Nigerian army commander: only weeks left for Boko Haram

Nigeria's army expects to seize Boko Haram's last few strongholds in the northeast over the next few weeks, the commander in charge of crushing the jihadist group's seven-year insurgency said on Wednesday.

The army missed a December deadline set by President Muhammadu Buhari to wipe out the group, which wants to set up an Islamic caliphate in the area around Lake Chad, but has retaken most of its territory - at one point the size of Belgium.

Major General Lucky Irabor, commander of the operation, said the jihadists were now holed up in a few pockets of the Sambisa forest - where more than 200 girls kidnapped from the town of Chibok in 2014 are believed to be held - and two areas near Lake Chad and would be flushed out "within weeks".

Despite the set-backs, Boko Haram still manages to stage regular suicide bombings in Nigeria and neighboring Chad, Niger and Cameroon. Since 2009, more than 15,000 people have been killed, 2.3 million displaced and the local economy decimated.

"Almost all of the locations held by the Boko Haram terrorists have been reclaimed. We are talking only of a few villages and towns," Irabor said in an interview at his base in Maiduguri in Borno state, birth place of the insurgency.

Much of the success is down to better military cooperation with Nigeria's neighbors, especially Chad, whose forces have been attacking Boko Haram fighters fleeing across the border.

"There are joint operations. My commanders have an exchange with local commanders across the borders. Because of the collaborations we've had Boko Haram has been boxed in and in a few weeks you will hear good news," he said.

He said the jihadists, who pledged loyalty to Islamic State last year, were still controlling Abadan and Malafatori, two towns near Lake Chad, apart from their main base in the Sambisa forest, south of Maidguri.

The army was planning a new push into Sambisa after abandoning an attempt due to torrential rain, he said.

"Earlier on this year we had a major operation in the Sambisa," he said. "Gains were made but unfortunately the weather conditions became such that we to pull out waiting for more favorable conditions."

He said the army had rescued some 20,000 people from Boko Haram, a fraction of the 2.2 million UNICEF said last week remained trapped in the region around Lake Chad.

LEADER "WOUNDED"

Irabor's base on the outskirts of Maiduguri, a sprawling military complex with rows of residential blocks for officers, is the most visible sign of a shake-up introduced by Buhari, a former military ruler.

Under his predecessor, Goodluck Jonathan, the army had a reputation for being poorly equipped and running away in the face of Boko Haram assaults.

Britain and other countries have recently increased military assistance, and two Westerners wearing flat jackets could be seen jogging in the compound.

U.S. officials told Reuters in May that Washington, which blocked arms sales under Jonathan amid concerns about rights abuses, wants to sell up to 12 A-29 Super Tucano light attack aircraft to Nigeria although Congress needs to approve the deal.

Irabor has set up a human rights desk to address the issue.

"The code of conduct is quite clear. Human rights issues are taken quite seriously," he said.

He said that Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau had recently been wounded, but backed off an Air Force statement this month suggesting he had been killed in an airstrike.

"Shekau was wounded. That's what I can confirm, but as to whether he is dead that I cannot at the moment confirm."

Boko Haram, which normally communicates via video or audio clips posted on the Internet, has said nothing since the Aug. 24 Air Force statement about Shekau being hurt.

In fact this video stuff and picture issues, i was never aware of it until a friend of mine who received a whatsapp videolink and pix from someone in Nigeria got very annoyed at the person in 9ja for sending those types of pix.

I didn't really understand why he was so annoyed until he flagged the issue of police and pornographic materials and the fact that he could go to jail just for receiving the videos. He told me about some mates who got jailed for stuff they knew nothing about sef.

U.K is an extremely isolating society and i know Nigerians who are just very expressive and happy to see other Nigerians.
They often get into your physical space and are quite tactile.
I don't know how that counts as something you need to destroy a doctors career for @tearoses

Anyway, personally i steer away from Nigerians because of things like this. Even when the doctor might be trying to be helpful, Nigerians misjudge the whole situation. I would advise any doctors in the U.K to be extremely careful of other Nigerians. They bring u everything bad and nothing good.
That's why the asian community progresses while the Blacks and Nigerians especially are stuck with in-fighting in the U.K.

The other issue which i do not understand is:
Why would the police just target him for seizure of his phone without a warrant?
Even if they found anything incriminating, without a warrant initially, it should be inadmissible, no?? Any U,K lawyers in the house with some advice on this?

There are situations where people you meet via whatsapp or blackberry especially from Nigeria, send you all sorts of pictures.
Personally, i delete them immediately.

