Religion / Has Sultan Of Sokoto's Palace Become Nigeria's State House? - CAN by saaedlee: 2:51pm On Aug 26, 2016
The Christian Association of Nigerian (CAN), yesterday, berated the United States (US) Secretary of States, Mr John Kerry over his visit to Nigeria, describing the visit as discriminatory, personal and divisive. The President of CAN, Rev. Supo Ayokunle said the visit would further the federal government’s plan to continue to persecute the teeming population of Nigerian Christians. Kerry’s two day visit has attracted condemnation from Christian leaders who question his sincerity during the visit. Kerry, during the visit had only visited the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar III, met with the 19 northern governors, whom only three are Christians. At the Presidential Villa, where Kerry was hosted by President Muhammadu Buhari, met with select northern governors, which also irked critics on the selection process of his hosts. Ayokunle, told journalists in an interview in Abuja that Kerry disrespected the heterogeneous nature of Nigeria, while nakedly favouring northern Nigeria and Muslims to the detriment of the Christian community. United States Secretary of State John Kerry (L) talks with the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian National Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar during his visit to his palace in Sokoto, on August 23, 2016. Kerry, who is on a three-nation tour is in Nigeria to discuss counterterrorism efforts, the Nigerian economy, the fight against corruption, and human rights issues. According to Ayokunle, the attitude and disposition of the Secretary of States and the discrimination he adopted during the visit supports accusations that the President Barack Obama’s administration, alongside Kerry and other strategic US politicians in the Obama’s government openly supported the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2016 general elections, which produced the current leadership of the country. While calling on Kerry to “stop interfering in Nigerian affairs”, CAN president explained that the visit was a complete flop and exposed Kerry’s negligence of Nigeria’s unity in diversity ideology that has remained the bedrock of the country.“Why did he meet with 19 states governors, without southern governors, is Nigeria the north alone, why did you go to the north alone?” Ayokunle stated that visit sends a wrong message, affirming the report that Christians under the Buhari’s administration are under a siege. “There’s a siege on Christians. Kerry, his actions speak volume, his actions, body language were very divisive. “If US Secretary of States is coming for official visit, it’s understandable, but we demand explanation why he was selective. Has the Sultan Palace become another State House? Was Kerry invited by the Sultan? “We have 36 States in Nigeria; he only selected northern governors to meet with them. It was a visit to the north, not to Nigeria. It was surely a very divisive visit. With the visit to the north, Kerry’s visit has heightened fear and tension among Christians in Nigeria, if they cannot bring us together, they should not interfere in our affairs” Speaking against the perennial killing of Christians in northern Nigeria, The CAN president said, based on government the selective persecution of Christians mostly by the Department of State Service (DSS) and the Nigerian Police, it was obvious the administration was anti-Christians. He said: “Have the DSS arrested the Muslim youths who burnt down a Catholic Church in Niger State because they were worshiping on Friday? What happened to the ECWA Pastor who was killed in his farm in Obi Local Government Area of Nasarawa State? What have happened with Redeemed Preacher who was murdered in Kubwa, Abuja? “Look at the recent case in Zamfara State, Christians where burnt alive. What has happened? They will tell you, they are still investigating. Have they been arrested and charged them to court? If the government cannot sit up and protect Christians, tolerance is going to break down, they should do the right thing, they should not provoke Christians. Have we ever seen this government bring anybody to book?” The CAN president tasked President Buhari “to come out clean”, adding that, “a government that doesn’t listen is not for the people.” Ayokunle maintained that while the DSS and the Police have been slowed in arresting extremists killing Christians in the country, they have been fast persecuting Christians. The CAN leader called on the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) to as a matter of urgency intervene in the case of Mr Joe Chinakwe who was arrested for naming his dog ‘Buhari’. He argued that, naming an animal with somebody’s name is never a criminal offence. “The NBA should take up that case and ascertain whether the man has the right to give any name to a dog. They should come and protect the man’s human rights and set the record why the case is not a criminal offence.”

Phones / Whatsapp To Start Sharing Your Number With Facebook by saaedlee: 2:18pm On Aug 25, 2016

Global messaging service WhatsApp says it will start sharing the phone numbers of its users with Facebook, its parent company. That means WhatsApp users could soon start seeing more targeted ads on Facebook — although not on the messaging service itself.

The move is a subtle but significant shift for WhatsApp, which has long promised to safeguard the privacy of more than 1 billion users around the world. WhatsApp is giving users a limited time to opt out of sharing their information with Facebook, although they must take the extra step of unchecking a box to do so. It also says Facebook won't post phone numbers online or give them out to anyone.

But the giant social network has been looking for ways to make money from WhatsApp since it bought the service two years ago, in an eye-popping deal ultimately worth $21.8 billion. At the same time, Facebook has pledged not to interfere with a longstanding promise by WhatsApp's co-founders to respect users' privacy and keep ads off its messaging platform.

WhatsApp on Thursday offered a glimpse of its plans for turning on the money spigot, releasing new documents that describe the company's privacy policy and the terms of service that users must agree to follow. The documents are the first revision of those policies since 2012, before Facebook acquired Whatsapp.

One change follows through on previous hints by WhatsApp executives, who have said they're exploring ways for businesses to communicate with customers on WhatsApp. That could include using WhatsApp to provide receipts, confirm a reservation or update the status of a delivery.

Companies could also send marketing offers or messages about sales to individual customers, according to the new documents, which note that users will be able to control or block such messages. WhatsApp says it will continue to bar traditional display ads from its service.

"We do not want you to have a spammy experience," the company tells users in a summary of the new policies.

