Yale University graduate student Annie Le, whose body was found in the basement wall of an off-campus medical research building, was strangled, a spokesman for the Connecticut medical examiner's office said Wednesday. The cause of death was "traumatic asphyxia due to neck compression," the spokesman said. The office would not release the spokesman's name. Le, 24, a pharmacology student, was last seen alive September 8, the day she appeared in a surveillance video entering a four-story lab at 10 Amistad St., about 10 blocks from the main campus. Her body was found Sunday, on what was to have been her wedding day. No one has been arrested or charged in her death. Earlier Wednesday, a Yale employee was released from police custody after investigators detained him Tuesday night to collect DNA, said Jessica A. Mayorga, a spokeswoman for the city of New Haven. Police took Raymond Clark, 24, into custody after obtaining a search warrant for his home and a body warrant that allowed them to collect DNA samples as authorities probed Le's death. Video Watch how police briefly detained the lab tech » Clark, a technician, could have been arrested if he declined to provide DNA samples, but he was released after complying, Mayorga said. Police vehicles were parked outside Clark's home Tuesday in Middletown, Connecticut.nvestigators have collected about 150 pieces of evidence, reviewed about 700 hours of video and interviewed more than 150 people, said Chief James Lewis of the New Haven Police Department. A senior police official disputed Yale University President Richard Levin, who had indicated that the suspect pool would be a "limited number" of people who had been in the basement the day Le disappeared. "We know everyone that was in the basement , and we passed that on to police," Levin said. "There is an abundance of evidence." But the police official, whom CNN is not naming because of the sensitive nature of the ongoing investigation, said investigators believe dozens of people could have had access to that area of the building. Video Watch a timeline leading up to Le's death » The police official said that investigators were unlikely to make any arrest until DNA evidence is returned from analysis and that the investigation could take days or weeks. Authorities have not released information on what DNA evidence may have been found, although investigators said earlier that bloody clothing was found hidden above tiles in a drop ceiling in another part of the building. Police have not described the clothes that were found, nor said to whom they might have belonged. Teams of investigators at a Connecticut State Police lab worked through the weekend processing and examining the bloodstained garments. But Thomas Kaplan, editor in chief of the Yale Daily News, said a Yale police official told the college paper that the clothes were not what Le was wearing when she entered the building. On Sunday, New Haven Police spokesman Joe Avery said that Le's killing was not a random act, but would not elaborate Le was to have been married Sunday on New York's Long Island to Jonathan Widawsky, a Columbia University graduate student. advertisement Le was from Placerville, California, and seemed to have been aware of the risks of crime in a university town. In February, she compared crime and safety at Yale with other Ivy League schools for a piece for B magazine, published by the medical school. Among the tips she offered: Keep a minimum amount on your person. When she walked over to the research building last week, she left her purse, credit cards and cell phone in her office.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Samuel Eto'o were both kept under wraps by their former team-mates as Inter Milan held Champions League holders Barcelona to a dour Group F goalless draw at the San Siro. The quick return of the two strikers to their old clubs dominated talk in the build-up to the match but neither player, or anyone else for that matter, was able to find the breakthrough as defences came out on top. The visitors had the better of the chances, with Lionel Messi skipping inside two defenders forcing goalkeeper Julio Cesar into a fine save in the opening minute. Seven minutes later Ibrahimovic had a decent chance to net against his former employers when he got in behind the Inter defence, but his subsequent shot was poor. Messi had another effort soon after, his header being comfortably saved by Cesar, before Inter had their first sight of goal when Maicon fired over from 20 yards out. Barca were back in the ascendancy towards the end of the half, and Seydou Keita missed the best chance of the period four minutes before the break. Xavi's chip found Dani Alves inside the area, and he drew out Cesar before laying the ball back to Keita with most of the goal to aim for. However, the Mali international fired wide of the far post to let Inter off the hook. Barca survived a sare in the 65th minute when Dejan Stankovic fired just over from outside the box, before Messi, put the ball over the bar from six yards out for Barca after latching onto Thierry Henry's driven cross-shot. Barca then had a loud penalty appeal turned down, believing