Niger delta topography is marshy with creeks and rain forest vegetation.
I am extremely skeptical that the scorpion tanks are of any benefit in this topography.
The scorpions can be used effectively in the middle belt against fulani terrorist herdsmen(no IEDs there) and in the North east for base defense and light reconnaissance; even in areas with IEDs.

What I can deduce from this is that dialogue alone can't solve Niger delta crisis since Yaradu and GEJ tried it before and we still came back to square 1 after spending billions to pamper them for almost 8 years. There is a big difference between people fighting for their rights and people trying to disrupt government for selfish interest/political gains. I don't pray for escalation of the war but when things get unbearable you can't blame the government.

Every part of Nigeria was neglected by government not the Niger delta alone. The only thing that makes us different is how we respond to government's negligence.

Controlled violence often only works well if there is a plan for negotiation at the end.

Baba, I think the government have tried to dialogue with this NDA but they feel they are untouchable. Dialogue is what we all want but since it's not making any headway I think it's proper for the military to prepare for action.

Dialogue didn't solve Ogun/Lagos militant problem, dialogue didn't solve herdsmen problem, dialogue didn't solve boko haram crisis. Instead, military did the needful and we are all happy about the out outcome of the operations.
So how sure are you that dialogue will solve Niger delta crisis when they keep making the government look like a fool. I think it's better we give the military opportunity to show the NDA what they have for them too.

FG imports Russian war helicopters, UAVs from Dubai

The Federal Government is making a comprehensive arrangement to respond to the attacks on oil installations in the Niger Delta region through the importation of sophisticated military hardware.

A top military source said on Saturday that the Defence authorities had completed arrangements to bring in latest Unmanned Aerial Vehicles to boost the planned military operation in the oil-rich region.

It was gathered that the Federal Government has ordered for the Yahbon/20UAVs from Dubai, the United Arab Emirates.



It was further learnt that the Yahbon/20UAVs were being procured to replace the Chinese CH-3A UAV in the arsenal of the military.

It was stated that the military would rely heavily on the Yahbon/20 UAV which carries four missiles on its wings for the success of the planned operation.

Investigation revealed that some of the new UAVs are billed to arrive the country November, 2016 while the others are expected next year.

It was further learnt that the Federal Government is also purchasing MI35M helicopters from Russia to prepare the Nigerian Air Force to monitor and combat those behind the destruction of oil and gas installations in the Niger Delta.

The MI35M is the latest and more sophisticated version of the MI35 which is one of the attack helicopters of the NAF.

The source said that three of the MI35M attack helicopters are expected to come into the country from Russia in November.

It was learnt that the Defence authorities made an arrangement with the Russians to purchase 15 of the modern attack helicopters for the planned aerial operation in the South-South.

It was gathered that the Russians had also trained 33 personnel of the Nigerian Air Force on how to fly and handle the ‘all-weather helicopters’ which could operate night and day.

It was learnt that those who went for the training in Russia arrived in the country three weeks ago.

It was also learnt that the acceptance flight for the helicopters was carried out late July.

The source said, “The Federal Government is not sleeping over the attacks on oil installations in the Niger Delta. Comprehensive steps are being taken on this disturbing development.

“The government is importing the Yahbon/20 UAV from Dubai. The unique thing about this drone is that it carries four missiles on its wings and it is quite effective. Very soon, Nigerians would see the difference.

“The latest drone will replace the Chinese CH-3A UAV which was found to be problematic in some ways. Apart from that, the military is also acquiring MI35M from the Russians. This is the latest version of the MI35 being used by the NAF.

“The difference is that this particular one is more sophisticated, it is all-weather and it has night capability which means that it can operate both day and night.

“Three of them will arrive the country in November this year; the plan is to bring the remaining 12 over the years.

“Some of the personnel of the NAF who went for the training on the use of the aircraft returned to the country three weeks ago. Also, the acceptance flight was done three weeks ago.”

When our correspondent contacted the Acting Director, Defence Information, Brig. Gen. Rabe Abubakar, for his comment on the story, he said that he did not have any information on the purchase of the military hardware.

“I don’t have that information,” he said.

Also, the Director of Information and Public Relations of the Nigerian Air Force, Group. Capt. Ayodeje Famuyiwa, said that while there were plans to acquire new platforms in the Air Force, he did not have any such detail.

The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, said while commissioning the third weaponised Alpha Jet of the NAF at the 99 Air Combat Training Group, Kainji, Niger State, on Friday, that the planned operation in the Niger Delta would require additional platforms.

He said efforts were being made to put together what was required for the planned operation, adding that the exercise would require the acquisition of additional platforms which was at the final stage of planning

“The exercise I am talking about will require additional platforms. They are now in the planning stage, very soon we will conclude that plan,” he said.

