The Air Task Force (ATF) of Operation Lafiya Dole, has hit another Boko Haram terrorists’ structure at Warshale in Borno State, killing scores of the terrorists in recent airstrikes. The Coordinator, Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. John Enenche, in a statement on Friday, said the air task force had continued to yield tangible results across the theatre of operation. Enenche said the mission was executed after credible intelligence reports and series of aerial surveillance missions established that the settlement was one of those being used by the terrorists as a staging area to launch attacks. According to him, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) fighter jets and attack helicopters engaged the location and recorded devastating hits resulting in the obliteration of several structures and killing of some of the terrorists. The statement read: “Air strikes being conducted by the Air Task Force (ATF) of Operation LAFIYA DOLE under the subsidiary Operation HAIL STORM have continued to yield tangible results. The latest of these is the destruction of several Boko Haram Terrorists’ (BHTs’) structures and neutralization of their fighters at Warshale in the Northern part of Borno State on 19 August 2020. The mission was executed after credible intelligence reports and a series of aerial surveillance missions established that the settlement was one of those being used by the terrorists as a staging area to launch attacks. Accordingly, the Air Task Force dispatched Nigerian Air Force (NAF) fighter jets and attack helicopters, which engaged the location recording devastating hits resulting in the obliteration of several structures as well as the neutralization of some of the terrorists. https://dailypost.ng/2020/08/21/boko-haram-military-destroys-more-terrorists-structures-kills-several-fighters-in-borno-video/

Islamic scholar and former Special Adviser on Islamic and Hajj Matters to two former governors of Kaduna State, Sheikh Haliru Abdullah Maraya has said the convicted musician can appeal the judgment of the Upper Sharia court if he so wishes, maintaining that the judgment was in tandem with the position of Islam on a blasphemous act. Speaking to Vanguard on the judgment, Sheikh Maraya said the offence was grave and attracts a death sentence. “Regarding the death penalty passed by an Upper Shari’a Court, in Kano State, against the singer who insulted the messenger of Allah Muhammad S.A.W, I would like to say that the offence of such an insult is very grave and attracts a death sentence to the offender. This is the position of Islam. The courts have the right to take any appropriate legal action, within the confines of the law, against anyone who committed a blasphemous act against the messenger of Allah SAWW, as far as Islam is concerned. The convicted singer can appeal against the judgment, in the Sharia court of Appeal, if he so wishes. The relevant authorities and Islamic scholars should make very concerted efforts with a view to educating the general public about the virtues of the messenger of Allah SAWW, and also the consequence of the commission of any blasphemous act against his much esteemed person. Such efforts will go a long way in removing prejudice towards the prophet SAWW from many hearts. By so doing, further blasphemous acts would be forestalled. I will like to use this opportunity to call on the general public to embrace peaceful coexistence. Taking the laws into one’s own hands should be discarded and discouraged at all times and situations. People should always recourse to the law. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2020/08/death-sentence-on-islamic-singer-its-a-very-grave-offence-sheikh/

Nigerian Major General Ibrahim Manu Yusuf, commander of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MJTF) fighting the Boko Haram Islamist insurgency in the Lake Chad Basin, announced August 7 that 109 Boko Haram fighters and their prisoners had defected on the Nigerian-Cameroonian border. Yusuf said the defection was encouraged by a campaign through which Boko Haram fighters who defect would be pardoned. This specific group of defectors have been taken to the Cameroonian Center for Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration. The facility reportedly was built to accommodate 100 but already has 250 residents. According to Voice of America (VOA), the defectors consisted of forty-five Nigerian and three Cameroonian fighters, forty-five Nigerian children, and sixteen women, characterized as “sex slaves.” It is not clear whether the women and children had been kidnapped. One defector said he had joined Boko Haram in return for a promised motorcycle. He said that in the two years he had been part of the movement he had been unable to see his two wives, perhaps implying that his participation was coerced. There are many questions to be answered. Were the defectors coerced into joining Boko Haram? Were the women and children coerced? Or did the defectors include family units? What were the motivations behind joining Boko Haram and then defecting? Finally, what will happen to them now, in an over-crowded rehabilitation facility? Voice of America has expanded its on-the-ground coverage in Borno; it is to be anticipated that there will be more objective reporting on Boko Haram and the MJTF. https://globalsentinelng.com/2020/08/13/mass-defection-of-boko-haram-fighters-in-cameroon/

