New Year’s Eve, St. Jacques, Perpignan, 2006 This picture of a five year-old gypsy boy was taken on New Year’s Eve 2006 in the gypsy community of St. Jacques, Perpignan, Southern France. For Christmas and New Year’s Eve, the men would gather in the Café in their best suits to drink and dance while their wives would prepare dinner at home. It is quite common in St. Jacques for little boys to smoke.

Omayra Sánchez [1985] Omayra Sánchez was one of the 25,000 victims of the Nevado del Ruiz (Colombia) volcano which erupted on November 14, 1985. The 13-year old had been trapped in water and concrete for 3 days. The picture was taken shortly before she died and it caused controversy due to the photographer’s work and the Colombian government’s inaction in the midst of the tragedy, when it was published worldwide after the young girl’s death.

The Starving Boy and Missionary Wells felt indignant that the same publication that sat on his picture for five months without publishing it, while people were dying, entered into a competition. He was embarrassed to win as he never entered the competition himself, and was against winning prizes with pictures of people starving to death. Footprint on the Moon [Lunar, 1969] On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong put his left foot on the rocky Moon. It was the first human footprint on the Moon. They had taken TV cameras with them. The first footprints on the Moon will be there for a million years. This photograph was taken by Buzz Aldrin.

The Assassination of Japan Socialist Inejiro Asanuma [1960] This picture was taken only a second before the Japanese socialist Party leader Asanuma was assassinated by a right wing student. Photographer Yasushi Nagao said he was only on the right place and on the right time. He received a Pulitzer price for this photo.

The Power of One [2007] This picture won the Pulitzer Breaking News Photography 2007 award. Photo’s citation reads, "Awarded to Oded Balilty of The Associated Press for his powerful photograph of a lone Jewish woman defying Israeli security forces as they remove illegal settlers in the West Bank".

The last Jew in Vinnitsa [1941] This was found in the personal album of an Einsatzgruppen soldier. It was labelled on the back “The last Jew of Vinnitsa”. All 28,000 of the Jews living there in Vinnitsa, Ukraine, in 1941, were massacred at the time.

Sichuan Earthquake [2008] A man is crying while he flips through a family album he found in the rubbles of his old house.

V-J Day [New York, 1945] This is one of the most famous photographs from the Second World War. The soldier and the nurse are unknown but people have come forward to claim the fame. Apparently the nurse slapped the soldier immediately after. The event was the celebration of the end of the war and it was taken in Times Square by Alfred Eisenstaedt.

Death by Protocol In 19th century Siam, it was absolutely forbidden for a commoner to touch the queen. To break this rule carried the death penalty. One day Queen Sunandha Kumariratana was in a boat which capsized, plunging her into a river. Though there were many people who might have come to her aid it would have meant their own death to touch the royal body. She died at the age of 19 along with her daughter.

Tiananmen Square [China, 1989] This is probably the most famous picture you know. This is the picture of a student who tries to stop the tanks in Tiananmen Square standing in front of them. The tank driver didn’t crush the student with the bags but shortly after, the square was filled with innocent blood. The photo showed the Chinese that there is hope. However, China is still controlled by a communist regime.

Losing In this picture, Lurlena cries in the back of the family car after losing the contest for Carnival Princess at her school. She spent the day getting ready, with a new white dress and new shoes. The winner was decided based on whose parents bought the most tickets, and Lurlena’s family could only afford eight dollars worth.

Burning Monk – The Self-Immolation [1963] June 11, 1963, Thich Quang Duc, a Buddhist monk from Vietnam, burned himself to death at a busy intersection in downtown Saigon to bring attention to the repressive policies of the Catholic Diem regime that controlled the South Vietnamese government at the time. Buddhist monks asked the regime to lift its ban on flying the traditional Buddhist flag, to grant Buddhism the same rights as Catholicism, to stop detaining Buddhists and to give Buddhist monks and nuns the right to practice and spread their religion. While burning Thich Quang Duc never moved a muscle.

The First Photograph [France, 1826] Taken by Nicéphore Niépce, this is the first photograph ever taken which still exists. He called his method heliography (sun writing) and this photograph took 8 hours of exposure time (hence sunlight on both sides of the building).

This year’s Rhythm Unplugged show, which took place on the 23rd of December, 2012 at the Eko Hotel & Suites, was hosted by Basketmouth, Bovi and Buchi. There were musical performances by Tiwa Savage, Timaya, Seyi Shay, Wande Coal, P-Square, Waje, Lynxxx, Chuddy K, May D, Davido, Adewale Ayuba, Vector, Choc Boiz, E.M.E All Stars, Yemi Alade, Dammy Krane, Olamide, Sound Sultan, Efa and Omawumi, while AY, I Go Dye, Gordons, Seyi Law, Aleh Baba and Pencil dished out rib-cracking jokes. The highlight of the event was meant to be Tonto Dikeh’s stage performance, which didn’t happen for unknown reasons. Anyways, see pictures below from the event
