Also payment terms like payment before blowing, half pay for attempting to blow etc how safe is it to blow whistle on smugglers? @saintjoel OGA, hope you've access to the entire seal team six and their entire armoury. rottenegg: Quick question. My 1998 Passat was brought in illegally via bush and fake papers were given to me...how can this be remedied? Can you get it done? At what cost? If you can and don't want to say it here, just answer yes and I'll call you....but I think its good an answer is given here because lots of people in Lagos have this issue. Thanks
I also don't mind authentic referrals from you for good agents in case you don't do this Nothing stops me from answering you on this thread, since I'm not into illegal deals. You've two options for duty payment. One is through the kwara border which might stop Operations in the next one or two weeks, the second option is using the tincan tariff which can be processed at the f.o.u command in Ikeja. If done though kwara, it'll cost N280,000. If we do it with tincan tariff, it's going to cost N350,000. ***** PLEASE NOTE THAT THE TARIFF ACCORDING TO THE FEDERAL MINISTRY OF FINANCE STARTS FROM 2002 PRESENTLY. SO, THE FIGURES GIVEN ARE BASED ON WHAT A 2002 PASSAT WILL PAY AS DUTY. |

Car Talk › Customs Urges Nigerians To See Smuggling As Crime by saintjoel(op): 8:10am On Apr 18, 2017 |
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has urged Nigerians to see smuggling as a crime and support it to succeed in the war against smugglers.
Customs Public Relations Officer, Joseph Attah, made the appeal on Monday in Abuja.
He said that the service’s anti-smuggling strategy was yielding positive dividend, adding that in the past three months, the service had seized 136,506 bags of rice.
“All Nigerians should see smuggling as a crime so that they will support the service to succeed in our ongoing war against smugglers.
“Seeing smuggling as a crime means that you will be willing to give creditable information that will help us succeed.
“As villagers that live around border line, they should be willing to support customs officers whenever they make seizures and they are encountering some difficulties, rather than supporting the smugglers against customs
“In Nigeria when a thief is arrested or an armed robber is arrested, you hardly get to see people going to beg for them.
“But today when a smuggler is arrested you see Nigerians, including some respected ones in our society, coming to beg for such persons to be released because they don’t see smuggling as a crime; they see it as a trade,” Attah said.
He said that some Nigerians often times accused the NCS of not doing enough in its service delivery, adding that it was wrong for people to think that a smuggler could only be successful when supported in active connivance by customs officers.
According to him, smugglers now take advantage of the porous borders, adding that oftentimes they are supported by villagers at the border line and unpatriotic well to do individuals in carrying out their smuggling activities.
“NCS cannot 100 percent vouch for its officers like any other human organisation; it is totally wrong to suggest that every criminal activity must be with the connivance of an operative,” he added.
Attah said that the service would remain focused on its statutory function of enforcing government policies rather than being distracted by the blame game.
He said, “In our continuous efforts to suppress smuggling, information, suggestions that can help the service to perform better are welcome from well meaning individuals or organisation.”

Car Talk › Re: Customs' Duty Suspension by saintjoel(m): 12:22pm On Apr 15, 2017 |
OlugbengaE: Its called Vehicle Identification Number. That should be the only thing used to process everything.
From the way you talk the process is not transparent and has many loopholes. I hope you didnt miss the part where I stated that c number isn't used for vehicles alone. It's also used for ETLS. If I've a cargo of cocoa coming coming into the country and another importer has the same quantity of cocoa, how will customs differentiate each shipment without the use of a c number. The introduction of a c number has made shipment easier than ever with blood holes whatsoever, the only thing you can do is under-value or outside exit and immediately your c number is punched into the system, your atrocities will be shown on the screen. It's called a "customs reference number " but shortened to c number. |
Car Talk › Re: Customs' Duty Suspension by saintjoel(m): 12:14pm On Apr 15, 2017 |
SmartchoicesNG: Ok... But no two vin numbers are exactly the same Unfortunately in a scenario where the last six digits are used, two or more vehicles can have the same last six digits. If it's the complete seventeen digits, they can never be the same but with the last six digits, several vehicles can have the same. JHLRD 78803C800305 - 2003 CRV Jhlrd78805c800305 - 2005 CRV. In the vins above, if the last six digits are used, how do they differantiate 03 from 05. The use of the complete vin just started with vehicles coming in this year and it has not been fully enforced. |
Car Talk › Re: Customs' Duty Suspension by saintjoel(m): 11:32am On Apr 15, 2017 |
SmartchoicesNG: They should be able to use vin Imagine when you mistakenly scratch out two OR three digits of a recharge pin and you call the customer care helpline, what they ask for is the serial number, technically that's how the c number works. Customs use the last six digits of your vin for entries, what differentiates your last six digits from any other last six digits is the c number, what differentiates YOIR port of entry from another is the command code and c number. Please note that c number is not used for vehicles alone, it's also used for general goods known as ETLS. Once your entry is captured, a c number is automatically allocated and it can't be used by any other entry again. |