NAF COMMENCES AERIAL PATROL OF ABUJA-KADUNA HIGHWAY AND ENVIRONS
The Nigerian Air Force today commences aerial patrol of the Abuja-Kaduna Highway, including Minna and environs. The joint patrol, incorporating surface elements from the Nigerian Army, Police and Federal Road Safety Commission, is aimed at checkmating criminal activities along major highways within the North West which of recent has witnessed increased cases of criminalities such as cattle rustling, kidnapping and armed robbery. Other major routes covered by the aerial patrol include the Abuja metropolis, Kaduna-Birnin Gwari road, Kaduna-Zaria-Kano road and the Falgore Forest. Aside undertaking aerial surveillance, the NAF is also providing ground troops that would operate alongside the surface elements.
Flagging-off the aerial patrol today in Abuja, the Air Officer Commanding Training Kaduna, Air Vice Marshal Nurudeen Balogun said that “the NAF will be providing real time intelligence from the air, and reinforcement where necessary, to aid the operation of the surface elements”.

New Boko Haram leader, Al-Barnawi accuses Shekau of corruption, unjustifiable killing of Muslims

New Boko Haram leader, Musab Al-Barnawi, Friday released a long audio tape in which he accused Shekau of massive corruption and unjustifiable killings of Muslims.
Al-Barnawi, who claimed to be a founding member of the bloody group, alleged that Shekau favoured only himself and his family.

He lamented that Shekau had been busy killing Muslims instead of seeking ways to attack churches and security formations.


He accused Shekau of abandoning the path set by the group’s founder, Mohammed Yusuf.

The new leader recalled that before he was captured and murdered in 2009, Yusuf usually subjected his Friday sermons to vetting by his top aides.

He challenged Shekau to confront his faction and risk his life.

He, however, said if Shekau repents, he will be accepted back in the fold.


Al-Barnawi’S audio tape reads in part, “[Shekau] was boasting that if we attempt to escape from his empire, his men will kill us. He is a liar.

“I am not the only one that left, but eight of us left, all kitchen cabinet members. And right now two other top members are on the way to join us.

“We are all here. The issue of Islam is not personal, there is no sentiment in Islam, and that is why we are here.

“Nobody can dare us or stop us from it, no matter how he brags. Here we are on our own. Can’t you see how we left your empire?

“We left women and everything and just left with guns on our shoulders. We would have crushed anyone that stood on our way.

“We said we would not touch anyone but just go on our way to our religion. We will fight for the cause of Allah and work against personalising Jihad and against unjustifiable killings and shedding of blood.

“We are out because you came out with your own cassette. We want our people to know proper Islam because Allah in the Quran forbids killings without justification.

“Just like Allah gave us power to kill infidels, there are those he said we shouldn’t kill without reason.

“In the Quran, Allah forbade Muslims from killing one another…and he also taught against killing in secret. If it is serious punishment, it must be public for people to know and witness it.

“But once you see killings in secret, there is something fishy and this is what we noticed with Shekau. What he is doing is not Islam.

“He said we should follow him and we agreed, but we later realized it is another thing and we said no. We have to stick to the Quran and what Allah said, not [follow] someone’s waywardness.

“We have vowed to say the truth. If we will be killed, let us be killed. If we will be eaten, let us be eaten up and if we will be roasted, let us be roasted.

“We will not leave our fellow brothers in the dark; this message of mine will get to Sambisa Forest. It will get into Shekau’s house. We have agents that will convey the message no matter how he dislikes it.

“Almighty Allah is against killings of Muslims. Allah is saying better heaven and earth fall than innocent soul of a Muslim, but you have Shekau who likes killing our own people.

“He is always boasting that he will kill, he will kill. Okay, continue to kill, you will also be killed. Who will dwell here forever? Everybody will die. You will also die some day.

“And there is no one that will die without reaching his day of death. You can see we are here alive, all of us here sitting. Anyone that Allah did not kill you cannot kill him. The same way, you cannot stop anyone Allah willed his death.

“That is why when someone boasts to kill a man, the man asks him, ‘Why are you in a haste?’ The man says, ‘If my time has come, you will not stop me from going.’ There are several verses that forbid killing of a fellow Muslim unjustifiably.

“Our vow that we will practice Islam is real. That is why we left our parents, homes, our cars and everything and came to this forest. How can we then agree to see you bringing strange ideologies?

“In one of our Shura meetings, someone asked Shekau how he felt about Muslims running away from their own land to the land of the infidels for their own safety.

“Shekau said [the Muslims] are also infidels and should be killed like the infidels. These people are not infidels, they are Muslims running for their lives, and he insisted that they are infidels and should be killed.

