Oga Chkil, do you have any declassified materials on how algeria fought the counter-insurgency wars of the 90's?

I find it truly mesmerizing how algeria managed to fight that war against ALL odds.

The lessons of the war should be taught in Nigerian defence academies and staff colleges.

It mirrors the same thing Nigeria went through at the hands of so-called allies in the west.

I still believe Nigeria has a lot to learn from Algeria in COIN wars.

Instead of having americans teach Nigerian soldiers how to march in straight lines, we should be sending battalion strengths for COIN training in Algerian deserts...

no when Algeria was drowning in the bath of terrorist blood we was under embargo from 1990 to 2002 , our weapons was old, hardly maintained and obsolet, 80th sovietics weapons like the libya weapons and khaddafi when they lift the embargo on them , 15 years in military technology it's a delay century ,

so it was an urgency for algeria to replace it's old equipment and upgrade what was in service , if we see algerian equipement mig 25/ sukhoi 24/ mig 29 even if they were upgraded they are at end of life , they will be removed from service within the next 10 years maximum , the same for many equipment in navy or ground army

+ algeria havnt the same geopolitics like nigeria we have NATO in front and some historic clash with france , they like to interfere in the democracy of neighboors ( like they did in libya) .

Now that they know that Nigeria has almost cleared up boko haram deep inside Sambisa forest, the west is falling over each other to give assistance to the Nigerian military.

UK PLEDGES GREATER SUPPORT TO NIGERIAN ARMED FORCES
The United Kingdom has restated her commitment to assist Nigeria in her quest to totally eradicate the threat posed by the Boko Haram Terrorists in the North East of Nigeria as well as partnering with relevant agencies to rehabilitate the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) who were victims of terrorists attack.
This was jointly stated by the Director General for the British Foreign and Commonwealth Defence Intelligence, Ms Sarah Macintosh and Rear Admiral Simon Ancona, the British Assistant Chief of Defence Staff in Defence Engagement when they led a 5 man delegation to the Defence Headquarters Abuja.
In her opening remark, Ms Macintosh applauded the commitment of the Nigerian Armed Forces in decimating the dreaded Boko Haram Terrorists and seek for closer military ties in the area of security for the IDPs and cooperation to provide complementary support to the Nigerian Government relief efforts to ameliorate the humanitarian challenges in the various IDPs camps across the country.
Similarly, Rear Admiral Ancona expressed the British desire to assist the regional Multi National Joint Task Force (MNJTF) in the military campaign against Boko Haram and contribute to the establishment of a Multi National Joint Task Force coordination centre. He further stated that the British Government had concluded plans to send some specialists to assist in tackling the humanitarian crisis occasioned by the insurgency in the North East of Nigeria. The British delegation also acknowledged the tremendous efforts of the military in not only winning the war against insurgents but also “winning the peace” in the country.
In his response, the Chief of Defence Staff, (CDS) General Gabriel Abayomi Olonisakin thanked the UK delegation for the visit and solicited for a more fruitful cooperation with the British government. He also briefed the delegation on the ongoing efforts by the military to de-radicalise the youths in the North East who were hitherto susceptible to the radical Islamic group, Boko Haram. The CDS, who was represented by the Chief of Policy and Plans, Defence Headquarters, Air Vice Marshal BC Saidu, also explained the transitional arrangements to resettle the IDPs and noted that the greatest military challenge hampering the fight against the Boko Haram Terrorist is that of inadequate equipments and lack of cooperation from some arms vendors.
Others in the entourage of the British Director General for Foreign and Commonwealth Defence were the British Defence Attache to Nigeria and two senior diplomats from the UK embassy, while some principal Staff Officers from the Defence Headquarters were at hand to receive them. Please recall that the troops were exploiting aftermath of the attack by Boko Haram terrorists on their location last night in Sambisa forest despite the climatic conditions

Please be informed that 8 more Boko Haram terrorists dead bodies were found this morning in addition to other recoveries made. Therefore, attached here are more photographs of the recoveries that include vehicles, arms and ammunitions.
In a related development, on 8th May 2016, at about 10.30pm, 3 Boko Haram terrorists went to Puchi village to tax the community. On received of information, troops of 7 Division mobilized in conjunction with some Civilian JTF to the area.
On arrival, they found out that the residents have apprehended 2 of the terrorists and lynched them, while the third one narrowly escaped according to reports.
The troops recovered 1 AK-47 rifle, 1 rifle magazine and 8 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition and a Dane Gun.

