RoyalUc: I think you were right when you said "We need to start reasoning beyond sentiments."
No matter how hard we try, people will always look for loopholes to propagate corruption. But look at it this way.
- Is it that Dangote Group will no more have their Annual Financial Report (Prepared in accordance with FRS - IFRS) audited? - is it that the Groups CIT ordinarily can't be properly computed/evaluated? - is it that that value of the work done can't be fairly determined?
Now. Dangote finishes the project and claims he spent #2trillion. The groups Annual Reports and Accounts show a tax liability of #1.2trillion. The Federal Ministry of Work hire an independent foreign auditing firm to evaluate and give a fair value and they say #1.9trillion for instance, what do you think will happen.
"If tomorrow every company in Nigeria say they want to fix infrastructure in lieu of Tax rebates," I don't think "a new Era of Tax evasion an corruption would have started." As a matter of fact, that will be better for us provided the right financial and accounting standards and followed.
Look. Tax collection involves a lot of cost and there are higher chances of misappropraition and embezzlement of funds.
The planning and execution of projects also involve a lot of cost - project design, bidding and selection processes, mobilization and 'kick-backs' etc.
To me, it's even better for coys to 'pay' their taxes directly through executing projects provided the process is fair and accountable. This is all on a premise that companies and human being are 100 percent honest but in reality they are not at all ..I understand what you are saying but unfortunately it won't fly because I know the process will be thoroughly abused |

RoyalUc: The reasons for imposing tax is to finance public infrastructure and this is a direct (and maybe, more efficient) way to use taxation for its purpose provided there is fairness and accountability.
If govt collects the amount for that project through FIRS (which incurs cost - cost of collecting tax and may be embezzled) and uses it for that purpose or 'collects' the equivalent directly (without the cost of collecting tax) in terms of the project, I think they are thesame, though I would prefer the later.
Provided there is fairness and accountability, i.e, the project will be properly valued. We've been told foreign auditing firm(s) will evaluate the cost. So, for me, if the value of the work done by Dangote is equivalent to the CIT he would have paid, there is no wahala.
My only problem is that our govt keeps making the strong stronger. This project should be the last that should be done in this illegitimate way ..right now it might sound OK but if tomorrow every company in Nigeria say they want to fix infrastructure in lieu of Tax rebates I hope you know a new Era of Tax evasion an corruption would have started ..Even those Dangote deal has created a 4 way loop hole for corrosion already at the NPA level , at the Ministry of works level, at the FIRS level then at Dangote group itself ..We need to start reasoning beyond sentiments because no matter how commendable this looks at first glance it actually an invitation to a new channel of corruption and anarchy |

RoyalUc: This whole idea/strategy sounds cool since one of the reasons for imposing tax is to finance public infrastructure and this is a direct (and maybe, more efficient) way to use taxation for its purpose provided there is fairness and accountability.
But I share MaziOmenuko's sentiments. The NASS should not be allowed to continue like this. If this continues, I foresee a time the NASS will hand-twist and blackmail the Executive into carrying out their biddings. Nothing cool about that , it's is an invitation to financial and tax fraud + anarchy |

Asking Buhari's to give u a National Carrier is tantamount to asking your local Butcher to save the life of a goat ..In 1984 Buhari inherited a Nigeria Airways at the height of its strength with 34 working aircrafts making it the largest Airline in Africa and the MIDDLE East then but Buhari's poor leadership will see this great airline plunge from 34 planes to just 4 in just one year of his leadership...Buhari killed the Nigerian Airways he inherited at its apogee and now you expect him to grow it from Zero Aircraft hahahahahahaha me OP please get realistic and stop dreaming |

Rihamz: if these succeeds other roads should follow. God bless fashola. slowly but surely nigeria will get there. That's would be an invitation to anarchy and create another opportunity for a new type of corruption to evolve that would help many big companies evade tax ..There was nothing creative about what the govt did about the road because even the NPA could have singlehandedly fixed that road ..BTW I thought the NIA was supposed to even contribute 40 percent of the funds while Dangote brought 60 percent and now Hadiza is silent on that ...This should not be encouraged beyond this particular project please |

GreyLaw: Indeed, president Buhari remains the greatest threat to our collective existence as a country, not even the various secessionist groups and all other forms of shadows he so much loves to hate.
If truly people receive a just reward for their actions on earth (I guess it's usually in the afterlife), Buhari should not have had a sniff of the exalted office of the president of Nigeria. But alas...
See how divided, rift-torn and hatred-filled the country has become all because of one man's insatiable lust for power and inability to lead.
Isn't it a thousand pities that some Nigerians are still itching to vote this same man again come 2019? I pray their plans get botched!
But like FSBoperator said, God willing, we shall outlive this administration. And I hope we can then put all this memory of horror into the trash can. You won't believe I was among those who campaigned and voted for Buhari even though my mom warned me severally that most of us clamouring for the man don't know him but today she is so right .. after 8 months of his inauguration I had to go back and thoroughly research our past economic history because I couldn't understand why the man seemed ineffective, it was then I saw that Buhari was responsible for 80 percent of the rot Nigeria had become , he was responsible for the 80 percent of criminal tendencies Nigerians had developed , the problem was never corruption ( infact it was after his coup in 1984 that Nigerian embraced corruption fully as a means to survive the uncertainty ) , the problem was never Babangida ( infact Babangida was the saviour of the day even though Nigerians will erroneously blame him for decades for taking them through an economic uncertainty brought about by Buhari's incompetence) , the problem was never low oil prices , nor was it colonialism, the problem was Buhari ..It would take Nigerians over 30 years to overcome that the side effects of that episode and just when Nigerians started buying new cars again , when they started buying brand new computers again we will make the same mistake and vote in the same man whose lack of vision had destroyed us in the first place and now we are back to point where no worker in Nigeria can afford a Hyundai with his earnings except they get corrupt and steal , we are back to the time where Nigerians are embracing crime in all shades just to make sure they survive , Juju shrines are being patronised more than ever just because people want to survive the uncertainty ...It's really sad |