Is it just me or is anyone else enjoying the cross fire between Shekau and al Barnawi? It gives me confidence that Nigerian intel is deep within BH ranks. I remember a time when Col. SK Usman gave a release about Shekau BGs killing some top members who wanted to abscond. The whole jigsaw is now taking shape.

Also, Shekau has been confirmed to be inside Sambisa still. His days are numbered

RAF Regiment supports Nigerian Forces in counter – terror training

Personnel from the Royal Air Force Regiment’s No 5 Force Protection Wing (5 FP Wg) recently returned from Nigeria, where they helped train the Nigerian Air Force to protect its personnel and aircraft involved in counter-insurgency fighting. A team from 5 FP Wg and 51 Squadron RAF Regiment, usually based at RAF Lossiemouth in Moray, deployed to Nigeria to deliver bespoke military training at the request of the British Military Advisory and Training Team (BMATT) in Nigeria

Working with the RAF Force Protection Centre at RAF Honington, 5 FP Wg designed a programme to train 100 newly qualified airmen and 8 officers of the Nigerian Air Force Regiment to defend Nigerian Air Force forward operating bases involved in the fight against insurgent activity in Nigeria. RAF Regiment trainers also mentored their Nigerian counterparts at the Nigerian Air Force Ground Training Centre so that they can replicate the RAF Regiment’s training, and to enhance their own training capability for the future.

Wing Commander John Rees, Officer Commanding 5 FP Wg, led the RAF Regiment’s training team. He said: “We had a great, traditional welcome from the Nigerian staff and Air Force personnel when we arrived at the base. Everyone was very accommodating – helping us to settle in to our facilities and getting the training areas prepared.

“The senior Nigerian Air Force officers were fully committed and supportive of us as we began to deliver this busy and exciting programme of training. As well drawing on our expertise and experiences from recent combat operations to provide this training, we were able to learn from the Nigerian Air Force personnel as they combat terrorist threats.”

Training happened in three phases. During the Foundation training package, RAF Regiment instructors worked to confirm and enhance the Nigerian Air Force Regiment’s life-saving ‘ground-sign awareness skills’. During this phase, Nigerian Air Force Regiment officers were given focused training on planning for force protection operations.

The next phase included minefield extraction training, vehicle and personnel searches and the ability to locate and react to improvised explosive device strikes and indirect fire attacks. RAF Regiment instructors also refreshed their counterparts’ navigation skills and delivered battlefield exercises and training. Nigerian personnel also went through exercises to enhance the ‘soft skills’ needed by Nigerian Air Force Regiment teams working among villages on counter-insurgency operations.

The final phase of training included a physically and mentally demanding four-day exercise, based on all the training the Nigerians had received to date. Wing Commander Rees said: “The exercise was as realistic as we could make it to test and confirm the training we were able to provide to the Nigerian Air Force through the British Military Advisory Training Team.

“We’re grateful for the support provided by the Nigerian Air Force in enabling us to make the most of the short term training task. Our RAF Force Protection instructors have provided a professional and challenging bespoke training package that has drawn on the RAF Regiment’s operational experiences. We have worked closely with the Nigerian Air Force to enhance the counter-insurgency skills needed to combat terrorists that threaten this, and neighboring countries.”

IS appoints new West Africa leader

The so-called Islamic State (IS) jihadist group has announced a new leader for its West African branch, popularly known as Boko Haram.

The latest issue of an IS magazine featured what it called its first interview with Abu Musab al-Barnawi, who replaces the eccentric Abubakar Shekau.

In a video clip released in January 2015, Mr al-Barnawi described himself as the spokesman for Boko Haram. This was before the Nigeria-based jihadist group pledged allegiance to IS.

Now IS says he has replaced Mr Shekau, who has not made a verified appearance in any video since August 2015.

We should extend their operation another ten years, get some PGM capability and buy more from German Air force stocks. We have developed world leading core competency on this Aircraft and many European Airforces are still using them. It is the only fast mission time COIN aircraft we have now and wearn have mastered quick accurate targeting with data coming from ISR aircraft. How many African countries do you think can do this now?.
Super Tucanoes can do its own ISR and attack on its own but the aircraft is slower and the weapons on board lighter.

I still don't get how the Nigerian armed forces plan operations.

An ISR surveys and identifies an area of interest with militants

NAF sends air sorties based on actionable intelligence to take out these positions.

BUT.....

How about the follow up??

Shouldn't this be a tri-service operation?

Shouldn't the navy and army cordoned off the area before hand?

Shouldn't special operations teams be dropped into the area to attack residual forces that were not killed in the initial sorties.

Shouldn't those special operations teams also not be canvassing for intelligence for financiers and HVTs.

Hence shouldn't the DSS be involved in this operation as well

It really baffles me how these operations are planned
