now in their own rights ) that schooled in U. Oklahoma at Tulsa for Pet Eng (MS). They got good jobs afterwards. @ Rick: Take a shot at Texas Tech, LSU or U. Louisiana at Lafayette, though hard to get in. I wouldn't recommend UH because its competitive, inside Houston metropolis and people don't mind getting in without GA because of its strong Alumni network in the Houston Energy industry. For assistantships, maybe Alaska and ND.
Pet. Eng in Louisiana is worth it even if you pay out of pocket, IMO. ND has the best Emergency/Risk Mgmt program in the US for those that are interested. Thanks alot Queen Yvete..will take a look at the schools |

OjaP: You must have a Masters in Geology for you to get an entry level or junior geologist position. BS holders only get the geotech positions, this is highly competitive too. This is not the same for Petroleum engineers though because most companies only require you to have a BS to work for them. Please advise your friend to complete his/her MS and try as much as possible to get some internship positions before graduation.
Alaska is one of the largest oil producing state in the USA second to Texas, Alaska has been in the news right from the Exxon Valdez saga in the 80's, that is similar in nature to the recent BP spill in the Gulf oil Mexico. Below are the top 6 oil producing states in the US;
TEXAS, ALASKA, CALIFORNIA, NORTH DAKOTA, NEW MEXICO and OKLAHOMA
TEXAS is first because of the Gulf of Mexico deep water exploration, production, appraisal and development. It is projected that North Dakota will move to the 1st or second position in few years because of its reserves.
Did you just call me oil guru? No oooo..... . Oga u seem to know alot about this oil and gas industry..are u into petroleum too?? Or do u live in ND?? |

imperiouxx: @Rickywowoz,
Sorry about misleading statement of mine about oil in AL and ND. Still I will prefer you taking ND in place of AL. like I said, for someone just coming from outside US, the place won't be conducive and might affect your studies seriously. Hell not only hot, this place is hell cold. Cheers!https://serve.mysmiley.net/party/party0012.gif Abeg! Which kind misleading,i should thanking u for making me know more..Thanks alot Boss and a big TUALE to you. |

OjaP: Bros, North Dakota is the -ish now for Oil and Gas. North Dakota is near amazing geology, the oil boom in ND is no more news. The Bakken formation in the state contain up to 4.3 billion barrels of reserve.
Employment rate in ND is now less than 4.3% due to the oil boom. Geology or Petroleum Engineering grad students will have no problem interning with the local oil companies. This may eventually lead to a permanent job. Also, most of the oil companies there are constantly looking for contractors to work for them, this means experience for starters (grad students who are still in school).
University of Alaska Fairbanks has one of the best Petroleum Engineering program in the country, I think it is worth it to endure the cold, afterall I have friends who schooled there and didn't die of the extreme cold weather conditions.
And YES, you are all correct that California, Texas, Alaska and Loisianna are states where the oil money is, but please add North Dakota to the list. That is the reigning state now. you are right buddy,i read about the north dakota boom but i wanted to confirm from you guys that are there already,as u knw internet dnt always paint the picture of the real situation.. |

imperiouxx: First of all, you can't ever endure the harshest cold spell in Alaska friend, unless you are born and raised in Iceland or high northern Canada with scanty population. Coming from temperate country of about 38 degree Celsius with lowest of 24 to Alaska -50 to -65 degree Celsius. 6 good months of thick iceberg covering seas. You think say that na bean water temperature? No go suffer yourself o
With the cold, you can't joy a day activity let alone study and work there.
Also, what you mean by standard of education system of a US state? Answer: It's like in every state of US. thanks alot boss i was looking at alaska, texas, oklahoma, north dakota, carlifornia, louisana, uta,NM bt its like most skuls in carlifonia and louisana are costly..texas would be my dream destination bt i want to expand my options so nw i'm luking at new mexico, texas, oklahoma and north dakota..wat do u think guys,i'm going 4 Msc in petroleum engineering. |
