The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, says he reads comments of people who claim not to believe what he says and coin his first name as “Lie’’. The minister stated this while responding to questions when he visited Daar Communications Plc. on Friday in Abuja. He said that such comments were the mindset of the people and a price he had to pay for serving the nation.

“People just have a mindset that whatever Lai Mohammed says cannot be true, but nobody has ever come out to say that I said ‘Y’ and it was ‘Z’ that happened. For me, I will remain focused because it is a price you pay for serving your country. I also see this as a deliberate strategy to whittle me down, but I must remain focused and will not be distracted,’’ he said.

Mohammed said that some people found it difficult to separate him from “Lai Mohammed as All Progressive Congress (APC) spokesperson and Lai Mohammed, Minister of Information’’.

“I believe sincerely that the last election was fought very bitterly and I was largely the face of the party and I kept asking them to fight me on facts, not on emotions. Give me one thing that I have said which is not true. There is a Yoruba proverb that says that you can only wake up somebody who is sleeping, you cannot wake up a fellow who is pretending to fall asleep,’’ he said.

He recalled when he led local and foreign journalists on tour of the North-East on December 5, 2015 and he told the world that Boko Haram war had been technically defeated.

Mohammed said that when he made the claim nobody believed him but that today he had been vindicated.

He said that all the schools that were closed then in the North-East have been reopened and that all the territory occupied by the terrorists had been reclaimed by the military.

He added that recently, he led a team that flew over Sambisa forest unhindered and without traces of Boko Haram terrorists.

“However, when you are fighting insurgency, it is not like regular war that you win at once, there will still be suicide bombing. There will still be ambush but that does not mean that we have not won the war,’’ he said.

The Lagos state police commissioner, Fatai Owoseni, has agreed to provide security for the February 6th protest that is slated to hold at the National Stadium, Lagos. After a meeting with the organizers of the rally, the Commissioner who spoke to newsmen said

“We had a meeting with the protesters and we explained to them why we advised against the protest. A pro-government group wants to protest that same day and we don’t want a situation where there would be friction.

We also don’t want hooligans to hijack the process and injure the protesters. After explaining to them, they said they will go back and discuss with others. They said if they decide to go ahead, they won’t demonstrate but would assemble at a point and read their demands.

That notwithstanding, we have resolved to provide security for them. It is our responsibility and we won’t shy away from it. We will ensure trouble makers do not hijack the process.”

The Director of Lagos State Fire Service, Mr Rasak Fadipe, on Tuesday said they recovered two bodies from a petrol tanker and a deep well on Monday in the state.

He said that on Tuesday an unidentified man, who attempted to steal petrol inside a stationary tanker, was suffocated by the fumes and died.
“The tanker was parked opposite Morogbo Police Station, along the Badagry Expressway. The dead man was removed at about 5pm on Monday and was handed over to Morogbo police men,” he said.

In another development, the service also recovered the body of another unidentified man, who fell into a deep well of about 150 feet on Monday night.

Fadipe, who said that the incident happened at Iju Isahga area of the state, stressed that it took them many hours before they retrieved the body.

“We got information that a male adult fell into a deep well of about 150ft deep at Iju Road, besides Skye Bank. Our men mobilized and went there immediately, but were able to retrieve the body many hours later on Monday.

“The well is located at a virgin land, no one knows what the victim was looking for before falling into the well,” he said.

The Imo State government led by Governor Owelle Rochas Okorocha, is set to become the first state in Nigeria to own and operate an airline company operated by Dana Air as the governor led his appointees and stakeholders in the State to take delivery of the first batch of aircrafts at the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri.
The carrier named "IMO AIR" is billed to hold its own against other operators in the Nigerian aviation sector while providing enhanced revenue for the State, massive employment for Imo citizens and business opportunities for Imolites and Ndi Igbo in general.

Also in the offing is the Imo International Cargo which targets to open the Southeast up to importers and exporters of all kinds of commodities, thereby reducing the over reliance on Lagos, Kano and other international airports for the export and import of goods into the country.

This initiative is no doubt a boost for the Southeast economic liberation struggle. According to the Governor, the cargo aspect of the "IMO AIR" initiative will take off by April, 2017.