UPDATE ON OPERATION LAFIYA DOLE
Troops of 26 and 223, Battalions, Army Headquarters Strike Group and Armed Forces Special Forces have continued offensive operations in furtherance of Operation CRACKDOWN. The troops have cleared remnants of Boko Haram in Izza and Njima general area. Although they did not encounter any Boko Haram terrorists, there were noticeable fresh footprints, motorcycle and bicycle tyre marks in the seemingly abandoned places.
However, the troops came across and recovered 8 abandoned vehicles belonging to Boko Haram terrorists. The advancing troops also cleared all Boko Haram terrorists’ hideouts along the way including their camps at Bula Buba and its environs where they recovered 1 Hilux, 1 Canter truck, 15 AK-47 rifle magazines, a 60mm High Explosive Bomb, 200 G3 rifle magazines, 3 Browning Machine Gun tripod stands and a 60mm mortar bipod stand. Other recoveries include several metal links of 7.62mm (NATO) and 12.mm ammunitions.
In their area of operations, troops of 121 Task Force Battalion today, intercepted 35 civilians comprising 6 men, 7 women, 7 males minors and 15 minor females who claimed to be coming from Balaganje village. However, preliminary investigation reveals that they had been living in Balaganje as captives by Boko Haram terrorists who threatened to kill them if they attempt to escape. They are being investigated further.
In a related development, quite a number of Boko Haram terrorists have continued to surrender. Yesterday, out of 16 male adults that came along with their families to troop’s from Balazala and Ahamdaga Makaranta villages in the Dure district, 7 of them confessed to be Boko Haram terrorist members.
However, on proper interrogation, the suspects confirmed to be Boko Haram terrorists with some of them having specialized trade and status. Three of them were Ameers (leaders) in the Boko Haram terrorist group’s hierarchy; for instance, Hamidu Buba was found to be the Ameer (leader) of tailors, while Musa Buba is Ameer of mechanics and Ali Idrissa, an Ameer of carpenters. The others confessed to be “Rijal” (fighters) adding that they have participated in various Boko Haram attacks on so many villages and towns. They further stated that the ongoing crackdown operation is really taking its toll on them as they can barely survive.
As a matter of fact, they confessed that they were all fed up with the situation which has become worse as a result of Operation CRACKDOWN. They also stated that the Boko Haram terrorists have ran out of food and they now survive on roots and unripe mangoes. They also said 2 of their members sent for food were killed at Frigi crossing point some days earlier by troops, (you may recall that we reported the military’s ambush at the crossing point).
The troops of 122 Task Force Battalion injunction with some elements of 26 Task Force Brigade on receipt of information from some escapees, embarked a clearance patrol to Fadagwe Muni, along Yamtake-Gwoza road. On sighting the troops, the suspected Boko Haram terrorists fled and left behind an abducted 16 year old female cripple. The terrorists also abandoned large stock of grains stored in underground pit. Other items recovered include grinding machine, 2 tricycles and 1 photographs printer. The troops nevertheless pursued the fleeing insurgents and killed some of them.
Similarly, troops of 121 Task Force Battalion also conducted clearance operation at Kadera Dam and Anguwar Fulani, while troops of 192 Battalion that conducted similar operation to Guduf, Nagadio, Duma and Kusarha. The Boko Haram terrorists ran to the top of the mountains and they were engaged heavy mortar fire.
The 7 Division and its supporting elements has also intensified the clearance and rescue operations deep inside Sambisa forest. On Friday, they had encounter with Boko Haram terrorists at Alafa in which they cleared all the terrorists hibernating there.
The troops in various axis have continued to exploit further till they accomplish the mission of Operation CRACKDOWN.
In a related development, vigilant 7 Division Garrison, have arrested 2 suspected Boko Haram terrorists fuel suppliers with 2 Golf Volkswagen vehicles with registration numbers Borno MAG-112XA and Borno AA739-KBG.They were arrested at NNPC Mega Filling Station, along Damboa Road, Maiduguri at 2.00pm today, Friday, 5th May 2016.
The two suspected Boko Haram terrorists modified the booth of their cars with constructed tanks to take in more fuel for their accomplices hiding in the forests. One of the reconstructed tanks contained150 litres of petrol, while the other was empty.
Both suspects have been handed over to the Joint Intelligent Centre for further interrogation.

