Celebrities / Biography Of Sheyi Emmanuel Adebayor The Togolese Footballer by robay1(m): 5:02pm On Dec 10, 2016
Emmanuel Adebayor

Sheyi Emmanuel Adebayor is a professional
footballer. He was born in Lome, Togo, a West
African nation on the Gulf of Guinea on
February 26, 1984 by Nigerian parents from the
Yoruba ethnicity.

EARLY LIFE

The soccer star has dual nationality – Nigeria
and Togo by naturalization. However, he spent
his childhood in Kdjoviakope, a neighborhood
of Lomé, bounded by the Route Circulaire and
the Togo-Ghana border before leaving the
African country in pursuit of his football career.

ADEBAYOR’S FAMILY

Adebayor’s father hails from little village called
Igbaye in ‘OdoOtin local government area of
Osun, while their mother is from a neighboring
town called Ekusa.

Emmanuel has three brothers and two sisters,
but is closet to one of his sisters, Iyabo. His
younger brother’s name is Rotimi Adebayor.

He father, Shedrack Adebayor Adeyi died in
2005, leaving behind his mother, Hajia
Adebayor.

RELIGION

In a controversial move that many still struggle
to understand, Emmanuel Adebayor officially
renounced Christ accepted Allah and the Islamic
religion on Sunday the 5th of July 2015. The
conversion ceremony held in his adoptive home
country of Togo.

The many attempts to understand what
motivated him has proved abortive especially
since he attributed the miracle of his walking at
the age of 4 to the church.
MARRIAGE

The Togolese professional footballer is married.
He has a daughter named Kendra (who was
born in June 2010).
FOOTBALL CAREER

Emmanuel Adebayor started his football career
at the age of 11 at the Centre de Developpement
Sportif (CDS), also known as Sporting Club de
Lomé – a popular football training school back
then.

In 1991, he was spotted in Sweden by Metz
coach, Francis De Taddeo during a youth
tournament and was subsequently brought to
France. On November 17, 2001, he made his
Ligue 1 debut against FC Sochaux-Montbéliard.
He also played a season in Ligue 2, where he
scored 13 goals in 34 leagues matches. During
his two seasons in Metz, Emmanuel Adebayor
was voted best player in the second division.
In 2003, he moved to Monaco after his former
club Metz got relegated. His stay in Monaco was
however not so rosy as he only managed to
score 18 goals in 61 league starts.

Adebayor featured only nine times in the club
and was an unused substitute in the match that
towered them to 2004 Champions League final,
having played against Jose Mourinho’s Porto in
Gelsenkirchen.

On 13 January 2006, he was signed by for a
reported £3. Adebayor made his debut for in a
Premier League match at Birmingham City on 4
February 2006, scored after 21 minutes.

On 22 September, he scored his first hat-trick
for Arsenal in a 5–0 home win against Derby
County.

Adebayor signed a five-year contract with
Manchester United on 18 July 2009, for a
transfer fee of £25million.

On his debut with the red devils, he scored a
goal against Blackburn Rovers in the third
minute of the game.

Two years later, Adebayor signed a loan deal to
play for Real Madrid for the remaining season.
His first goal for the club came in the second leg
of the Copa del Rey semi-final against Sevilla.

He later joined Tottenham Hotspur on 25
August 2011 on a loan. On his debut in
September 2011, he scored against
Wolverhampton Wanderers in the 67th minute.
On 26 January 2016, Emmanuel Adebayor,
signed a six-month deal with Crystal Palace

INTERNATIONAL CAREER

The soccer star was one of the brains behind
Togo’s qualification of 2006 Africa Cup of
Nations, having scored 11 goals in the
qualifiers.
Position

Emmanuel Adebayor is a center-forward striker.
AWARDS

Adebayor was picked by CAF for the 2008
African Football of the Year on 10 February 2009
at an awards ceremony held in Lagos, Nigeria.
He was the first Togolese to win the African
Football of the Year, beating Egypt’s nominee
Mohamed Aboutrika and Ghana’s football star
Michael Essien in a vote that involved the
national team coaches of CAF’s 54 member-
nations.
THE ADEBAYOR FAMILY CRISIS

The scuffle between the Adebayors started in
November 2014 after the striker sent his mother
and sister out of his mansion in Accra, accusing
them of witchcraft and using charms on him.
Emmanuel Adebayor told All Sports that he will
never talk to his mother who he alleged was
behind his poor performance in his career at
that time.

In response, Adebayor’s elder brother slammed
the footballer for branding their mother a witch.
He rather accused Emmanuel of being
brainwashed by Muslim alfas, who prophesied
when he scores goals and why he is not playing
well.

Extended family members who weighed into the
case also called for peace and warned the
soccer star to stop washing the family’s dirty
linen in public.

They then called on the Adebayors to give
attention to their family house in Igbaye, Osun
state, Nigeria. The scruffy house was built by
Emmanuel’s late father while he was living in
Ghana. He never brought home his children and
was buried in Togo after his death in 2005.
