A redirection of Igbo's economic dynamism in Lagos + the kicking off, of Africa continental free trade area by the first of January 2021 is economically not a good news for the SW period.
"Sai Baba". Why must you think in such a backward manner? You sound like you are waiting for Lagos to retrogress while other states are opening up. I can't help but agree with the Op. I think Nigerians can generally have a high tendency to be very lawless in other countries if allowed. Maybe Ghanaians themselves encouraged the flouting of their own laws initially when they deemed it harmless. But apparently they are now feeling threatened that if something is not done their local retail markets could be overrun by Nigerians who may be coming in with funds being sourced from questionable sources that their local retailers can't compete with. In light of that I can't say I blame them for protecting their turf. If every country simply allows foreigners free reign to come in and compete in their markets without certain restrictions, many countries would be overrun by foreigners in no time. There is nothing like absolute free trade anywhere in the world. Let's not be naive. Even the developed countries have protectionist policies that protect certain sectors of their local markets/economy, so let's be guided. afube: What you posted here is absolute drivel, you are the ignorant one.The ecowas protocols, which Ghana and Nigeria have ratified and domesticated supercedes that local Ghanaian laws. Please do not exhibit your ignorance here. When he fell out with thiefnuubu,he suddenly became a non-performer. I jus de laugh all of una Who are 'you guys' you are referring to? Point out a post or comment where my handle participated in the your allegation. To put things in perspective, Ambode's matter was clearly an internal party/political issue. He ended up losing his party primary and his successor still went ahead and won the general election. Candidates are products of their party's internal mechanism, the party then presents them to the electorate to represent them in the general election. Any governor that fails to secure his party's ticket doesn't stand a chance of representing such a party in the general elections. Ambode lost his party primary that would have enabled him represent his party in the governorship election which is an indication that he wasn't popular enough within the party to represent them. Obaseki also had issues within the state chapter of his party and that ultimately cost him APC ticket. He, like Ambode, failed to properly manage the internal intrigues of party politics. No big deal. He chose to exit the party and try his luck elsewhere. You are the one making it sound like every governor must always win their party's nomination for second term. If a party feels a governor's second term ambition will put it at a disadvantage, it can use its internal mechanism to present another candidate that it feels more confident about. |

'Humiliation of a sitting governor' you say? What manner of nonsense talk is the Op blabbing about. You're making it sound like an automatic second term ticket is a must for every governor. Look here, in a true democracy, every sitting governor must be willing to compete for his second term ticket. Reelection should be based on performance and willingness of the electorate to reelect you not just because you're a sitting governor. What the Op is advocating for is responsible for the imposition of non-performing governors like Ikpeazu as deserving of a second tenure in spite of their clear non-performance. Don't let partisan political affiliation blind you from common sense. |
Crime › Two Nigerians Arrested In Ghana For Kidnapping And Human Trafficking by Sakamaje(op): 4:12pm On Jul 14, 2020 |
The Central Regional Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (AHT) of the Ghana Police Service (GPS) has arrested two Nigerians at Gomoa Pomadze on suspicion of kidnapping and human trafficking.
According to police, the suspects, Paul Okafor and Duru Favour, are said to be engaged in kidnapping and trafficking of young Nigerians to perpetrate cyber-crime activities in the country.
Briefing the Ghana News Agency (GNA), DSP Irene Oppong, Regional Police Public Relations Officer and Head of the AHTU, said 39 victims, all Nigerians in their twenties, were rescued in the process.
She said on Sunday, July 12, at about 1100 hours, the Winneba District Police Command, acting on information, dispatched a Police Patrol team to Gomoa Pomadze, where they met a 21-year old Nigerian, Charles Ikorohk in the company of three Ghanaians.
She said Ikorohk told the Police team that he arrived in the country from Nigeria on Wednesday, January 22, to visit a friend but could not trace him.
He said he got stranded in Accra where he met one Uzo at the Kwame Nkrumah interchange area, who later introduced him to one Arisuezo, also a Nigerian.
She said Arisuezo brought Ikorohk to Winneba and kept him in a walled house together with other young men from Nigerian.