Car Talk › Re: Customs' Duty Suspension by saintjoel(m): 7:37am On Apr 15, 2017 |
Itulah: You may proceed if you have close to 600-700k to bail yourself and pay for new Duty. 17th of last month, I took my two weeks old newly registered Camry 2007 Muscle from Zaria to Lagos, the journey was sweet and smooth, two days later, while making a return from Lagos, I decided to travel through Benin Edo state so I can buy those fresh oil and garri at Ewu junction, it was at Ondo-Ore road that those merciless lawless Custom dude nabbed my ride, drove me and the vehicle from that Lagos highway to their office in Akure. I had to pass the night in Akure cause it was Sunday. The following day, Monday, guess how much I was billed? N600k, penalty and Duty Certificate. Actual duty is 250k only God knows where the rest of the money went to. What they only wrote was what we call a "surface duty".The remaining calculation of how the money was spent is actually written in your d.n copy. If you had contacted an AGENT to represent you, he/she would've have pushed for the total duty to be written on the duty certificate. But you're in luck, with this D.N copy, no officer can stop you again cos it's raised just once according to constitution even if you underpaid. We sometimes do it for fresh entries, we first underpay them raise a D. N to boost the payment, no officer will even bother to disturb you, they'll only ask for "officer on duty". |
Car Talk › Re: Customs' Duty Suspension by saintjoel(m): 7:27am On Apr 15, 2017 |
saintjoel: Technically, customs will still turn you around on the rebate thing unless they know about valuation or have worked with a valuation unit. Been a custom officer doesn't mean that you must know how to calculate values, the best option you would've done was to ask for their valuation and legal department, talk to them and let them raise your D. N for you. Or you can get an experienced agent to represent you. Ordinarily, you'll have spent up to N600,000 - N650,000 if your car came in through the port and it wasn't undervalued. |
Car Talk › Re: Customs' Duty Suspension by saintjoel(m): 7:26am On Apr 15, 2017 |
OlugbengaE: This is what happened. Normally if you had discovered your car had no duty and opted to pay. They will calculate you duty which is that 600k then give you a 60% rebate or discount you will pay around 250k. So instead of giving you the 60% discount they gave themselves the discount. Next time ask for discount. But on a good day the duty on 07 camry is not up to 600k. Technically, customs will still turn you around on the rebate thing unless they know about valuation or have worked with a valuation unit. Been a custom officer doesn't mean that you must know how to calculate values, the best option you would've done was to ask for their valuation and legal department, talk to them and let them raise your D. adeolaademuluyi: What happens if the vehicle was actually in customs database but duty was underpaid? It depends on the year the duty was paid. If it was paid within the last two years, a D. N can be raised. What happens is that the actual amount you're supposed to pay is checked and the initial amount you paid will be deducted of your papers are genuine, then you pay the balance. |

saintjoel: SIMPLE STEPS TO IMPORT GOODS INTO NIGERIA AND DOCUMENTS YOU NEED.
The import process in Nigeria involves a number of steps which are enumerated below:
Ensure you obtain a Tax Identification Number (TIN) from the Federal Inland Revenue Services (FIRS).Select a bank of choice in Nigeria to act as your Authorised Dealer Bank (ADB). This is the bank that will process your Form M.Obtain regulatory certificates from SON or NAFDAC as the case may be for items that are regulated.Open Form M on the Nigerian Trade Platform (Single Window system) attaching the required documents such as insurance certificate, proforma invoice and the product certificate.Submit the listed documents to the ADB.Get a shipper to send the cargo over through a shipping line or air cargo.Once your bank processes your Form M, Customs will issue a pre-arrival assessment report (PAAR), which you will use to commence the clearance of your cargo.Once your goods arrive and they are cleared, get a truck to move them to your destination of choice.Be sure to check Customs website to avoid importing contraband goods that will be seized on arrival.
4 documents you must have to import goods into Nigeria.
If you’re importing goods into Nigeria, ensure to obtain the following documents, which will be required to clear your consignment at the port upon arrival:
Form M: This is issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria through commercial banks for import permit procedures. The form states the product’s Harmonized Codes for Customs duty, the amount and other basic information.
Insurance certificate: You may approach any reputable insurance company for this certificate to cover loss or damage during shipment. Insurance is compulsory for import and export.
Bill of Lading: This is issued by the shipping company transporting the goods from the port of loading to the port of destination.
Commercial or proforma invoice: It is always issued by the seller or shipper of the goods. |