Stankovic had handled in the area, but those claims fell on deaf ears and the Catalan giants were forced to settle for a draw. Meanwhile, in the other group match, Dynamo Kiev scored three goals in the final 20 minutes as they came from behind to beat Russian debutants Rubin Kazan 3-1. The visitors took a shock 25th-minute lead when Alejandro Dominguez lashed a free-kick into the top left-hand corner of the net. Kiev had to wait until the 70th minute to equalize when Ayiila Yussuf rose to head home Junior Gerson Magrao's corner. Nine minutes later, Kiev went ahead when Andrei Shevchenko's pass found Magrao to fire home -- and Kiev made the three points safe with five minutes remaining when Oleg Gusev lashed home a right-footed shot. In Group E, both Liverpool and Lyon won their opening home matches 1-0 against Hungarian side Debrecen and Fiorentina of Italy respectively. At Anfield, Dirk Kuyt's 12th goal in 35 Champions League games gave the Premier League side a hard-fought victory. The Dutchman is now Liverpool's third-highest scorer in the competition's history after he forced the ball home after goalkeeper Vukasin Poleksic had palmed out a Fernando Torres drive. In Lyon, the home side made a winning start to their campaign with a narrrow win over a 10-man Fiorentina side who had striker Alberto Gilardino sent off at the end of the first-half for elbowing Jeremy Toulalan. Miralem Pjanic scored the winner from close range in the 76th minute after Fiorentina goalkeeper Sebastien Frey had kept out Kim Kallstrom's cross. CNN

Last season's losing finalists Manchester United opened their Champions League campaign with a 1-0 win away to Besiktas, while Wolfsburg beat CSKA Moscow 3-1 in Tuesday night's other Group B clash. United made the daunting trip to Istanbul without England defender Rio Ferdinand, who is believed to have a groin problem following his comeback last weekend, and started with only one striker in Wayne Rooney. Once again they missed the creativity of the departed Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored twice on his European debut for Real Madrid in Zurich on the same night, and needed a 77th minute winner from Paul Scholes to take the points. The veteran midfielder, who will miss this weekend's Manchester derby due to his red card in Sunday's 3-1 win over Tottenham, headed home after Nani's shot was only parried by Besiktas goalkeeper Hakan Arikan. Summer signing Michael Owen should have doubled the lead, but the substitute poked wide from close range. United manager Alex Ferguson revealed after the match that his players had been targeted with a laser light by at least one of the Turkish side's fans. "It was in the first half, although thankfully the police did something about it," he said. "They managed to get the culprit, which is good because I noticed it particularly on Jonny Evans. It seemed to be on him all the time." Ferguson refused to criticize Rooney for throwing his boots down in disgust after being substituted. "It was always part of our thoughts to bring Wayne off," Ferguson said. "He had been playing as the lone striker for an hour, which is why he was always going to come off. "He is never pleased to come off. He has so much energy he wants to play all the time." German champions Wolfsburg shrugged off their poor Bundesliga form to crush Juande Ramos' CSKA Moscow at the Volkswagen Arena, with striker Grafite scoring a hat-trick. The Brazilian netted the opener in clinical style in the 35th minute as he slotted through the legs of goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev after being set clear by Zvjezdan Misimovic. He made it 2-0 from the penalty spot in the 40th minute after being tugged back in the box by CSKA defender Deividas Semberas. Alan Dzagoev conjured a goal out of nothing to reduce the deficit in the 77th minute, but Grafite settled the match 10 minutes later when he received the ball from Marcel Schafer, turned Alexei Berezutsky and slotted into the net. In Group A, Juventus were held 1-1 at home by French champions Bordeaux, while Bayern Munich continued their recent revival with a 3-0 win away to Israeli side Maccabi Haifa. Vincenzo Iaquinta gave Juventus the lead in the 63rd minute when he beat goalkeeper Ulrich Rame at the near post with a low shot after being found on the righthand side of the penalty area by Fabio Cannavaro. Bordeaux leveled somewhat against the run of play in the 75th minute as Jaroslav Plasil bundled a flicked header from Fernando Menegazzo over the line from close range despite appeals for offside from the Turin crowd. Claudio Marchisio should have given Juve victory with two minutes left but hit the crossbar, and the Bianconeri had to settle for a draw. Young forward Thomas Muller has now scored four goals for Bayern in the last two matches after netting another brace in Israel. Muller, who turned 20 at the weekend after scoring twice as a substitute in the 5-1 drubbing of Borussia Dortmund, started up front in a three-pronged attack alongside Ivica Olic and Arjen Robben as summer signing Mario Gomez missed out. Olic had a first-half header ruled out for offside, but defender Daniel van Buyten broke the deadlock in the 64th minute after Maccabi failed to deal with Anatoliy Tymoschuk's high cross. Olic had another header cleared off the line before Muller sealed the match with his late double -- first firing home from the edge of the penalty area after being found by Andreas Ottl, then converting a cross at the near post from Gomez, who had come on to replace Franck Ribery. cnn |
