My mother motivated me when I wanted to quit -Aisha Akinola, first African Sabbatical Officer at Edinburgh University Sokoto-born Aisha Akinola, has broken records as the first African to become a Sabbatical Officer at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. A sabbatical officer is a students representative. Akinola currently serves as the Vice President, Welfare in the Scottish University’s Student Association. While chatting with our correspondent, Akinola said her mother motivated her to run for the role at a point when she felt discouraged. “After giving my manifesto, I felt so down and depressed because I was the only person of colour. I called my Mum and she encouraged me to continue,” she said. “During my campaign, I gave it my all and I was determined that even if I fail, I would fail gloriously but lo and behold, I won,” she said. Akinola emerged the first African sabbatical officer and the first African to hold the role of the Vice President Welfare in her University’s 438 years history. Akinola revealed that she became aware of the sabbatical officer role while she was getting her visa to travel to Edinburgh. When I was preparing my visa at the airport, they asked me if I wanted to go on sabbatical. So, I was intrigued and checked out the meaning of the word. From that moment, I started looking forward to it,” she said. As a sabbatical officer in her University’s Student Association, Akinola hopes to carry out campaigns on her campus to solve issues relating to racial segregation and students support. She is also passionate about embedding equality, diversity, and inclusion into the experience of students at the University of Edinburgh. According to her, she hopes that the University embraces diversity and inclusion under her tenure, as these factors are personal to her. She revealed that during her meetings with other officials, people always get to notice her as she is the only person of colour and that her religion makes her stand out too. Being a person of colour and a Muslim, Akinola sees herself as a person of complexities. Asides being a sabbatical officer at the University of Edinburgh, Akinola is also a model, hair stylist, and henna artist. For her, modelling is a passion while hair styling and henna artistry are side hustles. She said, “As a child, I was making toffee and ‘chin chin’ to sell at school. I have always had that entrepreneurial spirit and that’s how I’ve been able to manage my passion, role and side hustles.” https://punchng.com/nigerian-emerges-first-african-student-rep-in-scottish-varsitys-438-year-history/

A top political appointee of the Delta State Governor, Mudi Tample, may never step his feet again in government house, we learned. According to our insider sources, the State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa directed the office of the Secretary to the State Government on Tuesday to issue a two months suspension to the aide, who is always seen with him all over the country, We gathered from multiple sources that his sins which have been compiling in the kitchen cabinet of the governor reached a crescendo on the above day. The appointee approached the legislators from Abuja led by Senator James Manager to ask them if he can arrange for some young damsels for them to spend the nights with for all the nights they will stay in Asaba till they go back to Abuja after the national assignment. They were in the government house on a courtesy visit to intimate him of their plans to kick off the constitutional review set up by the Deputy Senate President, Barr. Ovie Omo-Agege. Some of the Senators were willing to take the offer while some kicked against it. One of those who works in the government house and was present while the aide was talking to the Senators approached a senior government official, who opened the governor’s office for him to tell the governor the irresponsibility of his aide. Okowa was livid according to a source and immediately ordered his suspension and removal of his name from the payroll, pending when he is recalled. The plan however is to permanently kick him out of government house even if he’s recalled. The suspension however has been kept secret from going to the public as the government fears a backlash from citizens who have always known that it’s an unofficial pattern for visiting government officials to be provided with young girls old enough to be their daughters to calm their aged bodies. Okowa, a self-confessed Anglican Christian has jettisoned the practice of harboring girls around him since he was elected in 2015. https://www.societyreporters.com/gov-okowa-suspends-top-appointee-for-arranging-slay-queens-for-senators-who-came-for-constitutional-review/

This is a message from a Nigerian living in the US, it's worth sharing! DON'T EVER CURSE YOUR COUNTRY 1. If you don't know how you are blessed, you will think your father's farm is worse than your friend father's farm. 2. $1 is ₦500 and so what? 3. Let me elucidate from my little experience. Can anyone in the US use $1 for breakfast? No! 4. But in Nigeria, ₦500 will give you breakfast and lunch. 5.Majority of people's monthly house rent (self contained apartment) in the USA is $1,000 and above... and that is your own 2 year's rent! 6. Have you ever paid for insurance before? Insurance in the US is $280 and that is almost ₦100,000 monthly. 7. When last did you pay monthly phone bills? I pay almost ₦40,000 monthly and if I don't, they are going to block my SIM. Your own MTN can be there for months without recharge. 8. When last did you work on Saturday and Sunday? 9. This I do compulsorily and on regular basis. 10. Don't get me wrong, the US is better than Nigeria, depending on which angle you are viewing it. 11. Do you want to hear the truth? 12. Many people in Nigeria live a more fulfilling life compared to their counterparts abroad. 13. Forget about all the packaging on social media and give credit to the good life you are living. 14. Do you know why Nigerians living in the US always rush back quickly whenever they come home visiting? 15. Because bills are counting and elongated absence (freedom) will put their lives in jeopardy. 16. If you, as a black person, attempt to emulate the whites, they will kneel on your neck. 17. Apart from Congo, no citizens in the entire universe enjoy life to the fullest than Nigerians. 18. You are abundantly blessed but you don't know until you get visa and relocate abroad, that is when you will know that your 8-hour job in Nigeria with free weekend is awoof. 19. With 8-hour job abroad, you can only pay bills, you need other 6 to 8 hours jobs to save for the future and plan your life. 20. The truth is that the grass is green everywhere, it's lack of vision greed of our leaders/politicians and the skewed religious practices (which placed emphasis on miracles) that ascended Nigeria onto a myopic tentacle of complete standstill. 21. Always thank God wherever you may find yourself. Nigeria is good and will be better. 22. *God bless Federal Republic of Nigeria.* #Copied |

A source in the office of the Head of Federal Civil Service said, “It was discovered that names were fraudulently smuggled into the list of those officially recruited and that a large number of fake appointment letters were discovered in some Ministries. As a result, the Head of Service, Mrs Folashade Yemi-Esan, decided to halt processing the payment of wages for the newly employed staff until investigations are concluded by a committee set up in February to look into the matter.” ![]() |

The Court of Appeal sitting in Lagos, Thursday, dismissed the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, appeal, seeking to disqualify Senator Adetokunbo Abiruof the All Progressives Congress, APC, from continuing to represent Lagos East senatorial district. A three-man panel of the court affirmed the March 1, 2021, decision of Justice Chukwuka Obiozor of the Federal High Court in Lagos, which dismissed Gbadamosi and the PDP’s suit for lacking in merit. The APC chieftain, Abiru won the last December 5 senatorial bye-election by a landslide, polling 89,204 votes against Gbadamosi, who polled 11,257 votes. But Gbadamosi and the PDP challenged Abiru’s eligibility to contest the election. The challengers sought to disqualify Abiru on the ground of double voter registration, residency, indigeneship and violation of Section 31 of the Electoral Act. But in dismissing their case, Justice Obiozor agreed with Abiru’s counsel, Kemi Pinheiro, SAN and APC’s counsel, Abiodun Owonikoko, SAN, that the issue of residency and indegineship were not disqualifying factors under the constitution. Dissatisfied, Gbadamosi and PDP approached the appellate court. Delivering the unanimous judgment on Thursday, via Zoom, Justice Daniel Kallio, decided the appeal and cross appeal in Abiru and the APC’s favour. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2021/04/lagos-east-appeal-court-throws-out-gbadamosi-pdps-appeal/ |
