How do i get a host,that is hosting my website

How do i get an FTP username and password,as i was told that you need an FTP username and password for any site
you want to upload,and if it is not free,how much does it cost,and where and how do i get it.

Since i really want to improve i would want to do a kind of apprentice with a good
web designer or firm,i would be ready to pay if it is not free.as i want to build on the idea and knowledge i already have.