A businessman from Wisconsin went on a business trip to Louisiana. Upon arrival, he immediately plugged his laptop into the hotel room port and sent a short E-mail back home to his wife, Jennifer Johnson, at her address, which began with JennJohn. Unfortunately, in his haste, he mistyped a letter and the E-mail ended up going to and address that began with JeanJohn, a Jean Johnson in Duluth, the wife of a preacher who had just passed away and was buried that day. The preacher's wife took one look at the E-mail and promptly fainted. It read, "Arrived safely, but it sure is hot down here!" |
A minister delivered a sermon in ten minutes one Sunday morning that was about half the usual length of his sermons. He explained, "I regret to inform you that my dog, who is very fond of eating paper, ate that portion of my sermon which I was unable to deliver this morning." After the service, a visitor from another church shook hands with the preacher as he was leaving, and said, "Sir, if that dog of yours has any pups, I sure would like to get one to give to my minister!" |
one woman, a widow (named withheld) was returning from her church after a fellowship when she was hit by car in Lagos. According to eye witnesses, the driver sped off abandoning the victim with slight injuries. Within minutes, a jeep pulled by and the driver and his cohorts (wicked Samaritans) offered to assist the accident victim and carried her into their vehicle. The people who gathered at the scene believed she was taking to a nearby hospital not knowing that they were working with the driver that knocked her down. The victim's relations on getting the accident news visited various hospitals within the area and beyond in order to locate their mother, sister, wife, cousin, sister, daughter, etc to no avail. They quickly reported the matter to the police who after inquiries and search discovered on Sunday, 28/06/2009 that the widow was killed and her dead body dumped along Lagos/Ibadan express road. Her body was found without her eyes, tongue, brain, breast, and other vital parts. The bad Samaritans happened to be ritual murderers! Beware of this new approach by ritualists and make sure that you know the identity of those offering help to you or your relations (in case you fall victim of accident). The first driver will hit the victim and run away. Within seconds, the driver of a second vehicle (behind the hit-and-run- driver) carrying the bad Samaritans will appear to offer unsolicited assistance to the victim. Let us continue to be prayerful, God will continue to save us from the wickedness of evil men. Amen ! BEST WISHES, |

When Philomena’s 3-years relationship came to an end, it was quite a rude shock to her. She could hardly believe that a relationship she had put so much into – time & resources was all over. As time went on, she wondered what really led to her break-up, but deep down inside she knew there was hardly a bit of communication in her relationship with Phillip. She found it difficult to open up whenever she hard something to discuss or share. I can’t say if that was the only reason that led to their break-up, but am pretty sure it would have lasted longer if they knew how to express their feelings to one another. The word love does not just connote giving and receiving gift items, it’s a lot more than that. It involves accommodating each other’s feelings and letting the other person know how much you really care. This write-up intends to illustrate how you as an individual can express your feelings to the one you love. The number one rule to Communication is TRUST. Both of you need to trust and respect each other for effective communication. With trust you have got nothing to hide, which makes you comfortable to open up to your partner any day, anytime. Avoid any sort of distraction. Make sure you both have time to yourselves alone. This would help strengthen the communication flow whenever the need arises. Remember not break-off eye contact when expressing your love. Above all never get tired of using the popular phrase ‘I love you’ The one you love will never get tired of hearing that. |