According to DSP Oppong, Arisuezo prevented his captives from leaving the compound and subjected them to all forms of inhuman treatment and also engaged them in cyber-crime activities.
She said Charles managed to escape on Sunday, July 12 about 0800 hours when he was tasked to weed the compound of the house while their supervisors went out with one of the victims to a Mobile money vendor to withdraw some cash fraudulently received.
She said the police, after receiving a tip-off, quickly went to the house and rescued the 39 Nigerians and arrested the suspects.
Thirty-six laptops were also retrieved from the house. DSP Oppong said the owner of the house was arrested and given a police enquiry bail while investigations were ongoing to arrest Michael Arisuezo and his other accomplices. http://saharareporters.com/2020/07/14/two-nigerians-arrested-ghana-alleged-kidnapping-trafficking

Politics › Olu Falae: Yoruba Is The Glue Holding Nigeria Together by Sakamaje(op): 8:36am On Jul 14, 2020 |
ON JULY 14, 2020
By Dapo Akinrefon, Deputy South-West Editor
Elder statesman, Chief Olu Falae, has said Yorubaland is the glue holding Nigeria together, invested a lot to maintain peace in the country and, therefore, cannot be talking of secession.
Falae, a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Minister of Finance, Director for Economic Planning, and Managing Director of a bank, spoke to Vanguard, in an interview, noting that when insecurity or crisis displaces Nigerians, they find solace in the South-West.
He described Yorubaland as “the refugee camp of Nigeria… where everybody is accepted and looked after.”
According to him, “we have invested, perhaps, more than most groups in Nigeria. To prove my point, if there is a crisis in the East today, where do people rush to? The South-West. If there is a crisis in the North, where will they run to? The South-West.
“This is the refugee camp of Nigeria. This is where everybody is welcome, accepted and looked after. That is the investment of peace we have been making from time immemorial.
“Yorubaland has been the glue that holds Nigeria. If the South-West says it wants to secede, the Middle-Belt will fight us because they see the Yoruba as the cement that holds Nigeria.
“During the Civil War, when the Igbo went home, Governor Mobolaji Johnson looked after their property for them. Rents were in the banks and when they returned, their money was given to them to start life all over again.
“That is a fact. But the property they left in Port Harcourt were taken over by their neighbours and it took several years before some of them were returned to the owners.
“We have demonstrated that we are the most accommodating, we are the cementing culture in Nigeria. So, there is no way we can secede. This is our home." https://www.vanguardngr.com/2020/07/yoruba-is-the-glue-holding-nigeria-together-olu-falae/

https://www.insideoyo.com/makinde-others-plotting-to-remove-secondus-south-west-pdp-state-chairmen-allege/June 25, 2020
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chairmen in four South West States have called on the party’s National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, to intervene in what they described as simmering crisis being propelled by the ambition of the former National Vice Chairman of the party, Chief Olabode George and the party’s current caretaker Chairman in Ekiti State,Senator Hosea Agboola, to become National Chairman and National Vice Chairman respectively. The Chairmen, in a letter dated June 19, 2020, and addressed to the party’s National Chairman, Secondus, frowned at last Friday’s South West stakeholders meeting of the party, held in Ibadan, noting that the meeting was unilaterally summoned by Governor Seyi Makinde, with no recourse whatsoever to the Zonal Executive of the party. The letter which was signed by Hon. Deji Doherty; Engr. Clement Faboyede; Dr. Sikirulai Olawale Ogundele and Elder Sunday Akanfe; Chairmen of Lagos; Ondo; Ogun and Osun States respectively, alleged that Makinde was supporting the plot to remove Secondus as PDP National Chairman. “We the undersigned are party Chairmen in States of the South West Zone and we feel duty bound to alert you on the need to forestall the festering of any crisis in the South West zone of the party.
“This action becomes necessary in view of the new schism rearing its head in our zone. It is our immediate concern to ensure that all hands are on deck to halt the growth of needless crisis that will negatively affect the health of our party in the South West Zone.