Nigerian troops block insurgents’ movement in, out of Sambisa forest — Buratai
The Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, on Wednesday said ground troops had blocked movement of Boko Haram terrorists in and out of Sambisa forest.
Buratai stated this while fielding questions from journalists shortly after monitoring troops’ deployment at Banki junction in Borno.
He said that ongoing “Operation Crack Down’’ had been successful as the troops were making steady progress in dismantling the remaining Boko Haram hideouts in Sambisa.
“The troops are doing very well; they had some challenges in terms of encounters with the terrorists in the theatre but that is being tackled.
“The troops are forming a blocking force to prevent the terrorists from moving into Sambisa or coming out of the area.
“I am here to see the ground forces and how they are doing; so far so good, but there is tremendous operation going on presently inside the main Sambisa forest,’’ he said.
He also said that he was at Banki to confirm the movement of troops and equipment and to observe the situation in the “theatre’’.
Mr. Buratai said the location of troops at Banki junction was significant in the military operations to restrict movement of the insurgents from outside the country through Cameroon or Chad.

“We were together with the Chief of Defence Staff and the Chief of Air Staff in Maiduguri where the theatre commander briefed us on the ongoing operation crack down.
“This Banki junction is a major route that links the north to the south and is also bordering Cameroon; it is also a link to Chad Republic.
“It is a major route which the Boko Haram insurgents have been using to move between the Sambisa forest and the northern part of the country, up to the Lake Chad waters.
“So, it is an important location which has tactical, strategic as well as operational significance to what we are doing in this region,’’ he said.
The army chief said that ground troops supported by Nigerian Air Force fighter jets would continue to hit the forest until the insurgents were eventually cleared.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the Chief of Defence Staff, Gabriel Olonisakin, the Army and Air Force chiefs met behind closed doors in Maiduguri on Monday to appraise the Sambisa operation.
At the end of the meeting, Mr. Olonisakin, a general, briefed journalists and expressed satisfaction with the operation.

CDS SEEKS BI-LATERAL COOPERATION WITH NIGER AND CAMEROUN
In an effort to strengthen the existing bi-lateral cooperation with Nigeria’s neighbours, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Gabriel Olonisakin has embarked on official trips to Niger Republic and Republic of Cameroun where he met with the top Government functionaries of the two countries
In Niger Republic, General Olonisakin met with the President of the country, Mahamadou Issoufou as well as the Chief of Defence Staff, General Seyni Garba where discussion on issues that concern the two friendly countries were highlighted. General Olonisakin thanked the Niger President for the role the country is playing in counterterrorism operations in Lake Chad Basin and the country’s role in the formation of Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF).
Nigeria’s CDS expressed delight that Boko Haram has been significantly decimated, a feat which called for stronger ties between Nigeria and its neighbours to ensure that no safe haven is provided for the retreating Boko Haram terrorists in the sub-region. To this end, General Olonisakin solicited for improved intelligence gathering and sharing, air asset operations and counter-Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) operations within the Lake Chad Basin countries and across ECOWAS States.
While in Cameroun, Nigeria’s CDS was received by the Camerounian Honorable Minister of Defence, Edgard Allain Mebe Ngo'o and the country’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Rene-Claude Meka where similar discussion, as in Niger Republic, occurred. One of the highlights of the discussion in Cameroun however, was in the area of stronger cooperation in maritime environment, especially in the Gulf of Guinea, to tackle the incessant case of bunkering, oil theft and piracy. General Olonisakin has since returned to Nigeria.