Thousands of Rwandan refugees in Uganda could lose their status following the expiry of a deadline for voluntarily return to their country, officials said. "We have been pushed to the limits, there is no justification for them to remain in Uganda," Tarsis Kabwengyere, Uganda's minister of disaster preparedness and refugees, said. Money, he added, was being spent on refugees whose home country was stable and willing to take them back. Ugandan camps had also swollen due to renewed violence in eastern Congo, and there was need for some refugees to return home. James Bigirwa, the deputy Resident District commissioner in Isingiro district where Nakivale settlement is located, said some refugees were faking local IDs following the expiry of the 31 July deadline. In Rwanda, the government said those who did not return by the end of the year would lose citizenship. "We shall apply the secession clause if they have not returned by the end of December, there is no more reason for any Rwandan to become a refugee," Innocent Ngango, the head of refugee repatriation at Rwanda's ministry of local government said. The refugees are mainly ethnic Hutus whose repatriation has since June been implemented by the Ugandan and Rwandan governments, with the support of the UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR. "We have agreed that it is the right time for the Rwandan refugees to take advantage of the improved situation in their country to return home," Stefano Severe, UNHCR representative in Uganda said. In the past two months, however, only 3,000 have returned home out of 17,000, some out of fear of possible persecution back home. Andrew Munyakazi, a refugee working as a cleaner in Mbarara town told IRIN on 14 July that his family had voluntarily returned to Rwanda in 2002, but his father was arraigned before a Gacaca court and imprisoned for 15 years on genocide charges. "Our land was immediately confiscated," he said. "How can I return to Rwanda - those who took over our land will cause my arrest again because they will think I have come to reclaim it." In June, the New York-based Human Rights Watch warned the Ugandan and Tanzanian governments against forceful repatriation of refugees living in camps in their countries. "Despite looming camp closing deadlines, neither government has publicly explained the alternatives," HRW said on 19 June. "Instead, both have threatened the refugees with forced return, saying that after the closures the remaining refugees will be "stripped" of their refugee status and treated as "illegal immigrants. "Both positions would be unlawful under international refugee law." Georgette Gagnon, the HRW's Africa director urged Uganda to clearly explain to the refugees options on the table. "Refugees do not lose their status as refugees simply because their camps are closed, and they should not be forcibly returned to their countries," he said. |

The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Abdul Waheed Omar, said labour and civil society organizations are protesting against the deregulation of petroleum because it would bring untold hardship to Nigerians. According to him, once petroleum is deregulated, the product would begin to sell from N94 per litre. He said that the Federal Government has lost touch with the time, adding that all over the world, in the face of the collapse of the neo-liberal ideology with its focus on liberalization, privatization and deregulation, enlightened governments are redefining the scope and role of government in society. Omar disclosed that even the United States, the self-anointed leader of the free market and neo-liberal ideology, has found to its eternal sadness that the best value is delivered to society and its members when government regulate rather than allow the market to regulate itself. He said that government had not been sensitive to the plights of the masses as all the promises made in the past before hiking the prices of petroleum products were never fulfilled. “Each time government wanted to hike the price of petroleum products, they told us that roads would be constructed or rehabilated, that health facilities would be improved, that educational institutions would be better funded, that the prices of essential commodities would come down. But you and I know that none of that has ever happened. Rather than things getting better, it is getting worse and the masses are suffering. They have been deceiving the masses for a long time now. The idea that deregulation would bring down the price of petrol does not hold water because diesel and kerosene that were deregulated over two years ago, their prices have not come down.” He said that the position of labour is still the same and they include the cancellation of demurrage on products in transit, independent verification of the transaction costs claimed by marketers, rehabilitation and expansion of Nigeria’s refineries, resumption and intensification of efforts to curb corruption, reduction of the dependence on oil and gas revenues and diversification of the economy. The NLC boss said that Nigerians should stand up and say no to deregulation since it is obvious that it is an ill-wind that would blow the masses no good. He said that labour and civil society coalition has been going around the length and breadth of the country to sensitize Nigerians on why they should stand up against deregulation of petroleum products, adding that once the business is deregulated, the masses would be hard hit. “Our protest is a tripod. We are protesting against deregulation, increase in minimum wage to N52, 200 and the full implementation of the Justice Uwais led Electoral Reform. We have been to Delta, Kano, Borno, and Lagos States and now we are in Enugu State on this issue and we still have other states to go. We want to sensitize Nigerians on these