Nigeria, we hail thee, Our own dear native land, Though tribe and tongue may differ, In brotherhood, we stand, Nigerians all, and proud to serve Our sovereign Motherland. Our flag shall be a symbol That truth and justice reign, In peace or battle honour’d, And this we count as gain, To hand on to our children A banner without stain. O God of all creation, Grant this our one request, Help us to build a nation Where no man is oppressed, And so with peace and plenty Nigeria may be blessed. |
North Korea has adopted a new strategy to contend with its southern neighbor: sending floating bags of trash containing “filth” across the border, carried by massive balloons. The South Korean military began noticing “large amounts of balloons” arriving from the North starting Tuesday night, detecting more than 150 as of Wednesday morning, according to the country’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS). Photos released by the JCS show plastic bags carried by two giant balloons, with some broken packages spilling scraps of plastic, sheets of paper, and what appears to be dirt onto roads and sidewalks. The balloons so far contain “filth and garbage” and are being analyzed by government agencies, said the JCS, adding that the military was cooperating with the United Nations Command. https://edition.cnn.com/2024/05/29/asia/north-korea-trash-balloons-intl-hnk/index.html

BREAKING: Former President Obasanjo says President Tinubu’s policies important, but implemented wrongly Obasanjo’s assessment comes as Tinubu’s government launches festivities to commemorate his one-year anniversary. He focused on three administrative decisions: gasoline subsidies, exchange rates, and dealing with the military takeover in Niger Republic. According to his media adviser, Kehinde Akinyemi, who issued a statement in Abeokuta on Sunday, Obasanjo spoke at a Colloquium: “Nigeria’s Development: Navigating the Way Out of the Current Economic Crisis and Insecurity” delivered at the Paul Aje Colloquium (PAC) in Abuja. He berayed Tinubu’s government, saying “the present Administration has not found the right way to handle the economy to engender confidence and trust for investors to start trooping in.” Obasanjo said, “Today, the government has taken three decisions, two of which are necessary but wrongly implemented and have led to impoverization of the economy and of Nigerians. These are removal of subsidy, closing the gap between black market and official rates of exchange and the third is dealing with a military coup in Niger Republic. “The way forward is production and productivity which belief and trust in government leadership will engender. No shortcut to economic progress but hard work and sweat.” “Economy does not obey orders, not even military orders. I know that. If we get it right, in two years, we will begin to see the light beyond the tunnel. It requires a change of characteristics, attributes and attitude by the leadership at all levels to gain the confidence and trust of investors who have alternatives. He further said “Total Energy has gone to invest 6 billion dollars in Angola instead of Nigeria. If the truth must be stated, the present Administration has not found the right way to handle the economy to engender confidence and trust for investors to start trooping in. “They know us more than we know ourselves. And now they are laughing at us, not taking us seriously. We have to present ourselves in such a way that we will be taken seriously. If the existing investors are disinvesting and going out of our country, how do we persuade new investors to rush in. We can be serious if we choose to be but we need to change from transactional leadership in government to transformational and genuine servant leadership. “With change by us, the investors will give us the benefit of doubt, and security being taken care of on a sustainable long-term basis, they will start to test the water. With the right economic policies, attributes of integrity and honesty of purpose, all should be well with all hands on deck and the government becoming a catalyst for development, growth and progress. “Tinkering with the exchange rate is not the answer. The answer is consistency and continuity in policy to ensure stability and predictability. That way, we will be sure of incentivizing domestic and foreign investment. There must be honesty and transparency in government dealings and contracts and not lying with deception about these issues. When the government is seen as pursuing the right policy, the private sector will go for production and productivity,” he concluded. https://x.com/kc_journalist/status/1794822602055102914 |
PRESIDENT TINUBU INAUGURATES NEWLY RECONSTRUCTED APAPA-OWORONSHOKI-OJOTA EXPRESSWAY IN LAGOS President Bola Tinubu on Sunday inaugurated the newly reconstructed Apapa-Oworonshoki-Ojota-Oshodi Expressway, a 36.02km expressway connecting Nigeria's premier ports - Apapa and Tin Can Island - to larger parts of Lagos State. President Tinubu, who performed the symbolic unveiling of the plaque of the concrete-paved road at the Gbagada stretch, also virtually inaugurated the recently rehabilitated Third Mainland Bridge. Speaking at the inauguration of the projects, executed by the Federal Ministry of Works, the President, represented by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, said the Apapa-Oworonshoki-Ojota Expressway would enhance access to the ports, boost commercial activities, and spur economic development. Originally constructed between 1975 and 1978, the road had deteriorated significantly over the years, causing severe delays in the evacuation of goods from Apapa Wharf. The reconstruction of the road was executed in four sections, using Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement (CRCP), by Dangote Industries Limited under the tax credit method of infrastructure funding, with Hitech Construction Nigeria Limited as the subcontractor. The rehabilitated Third Mainland Bridge, the longest of three bridges connecting Lagos Island to the mainland, spans about 11.8km. It was commissioned by President Shehu Shagari in 1980 and completed by General Ibrahim Babangida in 1990. The bridge recently underwent significant rehabilitation to improve its structural integrity and extend its lifespan. ''This is a great feat by any standards, and it is all for Nigeria. I congratulate the Ministry of Works and the contractors for the great work. ''It is not only in Lagos that these good things are happening. From the Presidential Villa in Asokoro to the AYA Roundabout in the capital city (Abuja), you will notice a great deal of work and some of these projects will be commissioned this week,'' the Senate President said. |