Travel / First Ever Light Rail To Be Inaugurated Soon by saaedlee: 12:10pm On Aug 25, 2016

Nigeria's First Ever Light Rail to be Inaugurated
Nigeria's first ever light rail system will be commissioned soon by President Muhammadu Buhari. It was constructed by the Cross Rivers State Government and built by Ponet train systems. This was contained in series of statements credited to the Calabasas state Governor, Ben Ayade

He further revealed that the train with a cruising speed of about 40 kilometres per hour, has 12 cars, including 10 passenger and two equipment cars will be opened soon to ferry passengers.

The multi-billion Naira Calabar Light rail project, the first in Nigeria, would soon be inaugurated by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The 12-car monorail system, when fully operational, would use an Intamin P8 electric powered passenger shuttle train to convey passengers from Tinapa Resort, across Lake Tinapa to Calabar International Conference Centre (CICC).

The monorail would also allow access to Studio Tinapa, Tinapa Shopping Centre and Tinapa waterpark as well as provide a quick alternative access to Summit Hills.

Each car is primed for seven to eight passengers all seated, while the train’s length, width and height are approximately 38, 1.95 and 2.2 metres, respectively.

Gov. Ben Ayade had recently told journalists in Calabar that Buhari would inaugurate the train to mark his first year in office.

Mr Mba Mba, the station’s Electrical Engineer, said the light rail project was completed in December last year.

“Right now, the Calabar Monorail is ready for use pending inauguration by appropriate authorities. We have test-run the system and confirmed its readiness. Gov. Ben Ayade was here with his team to see for himself what is on ground.

The light rail project will have three sub station and will commute passengers on daily basis to the three destinations, which are Tinapa, Tinapa Lakeside Hotel and Calabar International Conference Centre

A male National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, member identified as Oluwabusiyi Adeola Bolarinde has reportedly battered and removed two teeth of a fellow female corps member, Temitope Adedewe, for refusing to date him.
The incident took place in Arochukwu, Abia State during the weekend.

The Nation newspaper reports that National Youth Service Corps headquarters Abuja is yet to officially respond to the case.

Adewewe, who has known Bolarinde since June of 2015, said he started making advances at her during their undergraduate days at the History Department of OAU, Ile-Ife, adding that she always refused yielding to him “because he was the aggressive type.”

She said, “The first time I spoke to him was when we were in camp.”

According to the report, both got posted to the same Local Government Area and also the same Place of Primary Assignment, PPA.

Since they also stayed in the same lodge, Bolarinde seized the opportunity to press her harder for a relationship.

It was gathered that when every attempt to get her failed, the suitor suddenly decided to apply threats and violence, making her life miserable.

It was learnt that Adewewe had told him to stop threatening him via Whatsapp, which angered Bolarinde and he allegedly went into her room and started beating her with his belt.

He later picked up a hammer hit her mouth, making her to lose two teeth.

However, Bolarinde has refused to talk to journalists concerning the issue, citing the NYSC code of conduct, which he said does not allow serving corps members to give audience to the press.

Politics / John Kerry Arrives Nigeria, Pays Sultan Of Sokoto Visit by saaedlee: 11:48am On Aug 23, 2016

Mr Kerry was speaking during a courtesy visit on the Sultan at his palace in Sokoto.

He said that the Sultanate Council was building a community of tolerance for peace, progress and political stability in Nigeria.

He said that the United States would continue to identify itself with the Sultanate in strengthening religious tolerance and understanding among Nigerians.

He said that being the first secretary of state to visit the seat of the caliphate, all hands should be on deck towards strengthening religious knowledge among Nigerians.

Sultan Sa’ad Abubakar had earlier expressed delight at the visit.

He said that the council would continue to promote peaceful coexistence among Nigerians for the overall political growth of the country.

He explained that religious tolerance and understanding among Nigerians remained the principal objective of the Sultanate in mobilising Nigerians to tolerate one another for peace, progress and political stability of the country.

Governor Aminu Tambuwal, who accompanied Kerry to the palace, said the state government would continue to strengthen peaceful coexistence among the people, irrespective of religious, tribal and political differences.

“We don’t discriminate on religious, tribal, ethnic or political affiliations as we accommodate all for peace and harmony, ” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Kerry had a closed door meeting with Sultan Sa’ad Abubakar and some leaders of the two major religions.

Gov. Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara and Alhaji Inuwa Abdulkadir, Deputy National Chairman of APC North West, were present during the courtesy visit on the Sultan.

Mr Kerry met Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta in Nairobi on Monday.

The two discussed regional security and terrorism before Kerry met with the foreign ministers of Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Uganda and Kenya.

The US said that it will help finance next year’s general elections in Kenya to ensure that everything runs smoothly.

“We are investing over $25 million (22 million euros) this year in order to support your electoral process coming into next year, what that means is we want to strengthen your election operations,” said Kerry in a post-meeting press conference.

The US also announced $138 million in new aid to South Sudan to help in the provision of basic needs and has promised continued engagement with the country in an attempt to end the continuing conflict.

Foreign Ministers from Kenya, South Sudan, Sudan, Somalia and Uganda agreed to move forward with the deployment of a regional protection force authorized by the UN Security Council to bring peace in South Sudan.

“This is not an intervention force, this is a protection force. Warring parties have terrorized and abused non-combatants,” said Kerry.

South Sudan is struggling to emerge from a two-and-a-half year civil war pitting President Salva Kiir against his former Vice President, Riek Machar.

Welcome home Elder,

The spate of kidnapping in this country is really getting out of hand, but where the problem lies isn't just the act, but labeling a certain tribe, group or sect responsible for these atrocious occurrences.
It is really pathetic to see our youths rant and pour insults on/against each other on social media, whereas they should be putting their intelligence together to make a difference.
Here on Nairaland, they called themselves NCAN!
