Economy has carved out a different role for everyone. Moreover society has evolved much.
You are viewing the OP's predicament from a quick-fix angle. The OP is saying that her hubby is not making much effort as a man to put food on the table! Economy carving out roles for everyone is just figurative and relative. Its good for a wife to help when the chips are down for the husband but its not for the husband to take full advantage of it and become lazy thereby relinquishing his role to the wife. Even in the developed countries, husbands are natural breadwinners irrespective of how much the wife makes per month.
Pray that you do not find yourself living with a husband that's lazy and not bringing any income home. Its better to imagine it than experience it.

Please lets get something straight.
Signing a page in the marriage registry does not change anyone especially something that someone has done for 8 years of his life.
You don't suddenly wake up the next morning after the wedding as a totally different person. You still are who you are before you went to bed last night.

The man has not changedo
The wife wants him to change

He has always been like this
He has put his cards on the table since day one
He has not put down a dime since the day they got married, so how was the wedding paid for?
Leading up to the wedding what were the discussions on their finances and how they will be managed?
I guess the poster paid most of the wedding expenses
Alarm bells have been ringing for years but were ignored maybe due to other positive traits that the man had or "he will change"

He came as a whole package, so one just cant pick the things that one likes about him and discard the others
This sounds like a man who would thrive better as a house husband. There are few men who are like that.
He should have married someone who was comfortable with that kind of set up and that is what I don't like about all of this.

I don't think he will change
Both hubby and wifey are in for a long and bumpy ride because they have different expectations.
Going back to her parents house will even give the man more opportunity to be even more lazy when he knows that his wife is being well looked after at home.
It will even take some of the guilt away from him.

My only advise is to do what you have to do to deliver your baby in good health and go back to work and face your cross.
Pray pray and pray that your husbands projects materialise and when he does get paid, pls find a way of re investing that money so he doesn't squander it all before the next project comes along.

Safe delivery and all the best.
Thank you madam tearoses for your words of wisdom.
I can bet on anything that the OP's husbands projects may never materialise. I am not wishing or praying that it shouldn't, but realistically, its just a ploy to keep giving excuses. Even if the projects are delayed, nothing stops him from having plan B and C on how other income can come in pending when the projects materialises. Like you said, both the OP and hubby are in for a long ride together. However, I still believe the whole situation can still be managed and its not hopeless yet.

Why is it a big deal that your man must be the one financially responsible for the home? If you can pick the bills then do it, life is too short to argue over who should do what. Like you said, he's an amazing man in every other aspect, so cut him some slack please. What if you were not married, will you not pick your own bills?
Plan your finances, cut all extra costs you cant afford.
Get a job for yourself, there are single pregnant mothers out there who are able to making a living for themselves.
Do same for yourself and don't give yourself high blood pressure!
Are you married? With all due respect, do you understand what it means for a wife to be the breadwinner of the family?....Nature has already carved out roles for husbands and wives to maintain a balance.

What can a man do when the job is not available?

I don't think I'm in a right position to blame your husband cos I would probably be sleeping if I were in his shoes as well. The current government is frustrating entrepreneurs. I've spent N1000 on T-fare only today searching for fuel to power Generator.

PHCN is currently on strike, and the Mcomfort ter of Petroleum who also doubles as the GCFR is somewhere gallivanting with South African president. Honestly, the kind of hardship I've undergone today is enough for me to charm Mr. President so he can go and join his ancestors. In this mood, I'd not want any woman to nag about money or getting a useless job somewhere that can hardly feed a family for 3 days.

Sometimes, all we need is words of encouragement, a little positive push without nagging. Nobody loves poverty, but tell me, what can someone like me do in this condition where all I do revolves around electricity. I've gone to over 6 filling stations and no one is ready to sell in Jerry cans, mind you only 6 out of about 50 stations open their doors for vehicles. I don't think I can ever beat or fight a woman but if any one mention Sai Baba or Change around my dwelling place, such a person may not see the next minute. Things like this kills motivation, will and drive to achieve anything. It makes you lose your clients, their trusts and of course money.

May be your husband's project is being hampered by some wicked forces in government.