The Student Loan Portal goes live exactly a week from today on Friday, May 24, 2024. I call on prominent Nigerians and even other Presidential candidates in the last election to support this laudable policy. We should not only condemn. When good occurs, we could also commend. I know if this were a beer drinking portal, a person like Peter Obi, who spent eight years as Governor of Anambra without building a single school, would have commended it, due to his love for beer. He is a HERO to beer drinkers. I hereby appeal to Peter Obi to also be a HERO to students by commending this policy and asking his Obidients to apply via the portal. #TableShaker |

Lagos State's GDP has reached an all-time high of ₦41 trillion, up from ₦27 trillion four years ago. Lagos is now the seventh largest economy in Africa, with an economy almost equivalent to that of Kenya. This is what you get when your governors build schools and railways instead of building breweries and beer parlours! Congratulations, Lagos! https://twitter.com/renoomokri/status/1786062726021693801

Labour has won the Blackpool South by-election after a huge swing from the Tories amid mounting losses for Rishi Sunak’s party in local elections across the country. The Conservatives avoided finishing in third place to Reform UK by just 117 votes, and have so far lost more than half of their council seats up for election. The by-election in Blackpool South was held after The Times revealed that Scott Benton, the former MP, had offered to lobby ministers in exchange for money. It marks the eleventh by-election defeat for the Conservatives since the last general election. We’re probably looking at certainly one of the worst, if not the worst, Conservative performance in local government elections for the last 40 years,” he told the BBC. The by-election in Blackpool South was the third biggest swing in post-war by-election history, and the fifth parliamentary by-election with swings of more than 20 per cent from Tories to Labour. Curtice said: “The last time we had swings that big was the 1992 to 1997 parliament, and we know what happened in 1997. “Of course the Conservatives were defending a very high baseline, losses did seem inevitable. But so far, they are basically losing half of the seats they’re trying to defend. If that continues, they may end up losing 500 or so seats which was the thing they were meant to avoid. https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/local-elections-results-2024-live-tory-labour-latest-news-h7zd09wdt |

Buckle up! Voters head to the polls for a bumper day of local elections Thursday. It’s a chance for 43 million people in England and Wales to pick their local reps in a host of institutions with proper decision-making powers. But, with a U.K. general election looming, the local results are also going to be pored over for a sense of just how badly Rishi Sunak’s under-fire Tories might fare later this year. POLITICO pulled together a handy crib sheet — including the best of the political parties’ spin wars and an hour-by-hour guide to the results — so you can really nerd out through the night. What’s actually up for grabs — and where are the key fights? About 2,600 seats on 107 English councils … 11 mayoralties including London … 37 Police and Crime Commissioner posts in England and Wales … 25 London Assembly members … one Blackpool South parliamentary by-election … and zilch in Scotland. The embattled Scottish National Party must be chuffed. MAYORS: Labour Leader Keir Starmer told party chiefs in March he’s targeting the West Midlands, Tees Valley and new East Midlands mayoralties, as they have clusters of marginal seats and high-profile Tory incumbents in Andy Street and Ben Houchen. Labour aides are still sure they’ll win East Mids, but both sides say West Mids is on a knife-edge. Any Labour person you talk to now insists Tees Valley (73 percent Tory in 2021) will stay blue. Each side accuses the other of expectation management. Labour is also eyeing an upset in the York and North Yorkshire contest. It’s still confident of a win in its North East stronghold, but there are a few jitters about independent candidate Jamie Driscoll. BLACKPOOL SOUTH BY-ELECTION: Labour aides are also putting the bellows under this fight, triggered by the resignation of scandal-hit Conservative former MP Scott Benton. They say a swing of more than 12 percent would signal a general election majority. Also watching this one closely are a secretive band of Tories who want to oust Sunak before the election. If Nigel Farage’s right-wing Reform UK knock the Conservatives into third place, it could spur them into action. POLICE COMMISSIONERS: Boring? Never! Now first-past-the-post, these races are a wind sock for regions where Labour needs to win big in the general election. Tory strategists claim they could lose up to half of their 29 PCCs. Labour strategists privately say they’re in with a chance of gaining up to 12, while the Liberal Democrats are eyeing three. COUNCILS: The Conservatives and Labour are each defending nearly 1,000 seats which were last contested in 2021 — the Tories’ best year since 2008 and a low point for Labour. Expert analysis suggests the Conservatives could lose 500 seats while Labour gains 300. https://www.politico.eu/article/uk-local-elections-2024-watch-results/ |
