Abuja — Prostitutes in large numbers have taken over some popular streets in the Federal Capital Territory at night. At Port Harcourt crescent off Gimbiya street, Garki, Abuja, our reporter observed half nude ladies exposing their busts and panties, beckoning on motorists to pick them for the night. The situation was somehow similar at Sheraton hotel junction where young ladies lined up right from the entrance of the junction to a shopping plaza along the street. On the roads leading to Transcorp Hotel and close to UBA at Wuse 11, ladies soliciting for men were also seen by the roadsides. Married women were seen complaining about the freedom given to these ladies to expose themselves on the streets and one of them even pointed to a police patrol car parked at the entrance of Gimbiya street. "Such women breed criminals in any area and the police should clamp down on them immediately," a married woman said. At the FCT Police Command, a police officer said prostitution is prohibited in Abuja. "We have clamped down on them on several instances and even charged them to court where they pleaded guilty and were convicted," the police officer stated. write your commend |

South Africa held Iraq to a draw in the opening match of what many see as a test run for next year's 2010 Fifa World Cup, the Confederations Cup 2009. Egypt and the host nation are the two African teams in the tournament. South African fans use their vuvuzelas to create a noise which sounds like an angry swarm of bees throughout their games. |

President Barack Obama has welcomed Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai to the Oval Office in Washington, DC, with a U.S. $73 million aid package for Zimbabwe. But he refused to give it directly to the unity government "because we continue to be concerned about consolidating democracy, human rights, and rule of law," he said. For his part, Tsvangirai told reporters at the end of his Friday meeting with Obama that he recognized that "even by the standard of our own benchmarks, there are gaps that still exist, " He said he told Obama that his participation in the the unity government with President Robert Mugabe was "a journey". "This is a transitional arrangement," Tsvangirai said. "We want to institute those reforms that will ensure that in 18 months' time the people of Zimbabwe are given an opportunity to elect their own government, We continue to engage in ensuring that [external humanitarian], support consolidates the process towards democratic change." A transcript of their remarks, as released by the White House and amended on the basis of a live recording of PM Tsvangirai's remarks, follows: PRESIDENT OBAMA: Well, I want to welcome Prime Minister Tsvangirai to the Oval Office. He and his delegation have been meeting with my team throughout the day. I obviously have extraordinary admiration for the courage and the tenacity that the Prime Minister has shown in navigating through some very difficult political times in Zimbabwe. There was a time when Zimbabwe was the bread basket of Africa and continues to have enormous potential. It has gone through a very dark and difficult period politically. The President -- President Mugabe -- I think I've made my views clear, has not acted oftentimes in the best interest of the Zimbabwean people and has been resistant to the kinds of democratic changes that need to take place. We now have a power-sharing agreement that shows promise, and we want to do everything we can to encourage the kinds of improvement not only on human rights and rule of law, freedom of the press and democracy that is so necessary, but also on the economic front. The people of Zimbabwe need very concrete things -- schools that are reopened, a health care delivery system that can deal with issues like cholera or HIV/AIDS, an agricultural system that is able to feed its people. And on all these fronts, I think the Prime Minister is committed to significant concrete improvement in the day-to-day lives of the people of Zimbabwe. I congratulate him -- they've been able to bring inflation under control after hyperinflation that was really tearing at the fabric of the economy. We're starting to see slowly some improvements in capacity -- industrial capacity there. So, overall, in a very difficult circumstance, we've seen progress from the Prime Minister. We are grateful to him. We want to encourage him to continue to make progress. The United States is a friend to the people of Zimbabwe. I've committed $73 million in assistance to Zimbabwe. It will not be going through the government directly because we continue to be concerned about consolidating democracy, human rights, and rule of law, but it will be going directly to the people in Zimbabwe and I think can be of assistance to the Prime Minister in his efforts. He's going to continue to provide us with direction in ways that he thinks we can be helpful. And I'm grateful to him for his leadership, for his courage, and I'm looking forward to being a partner with him in the years to come. Mr. Prime Minister. PRIME MINISTER TSVANGIRAI: Thank you. Thank you very much, Mr. President. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for receiving us. I'm sure that -- I want to take the opportunity of congratulating you, although belatedly, for being elected the President. And I think it's a profound experience for some of us who are committed to change, and hopefully that -- the Prime Minister, who is committed to change, and the President, who is committed to change, find common convergence position. |