This is not a period to advise a man whose business worth N200k/month to go out there and search for a N5k/job. Such a man can kill his employer.

Sorry I'm harsh but it is the hard truth. Ever since you've been doing your business, why don't you put him through since you get paid frequently?

The Nigerian situation is no longer funny. Wives, please do not nag your husbands into frustration and depression.
Sir, to a large extent, I strongly disagree with your opinion here. Its true that the economic situation of Nigeria is at its lowest ebb at the moment, but that does not warrant an able bodied man stop hustling continuously for daily bread for his family. Personally, I have always had this mindset of :..... The husband's money is the family's money while the wife"s money is her money. She has the sole right to help the husband with her money or not.....its good and loving for a wife to always help the husband, but the husband should also not totally depend on it.
The OP's husband should be more creative and think of ways of opening up channels for multiple streams of income. The art of making money in the present day world has made it possible to work smartly and not hardly. The husband should be more creative, think out of the box and brainstorm on how to make money from different sources. He is too comfortable and needs to pushed out from his comfort zone!! His creative mind has not been activated. Aside his projects, nothing stops him from engaging in any other money making ventures. Sound entrepreneurs always seek avenues of creating streams of income.

@OP, please I think its time for drastic measures to be taken, else you better start seeing yourself as the breadwinner of your family.......

If you stay in Abuja, buy an unbranded taxi and give it out on hire purchase for weekly payment. Then use the remaining money and buy one or two bike and also give it out on hire purchase weekly payment. However, the bike can only work in outskirts of Abuja like Kubwa, Karu, etc.

My niece in law, she died oo

She was 19yrs old.

Dats not the worse part, she died in severe pain. A week before she died her dad returned her to her mum saying he is tired dat she is not getting better.

The girl call me one day crying that her mum is beating her. I was so angry, I called the mum and out of frustration spoke rudely to her, she said the girl doesn't drink her medicine until they threaten to beat her.

I apologised and begged her not to beat her but to take her to the hospital the next morning. They said they are taking her to church and the pastor said the battle has been won.

After another round of shouting and apologising they took her and said the doctors has finally given her a diagnosis, dat it's not cancer like I said but Arthritis.

That they need money to buy drugs, I sent them money promising to send more. Within 3days the girl died , the mum ran home crying . The rest of the family followed her back to the hospital only to get there to meet that the girls dad has taken the body to his village for burial.

And dat was the end of osaherumwen. cry
I am so sorry for your loss. From your narratives, its obvious that the girl's family has some unresolved issues. With all due respect to the departed, these kind of family brouhaha happens sometimes. It can happen anywhere in the world. Even in the USA and UK, there are deranged fellows who go on shooting spree, killing people just for fun.Crazy fellows are not limited to any particular geographic region of the world. Like someone said earlier in his post, adaptation is key. Besides, for the OP to have lived in Europe for 15 years, he/she might have become a citizen or at least have a valid resident permit. Also, he/she must have had some saved amount of money. So, its not like they will be starting from scratch financially.

before i started visiting nigeria, i wanted to moveback home becos i thot things might be better,

i will have my old frds just reminiscing sha,

i visit every year now, i will never move my family to naija,

the system is BROKEN, FACT.
Quite agree with you that the system is broken but not broken beyond repair. It can still be salvaged. That's why I said in my initial post that the OP have to make up his/her mind in accepting the fact that infrastructures are dilapidated, but can be revived. From the economic point, dilapidated infrastructures can sometimes create avenues for wealth. Hence, you have some foreigners leaving the comfort of their country to invest in Nigeria. Remember, Europe is already developed, hence, investments and businesses are highly regulated. Unlike Nigeria that regulations are a bit relaxed. In a nutshell, the advantages of moving back to Nigeria is huge, so also the disadvantages are also massive. It all boils down to the OP's future vision. For me, it paid off and I am happy for moving back. I wouldn't have been able to build what I have now if I was still in Europe. Besides, I had a flourishing career while in Europe. I and my family still visit Europe whenever we feel like.

