Nairaland GeneralTwo Men Die Rescuing A Chicken by SaAbbas(op): 8:55pm On Jun 27, 2015
Two men on Saturday died while rescuing a hen that fell into a well in Dawakin Tofa local government area of Kano state, Daily Trust has learnt.

It was gathered that the incident happened in Gargari village of the local government area at about 5am shortly before the Muslims dawn prayers.

The two men are Garba Adamu (60) and Ali Abdullahi (50). The hen belonged to Adamu but his neighbour Abdullahi jumped into the well when Adamu was trapped in it.

Efforts by neighbours to rescue the two men inside the well yielded no result.

When officials of the Kano Fire Service arrived, they maneuvered and removed the men from the deep well only to discover that they had ceased breathing. The chicken too was found dead.

In a telephone interview, the Director of the Kano state fire service, Alhaji Balarabe Kabara confirmed the report, saying his men removed the lifeless bodies of the men.

Kabara who described the death of the men as unfortunate said they have handed over their corpses to the Divisional Police Officer of the local government police division.

“When the first man jumped into the well in order to remove the hen, he drowned thus the other man went inside to rescue the first person,” he said in a phone interview.

It was gathered that the two men have since been buried at the burial ground of the area in line with Islamic injunctions.

When contacted the spokesperson of the Kano Police Command, ASP Magaji Musa Majia confirmed the report, saying the men were pronounced death at the General Hospital.

PoliticsBorno Denies Reports On Chibok School Principal As Commissioner by SaAbbas(op): 8:20pm On Jun 25, 2015
The Borno State government on Thursday denied an online media report on the alleged nomination of Mrs Asabe Kwambura, the principal of Government Secondary School (GSS) Chibok, as a commissioner by Governor Kashim Shettima.

Malam Isa Gusau, the Special Adviser on Communications Strategy to Shettima, in a statement in Maiduguri, described the report as “a mischievous joke”.

“In the last one week, we have noticed a very strange information being circulated by some online media platforms claiming that Shettima had nominated Mrs Asabe Kwambura, the Principal of GSS, Chibok for the post of the Commissioner of Education.

“We completely ignored the report for what it was, a mischievous joke and cheap blackmail that did not deserve any response, as it was mainly ‘trending’ on the social media,” he said.

Gusau lamented that it was sad that some media organizations had lifted the report without verifying the source.

“However, we noticed, and most unfortunately, that in recent days, some otherwise respected F.M stations reported such a joke without even making the slightest attempt to cross check with officials in Borno, or at least, find out from journalists or media houses that have correspondents resident in the state ,who are in position to have accurate information about the activities of the state.

“To start with, neither a president nor a governor nominates anyone as Minister or Commissioner for a particular ministry.”

“The usual practice is to nominate someone as Minister or Commissioner designate for screening by lawmakers, and it is only after nominees are approved by lawmakers and administered oaths of offices and allegiance, that they are allocated Ministries”.

“In Government procedures across Nigeria, only Special Advisers, Heads of Federal or State Government establishments, commissioners in commissions and certain chief executives, are announced by a President or Governor, stating their specific responsibilities at the time of their nomination for screening by lawmakers, or in some cases, they are out-rightly sworn in without lawmakers’ screening, depending on constitutional requirements.

“Therefore, to say that Governor Kashim Shettima has nominated Mrs Kwambura as Commissioner for Education, and that she was to undergo screening at the Borno State House of Assembly, simply indicates crass ignorance on government procedures, and which goes to confirm that the story was indeed nothing more than a joke that should only be told during comedy shows to entertain audience,” he said.

PoliticsRe: South Africa Threatens ICC Withdrawal Over Al-bashir Controversy by SaAbbas(op): 8:11pm On Jun 25, 2015
SaAbbas:
The South African government on Thursday threatened to withdraw from the International Criminal Court (ICC) after a row over the court’s attempt to have Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir arrested in Johannesburg.

Justice Minister, Jeff Radebe, said after a cabinet meeting in Cape Town that a group of ministers would review South Africa’s ICC membership to ensure complied with the country’s obligations to African Union (AU).

The minister said South Africa may as a last resort consider withdrawing from the ICC.

Radebe argued that South Africa was right not to arrest al-Bashir due to his diplomatic immunity.

He said al-Bashir was not a on a visit to South Africa rather for a meeting of the AU, “so how do we arrest him”.

Al-Bashir took power in a bloodless coup in 1989 and has won three elections since.

In the last poll, conducted in April and boycotted by the main opposition parties, official results showed him winning 94 per cent of the vote.

PoliticsGhana Destroys Hundreds Of Homes In Accra To Prevent Floods by SaAbbas(op): 10:34pm On Jun 21, 2015
ACCRA (Reuters) – Bulldozers razed hundreds of homes and businesses in the poor Sodom and Gomorrah neighbourhood of Ghana’s capital on Saturday so the authorities can start widening a lagoon to prevent a repeat of this month’s deadly floods.

Some residents said security forces sprayed them with tear gas after they threw stones to protect their livelihoods from the bulldozers. By evening, thousands were stranded in the rain amid rubble and household goods strewn for more than a mile.

“What they have done is not good for us because this is where some of us work and take care of our families,” said scrap metal merchant Muhammed Abdul Karim as he surveyed the wreckage of his shack and the motorised tricycle he uses to haul iron.

Flood control has become an urgent problem for President John Mahama’s government since more than 50 people drowned in torrents caused by blocked drains on June 3-4, a tragedy that exposed the country’s creaking infrastructure.

The same night 96 people sheltering from the floods at a downtown gas station died when it exploded in the worst disaster in decades in the West African country.

The incidents add to the difficulties facing President Mahama 18 months before the government faces voters in what is likely to be a tight election in one of Africa’s more stable democracies.

The government has vowed to end crippling power blackouts this year. It started a programme with the International Monetary Fund in April to restore fiscal stability and rapid growth to an economy powered by oil, cocoa and gold exports.

CLOGGED WITH REFUSE

City authorities said they were destroying dwellings within 100 metres of the Korle lagoon that borders Sodom and Gomorrah in a preparatory step towards dredging and widening a channel clogged with the capital’s refuse.

“People have gotten fresh sawdust to fill the lagoon to the extent that they are now putting up concrete structures, not even wooden structures. We have to de-silt this river,” Accra Regional Minister Joshua Afotey-Agbo told Reuters.

Mahama told reporters last week the government respected the rights of people living in the neighbourhood, which is part of Agbogbloshie suburb, and would move them gradually, first relocating the local market to higher ground.

The government’s action carries a political risk. Many locals are from northern Ghana and have supported the ruling party, but some residents burned their homes in protest at the destruction, starting a blaze that raged out of control.

“Tell Mahama we are not voting for him again,” several residents told Reuters.

HealthAisha Buhari Urges Nigerians To Embrace Yoga by SaAbbas(op): 10:24pm On Jun 21, 2015
Wife of Nigeria’s president, Hajia Aisha Buhari, on Sunday in Abuja urged Nigerians to embrace Yoga to enhance their physical and mental well-being.

“Her (Aisha’s) message is to thank the Indian High Commission for bringing Yoga and to encourage Nigerians to embrace the initiative of
Yoga.

“This is because, it (Yoga) is for the well-being of your mind and body. Yoga is a very welcome initiative by the Indian High Commission because it has been around and it has been a source of well-being for the Indian people.

“It is a gift from India to the world. They’ve had a success story of Yoga for thousands of years and they are bringing it to Nigeria.

“We hope it is going to add to the well-being of Nigerians. Nigerians should do what is physically fit for them to enhance their well-being,” she said.
