Nigeria Needs U.S. Help Against Boko Haram
Obama is right to transfer 12 attack planes to the country.

Nigerian authorities on Wednesday announced they had found at least one of the 276 schoolgirls infamously kidnapped by Boko Haram in 2014. It’s a good omen as President Muhammadu Buhari and his West African allies attempt to rout the region’s greatest terrorist menace.

Anti-Boko vigilantes assisting Nigerian armed forces discovered Amina Ali Nkeki, now age 19, while she was wandering the Sambisa forest in the country’s northeast Borno State. Ms. Nkeki was nursing a child. A suspected Boko fighter, likely Ms. Nkeki’s husband from a forced marriage, was with them. Nigerian forces have detained him for questioning.

The story highlights the valuable role played by anti-Boko volunteers and local hunters, who often know the terrain better than the army. Still, questions remain as to how Ms. Nkeki ended up in government hands, and the fact that so many innocents remain in captivity is a reminder that the war is far from over.

Ms. Nkeki told Nigerian authorities that most of the 276 girls kidnapped two years ago are still alive and imprisoned in Boko camps (57 escaped right away). Boko fighters have kidnapped more than 2,000 people since 2014, most of them women. Reports of forced marriage and rape are common among women and children who escape Boko captivity or are rescued.

Mr. Buhari, a Muslim ex-general who was elected last year on a pledge to wipe out Boko, has reversed the group’s momentum by taking the fight to the Islamists. He has reshuffled the military brass, increased use of heavy artillery and improved strategic coordination with Nigeria’s neighbors—Cameroon, Chad and Niger—all of whom are also threatened by Boko.


A counterinsurgency on this scale takes time and enormous military resources, and for every village recaptured there is a fresh suicide bombing or assault on a military outpost. Boko Haram is enhancing its cooperation with Islamic State, and it may be dispatching fighters from Nigeria to fight for the so-called caliphate’s Libyan “province,” according to U.S. officials.

The Obama Administration wants to transfer up to 12 Super Tucano attack planes to the Nigerian armed forces in support of the anti-Boko fight. The U.S. anti-antiterror lobby and Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont are gearing up to block the sale, citing the country’s human-rights record.

That’s a mistake. Nigeria is a functioning democracy that recently completed a peaceful power transition. It is fighting bravely to face down Africa’s most vicious terror outfit. Hashtag campaigns to #BringBackOurGirls may make Western liberals feel good about themselves, but that goal can’t be accomplished without the requisite means: #SuperTucano.

Over 200 students of the Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State, were seized two years ago and have not been traced or found.

UPDATE ON OPERATION CRACKDOWN: TROOPS CLEAR NJIMIA CAMP IN SAMBISA FOREST
In continuation with the special clearance and rescue operations otherwise known as Operation CRACKDOWN, within the Sambisa forest, troops of 7 Division have yesterday Tuesday, 17th May 2016, cleared Boko Haram terrorists out of their Njimia camp within Sambisa forest.
While advancing earlier in the morning on the same day, the troops also cleared Boko Haram terrorists camps at Alafa, where they encountered heavy resistance from Boko Haram terrorists and killed 15 of them.
The troops continued their advance through Alafa Main, Alafa Extension and Alafa Yaga-yaga, where they cleared remnants of the Boko Haram terrorists hibernating there before arriving at their main objective, Njimia.
Apart from destroying the camps, the troops rescued 41 hostages who were mostly women and children. The troops also recovered 2 Dane Guns, several vehicles, motorcycles and bicycles belonging to the terrorists.
One significant aspect of this feat today was the combination of ground forces assault, Nigerian Air Force Jets provision for combat air support and monitoring of the operation directly by the Acting General Officer Commanding 7 Division, Brigadier General Victor Ezugwu on board Air Force reconnaissance aircraft.
It is gratifying to note that no casualty was recorded by own troops through the conduct of this operation.

The Tucano news is great. whether basic or advanced it adds to the overworked fleet of alfa jets we have today in the area of close air support and other ground attack functions.

However the one wey de pain me since the boko haram crises start is the plenty verbal reference to self reliance with minimal material contribution towards it.
All of these platforms will be meaningless without basic spares, and basic munitions. At the height of the Boko haram advances in 2013/2014, there was a long period when we ran out of bombs, rockets etc for our choppers and jets and of course our good friends USA made it impossible for us to source replenishments.
Pilots would go on patrol, see BH massing for attacks and they could only muster a few strafing runs before they would run out of ammunition. BH soon understood and would freeze for the few minutes before the jets ran out of ammo and continue their advance once the jet ran out of fuel.

