Autos › Re: Naira Gain Against The US Dollar: What Will Happen To Greedy Car Dealers? by saintjoel(m): 2:48pm On Mar 25, 2017 |
JohnXcel: Saintjoel I'd like your input on this. Hmm, I will say that the dealers have no blame in this issue. When you consider the reality that most of them have to source for dollars from the black market at exorbitant rates and you also have to consider shipping charges, that alone rose to N650,000 (1,500$) alone when dollar was N450 - 1$. There's also custom duty and port charge like demmurage too to consider, clearing a car manufactured in 1999 may cost almost N450,000 to clear. Now add N650,000 + N450,000 to the original cost of the vehicle in dollars, you'll see why dealers try to sell at those rates to meet up, who wants his/her business to collapse just because clients want cheap cars but government policies aren't making it possible. I agree that it's not good when you buy at a lower rate and you sell at higher rates but my question is this, will banks give special considerations to you when next you want to buy dollars just because you sold your cars at a lower rate. I'm not holding brief for any Car Dealer but common sense dictates that you use any means to protect what brings food to your table. Also take into consideration that many of the cars advertised in websites are advertised by second or third level dealers, many of them aren't firsthand owners, most of the car lots you see around have different people investing into it,they're the originals owners and importers while others are just marketers, so a profit margin has to be added. Thats how car dealerships operate throughout the world. |

bassman2017: Please Jelad, I want to Know What I can do if I have a FAKE customs document. I bought a Nigerian used Honda Accord 2008 in 2016 from a dealer in abuja, all the custom documents attached does not have a date, the C Number is not clear, At the point of buying the vehicle I did not pay attention to all these details. On the document I have it says port of Entry was Tincan, Apapa , Duty paid 177,910
Please let me know of what it may cost to carry out remedial action. I am just confused Good morning sir, we need to first accertain if the the papers are fake, have you gone through the papers and you're so sure that there's no date on it. N177,000 is quite low for a 2008 Honda accord but my advice is this, you can go to the nearest CAC to have your duty papers done for you but note that we now use TINCAN tariff because the borders have been shut down. You may end up spending almost N650,000. |

saintjoel: BREAKING: Ali arrives n’assembly, holds private meeting with Saraki
Senate President Bukola Saraki is at present meeting with Hameed Ali, comptroller-general of the Nigeria customs service (NCS), in his office at the national assembly complex.
Ali arrived at the senate wing of the national assembly complex a few minutes before 6pm.
This is coming a few hours after the senate reaffirmed its resolution to summon him over the customs’ planned seizure of vehicles without paid duty.
The senate had asked him to appear before it in a customs uniform. But Ali wrote to the senate president, saying he was still seeking legal advice on the matter.
He also said he would not be available on Wednesday because he is bereaved. But TheCable learnt that President Muhammadu Buhari had directed him to answer to the summons.
****** YOU CAN RELY ON JELAD VENTURES FOR MORE UPDATES. MOTOR DUTY PAYMENT PUT ON HOLD Following the unnecessary tension generated as a result of misconception and misrepresentation of the Nigeria Customs Service planned motor duty payment, the leadership of the National Assembly and the Comptroller-General of Customs, Col. Hameed Ali (Rtd) met with a view to resolving the impasse. They both agreed that the proposed motor duty payment, though in line with the provision of Customs and Excise Management Act (CEMA) Cap C.45, LFN 2004 should be put on hold while the Senate Committee on Customs & Excise interfaces with the NCS for further discussions. 2. While payment of duty on vehicles or indeed any dutiable imported item remains a civic responsibility of every patriotic Nigerian, NCS Management has directed that the exercise be put on hold while expressing readiness to engage the Senate Committee on further discussions to bring them on board to understand the importance of the exercise to national security and economy. BRIGADIER GENERAL SAMUEL ANGO WAS ALSO FROM THE MILITARY WHEN HE HEAD CUSTOMS BUT HE WAS CALLED A SOLE ADMINISTRATOR.
***** KINDLY NOTE THE DIFFERENCE :-
A COMPTROLLER GENERAL IS EXPECTED TO WEAR A UNIFORM BECAUSE IT HAS BEEN ASSUMED THAT HE ROSE THROUGH THE RANKS.
A " DIRECTOR OF SERVICE " OR " SOLE ADMINISTRATOR " IS NOT EXPECTED TO PUT ON A UNIFORM BECAUSE HE CAME FROM ANOTHER SERVICE OR HE IS A CIVILIAN.
***** HAMED ALLI SHOULD HAVE BEEN APPOINTED AS A SOLE ADMINISTRATOR, WHICH MAKES HIM SUBJECT TO THE PRESIDENT ALONE AND DOESN'T TRANSLATE TO PUTTING ON A UNIFORM. With these, I rest my case. Alli has done a great job so far in my assessment as an AGENT, his policies would have been beneficial especially the one month programme about DUTY payment cos it would have gone a long way in checking smuggling and also hastened the opening of land borders for vehicle importation. He only made some mistakes like sacking, retiring and transfering of officers with board approval and also didn't allow The Minister of finance play her over sight role. Thanks. |

