You won't die if what is lost is not replaced. How much does Netflix generate as revenue from Nigerian users, how much of that amount does it pay to Nigeria in the form of taxes? Big companies cannot continue to monetize our large population while offering nothing of substantial value back into the system. If only Nigeria was in a better place, the government ought to demand outright distribution rights from these companies for their content at a percentage. Tech companies will always scream and throw tantrums but the truth remains that these guys will still make a killing in profits after all said and done. Don't make it seem like they're helping Nigeria.

The entertainment sector contributes 10% to GDP and employs thousands.

It did not get there because of NTA or channels TV.

Even in the West where these streaming companies were birthed, they compete on content to attract customers - hence why Game of Thrones was exclusive to HBO, and some Netflix users had to migrate to that platform. Do you know what Netflix did after that? They put their head down, and created even better content.

I may not be getting the full picture here, but the government wants to stop exclusivity. As part of intellectual property rights, there's no way the government can force a content provider to give out its intellectual property for free, there'd have to be financial gains for such a transaction for the content provider. I believe the problem these companies have with the new order and exclusivity is the fact that they can't exclusively hold rights of distribution to their works and hence stipulate and force consumers to pay whatever they please because said customers have no alternatives. Competition helps the common man at the end of the day, FG should compel them to sub-license to other broadcasting organizations who want their contents, let them negotiate and flood the market, they'd definitely make their profits back, they won't just make insane margins at the expense of the common man. At the end of the day, the ordinary man benefits, that's what governance should be.

And if they leave, will you replace what is lost?

Exclusivity is king everywhere.

You can't force Sky Sports to sell contents to other broadcasters in the United Kingdom.

In brief, NBC wants Netflix, DStv and iroko to resell their original content made for Nigerian viewers to other broadcasters, and they are saying no.

If they end up doing so, that means you can access content from these people cheaply. On the other hand , it eats into their profits, hence their reluctance to resell

I am particular worried about DSTV.

As much as they are disliked, they have invested billions into the Nigerian entertainment sector.

They have done far more for Nollywood and the entertainment sector than the govt since 1999.

If they leave, the ripple effects would be Massive.

Buhari and his people should be careful.

Don't spoil what you didn't create.

The last time igbos had a say in the country's direction was in 1971.

From 1971-1999, igbos were recovering away from politics while northerners and the south west were rolling the country in shittt, trying to outsmart each other and killing themselves.

Use your brain. Did Igbos support MKO Abiola or not? Did Osita Chidoka as a student put an advert in a national daily or not? Even after the annulment of the election by IBB were yoruba elders not sneaking into Aso Rock to collect money in the middle of the night? Were Igbos like Olisa Agbakoba, Chris Anyanwu and Comrade Chima Ubani not getting locked up and tortured by the military. When NADECO people were hiding and couldnt organise was it Not Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu that gave them a safe meeting place in his home?

When MKO came back from exile and declared himself president at Epetedo where were the yoruba elders? Was it not Chief Bobo Nwosisi and Ralph Obioha standing with him when the going got tough?