For me we must invest in ability to produce basic bombs and rockets, artillery shells etc. The technology behind these things have not changed significantly since WW2. Why are we making no palpable efforts to advance in these areas?

To be honest it is even shameful that we have to import armed trainer aircraft at this point, almost 30 years after our successful experiments with the Nigerian designed and assembled air Beetle. If we were serious how come we have not built on that successful experiment and upgraded it?? Don't be surprised that we will be scrambling to import APCs in 10 years time, while our locally designed and assembled Igirigi APC is abandoned (Infact talk true when last did you see or hear about it in the last 1 year).

Why are we not able to earmark even 10% of our total defense procurement budget for local arms industry development How do we plan to grow without self sufficiency??

Conflict is brewing in the Niger Delta now, i can see us learning the same painful lessons all over again.

First MRAPs Arrive in Egypt

AMMAN, Jordan — The first shipment of mine-resistant, ambush-protected vehicles (MRAP) from the US has been delivered to the Egyptian military, according to the US Embassy in Egypt.

While the number of vehicles delivered was not stated, it is the first round of MRAPs out of 762 the US plan to send to Egypt.

According to the embassy, “this new capability will be used to combat terrorism and promote stability in the region.”

And Maj. Gen. Charles Hooper, a senior defense official at the US Embassy in Egypt, said: “The delivery of these MRAPs to Egypt provides a crucial capability needed during these times of regional instability and is part of the continuing strong relationship between the US and Egypt.”

The US is giving Egypt the MRAPs free of charge as part of the Pentagon’s Excess Defense Articles grant program.

The US Army needs less MRAPs as it attempts to wind down its operations in Afghanistan. MRAPs were rapidly developed to protect troops from improvised explosive device blasts in the country.

While Egypt is receiving that equipment for free, the country’s safety and security market is “flourishing,” Cherine Maher, the head of regional safety and security at the US Embassy in Jordan, said May 10 at SOFEX, a special operations exhibition in Amman. Egypt’s defense market is expected to grow by 15 to 20 percent during the next few years, she said.

“Egypt is facing a lot of challenges, especially in terms of border control and whether it’s from the west or the east or the north or the south, so the main project that is going on is border and perimeter control,” Maher said, which means the country really wants bomb detection, jammers and improvised explosive device diffusers.

A Nigerian in far away North America has defied all odds to graduate atop his class following an excellent array of results.


Ifo Ikede

A Nigerian man identified as Ifo Ikede couldn't contain his excitement and character after graduating from University of Prince Edward Island in Canada with first class in Computer Science despite being discouraged by his lecturer.

He gave this salute during his graduation ceremony to celebrate his success. Congrats to him!

His friend, Nick Falvo shared the good news on his Facebook page.

He wrote;

"This is my friend Ifo Ikede giving the Black Power salute as he graduated from the University of Prince Edward Island on Saturday. A professor once told him: "You don't have the mental capacity to understand computer science.

"He graduated with First Class Honours in Computer Science"

Note that the area where the fight is going on now is not a civilian area.
These areas are deep in sambisa forest which is purely boko haram controlled.
Sambisa forest was a former game reserve about the size of wales+ scotland, taken over by BHTs, heavily mined and booby trapped
Most of the women and children have been indoctrinated, impregnanted and converted to boko haram suicide bombers or couriers
The military usuually rescues these people and takes them back to IDP camps in rear bases in borno or yobe states.
Humanitarian actors such as medecins sans frontieres, icrc, red cross are active in these camps
The government also runs de-radicalization centres for those indoctrinated as well

The houses and food have to be burnt down to deny BHT access to logistics as well as from preventing them from using it as booby traps and logistics bases
The women and children have been evacuated anyway.
At the last count i believe the military confirmed up to 12,000 women and children rescued...

I've just gone through comments on this issue here on NL and on facebook, the ridiculous part of this development is that it's actually ipob igbos mainly who are rejoicing over these reports of economic sabotage, not even the niger deltans... Ipob igbos are now even screaming 'our oil' more than the niger deltans themselves. Wonderful!.... Anything to bring down the zoo is a welcome development to some of these people. Now as the nation falls into darkness and despair, I'm yet to unseratamd how the blackout will affect the buhari whom they hate.