saintjoel: BEING UPDATE OF GRACE PERIOD FOR AUTO DUTY PAYMENT BY AC JOSEPH ATTAH, NCS Ag. PUBLIC RELATIONS OFFICER ON WEDNESDAY 8TH MARCH, 2017
Gentlemen of the Press.
In response to public complains and suggestions, the Comptroller-General of Customs, Col. Hameed Ibrahim Ali (Rtd) has approved the adjustment of points of payment and 60% rebate across board from 2015 downward to ease the process and encourage all motor dealers in position of uncustomed vehicles to come forward and pay duty.
2. While the grace period remains Monday 13th March to Wednesday 12th April, the points of payments with the exception of Lagos and Port Harcourt will now be the nearest Customs Area Command.
3. Motor dealers in Lagos are to pay their duties at Zone ‘A’ Headquarters, No. 1 Harvey Road, Yaba and Federal Operations Unit, Zone ‘A’, Ikeja. While in Port Harcourt, auto duty payment will be at Zone ‘C’ Headquarters, Nigeria Ports Authority.
4. In the same vein, private vehicle owners who know that duty has not been paid on their vehicles could take advantage of this grace period to do so, therefore owners of such vehicles or their representatives are expected to go to the nearest pay-point for assessment and payment. It should however be noted that the 60% rebate applies only within the grace period.
5. For the avoidance of doubt, the decision to grant a grace period for auto duty payment was not a sudden and arbitrary one, but a product of consultations and long standing engagement with Leadership of Association of Motor Dealers of Nigeria (AMDON) who pleaded for a “window” to pay duty on all uncustomed vehicles within the Country before the ban on vehicle importation through land borders.
6. Note worthy also is the ongoing collaboration with the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO) and Nigeria Police Force (NPF) in the Vehicles Identification Number (VIN) Project which is another bold step by the Service to boost revenue and enhance national security. The benefit of this collaboration is that those who do not pay duty on their vehicles will not be able to obtain licence and register them in Nigeria. We believe that when all vehicles are properly registered and owners’ identities tied to them, National Security will be enhanced.
7. While expecting Motor dealers and indeed private owners of smuggled vehicles within the Country to use this grace period to pay duty, it should be noted that the Service will intensify its statutory functions of anti-smuggling operation with a view to seizing and prosecuting owners of uncustomed vehicles and other goods.
**** JELAD VENTURES HAD A MEETING WITH CUSTOMS JUST NOW AND THEY'RE DEMANDING FOR PHYICAL CHECKS ON VEHICLES BEFORE THEY CAN BE REGISTERED. TO SAVE COST AND TIME, AN AGREEMENT HAS BEEN REACHED THAT PHYSICAL INSPECTIONS CAN BE DONE IN ANY OTHER PLACE APART FROM THEIR OFFICE PREMISES AND NEGOTIATIONS ARE PERMITTED AS LONG AS PAYMENT MEETS THEIR REQUIREMENTS,VEHICLES MUST ALSO BE WITHIN LAGOS WHILE VEHICLES OUTSIDE LAGOS MUST PRODUCE VEHICLE REGISTRATION PAPERS,THANKS.