“In this respect, we take due notice of the invitation to a purported South West Zone meeting which held on Friday, 19th June 2020 unilaterally summoned by His Excellency, Engr Oluseyi Makinde, with no recourse whatsoever to the Zonal Executive. This development if not arrested may signal the beginning of terrible developments in our zone.
“We are also aware that factors propelling the simmering crisis included the ambition of Chief Olabode George to become National Chairman at all cost and also that of Senator Hosea Agboola, current caretaker Chairman of Ekiti State to become National Vice Chairman.
These two men are exploring their closeness to Governor Seyi Makinde to prosecute inordinate ambition at the expense of the existing amity and understanding within the South West Zone which is currently being disrupted for this reason.
“We urge the National Working Committee to take immediate action geared at forestalling unnecessary crisis in our Zone by calling the aforementioned men to order and educate them on the need to play by the rules and not create any trouble in the zone.
“We also wish to place it on record our confidence in the Zonal Caretaker Committee to discharge its constitutional responsibilities exquisitely and will always support them in this regard.
“Our interest is majorly to ensure that our party is insulated from any unnecessary crisis and therefore urge Your Excellency to take immediate actions in this respect,” the statement said. Mynd44 Lalasticlala |
Politics › Edo 2020: PDP Aspirants, Stalwarts Resist Obaseki by Sakamaje(op): 6:58pm On Jun 13, 2020 |
…Governor meets aides, consider options
By Ozioruva Aliu
BENIN CITY – THERE is a sharp division among the ranks of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State over plans by Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo state to defect to the party and clinch the ticket to contest the September 19, 2020 governorship election.
This move by Obaseki is after his All Progressives Congress (APC) disqualified him from contesting its governorship primary election fixed for June 22 because of alleged inconsistencies in the documents he was said to have submitted.
Vanguard gathered that the said meeting by the PDP would involve all the local government area chairmen of the party and other leaders of the party.
However, as at the time of filing this report, the meeting was yet to hold but Vanguard gathered that there is sharp resistance from some aspirants and other former members of the exco.
One of the leading aspirants told Vanguard that “I will personally resist it. There are so many questions to ask. Did Obaseki purchase nomination form of his party, yes; did he appear before the screening processes of his party, the answer yes. What happened? He was disqualified. Now when was the closing date for the purchase of PDP form? Did Obaseki buy, did he appear before the screening? So the whole thing doesn’t add up and I will resist it. I learnt he has met with the National Leadership of our party but we are waiting for him.”
In another development, a staunch supporter of one of the aspirants who is the member representing Oredo Federal Constituency where Obaseki comes from, Hon Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama referred to the case of Obaseki as that of a “rotten tomato that no one can buy. How can our party be thinking of giving him a ticket, for me, it shows we are no serious. How can they be thinking of an aspirant who was disqualified by his party over issues that can be challenged in court? ”.
A source close to the Ogbeide-Ihama campaign team said he and his supporters are not disposed to agreeing on any compromiser to bring Obaseki into the party.
It was gathered that about three PDP governors in the South-South who are said to have issues with Oshiomhole are ready to support Obaseki to win the election and bring back Edo into PDP.
Edo Poll: APC Reps caucus backs Ize-Iyamu
There were indications that Obaseki would address the press Saturday after his meeting but a source said: “he met with his team and all the issues were laid on the table, they agreed that he should consider all the available alternative political parties to consider which one to go”
A statement by the Edo State Chapter of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON) described the disqualification of Obaseki as a ” profound affront ” on decent democratic practices.
A statement which was issued by ALGON Chairman, Hon. Jenkins Evbareke Osunde, noted that the Screening Committee “violently desecrated the principles and the spirit of the APC Constitution regarding the procedural exercise for interested gubernatorial aspirants.