issues because we are the ones who are feeling the pains. If petrol is deregulated, the masses would no longer be able to afford even the basic commodities like garri and rice “ He said that government using corruption as the basis for deregulation does not make sense since it is a well known fact that government officials are the ones perpetrating corruption in the country. “Federal Government has always argued that it pays out more than N1 trillion annually as subsides for petroleum products and that the amount of subsidy has increased. But Labour has faulted the claim since government recently admitted that it does not have its own data on subsidies but got the figures from oil marketers. Government has claimed that it is subsidizing three petroleum products namely-diesel, kerosene and petrol but in the last two years, it withdrew the subsidy from diesel and kerosene remaining just petrol and still it is claiming that the subsidy is on the increase.” In a recent bulletin to counter government position on subsidy, Labour argued that “the whole ‘no-more-subsidy’ argument of government collapses when we look at the components of the subsidy. This is where the nation is daily ripped off and where a government that ought to be ashamed because it is unable to protect the interests of its people cannot be allowed to get away with its irresponsibility and complicity. “The main elements of subsidy arise from production costs, demurrage and landing costs. Although the demand for PMS is about 31 million litres per day, the combined production of the three refineries even if they were producing 100 percent of installed capacity would be around 18 million litres. However, owing to government’s own ineptitude, these refineries now produce about 6 million litres leaving a huge demand gap of some 25 million litres. To meet this demand gap, government contracted companies in Spain which is not an oil producing country, to refine petroleum products for the Nigerian market. Given the fact that Spain is not an oil producing country, the cost of refining there are higher than what obtains in countries that have domesticated technology for refining oil because they produce crude oil. These higher costs are passed on to Nigerians as subsidy.” Tags: government, high, labour, nigeria, petrol, sell |
Outgoing Inspector General of Police, Mike Okiro, has described his alleged indebtedness to a failed bank to the tune of N161 million, as cheap blackmail and a deliberate ploy by the Nigerian Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) to tarnish his reputation. Okiro, who spoke at a valedictory session with senior police officers from police formations across the country on Thursday, blamed his present travails on acts of vendetta by former NDIC boss, Mr. Ganiyu Ogunleye, whom he investigated and exposed his alleged corruption acts, as helmsman of the NDIC. In a voice laden with emotions, Okiro lamented that rather than being vilified, the NDIC is indeed indebted to him to the tune $2.5m. Okiro, who expressed joy and gratitude to God for the opportunity granted him to serve at the apex level of his career explained further that the business transaction was his wife’s company having got a contract from Agip Oil Company amounting to 4 million pounds and that the money was paid into former National Bank before it got liquidated. According to him, “this is one of the hazards of public office. No matter how you try to keep yourself clean, some people will still try to throw mud on you. Some people think if you are a public officer, you cannot serve and go unblemished but this is not the case. He narrated further: “My wife was at that time working in a bank and she was being transferred here and there. “I eventually asked her to resign and she floated a company by the name Hekiro Nigeria Limited in 1999 and got a contract with Agip Oil Company by year 2000 for about $4m. She obtained a loan of about $2 million from Lead Bank because Agip didn’t pay her mobilization fee. They wanted her to complete the job before payment,” Okiro said. The IGP explained that at the time the money for the contract was paid after completion, it was paid into his wife’s company account in National Bank before it went under and NDIC had not paid him the money up till now. However, NDIC said it had, through a letter dated July 20, given the outgoing IGP 48 hours within which to repay the sum. The letter, with reference number OOC/ABJ01/07/09 and signed by NDIC’s lawyer, Mr. Okunade Olorundare (SAN), the police boss risked being dragged before any of the anti-graft agencies in the country and the Code of Conduct Tribunal if he failed to comply with the payment period. Going by the date of the letter, which was released to journalists on Wednesday in Abuja, the period of payment expired on Wednesday. The corporation alleged that Okiro secured the facilities between 2000 and 2001to finance a pipeline laying contract that the family business, Hekiro Nigeria Limited, won from the Agip Oil Company. NDIC went further to accuse Okiro of abuse of office and a breach of the Code of Conduct for public officers by using his office to secure the contract. |