saintjoel: Good morning Nairalanders,
There's a meeting scheduled for 10am between our agency and customs. If you've anu questions you want to ask, kindly send SMS / whatsapp messages to 08062948193,thanks. BEING UPDATE OF GRACE PERIOD FOR AUTO DUTY PAYMENT BY AC JOSEPH ATTAH, NCS Ag. PUBLIC RELATIONS OFFICER ON WEDNESDAY 8TH MARCH, 2017 Gentlemen of the Press. ***///// IT'S ALSO IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT A PHYSICAL INSPECTION WILL PAY THE IMPORTERS/END USERS. IF A PHYSICAL INSPECTION IS CARRIED OUT, YOU CAN TIE WHATEVER THAT HAPPENS AFTER THE INSPECTION AND PAYMENT TO THE OFFICERS THAT DID THE INSPECTION. |

etenyong: Thank you sir, how much will it cost to get d paper for Honda Civic 2001 model. Do I need to ask for d custom paper from the person that sold it for me? Or am to get new one? Thanks for your respond Sir, the duty procurement is going to be determined by the number of years it has spent in Nigeria. Two, if you want me to be sincere with you sir, I can't take any decision for you. The decision to get new documents and the way you plan to get them lie in your hand sir. |

saintjoel: Sequel to this, the 60% rebate is still been worked on and we'll have updates soon. The rebate needs to be worked on so that we don't fall short and also take importers out of the frying pan only to land them inside fire.
Updates on the 60% rebate will be posted soon.
*** PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE'S GOING TO BE A POSSIBILITY OF CUSTOMS DEMANDING FOR PHYICAL CHECKS OF VEHICLES AND REGISTRATION PAPERS. THIS IS TO PREVENT PEOPLE FROM BRINGING IN FRESH VEHICLES IN THROUGH THE BORDER LIKE SOME ARE BUSY ADVERTISING ON NAIRALAND AND SOME OTHER BLOGS/WEBSITES.
LAND BORDERS STILL REMAIN SHUT TILL FURTHER NOTICE. ANYONE TRYING TO IMPORT WITH CLAIMS OF "LAGOS PAPERS" FOR COTONOU CARS IS A SCAMMER. |

Flooerin: I've read all comments so far but nobody has talked about loss of document. How do you verify a car that the documents can not be found? From the directive, any clean looking car can be stopped and checked even if the car is older than 7 years in Nigeria. The policy is just not thorough in its application. This policy can only work on new cars. The C-number is not authentic enough as a basis for checking. I've seen incorrect imputation of VIN on custom paper and if such go for a check, the result will be invalid. Customs should also be divested from the border for they are the main culprit when it comes to smuggling. A vehicle that have changed owner 3 or 4 times only for custom to come up with this, who pays the duty? Abeg they should just cool down. Mbok. Let me first clear this with you sir. A c-number is used to differentiate between last digits of a chassis of a car to another. Incorrect imputation of vin can be rectified if the year was stated in the declaration. As an AGENT,,I once had an instance when a car was released from tincan and custom patrols did not detect that a digit was missing from the vin till when it got to benin-auchi bypass. The owner was held and he called me, I had to travel all the way to ore, collect the papers, take them back to tincan with the b.o.l as proof and it was rectified but it can never be done with a false declaration. If a 2015 car was dclared as 2005, that's a different case entirely. All you can do is opt for a D.N,boost the payment and get the correct vin registered. The c-number is solid proof as against the days of manual input for vehicles and ETLS. About the loss of papers, I sometimes recommend an affidavit but what has spoilt the whole show is just that some dealers now saddle end users with smuggled vehicles with the pretext that the papers where lost, so customs now find it hard to believe such people. I will recommend a court affidavit and "SOLID" proof that the car was registered in Nigeria seven or eight years ago. Although we agents are still working with customs on the modalities but for now, you can still use those papers. If you and the former owner can also reach any agreement or you can afford new papers on your own, you can go ahead to process new papers too. https://www.nairaland.com/2208157/verify-custom-duty-papers-rectify |