To be honest his prices seem high...but the gospel truth is that it's not his fault. The prices he gives are live prices. If you go through his past posts you will notice how the prices of vehicles have been changing due to exchange rate.
Last year a 2008 toyota highlander was going for 3.8million but now it's going for 4.8 million.

Na dollar fall cause am....The worst thing is that, the exchange rate is getting even worse. I usually advise people to get theirs as soon as possible before their money lose value.
I quite agree with you. Mr. Tadeus is very open and honest. I intend doing business with him this year. Wether dollar high or not. I just need a honest and sincere car dealer for my business since its now a big trouble bringing in cars from USA. However, for a manual 1994 carina E to cost 900k is a bit too high. I wonder what a Camry 1999 model will cost!!!

Hello! I just need some general advice or insight. My hubby, after living abroad for 15 years, now wants to return home. I and the children have never been there. It is a big move and I am excited but nervous. What advice do you have for me? And what can I expect in terms of housing, job searching and schools for the children? I know I am asking a very broad question but I would appreciate any advice at all. Thank you.
@OP, I was once in your shoes almost 4 years ago. And I thank God everything went fine for me. However, before moving to Nigeria, just know that as a developing country, the infrastructures are incomparable with abroad. You have to resolve within yourself to get used to unstable power supply, bad roads, African time and mentality, general poor quality education and worse of all, bad governance. But if you are focused and hardworking, you can make it in Nigeria. Nigeria has a lot of advantages that Europe and America do not have. That's why the Nigeria billionaire businessmen still prefer Nigeria. I will suggest a gradual movement back to Nigeria. Maybe your hubby could be coming regularly to Nigeria to survey things and prepare grounds before you and kids join him. I may suggest you consider Abuja. Abuja is cool and has arguably the best roads and urban organization in Nigeria. However, if u chose Abuja, just know that your hubby will have to be a businessman because well paying jobs are not easy to get. In Abuja, businesses like real estates, transport, food and ICT thrives. Also, Abuja has good schools. Lagos is another place to consider but to enjoy Lagos, u have to stay at Victoria Island. Lagos is a tough place to stay but it has more job opportunities since more companies are located there. But your hubby can base in Abuja and work or do business in Lagos and vice versa. A lot of Nigerians do it.

mrsage:
Uber is highly overrated in my opinion. You can set up your Cab Service business and get clients regularly without them.

Too many people jumping on the uber platform these days. Very soon they will have more cars than they need.

Again uber cab prices are too low. Good for uber and customers but not good for the car owners /investor. Remember as a car owner you handle repairs and maintenance.

Airport cab guys charge better than uber. (Murtala Muhammed Int'l Airport Lagos to be specific). That means more profit margins.

My humble submission : join the uber platform if you are a novice in transport business. They flood you with customers since you don't know how to get them.

Also join uber if you have a day time job and you take it as a side business.

When you gain experience and you are ready to play in the game called Cab Service. You will ditch them fast.

Warning : N250,000 monthly is not guaranteed. It is more of a marketing slogan.
I totally agree with you. You just spoke my mind. I believe and know that taking uber as full time will have limitations.

In business, future limitations shouldn't be courted. It could limit or hurt earnings.

How lucrative is taxi business in abuja? How much do they return? Does anyone know about it or is into the business in Abuja?.
Abuja taxi bizness is very lucrative if u get a good driver. The environment for taxi bizness in Abuja is quite good and organised. Customers are very selective of the kind and condition of the taxi they enter. So, the taxi must be very neat and clean. Also, the kind of cars used for the taxi is also a factor. As for the drivers return, its negotiable depending on the route, type of vehicle and condition of vehicle. Returns could range from 13-20k per week. You will make more money if u have more than one taxi. Taxi Transport bizness is sometimes about the numbers of taxi, and u will see your money coming in bulk. You also need good management and discipline and perseverance to grow the bizness.

Abuja and Lagos are the two major cities in Nigeria, I have heard people debate over the two cities in terms of opportunities for Jobs and Small Business.

Please I want nairalanders who know the two cities well to give their opinion on this.

Most especially those who have business in the two cities or have worked there.

For jobs, its definitely Lagos. If its business, it depends on the type of business. If you can be more specific on the type of business, maybe I can comment further.