“The attempt to disqualify a popular and accomplished Governor by the Committee was a despicable mockery and shameful tragic comedy staged on behalf of an APC national cabal with a sinister. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2020/06/edo-2020-pdp-aspirants-stalwarts-resist-obaseki/

Politics › Reported Case Of COVID-19 In Kogi Real, Says Melaye ... As Victim's Family Speak by Sakamaje(op): 1:12pm On May 30, 2020 |
https://thenationonlineng.net/reported-case-of-covid-19-in-kogi-real-says-melaye/May 30, 2020
James Azania, Lokoja
Senator Dino Melaye has said that reports of COVID-19 positive case in Kogi State is real and authentic.
This is coming on the heels of brickbats between the Kogi State government and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, over the latter’s announcement of two cases of the Coronavirus positives from the state.
The government through the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Kingsley Fanwo, has however disagreed with the centre’s report, insisting that Kogi remains Covid-19 free.
The family of the Chief Imam of Kabba, Sheikh Ahmad Abubakar Ejibunu, said to have tested positive to the Coronavirus disease have also come out to confirm the development.
Chief Tai Ejibunu, Obatebise of Oweland, in a release said that the Chief Imam, who exhibited the flu symptom, eventually tested positive for the Coronavirus disease, haven been referred from the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Lokoja, to under the test.
Melaye in a statement issued on Saturday, affirmed that one of the cases is from kabba and the victim personally known to me.
The statement read: “I want to announce that the Covid-19 case in Kogi is real and authentic, and cannot understand why any responsible government will want to deny and invariably kill her citizens.
“One of the cases is from kabba and the victim is personally known to me. I cannot be part of those who will play politics with the lives of my people.
“COVID-19 is real, but not a death sentence, if handled early enough. Family members of the Kabba victim who got referral to Abuja from Federal Medical Center in Lokoja, and all those who had contact with him should please surrender themselves for test so as to curtail the spreed.
“Kogi State government must come down from her imaginary high horse and start contact tracing to help curtail the spread. It is illogical to think we will be free with our proximity to affected states. God will hear our cry and heal our land. God bless Okunland! God bless Kogi West! God blesss Kogi State.”
The Ejibunu family spokesman in the statement sought to lay to rest the controversy surrounding the Covid-19 status of one of their patriarchs.
In the statement titled, “The COVID-19 Case Infection: Matters Arising, the family stated thus: “Our attention has been drawn to the series of discussions going on concerning Covid-19 index case in Kabba and the identity of the index case.
“I wish to affirm, on behalf of Ejibunu family, that the Chief Imam of Kabba, Sheikh Ahmad Abubakar Ejibunu, was down with flu some few days back and he had to be hospitalised at the Specialist Hospital in Kabba. Further medical attention was sought at the Federal Medical Centre in Lokoja, as the flu did not abate after some days.
“At the FMC, he was referred to the National Hospital in Abuja and the test conducted on him by the NCDC showed that he was Covid-19 positive.
“The test conducted on one of his sons who had been with him since came out negative. The family would have come out to speak on the matter, but we were not comfortable with the ding dong game going on between the NCDC and the Kogi State government.
“The family is concerned about the wellbeing of other Owes and we wish to confirm that Covid-19 has found its way sadly into our community and the state. Therefore, no need for Kogi State government to deny the obvious.
“We would like to stress that the Chief Imam, of recent, had never ventured outside Kogi State by way of travelling outside the state. So, the ‘virus’ could have been contacted within. We wish to advise our people to please abide by the protocols emplaced by the NCDC and play safe.
“The family is cooperating with the Kogi State government and the NCDC to stem the spread. This evening, contact tracing and testing of family members of the Chief Imam had began. What we need from our people is empathy and no need for the acrimonious exchange of views and counter views.

Career › COVID-19: 8,000 Redivivus Workers Sacked In Anambra by Sakamaje(op): 10:43pm On May 29, 2020 |
About 8,000 staff members of a waste management company in Anambra State have lost their jobs due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This is coming as states have locked down their boundaries to stop the spread of the COVID-19.
Managing Director, Redivivus Industries Ltd., Mr Emeka Ajekwu, who disclosed this to newsmen in Awka, yesterday, said the COVID-19 pandemic had adversely affected the operation of the company, as they lack access to their production materials.
