EducationNigerian University Wins Runner Up Position At Manfredmoot Court Competition. by Saintsammy59(op): 10:25am On Oct 25, 2019
BREAKING: The team representing Africa wins runner-up position at the Manfred Lachs Moot Court Competition held at the NASA Headquarters on the sidelines of the International Astronautical Congress 2019 in Washington, D.C.

Representing Africa were students from the International Law Students Association (ILSA) of the University of Calabar, Nigeria: Ebruka Nelly-Helen Neji, and Ushie Augustine Eneji (Ushie Augustine Eneji won the best oralist award). They competed against the winners of the European Regional Rounds comprising of Katja Grunfeld and Iva Ramus from the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia.

The UNICAL team on Tuesday triumphed over their challengers from North America represented by the McGill University team during the Semil Final rounds of the global contest to book a spot in the finals.

The teams argued a Case Concerning Military Uses of Space Resources by hypothetical states of Suniza vs Azazi over disputes arising space exploration. -Additional issues are presented- regarding the use of abandoned lunar facilities and liability for damages resulting from an explosion on the Moon.

The parties have agreed to submit their dispute to the International Court of Justice for resolution. The judges were Joan Donoghue, Peter Tomka and Kirill Gevorgian who are judges of the International Court of Justice.

Annually, the European Center for Space Law (ECSL) and the International Institute of Space Law (IISL) organizes the Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Court Competition, with over 60 teams participating. The Africa Regional Round was hosted in Pretoria, South Africa by the Aerospace Industry Support Initiative (AISI), an initiative of the South African Department of Trade and Industry managed by the CSIR (Council for Scientific and Industrial Research) where 9 universities from three countries in Africa participated and the University of Calabar took the first position.

The aims of the Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Court Competition is to promote the interest, involvement and knowledge of space law among students by providing a fair and competitive environment for the exchange of thoughts and the deepening of understanding of space law.

This competition encourages further development on the subject matter of space law in the curriculum of academic institutions and assists participating countries in developing technical legal capacity by preparing the next generation of space lawyers.

The Competition is a platform for the students to put the analysis, drafting, presentation and arguing skills of an upcoming lawyer to the test.

Congratulations!!!

LOL. It's quite unfortunate. And such students want to be leaders of tomorrow. We have not shown responsibility today in a simple (albeit tough) task as studying (for our own good) but we want to be senators and governors.

Ah I doff my hat for SDC. Those guys and UI's regular 'Tsunami' list are landmark achievements that still instill in students fear especially with regards to their conduct.

Hope you are having a 'swell' time at UI? It does seem to get 'somehow' at pg level from tales related to me by acquaintances.

Kind regards.

I studied same course in the same institution, Uniport. My problem was that I was always reading foreign literatures or texts. I preferred them than the ones written by those wicked lecturers. Although I used to read their own texts also, but I had preference for foreign books. Foreign authors have wider scope than them.

My people, I must tell you guys the truth... I was so bookish. I studied so much that a friend told me that with what I am doing if I do not have a First Class that he would stop studying or reading. Yet, my people, I came out with a Second Class Lower with so much struggling and prayers o. I later realized that Nigeria lecturers would want you to give them what they have given you, whether outdated or current. In fact, to them it is an affront or insult for you to come up with your own ideas, theories, hypothesis or fact, let alone foreign ideas. Even my project supervisor, a prof. saw my work and was forcing me to deny or disclaim my work. In the presence of many people, he checked my work and told me point blank that this can't come from a student of this school. That was exactly when I realized that most of them hardly crave for more knowledge the moment they get to certain height. Pride will not even allow them. I refused to deny my work and he refused to supervise me.... To cut the long story short. I actually fasted for over one week before God intervened. It was my first biggest miracle in life.

Now, the penalty of not reading or following their literatures is that I came out with a Second Class Lower. But the rewards of not reading their literatures are that my understanding of life is wider and deeper. Five years after graduation most of the things I read are still fresh in my mind and I still use them in my daily life, relationship, and profession. Bjj