Sunday Oliseh has said he will no longer play for Nigeria. The former captain of the Super Eagles told BBC Sport Online that after a decade with the national team it was time to concentrate on his club career and family life. "It's time to turn another page and move on," he said. "I've held on to my place in the national team for almost 10 years and Nigeria needs a team with a new generation of players. "I have taken a lot of risks travelling all over the world for my country, so I think I should spend more time with my family." Oliseh made his debut with the national team on 24 July 1993, in an African Nations Cup qualifier against Ethiopia. "The only thing that I have not won with my country is the World Cup. Achievements "I have been an African champion in 1994 and won silver and bronze medals at the Nations Cup, while I captained the team. "Besides, I have won an Olympic gold medal and been at two World Cups. Oliseh wants to spend time with his family "It has been a priviledge to serve my country and I have been truly blessed," Oliseh said. It is not the first time that Oliseh has quit the national team. He retired after the 1998 World Cup finals in France but was persuaded by the Nigeria Football Association to rescind his decision. But the Borussia Dortmund player says there is no going back this time. "I do not think that there is anything else that I can achieve with Nigeria, so I will not change my mind again," he added. Oliseh, Nigeria's most travelled footballer, has played for five other clubs in the Belgian, Italian, Dutch and German leagues. Do you miss thi young man? |

No date has yet been given for when the free software will launch Microsoft is poised to start giving away security software. The company is reportedly trialling free anti-virus software internally and said the beta version would be released "soon". Called Morro, the software will tackle viruses but lack the broader range of utilities, such as parental locks, found in paid-for security suites. Morro will be Microsoft's second venture in the highly competitive security market. Microsoft's first attempt revolved around the Windows Live OneCare service that did not succeed in turning many customers away from rivals such as Symantec and McAfee. Microsoft plans to discontinue Live OneCare once the Morro software is ready. No specific date has been given for when Morro will be released, but in the past Microsoft has said it would be out by the end of 2009 at the latest. Microsoft said Morro would tackle viruses, spyware, rootkits and trojans. Janice Chaffin, Symantec's president of consumer products, said customers wanted more than just basic protection. "A full internet security suite is what consumers require today to stay fully protected," she said. Security software for home PCs typically cost around £30-40 and often allow users to install protections on more than one computer. Other companies, such as AVG and Alwil already produce and distribute free anti-virus products. Fake help In its latest update, Microsoft added code that detects and deletes the widespread Internet Antivirus Pro family of fake security software programs. Such programs, also known as scareware, have been proving more popular with hi-tech criminals in recent months. The Anti-Phishing Working Group estimated that there were 9,287 bogus anti-malware program in circulation in December 2008 - a rise of 225% since January 2008. The US government has moved to shut down some companies peddling the programs that falsely claim to find malicious software on PCs and then charge for the non-existent threats to be removed. In addition, the Internet Antivirus Pro software displays fake Windows security messages to try and trick people into thinking the product is legitimate. The software also contains a password stealer that watches where people go online and grabs login data. |
Microsoft confirmed on Friday that longtime executive Sanjay Parthasarathy is leaving the software maker after 19 years. Parthasarathy (Credit: Microsoft) Parthasarathy, the corporate vice president in charge of Microsoft's Startup Business Accelerator program, plans to retire from the company in September, a Microsoft representative said. Microsoft said his departure had been planned for some time and that it is unrelated to recent job cuts at the company. His responsibilities will be taken over by Amit Mital, who runs the "Unlimited Potential" unit that handles emerging markets. Mital will handle duties for both units, though they will remain separate operations. Mital, like Parthasarathy, reports to chief research and strategy officer Craig Mundie. Prior to heading the start-up unit, Parthasarathy had been running Microsoft's developer and platform evangelism team--the group responsible for efforts such as Channel 9 and the Imagine Cup competition. He joined Microsoft in August 1990 as a product manager in the Windows multimedia group. |