It was gathered that the Redivivus Company signed an official Waste Recycling Contract of about $1.1 million with Anambra State in 2019.
The firm established a network of waste scavengers to supply wastes to the moribund UNDP structure in Ogbunike to help in sustainable environmental management.
Redivivus injected life into the location by employing no fewer than 44 permanent staff members and an additional 16 contract personnel to run the plant with a recycling capacity of 320,000 kg of plastics wastes.
Mr Ajekwu said the company recorded tremendous successes with its partnership with the state government, as they had no fewer than 8,700 members of staff.
Their scope of operations, include Nnewi, Ekwulobia, Ihiala, Nise, Awka, Amansea and Nkwelle Ezunaka.
He explained that the company shut down in February to avoid exposing their frontline workers to dangers.
According to him, waste management practitioners always pick refuse from dumpsites.
“They also pick from some bins that you don’t know, who might have dropped them or what might have been used for.
“We also shut down because most of our products come from across the state and what we produce is evacuated to other states.
“But we are facing difficulties because of the border closure. We don’t have access to raw materials. In fact, we don’t have access to waste products again. So, it’s really affecting our business,’’ Mr Ajekwu noted.
He pleaded with the government to intervene over the displaced staff members as some of them live below N500 per day.
“We are asking the government to extend palliative measures to our staff. We urge them all to go into agriculture and key into the agric policies of Anambra State government.
“We also plead with the government to ensure transparency in the disbursement of support funds mapped out by Micro Finance Banks. We hope to commence moves to access them once the COVID-19 pandemic is over,’’ Ajekwu added. Source: https://tribuneonlineng.com/covid-19-8000-workers-sacked-in-anambra/

The Op obviously lacks understanding about the subject matter before opening this thread. But truth is that he encapsulates the dilemma of the modernday Biafra agitators. The fact remains that the Biafra that Ojukwu envisioned could only have come to fruition with the active participation and consent of the territory that has come to be known today as the 'South-South'.
The Biafra project/state of the civil war era failed the moment the SS states rejected it, as this gave the federal forces the opportunity and gateway to encircle the igbos, marking the death knell of the rebellion. Ojukwu understood that much about the importance of the SS in his Biafra ambitions, ditto Nnamdi Kanu. That explains why Kanu consistently includes Rivers, Akwa-Ibom, and Cross Rivers states in his proposed Biafra country.
The only other way igbos can possibly get Biafra, without the SS tagging along, would be via negotiations with the Nigerian state, on peaceful terms, something akin to the Lesotho arrangement. Anything else would be wishful thinking. |

Shina Peller, a member of the House of Representatives representing Iseyin/Itesiwaju/Kajola/Iwajowa federal constituency, Oyo State, has distributed second batch of relief packages to his constituents.
The relief packages, which are being distributed to the people across the four local governments that make up the constituency, are foodstuffs such as rice, beans and milk bought in multiple folds by Shina Peller for the purpose of reaching out to his people at this trying period which also falls in the month Ramadan 2020.
Recall that earlier Peller had distributed sanitizers and other preventive materials to the people across the length and breadth of the four local governments in the constituency namely Iseyin, Itesiwaju, Kajola and Iwajowa to protect his people against the deadly Coronavirus disease which the whole world has been seriously battling with.
In addition, Peller had earlier made a transfer of N10, 000 cash each to some of the constituents in form of palliative gesture to reduce the ongoing economic hardship caused by the ‘stay at home’ measure of the governments to check the spread of COVID-19. More than 100 people were beneficiaries.
Similarly, he also considered the need for a proper sensitization of the people on the COVID-19 very important, and this was why he went as far as producing informative radio jingles which were aired constantly on Oke-Ogun FM.
Furthermore, Peller had spent a lot printing and distributing banners, posters, handbills and other sensitization materials detailing necessary information needed on how to stay safe against the deadly Coronavirus.
These are some of the measures he has hitherto adopted, while he stated that many other aids will still spring up at no distant time as the world intensifies the battle against the deadly Coronavirus disease to a reasonable end. Lalasticlala Mynd44