The crisis rocking the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Cross River State took a more dangerous dimension as councillorship candidates took to the streets in protest, even as the aggrieved councillors took their protest to the factional secretariats of the party, destroying office properties after chasing away staff on duty. The Councillorship Candidates, under the aegis of Cross River State Councillorship Candidates’ Forum, decried the way they have been abandoned by the leadership of the party. Addressing members before embarking on the trip to the two factional Secretariats, both at Marian Street in Calabar Municipal of Cross River State, the Coordinator of the group, Comrade Effiom Yellow-Duke, lamented what the forum members passed through in the hands of the factional leaders of the Party. He said “We have written a letter to the National Caretaker Committee, gave them two weeks ultimatum expecting that they will resolve the lingering crisis in Cross River State APC but up till now, nothing has been done and they have not even called us or come here to resolve the crisis. “We have four solid chains and keys to lock the two secretariats, we will bring down the flags, posters and paste quit notice on them. We shall put our placards all over and lock the secretariats with chains and keys. “Once we lock the secretariats, anybody that cuts our chains and keys, we will burn down the secretariats. We built the party from the polling unit in various wards, and at the end of the day, the party did not show us a platform to contest and win the elections. “We bought forms from the two secretariats, did our tax clearance and every other thing, yet our party did not submit our documents or credentials to the Cross River State Independent Electoral Commission (CROSIEC). “We built the party from the grassroot and in 2020, the party divided themselves into two factions. The party used us to make money and because of the factionalization, we lost the elections.” The group added that “Our party leaders abandoned us, abandoned the process, and abandoned the party and the candidates. They are plotting again to extort money during the Senatorial and House of Assembly elections in the North, we cannot allow it. For now, we don’t have a state Chairman of the Party in the State,” the Coordinator stated. Consequently, on reconciliation, the group said, “A delegation from councillorship candidates’ forum must be part of the reconciliation process at all level in the state, so if they are doing any reconciliation and we are not aware, we have stated that clearly here and then, we will not allow that.” https://peoplesdailyng.com/cross-river-apc-crisis-councilorship-candidates-stage-protests-chase-staff-out-of-factional-secretariat/

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, on Wednesday celebrated the International Youth Day with some Nigerian youth in his palace at Ile Ife, Osun. The monarch, who played host to scores of Nigerian youth from all parts of the country under the aegis of the National Youth Council of Nigeria in Ile-Ife, advocated a replacement for Big Brother Naija. Among other things, he criticised the prominent Big Brother Naija reality show, which he said has been misrepresenting the goodness and integrity of the Nigerian youth. The monarch described the youth as the country’s untapped immeasurable wealth and resources. The royal father, who stressed the need for participation of more youth in leadership, lamented that the youth have misplaced their priorities and must redress it as a matter of urgent public importance. “Nigerian youths are fond of accusing and abusing our leaders, stop abusing them, contribute your own quota. Let’s wear our thinking caps and begin to act like the real future leaders that we are. “In the last general election, the total number of votes cast was around 27 million while over 170 million people voted during the 2019 Big Brother Naija reality show. “This is a practical reality of who Nigerian youth are and where our priorities lie as Nigerians. “The funny side in all of these is that we still go to bed, have a good sleep and wake up with the hope to meet a Nigeria we didn’t create. Nigerians Youths! Nigerians Youths!! Nigerians Youths!!! “Unfortunately, every time I talk about this kind of attitude, everyone just laughs and moves on. What kind of nation are we building? “When people say this country, or what kind of country is this, they are indirectly saying these people – it is the people that make a country; so what kind of Nigerian youths are we?” Speaking further, the monarch offered a suggestion for a reality show, which will project the country’s values, cultures and traditions. He urged leaders of the National Youth Council of Nigeria to work out plans on the show, which will be called, “The Big Nigeria Reality Show.” “The proposed show will be structured in a way that young professionals, talented individuals and others across several field of endeavour will be showcased and helped to reach their peak. “This would help the participants and also help viewers to have access to people that can be seen as role models,” Ooni added. Earlier in his address, the Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, who was represented by Mariam Abdullahi, a Director in the Ministry, explained that the youth have major roles to play in the country’s development. According to him, the digital literacy and skills acquisition, entrepreneurship, employability and leadership initiative of the Ministry are ongoing and all geared towards the development of our youth. “As government, we will keep ensuring that we equip our youth towards prosperity,” the minister assured. Representing Governor Gboyega Oyetola of Osun at the event, the state’s Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Yemi Lawal, said the youth have a lot to learn from the elders towards reaching their goals. “As much as we youths are important, let us be humble enough to learn from our elders because they were once like us. Humility, persistence and patience is the key and we must be upright in our dealings,” he said. In his address, the President of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, Sara-Igbe Sukubo, thanked the Ooni for what he described as an unthinkable warm reception for the youths. “Your Imperial Youthfulness as you told us to address you, we are indeed happy and proud to have you as a father and mentor. “We have heard your kind words of wisdom and I want to assure you on behalf of the teeming Nigerian youths that we will put them into action. “Fellow Nigerian youths, as we reflect on youth engagement for global action today, let us realize that a new era of opportunities and responsibilities is now upon us. “Today’s youths are now being called upon to rise as practical stakeholders in governance and development. Let us rise to this challenge,” Mr Sukubo said. Meanwhile, the youth at the occasion announced the Ooni as the ”Royal Father of Nigerian Youths”, in recognition and appreciation of his immeasurable commitment towards youth development in the country. Similarly, the founder of Elizabeth Jack-Rch Aid Foundation, who is equally the matron of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, Elizabeth Jack-Rich, was given an award for her role and stance as a mentor to the Nigerian youths. Mrs Jack-Rich had earlier expressed the readiness of her foundation to sponsor the reality show proposed by the Ooni. She admonished youths to ignore all forms of distraction and negative peer pressure on their way to success.(NAN) https://thenationalreporterng.com/ooni-wants-big-brother-naija-replaced/
